Happiness and the Christian Moral Life: An Introduction to Christian Ethics, by Paul J. Wadell

Happiness and the Christian Moral Life suggests that the heart of Christian ethics are not elements such as laws and rules and principles and obligations, but is an ongoing initiation into a way of life capable of making a person good and therefore, happy. These elements are important, but they should never overshadow what ought to be the principal concern of Christian ethics: how to form us into people who love the good and seek it in everything we do. Paul Wadell re-envisions the basic elements of Christian morality in light of the conviction that the Christian moral life can be most promisingly described as 'training in happiness.' This book explores the place of friendship in the Christian moral life, the role of the virtues in our quest for happiness, a Christian understanding of the person, the meaning of freedom in the Christian life, and the importance of narrative for Christian ethics, including what it might mean to 'put on' the story that comes to us in Jesus. Also examined are the role of conscience and prudence, its primary virtue; a Christian understanding of love; and why in the Christian life, happiness is impossible without justice.

Review
Happiness and the Christian Moral Life is a fantastic text. Yet to call this book an 'introduction' seems to diminish its depth. Wadell skillfully moves back and forth from ancient and medieval texts to contemporary insight on the nature of persons and society. In this book he addresses clearly the fundamentals of moral theology in a thoroughly 'un-textbook' fashion. Like a good storyteller, he shares these fundamentals with us - including friendship, freedom, sin, conscience, virtue, and love, in a coherent and compelling manner. (Brady, Bernard)

Paul Wadell's Happiness and the Christian Moral Life is an extraordinarily inviting treatment of the deep and expansive material of the discipline of Christian ethics. In Wadell's book the well-worn concepts and terms of Catholic moral theology are given new life, as he guides us with a friendly and gracious openness through discussions of happiness, friendship, virtue, truth, freedom, sin, conscience and justice. This is a comprehensive textbook that reads like a novel. In Wadell's competent hands, moral theology not only makes sense, it is engaging and exciting. I cannot think of a better place to begin thinking about the central questions of Christian ethics. (Charles Pinches)

It is rare to find a book one cannot wait to teach. Paul Wadell's Happiness and the Christian Moral Life is just such a book. Here the complex components of Catholic moral theology come alive through crystal clear, honest, and good-humored prose that will engage any reader, especially students. But even more delightfully, the book incarnates its claims. Wadell sees the moral life as 'training in happiness' and describes moral education as a process of 'becoming enchanted with goodness.' This book will enchant its readers, as it did me, with the beauty of the Christian journey. It is a book that imparts the joy that comes with friendship with God and those God loves. Suffused with the author's own contemplative spirituality, this book is a gift to the church, one with potential to actually change students' lives. (M. Therese Lysaught)

It is Wadell's superb study. (Books & Culture)

This is the best one volume work in fundamental moral theology now available for the widest possible audience. It represents the shift in the revision of moral theology from its focus on right actions to becoming good persons. In this theologically rich work, Wadell shows the difference the qualifier 'Christian' makes for understanding who we are, who we are to become, and how we get there. He draws from the storehouse of Christian ethics to develop his core theme of seeking happiness through virtue. Those who know Wadell’s work already appreciate the artistry of his lucid prose, rich images, and laser-like precision. This book does what all important books do—expand the conversation by giving a new slant on familiar themes. I plan to use it and recommend it as a must read for anyone who seeks to live their faith reflectively or who wants to know where fundamental moral theology is today. (Richard M. Gula, S.S.)

great basic introduction to virtue ethics
By Julie Balamut
Dr. Wadell's book is a terrific introduction to the positive, life affirming topic of Christian virtue ethics. Read this book if you really want to know how even despite sin and human weakness, God's love for us all transends the sorrows of the world. His explanations are beautifully crafted and his voice is one that brings hope to those who struggle with living the good life well. Wonderful text for beginning students of a positive, affirming view of Christian ethics. A breath of fresh air in the dankness of the usual sin, damnation, and "thou-shall-nots" of many Christian ethics texts. Bravo, Dr. Wadell, your book is full of joy!

Excellent, practical, dissertation advice.
By Getting Older
It was obvious to me that some people who wrote reviews only read the title and sample pages, or just didn't comprehend the message of the book.

