Review
Wolchik (George Washington Univ.) and Curry (Santa Clara Univ.) have edited a useful textbook designed for undergraduate classes that includes chapters dedicated to various themes and countries in Central and East Europe. The first section surveys the political transition, the efforts to re-create the free market economy, the problems raised by ethnic diversity and nationalist sentiment, women's participation in post-communist politics, and the accession to NATO and the EU. The second section includes in-depth case studies of Poland, the Czech and Slovak Republics, Hungary, the Baltic states, Bulgaria, Romania, Albania, Ukraine, and the former Yugoslav republics. . . . Recommended. General readers, undergraduate students, graduate students, and research faculty. (CHOICE)

Useful Process Trace for Advanced and Novice Students Alike
By Michael
This study of transitional states in Eastern Europe examines why some post-Communist sates have become democratic. It presents a thick process trace of the institutional, as well as cultural transitions, in each state and aims to explain why some key actors have maintained a preference for democracy. It further explores what made each state's policy-making capacities sufficient to maintain democracy.

The work has implications that support the neoinstitutionalist literature well, but is written in an accessible manner and provides clear, applied examples with case studies that are thematically organized by region.

Personally, I found this book very useful when asked point blank: is democracy contagious? Though the question was terribly abstract, I was able to clearly isolate cultural variables and popular expectations the volume presents, as well as a number of factors about how each state's institutions are structured. I would highly recommend this text for anyone studying transitional states or those who simply want a good read about what has made some Eastern European countries more democratic than others.

These are the clearest explanations of what happened in Central and Eastern Europe since 1989 that I have read. The articles never seem outdated. Highly recommend.
