Being Critical When Others Want to Be Optimistic

The title may be a bit deceptive. While the author focuses on Black-white interracial relationships in film, she does cover Latinos, Asians, and sometimes Native Americans, as well. I applaud the author as few writers do that. Many people use the term “people of color” and then go on to discuss just one of those groups in the range. This book could have value to Latino Studies and Asian-American Studies majors.
The art on the cover may be surprising as well. It shows a topless embrace between a white man and a Black woman. However, in the text, the author says viewers and scriptwriters fear Black male-white female couples more than they do their opposite. The author also said there are far more filmic depictions of white male-Black female couples than there actually are in the American populace.
But here’s the point of the book. Many articles and news reports state that film and TV are showing far more depictions of interracial couples and thus this means the society’s racism must be decreasing. The author analyzes recent works and says it’s not true if you look closely enough. She attempts to prove that white male characters in interracial relationships are often portrayed as heroic, angelic figures. White female characters coupling with men of color are portrayed as crazy or just not thinking properly. These works tend to show characters of color as opposing interracial coupling and thus imply that white people could never have that prejudice. She also said that when works fail to discuss the interracial coupling, it does not mean that the society is “past race.” The rarity, marginalization, and tragic plotlines of these couples suggests that the increasing dynamic is not without controversy and is not completely celebrated by Hollywood and its imagined audience.
I really enjoyed this book as it’s a magnificent critical text without being written in a user-unfriendly, Butlerian style. This could get a professor some tenure without the book being too challenging for many readers. Still, readers who want to believe that we are in this “utopian,” “post-racial” environment and want books to corroborate that will be resentful or frustrated here. I wonder how this professor was able to watch soooo much film and TV programs and still be able to teach classes, write, manage a household, etc. The book does sometimes mention LGBT people and thus doesn’t assume all couples are heterosexual, by the way.

The Stories We Tell Ourselves

Stories dealing with race always have meaning. Justifying oppression through fiction has always been way whites have shielded themselves and everyone else from the truth. From stories of white women being savaged by men of color to white men heroically saving people of color, white have always felt the need to reinforce the idea that people of the color are the problem and need to be controlled by them or saved by them. Whites control everything we see (television, movies, media) and this book points out all the myths, ideologies and archetypes that whites like to reinforce about interracial relationships in our society. In an unjust system that benefits one race rather than another, whenever there is an interaction across races, people always take sides and since all media industries are controlled by the benefiting group (whites), we can always expect that this group is going to present themselves in a protective and positive way.

Why do so many actresses of color (Jennifer Lopez, Salma Hayek, Halle Berry, Zoe Saldana, Rosario Dawson, Thandie Newton, etc.) constantly act in films opposite white males?
Why do famous black male actors (Will Smith, Denzel Washington) seldom act opposite black females?
Why does the media always take the side of white victims of crimes and try to discredit black victims of crimes?
Why are Asian men always de-sexualized in films?
Why is it that when white females are involved with black men in films, he has to be the exceptional Negro separate from all others or she has to be damaged goods in a seedy environment?
Why are white men always presented as savior figures for women of color?
This book points out racist stereotypes attributed to people of color and perpetuated in films, television and media when involved with whites:
Blacks: hyper-sexual or promiscuous, sexually well-endowed, sassy, brutish, arrogant, lazy, and selfish.
Asians: martial artist, non-sexual, weak, effeminate and submissive.
Race is always the story in a system of oppression, so this book has great value to those are ignorant to the stories that whites want to keep telling themselves about involvement with people of color.