The author does NOT say a dissertation is the same as a thesis. What the author DOES say, is that a dissertation or thesis CAN be completed in two semesters of less. The author does NOT say your dissertation should only be 100 pages. What the author DOES say, is that 100 pages is an INITIAL GOAL, and that your thesis or dissertation will probably have more pages than that.

Many dissertation guides out there (and I feel like I have read them all) talk about things like topic selection, emotions of being a grad student, statistics, and choosing/working with committee members. This book also touches on all those topics. What this book does better than all the others, is to help you lay out an actual plan to writing the dissertation. (i.e. how long will you need for the lit review, how long will you need for data collection, etc.) The book helps you map it all out whether you are in the sciences, humanities, or somewhere in between.

If you are already pretty far along with your dissertation, you probably won't get much from this book. If you are in the first half, or you are coming back to the dissertation after time away from it, this book will help you get into gear. If I had to recommend one dissertation guide, this one would be it.

will be of little help for those in the humanities
By S. Lee
Although there are examples drawn from the humanities and social sciences, the book is primarily intended for those in the sciences and engineering and will be of little help for ones in the humanities. Much of what it contains actually sounds very different from how things are really done in the humanities. Certainly, some of what it says is right on the money to humanists too, but even so, it is really more about the tried and true way of doing doctoral research in any field than about giving some 'innovative' ways of finishing the dissertation real quick. But then there wouldn't be such a thing as a quick fix for a stuck doctoral disseratation. To sum up, since there's nothing new and little helpful in this book for humanists, if you're one of them, look elsewhere. Joan Bolker's Writing Your Dissertation in Fifteen Minutes a Day does look much better than this one.

For those embarking on the dissertation journey, helpful but not without its drawbacks
By Matt McCloud
Dissertation timelines are typically very long, often taking years to complete. This dissertation guide presents constructive advice on how to move through all phases of a dissertation project as quickly and headache-free as possible. While the time frame suggested by the title -two semesters or less--is unrealistic, following Ogden's advice will certainly lead to an earlier completion date.

Although every chapter in the book is helpful, I found chapters covering committee choice and topic selection of particular interest. Ogden presents a variety of different professor-profiles as potential advisor (mentor) candidates. She succinctly elaborates on the factors that a PhD candidate should consider when choosing an advisor, including his or her availability, career position, commitments, interests, capability, and personality type. As I read this chapter, I began to reevaluate my own assumptions about what a good advisor is in terms of the bottom line--completing the dissertation.

The chapter on choosing a dissertation topic was full of useful information, although the author certainly guts any idealism or excitement when she says, "Make your objective a topic that is `tolerably non-boring,' a topic that has a high potential for success (finishing)" (p. 38). True to the title of the book, the chapter (as is with every chapter) is all about being practical. Topic choice is dictated by such considerations as access to the data, feasibility of data collection, and short-cut means-to-an-end topic mining (rather than interest).

The emphasis on efficiency and practicality, coupled with the brevity of the text, leads to some problems, however. In the chapter on research design, Ogden champions the experimental method over every other type, attempting to keep things as simple as possible. Not only does she leave out other types of quantitative approaches, such as observational studies, but she seems completely ignore any qualitative method. Speaking of case study research, she erroneously claims that "it is difficult to draw conclusions from the data and justify them with what amounts to a small sample" (p. 42). While it may be hard, if not impossible to make statistical generalizations with small case study samples, analytic generalizations and generalizations using case-comparison strategies are often made (see Yin's Case Study Research: Design and Method). Rather than arguing for a particular method, perhaps the author could have argued for using a structured method and provided more design options. Further, because design and topic choice are interdependent, the student may find an experimental design does not fit the topic of choice.

A final caveat I have with the book is, despite its realistic approach, ironically, her claim that a dissertation can be completed in two semesters or less is more fiction than reality. No wonder the author glosses over the revision process, typically a painstaking one that requires time. In Chapter 6, covering the writing phase, she states that after only three weeks of writing, "Figure another week for revision and voila--the end is in sight" (p. 85). She makes the revision process sound as quick and pain-free as painting the living room. Devoting a few pages to the revision process and how to speed up that particular end of things would have been helpful to the reader and in keeping with the practical nature of the book although might have conflicted with the book's slant. Despite such issues, the book provides a wealth of practical information when read with caution.

