Excellent history of a huge and historically significant migration.

This is an enlightening and succinct account The maps are good. The topic is one not thought of much on this side of the Pacific, but it has been significant in demography, culture and economics for many centuries. Chinese have had particular impact in the Philippines, Viet Nam, Indonesia, and elsewhere in Southeast Asia.
Lary describes it well--her writing is quite good and this short book will make an attentive reader as knowledgeable as most Americans about it. The migrations were for economic opportunity, to flee war, exile and trade. More recently sizable numbers of Chinese were contract laborers in some British empire areas, and as widespread as Malaya and Cuba. The current migration to the city in China proper may actually be the largest migration in human history.
The book is surprisingly detailed for its short length. It is worth a reread.
