Review
A broad-gauge, up-to-date survey of the shifting global landscape, this volume, while invaluable as a textbook, is more than just a teaching tool for the classroom, although it is certainly that. It is also a boon to a much broader readership—indeed, for any citizen who wants to understand how different the new century is from the old one, especially with the rise of Asia. The editors have brought together, in admirably cohesive fashion, some of the foremost scholars on the region and on international affairs, bridging the usual divide between economic and politics. (Talbott, Strobe)
Shambaugh and Yahuda have drawn together a stellar cast of some of the brightest and most thoughtful analysts and practitioners from Asia, Europe, and North America. The result is a compendium which is intellectually stimulating, organizationally well-structured, and analytically sensible, helping us grasp the remarkable dynamism of international relations across Asia today. Students of contemporary Asian affairs—new to the field and old hands alike—will find this a valuable read. (Gill, Bates)
Want to know where the Asia region is headed? This comprehensive and well-written volume provides a clear picture of its political, economic, and social dynamics by the top scholars in the field. It is bound to become the most widely used textbook for Asian international relations courses. (Susan Shirk)
While International Relations of Asia is the product of a prestigious group of specialists, it is neither overly academic nor excessively caught up in specific policy issues. Rather, it is informative, nuanced, and insightful. As such it is sure to become, alongside Robert Sutter’s recently published Chinese Foreign Relations, a foundational textbook in undergraduate international relations courses which have an Asian component to them. More broadly, it is ideally suited as a primer for anyone with a budding interest in the complex security and foreign policy dynamic taking shape in the region. (Journal Of Chinese Political Science)
International Relations of Asia is the product of a prestigious group of specialists….it is informative, nuanced and insightful. It is sure to become…a foundational textbook in undergraduate international relations courses which have an Asian component to them. (Journal Of Chinese Political Science)
These essays by leading scholars combine interpretive richness and factual depth. Taken together, they provide a one-stop education on the dynamics of the globe's most dynamic region. (Richard Bush)

Good book for Politics
By Sara B
I read this in my Asia Politics class with Ellen Frost's Asia's New Regionalism.
Intl Rels of Asia is a very well written analytical text, that shows different perspectives of Asia (Realist, Liberal, Constructivist)
It takes reoccurring themes in the Intl Realm and analyzes their effect in Asia: Asia and the US, Asia and Europe, Theoretical perspectives, the specific role of India/Japan/China, nuclear weapons, ASEAN, Korean Peninsula etc. What I specifically liked about the book is that it hits on points without creating new chapters, while enhancing the readers perspective on a topic without 50 pages worth of reading. For example, the crackdown in Burma/Myanmar is a prominent issue in Asia- deciding how to handle the crackdown, who is at fault, whether Asia should step in, and the opportunity to forcefully implement a democracy. There is no specific chapter detailing what occurred, but the authors find ways to take such influential "topics of Asia" and weave them into the many articles.
This is one of the better books that I've read in a political science class, giving students a broad perspective of how to interpret reoccurring intl arguments. What is Asia's role with Nuclear weapons? How will China's rise change Asia? Etc. We read one or two chapters a class, typically paralleling arguments to Frost.