The American South: A History (Volume 2), by William J. Cooper Jr., Thomas E. Terrill

In The American South, Fourth Edition, William J. Cooper, Jr. and Thomas E. Terrill demonstrate their belief that it is impossible to divorce the history of the south from the history of the United States. The authors' analysis underscores the complex interaction between the South as a distinct region and the South as an inescapable part of America. Cooper and Terrill show how the resulting tension has often propelled section and nation toward collision. In supporting their thesis, the authors draw on the tremendous amount of profoundly new scholarship in Southern history. Each volume includes a substantial biographical essay—completely updated for this edition—which provides the reader with a guide to literature on the history of the South. Coverage now includes the devastation of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, up-to-date analysis of the persistent racial divisions in the region, and the South's unanticipated role in the 2008 presidential primaries.

Review
As the first full textbook on the region's history, Cooper and Terrill's The American South has long been a staple in undergraduate classrooms, and for good reason. This comprehensive, but concise, history by distinguished scholars of the Old and New South, respectively, serves both students and instructors as an effective introduction and a ready reference. In chronicling the South's distinctive history, the authors are constantly attuned to the fact that its history has always integral to that of the nation as a whole; their ability to so adeptly balance the particular with the general makes this an engaging and eminently teachable narrative. (John C. Inscoe, University of Georgia)

Combining original analysis with an impressive grasp of relevant scholarship, The American South: A History is distinguished by its wealth of fascinating information and its strong narrative style. It is the kind of book that students want to keep when the course is finished. (Clarence L. Mohr, University of South Alabama)

About the Author
William J. Cooper, Jr. is the Boyd Professor of History at Louisiana State University. Thomas E. Terrill is emeritus professor of history at the University of South Carolina.

Positives: It is dense with rea information good if you want real concrete numbers.

Why Presidents Fail: White House Decision Making from Eisenhower to Bush II, by Richard M. Pious

Presidents are surrounded by political strategists and White House counsel who presumably know enough to avoid making the same mistakes as their predecessors. Why, then, do the same kinds of presidential failures occur over and over again? Why Presidents Fail answers this question by examining presidential fiascos, quagmires, and risky business-the kind of failure that led President Kennedy to groan after the Bay of Pigs invasion, "How could I have been so stupid?"

In this book, Richard M. Pious looks at nine cases that have become defining events in presidencies from Dwight D. Eisenhower and the U-2 Flights to George W. Bush and Iraqi WMDs. He uses these cases to draw generalizations about presidential power, authority, rationality, and legitimacy. And he raises questions about the limits of presidential decision-making, many of which fly in the face of the conventional wisdom about the modern presidency.

Review
As Richard Pious traces the anatomy of presidential failures, he argues that, under conditions of high pressure and great uncertainty, presidents too often engage in “situational constitutionalism” and fail to distinguish between their personal stakes and the nation's best interests. His carefully reconstructed and detailed case studies do not present merely the conventional wisdom about some obvious presidential blunders, but include incisive analyses of the underlying dynamics of presidential failures that contain important lessons for future presidents and citizens alike. (James Pfiffner, School of Public Policy, George Mason University)

This well-written work, which includes extensive footnotes and resources for further study, is recommended for academic libraries. (Library Journal)

Government executives, for their part, should be required to study this book closely and incorporate the lessons of executive failure. Highly recommended. (S. Q. Kelly CHOICE)

His particular lens of anaylsis deepens our understanding of how presidents come to make failed policy choices. (Public Administration Review)

Why Presidents Fail will engage students and educate us all. Filled with wisdom and innovative thinking, it is a volume everyone interested in the presidency will want to read. (George C. Edwards III, Editor, PRESIDENTIAL STUDIES QUARTERLY)

Pious has researched each case in great detail, yielding much information that may be new to readers, and provides a thorough bibliography. Appropriate for high school and college study, this will also have great appeal for devotees of poli-sci and presidential history. (Publishers Weekly)

Foundation for understanding presidential failures
By Rick Mayo
Pious offers some unique theories as to why Presidents fail. His take on specifically Johnson and Nixon are very spot on. But seems to spend too much time defending Carter and his "moral approach" to his failed presidency. For those looking to discover more about the "imperialistic presidency" we are ascending to this offers a good foundation. Slightly tilted to the progressive side in his presentation.

Not well edited -- contains many typos and is very long winded
By Emma
A fine book. Not overly interesting. Very long winded. It seems to be well-researched, but it contains several confusing typos per chapter which change the meanings of the sentences.

