Wonderful Resource, for Christians and Movie Buffs

I got this book after it got a good review in Publishers Weekly, and have really enjoyed it. First, it's a mini-history of American movies in general, from the days of silent films to the censorship, the Motion Picture Production Code, and the National Legion of Decency, through the decades to the present. I love old movies and had seen a lot of these, but had never really thought about how Hollywood portrayed Christians. There's a pretty detailed description of each movie, then a commentary, and a "backstory" with extra tidbits, and as Dans takes you through the last century of movies, in a balanced way he shows how the portrayals have changed, as our culture has changed. It's important stuff for Christians to know and think about. My only gripe with this book is the price. This book would be a fantastic resource for church groups or Christian schools. I homeschooled my kids for many years, and wish this book had been around then; it would have made a great course. The publisher should put out a paperback version that's a lot cheaper, and then I would hope that many more people could buy this wonderful book.

More Than Just Christians In The Movies

A must for anyone who is a film buff. This is more than just a book on the portrayal of Christians in the movies but a comprehensive and insightful history of cinema itself. There is always a decided slant that a director or screenwriter is projecting in their works and a viewer should always be informed as what that point of view is as well as the shifting tides in societies' tastes and values that influence those views. Peter Dans tackles a very challenging subject very successfully.

Interesting history, but errors make you wonder!

Mr.Dans has compiled a lot of information about cinema and how Christians have fared in the movies over the years, but he has made some glaring errors, Jesus legs were not broken at the crucifixion, that make you wonder if the other information he has given us is factual. There certainly are many movies summarized in this volume, and it can certainly serve as a guide for wholesome and worthwhile movies, but please review you info next time.
