Unlike many behavioral scientists, Dentan argues that the Semai approach to conflict is a successful Darwinian adaptation. A recurring theme is the importance of psychological "surrender" to maintaining this adaptation. Dentan notes that '[e]thnographies are mountains and endure, theories are mayflies and don't.' . . . Anyone, irrespective of discipline or area of specialization, who traverses this mountain will gain intellectually. Its methodology is refreshingly experimental and its theoretical orientation eclectic. The arguments presented are persuasive and compelling. Learn from them before they're gone.

This is certainly an excellent work and very important on many levels, cultural, political and philosophical. Dentan is an intellectual giant who has spent a lifetime investigating this unique tribe (Semai) in its refugium on the Malaysian peninsula. This is only one of many "first nations" that are in the process of being wiped out by our global civilization in its greed and power. Sorry, I am still reading it, so I can't be more specific.