For example, on page 188, a sentence says: "They argued that since Hillary Clinton was not a PUBLIC employee, the law applied to the Task Force and its working groups." The word PUBLIC here is wrong. It should be replaced with the word "government", as this would make much more sense in the context (since this passage is talking about workers who were not government employees").

If you want to read about the different cases mentioned in the book but don't feel like combing through the cumbersome material for the raw details, just Google "Bay of Pigs" or "Malaise Speech".

If anything, this book needs a second edition.

You don't have to be religious for the story of Adam and Eve to have touched your life. From Voldemort's snake mascot in Harry Potter novels to the "forbidden fruit" apple that puts Snow White to sleep in fairy tales, we are inundated with references to the Garden of Eden in popular culture from an early age. On a deeper level, the story has been used as justification for conflicting viewpoints on issues ranging from nudity to marriage to slavery. Approaching Eden digs much deeper than merely cataloguing entertaining Adam and Eve references in popular culture by exploring how these references are used and how they shape society. Theresa Sanders provides essential historical background from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim perspectives to show the relevance and prominence of Adam and Eve's story in life today.

Review
Sanders takes readers through a myriad of sources, ranging from medieval Jewish legends about Lilith to episodes of The Simpsons and movies such as Pleasantville (1998). . . . Recommended. (CHOICE, April 2010)

Her study reveals the assumptions we have made about what the story both says and doesn't say. She accomplishes this in articulate fashion that engages, informs, and entertains without being pedantic. Through the lens of modern cultural phenomena she lets us glimpse how the chronicle from the first chapters of Genesis touches our lives in ways we may not even be aware of.... Theresa Sanders...has blessed us with a commentary that is scholarly, contemporary, perceptive and often very funny. Approaching Eden traces the 'first sin' through centuries of theological speculation and 80 years of fiction, film and television. (National Catholic Reporter)

Sanders's work is often fascinating and always suggestive in how it illuminates the connections between Gen 2—3 and popular cultural products. (Relegere: Studies in Religion and Reception)

Adam and Eve have become icons, pop stars. Their mythical presence emerges in The Simpsons, New Yorker cartoons, and Beech-Nut baby food advertisements. Approaching Eden is a delightfully serious romp through pop culture's religious unconscious. (S. Brent Plate, Hamilton College, author, Blasphemy: Art that Offends; managing editor, Material Religion)

Theresa Sanders' Approaching Eden gives us another adventure in Paradise with her fruitful analysis of the Adam and Eve biblical story within popular film and television. Ranging through drama to science fiction, horror to the Jesus genre and beyond, it is a veritable tree of knowledge. Her interfaith exploration of Genesis is an especially devilish delight. (Anton Karl Kozlovic, Flinders University, Guest Editor, Australian Religion Studies Review)

Approaching Eden is without a doubt the most engaging and instructive book that I have read on reflections in popular culture of our foundational mythic text. (John R. May, Louisiana State University, author of Nourishing Faith through Fiction)

Approaching Eden is a gift to anyone attempting to bring faith and life closer in a world filled with mediated stories: in this case, tales and images influenced by the Biblical creation narrative of Genesis 1-3. Sanders is fearless in her critical analysis but never cavalier. Her prose is energetic and accessible; her surveys broad and her insights bold. Sanders makes theology a pleasure while enticing the reader to deeper theological scrutiny of accepted widely-held interpretations of Genesis through representations of Adam and Eve from movies to museums. Approaching Eden is an intellectual and spiritual delight. (Sr. Rose Pacatte, FSP, founding director, Pauline Center for Media Studies; St. Anthony Messenger film and television columnist)

A great small group book!

We are using this for a small (10 people) book sharing group. This is great for digging into the actual bible story of Adam and Eve and understanding the biblical exegesis of it and all the traditional and popular interpretations of the story. There is a lot to chew on whether you are a seasoned bible reader or just an "On Sunday" reader.

Virginia in the Vanguard: Political Leadership in the 400-Year-Old Cradle of American Democracy, 1981-2006, by Frank B. Atkinson

Virginia in the Vanguard continues the story, begun in the Dynamic Dominion, of Virginia's reemergence as a competitive, trend-setting state. In the 1980s, with Reagan's revolution underway in Washington, Democrats led by Chuck Robb and Doug Wilder, the nation's only African American elected governor, reclaimed the governor's mansion and focused attention on a centrist formula as a prescription for Democratic renewal nationally.

In the 1990s, hard-charging Republican George Allen reversed the party's fortunes and propelled the GOP toward control of the state's legislature and both U.S. Senate seats. Virginia in the Vanguard describes these and other dramatic events that have placed the 400 year-old cradle of democracy back in the forefront of American politics and produced two dynamic leaders―Republican Senator George Allen and former Democrat Governor Mark Warner―widely touted as presidential timber.

Review
Frank Atkinson is a rare combination of scholar and practitioner―recognized by all of us who have covered Virginia politics as one of the keenest minds in either party or on either side of the reporter's notebook. Virginia in the Vanguard arrives with superb timing, just as two of Virginia's most interesting and capable politicians are springing on national notice. Atkinson's work will alert readers outside Virginia to something I learned long ago―the Old Dominion has one of the most distinctive, entertaining, and occasionally outrageous, political cultures of any state in the union. (John F. Harris, Washington Post National Politics Editor and author of The Survivor: Bill Clinton in the White House)

Virginia in the Vanguard deserves a place on the bookshelf of anyone interested in the recent political history of the Commonwealth. (James R. Sweeney, Old Dominion University Virginia Magazine)

Virginia has changed from a political backwater to a powerhouse in the past quarter century―the significance of which was missed by almost everyone except Frank Atkinson. He explains―brilliantly, I'd say―how it happened and why it's so important, especially now that Virginia is not as red a state as it once was. You won't understand Virginia's pivotal role in the 2008 presidential race without Atkinson's help and, besides, Virginia in the Vanguard is a great read. (Fred Barnes, Executive Editor of The Weekly Standard and Fox News Commentator)

Must read for Virginians and those who aspire to be
By Kevin Gentry
Frank Atkinson's "Virginia in the Vanguard" offers a fascinating commentary on a Southern state in rapid social and political transition, just as with his first book, "The Dynamic Dominion." This book also treats you to great historical story-telling. But best of all, it introduces you to some startlingly intriguing characters.

Atkinson is a brilliant, if not artful, writer. Yet, the special appeal of this book it that it is chockful of Atkinson's first-hand, personal accounts and glimpses of an unusual cast of characters who would seem almost Shakespearian in the complexity of their ambitions, achievements -- and tragic limitations and failures.

In 1981, at a high school conference I attended in Richmond, Professors Larry Sabato and Tom Morris, commenting about the then gubernatorial race between the two young and ambitious pols Chuck Robb and Marshall Coleman, remarked that, "Virginia, the mother of presidents, hasn't been pregnant in a long time."

That since 1981 Virginia would see an astonishingly diverse range of actors take the public stage is remarkable in itself. That so many of these actors would become nationally prominent, even frontrunners for the Presidency, is all the more astonishing. But what is perhaps most intriguing is that seemingly all of these players have ultimately stumbled as if tainted by some Shakespearian curse.

Atkinson's book pretty well captures it all. And in a peculiar way, it whets your appetite for a third book which must surely come.

Christians in the Movies: A Century of Saints and Sinners (Sheed & Ward Books), by Peter E. Dans

Christians in the Movies traces the arc of the portrayal in film of Christians from 1905 to the present. For most of the first six decades, the portrayals were favorable and even reverential. By contrast, from 1970 on, Christians have often been treated with hostility and often outright ridicule. This book explores this shift through in-depth reviews and commentaries on 100 important films, as well as briefer discussions of about 75 additional Christian-themed films.

Peter E. Dans examines various causative factors for this change such as the abolition of the Hays Motion Picture Production Code, the demise of the Catholic Legion of Decency, and the associated profound societal and cultural changes. From a look at the real story behind the Scopes trial to portraits of actors, directors and writers most prominently associated with films involving Christians and Christianity, Christians in the Movies provides a great resource for those who wish to select films for showing at churches, universities or for personal viewing and critical examination of the recent cultural movements and thought.

Review
Dr. Dans provides a thoughtful and informed perspective on the fascinating intersection of faith and film, using some surprising insights and examples to explode the discouraging old idea that movies and religion must always convey opposing messages. (Michael Medved, nationally syndicated talk radio host, author of The 10 Big Lies About America)

Dans's critical judgments are generally reliable or provocative. . . . Students researching depictions of Christians and Christian concerns and people selecting Christian-themed films for churches and other institutions will find valuable information here. (Library Journal)

Dans, a Catholic, has published a second book, Christians in the Movies, a similarly impressive inquiry into the cinematic portrayal of Christianity and Christians. Like his first book, Christians in the Movies is both a highly readable and informative work of film commentary and a discussion of changing social attitudes. . . . Dans not only documents changing images of faith, he sketches the larger social context of films from The Passion of Joan of Arc and Angels With Dirty Faces to Dogma and The Magdalene Sisters. . . . Even when Dans' opinions diverge from the reader's, his views are always engaging and thought-provoking, and the reader's views will benefit from interacting with Dans'. For serious Christian movie buffs, Christians in the Movies is a must-have. (National Catholic Register)

Dans is a physician and professor by trade, and a man of good film taste by a lifetime of cultivation. The longtime writer of a movie column for the Pharos journal and author of Doctors in the Movies: Boil the Water and Just Say Aah, Dans is a true cinephile. Approximately 200 titles are covered in this volume, from the silent era right up to 2008's Doubt. Each entry features a plot summary and brief commentary from Dans on how a film fares in its treatment of Christianity. We hear a fair amount of grumbling about Hollywood's "ridicule of organized religion, especially Christianity," but Dans also enjoys highlighting films that handle the faith with sympathy or ingenuity, from mid-century Bible spectaculars to made-for-TV gems that you probably missed....Dans packs his chapters with tons of information, including mini-essays that historicize cinematic and cultural developments, institutions like the Catholic Legion of Decency, and directors like Buñuel. These essays are delivered in Dans' frank style, and his writing is enjoyably informed by a lifetime of learning. (Books and Culture)

Dans adds a welcome, stimulating voice to the discussion about those smudged and sterling religious characters created more in the image of Hollywood than in imago Dei. . . . Recommended. (CHOICE)

Dans, a professor at Johns Hopkins Medical School, wrote a well-received volume about Hollywood's portrayal of doctors from 1931 to 2000. As a serious Catholic and longtime film aficionado, he decided to do the same for Christians. Dans selected over 200 Christian-themed films produced from 1905 to 2005 and organized them by decade, with a brief historical overview for each section. Although he likes most of the films, he also includes films that attack Christians. In this way he is able to trace the steady decline, with some notable exceptions, of the generally positive film portrayals of Christians until, as he puts it, 'all orthodox clergy and believers were either vicious predators or narrow-minded, mean spirited Pharisees.' Dans includes plenty of photos along with the plots and his analyses. . . . A worthy participant in the ongoing battle for the culture, Dans' book should find a prominent place in every family's home theater. (First Things)

Dans is a thoughtful, intelligent observer whose considered views merit respect. As either a historical study of the shifting fortunes of the Church in Hollywood or as a guide to particular films, this solid book offers much of use, and is happily recommended to academic and parish libraries. (Catholic Library World)

He exhibits a deep knowledge of film history and, by and large, insightful engagements of each film…. Given the wealth of material here, there is much to praise about Dans' work…. As a whole, Christians in the Movies is a valuable resource and a much-needed one. This will be a perfect text for classroom and congregational use. Entire courses, lectures, and discussion series are just waiting to be created from the material that he has provided here. (Patheos)

Christians in the Movies traces the arc of the portrayal in film of Christians from 1905 to the present [2008]....To do an exhaustive study would take more time and effort than an associate professor of medicine at Johns Hopkins University would have, so [Dans] narrowed the field down to a manageable number. That, in turn, makes the book more accessible to the reader than one with several hundred....This is a book to be watched with your computer on and your web browser open to your Netflix account, because you will learn about films you'll want to watch. (Christian Cinema)

The author presents generally informative and interesting plot summaries for each film, followed by his commentary on its merits. . . . Dans offers a comprehensive and insightful overview of religious-themed films. (Publishers Weekly)

An extensively researched 406-page work, complete with index and photos, of the treatment Christians have received on the big screen. (The Catholic Review)

In his new book, he offers concise synopses of plots and characters, anaylses, and interesting background details on the movies' makers. (Hopkins Medicine)

Christians in the Movies, recently released in paperback, covers approximately 200 titles from the silent era up to 2008's Doubt. [Dans] discusses how once-revered institutions now are vilified, undervalued and discredited....One reason he wrote the book on doctors in the movies is because "it's a noble profession" that is mistreated by some filmmakers, he said. An unabashed supporter of the Catholic Church, he sees people in the media looking for any excuse to mistreat it as well. "It's a divine institution in human hands, and you can expect to have people who are flawed. But it has survived all these years because it has something central to it that can't be denied." His book looks at supportive as well as at explicitly anti-Catholic films in their cultural context. (St. Louis Review)

Christians in the Movies was a pleasure to read. It should appeal to cinephiles of any faith, and may prove an important analysis of how the treatment of Christians in the movies reflects society's challenge, as once-revered institutions may be vilified, undervalued, and discarded. With our leisure time and disposable funds so limited, and the shift of viewing habits from a night at the movies with friends to DVD family nights at home, the movie industry is facing a crisis of its own. This may be a critical time to pick up Dans's clarion call to participate in restoring the balance. His backstories can show us why; the chapter introductions explain how. (The Pharos)

In his book, Christians in the Movies: A Century of Saints and Sinners, Peter E. Dans reviews, with great insight and aplomb, movies released during various periods (such as The Silent Era) over the last century of the motion picture industry. He also reveals the magnitude of the cultural shift that has occurred during that time period....This book is extremely comprehensive and very readable. There are wonderful insights into the directors, authors and others involved in some of the greatest films of all times. There are also interesting reflections by critics of those films. It is well researched and well organized....MOVIEGUIDE® is very enthusiastic about this book and recommends it to everyone who likes film history or wants to know what to watch. (Movieguide)

Peter Dans is a gifted writer, with crystal clear prose and an eye for essential details. Christians in the Movies is a panoramic, film by film view of Hollywood's treatment of religion over the years, from the reverential to the profane. Although the book is a boon for researchers, writers and students, Dans' witty insights make it an enjoyable read for anyone interested in movies, culture or religion. (Robert Knight, director of the Media Research Center's Culture and Media Institute, author of The Age of Consent: The Rise of Relativism and th)

Peter E. Dans' book, Christians in the Movies, is a fascinating, compelling, insight into movies featuring Jesus Christ and Christian personalities over the last 100 years. (Ted Baehr, chairman, Christian Film & Television Commission; MOVIEGUIDE)

Christians in the Movies is a stimulating contribution to the discussion about religion and cinema. Peter Dans shows a true love and knowledge of film. (Peter Malone, editor of Through a Catholic Lens: Religious Perspectives of 19 Film Directors from Around the World)

Wonderful Resource, for Christians and Movie Buffs
By Farm Mom
I got this book after it got a good review in Publishers Weekly, and have really enjoyed it. First, it's a mini-history of American movies in general, from the days of silent films to the censorship, the Motion Picture Production Code, and the National Legion of Decency, through the decades to the present. I love old movies and had seen a lot of these, but had never really thought about how Hollywood portrayed Christians. There's a pretty detailed description of each movie, then a commentary, and a "backstory" with extra tidbits, and as Dans takes you through the last century of movies, in a balanced way he shows how the portrayals have changed, as our culture has changed. It's important stuff for Christians to know and think about. My only gripe with this book is the price. This book would be a fantastic resource for church groups or Christian schools. I homeschooled my kids for many years, and wish this book had been around then; it would have made a great course. The publisher should put out a paperback version that's a lot cheaper, and then I would hope that many more people could buy this wonderful book.

More Than Just Christians In The Movies
By David Bellel
A must for anyone who is a film buff. This is more than just a book on the portrayal of Christians in the movies but a comprehensive and insightful history of cinema itself. There is always a decided slant that a director or screenwriter is projecting in their works and a viewer should always be informed as what that point of view is as well as the shifting tides in societies' tastes and values that influence those views. Peter Dans tackles a very challenging subject very successfully.

Interesting history, but errors make you wonder!
By B. Liska
Mr.Dans has compiled a lot of information about cinema and how Christians have fared in the movies over the years, but he has made some glaring errors, Jesus legs were not broken at the crucifixion, that make you wonder if the other information he has given us is factual. There certainly are many movies summarized in this volume, and it can certainly serve as a guide for wholesome and worthwhile movies, but please review you info next time.
