Barnum—flocked to see the giant on exhibition. In the colossus, many saw evidence that their continent, and the tiny hamlet of Cardiff, had ties to Biblical history. American science also weighed in on the discovery, and in doing so revealed its own growing pains, including the shortcomings of traditional education, the weaknesses of archaeological methodology, as well as the vexing presence of amateurs and charlatans within its ranks. A national debate ensued over the giant's origins, and was played out in the daily press.
Ultimately, the discovery proved to be an elaborate hoax. Still, the story of the Cardiff Giant reveals many things about America in the post-Civil War years. After four years of destruction on an unimagined scale, Americans had increasingly turned their attention to the renewal of progress. But the story of the Cardiff Giant seemed to shed light on a complicated, mysterious past, and for a time scientists, clergymen, newspaper editors, and ordinary Americans struggled to make sense of it. Hucksters, of course, did their best to take advantage of it.

When a ten-foot figure was unearthed in the small town of Cardiff, New York in 1869, it caused a sensation that drew-and fooled-thousands over the ensuing years through the efforts of some dedicated hucksters, foremost the "small time swindler" George Hull. Author Tribble, unfortunately, manages to squeeze any sense of wonder and excitement from the story with a bloated, overwrought account that follows every digression it can. The spectacle meant many things to many people, and consequently gives Tribble plenty of opportunity to stray from the narrative: the foundation and rise of Mormonism, the Age of Enlightenment and Romanticism, and the story of every minor character in the way. Pared down, an interesting story can be found in the efforts Hull and his co-conspirators went through to create, conceal and profit from their elaborate hoax; unfortunately, Tribble's mighty effort to tie the waning century's shifting values together in a single sideshow collapses under its own weight.

The giant was examined and pronounced genuine by some very famous people, including Oliver Wendell Holmes and P. T. Barnum. The Cardiff Giant was, naturally, a hoax, sculpted out of stone and buried where it was certain to be dug up. The hoaxer was George Hull, described in this highly detailed and thoroughly researched book as a small-time swindler. Hull, an avowed atheist, saw an opportunity to take a very public swipe at fundamentalists and, specifically, at the people—like preacher Henry B. Turk—who believed that the Bible’s stories of giants were literally true. So, teaming up with sculptor Edward Burkhardt, Hull perpetrated a fraud that would go down in history. All these and more may be found inside "A Colossal Hoax," the definitive story of the greatest act of flim-flammery ever perpetrated on the American public--the Cardiff Giant!
Open its covers, and be dumbfounded at the sheer silliness of the hoax--a 10 foot-tall statue, buried and discovered and purported to not be a statue at all, but a "petrification" of a prehistoric giant! It sounds so absurd, one wonders how anyone would even think the story credible! And yet the perpetrators of this preposterousness mounted an elaborate scheme to convince people of the same, meanwhile trying their mightiest to reap great fiduciary rewards from would-be purchasers of said giant.
How could such things be possible? Well, folks, the 19th century, as Scott Tribble reminds us, was a very different time from ours. This was the age of P.T. Barnum, folks! The era of snake-oil salesmen and circus freaks and newspapers that blurred the lines between fact and fiction! Hucksterism, pranks, newspaper stories that bore only a tangential relationship to reality--such things were not frowned upon; they were expected!
What sets this hoax's colossal head and shoulders above the rest? Why, it's the sheer effort its perpetrators put forth to fool the public. Their elaborate scheme involved a rotating cast of colourful characters whose devotion to their hoax is by turns fanatical and farcical! P.T. Barnum himself makes an appearance, part of an elaborate plan to out-forge the forgerers who dared to perpetrate such lucrative shenanigans without giving the greatest showman on earth a piece of the action.
Scott Tribble has written perhaps the definitive account of this hoax. Thoroughly and diligently researched, "A Colossal Hoax" covers every angle of this strange story. While at times the author's attention to detail dampens the breathless excitement of these preposterous events, he still delivers a powerful and fascinating story that you'll never forget. useful for entertainment or discussion

I found this book to be interesting, presenting facts as an engaging story, along with occasional analysis to determine motivation of key characters or show events in a broader view of history. Though it's probably aimed at a college audience, about midway through, my page-turning fascination with the story may have equaled my experience reading "A Night To Remember" as a youngster. That was also about a "giant" whose reports of greatness were rather exaggerated (i.e., press coverage didn't hold water, though, unfortunately, the giant did). Unlike that entirely tragic case, one may find humor in some details surrounding the Cardiff Giant plot. Hollywood could easily take liberties with it, presenting George Hull as a loveable rogue, or perhaps it would fly just as well on film by sticking to the facts, as a documentary in the style of Ken Burns.
However, just reading it, the old-fashioned way, is pretty good. The book would make an excellent choice for the required supplemental reading list of most any undergraduate American History course covering this period. Since the main text in such a course will likely be rather dry by comparison, students just attending to meet requirements may be inspired to a greater appreciation of historical studies by the addition of this material. Also, given that learning to conduct research is a primary goal of most college programs, not just those in history departments, this work has much to say which could be useful for various other courses, especially in journalism, science, or even Biblical studies.
Following are some of the many possible classroom discussion questions or research topics that might be delved into while going through the book. Has science proven that ancient giants never existed? Have there been any cases where archaeological findings confirmed historical accuracy of a Bible passage that was previously questioned? I ask that because the claim of "giants in the land" seems rather a minor one to take issue with, when arguments questioning literal 6-day creation or a world-wide flood would appear to be stronger. When you think about it, what's so unbelievable about ancient giants for a Darwinist, given the size and strength of some of our alleged ape ancestors? haha!
Regarding the rush to judgment by the press and science community over the Cardiff Giant discovery, can you think of any modern examples that suggest, "the more things change, the more they stay the same"? For instance, is there really an accurate equation to model something so complex as climate change and predict future impact with any certainty? Economists have models to predict business cycles, yet likely did not predict the recent woes, and climate change may be even harder to get a long-term grip on. In journalism, can you cite cases where political reporting was less than objective? In other words, tie historical mistakes to current issues, because we're not immune today from looking silly.
Next, has an increase in critical thinking been the main benefit of Darwin's Theory? Hull's hoax is an example of a Darwinist exposing the need for improvements in many areas of research. To what degree is Darwinism responsible for the 20th century rise of state-imposed atheism and "survival of the fittest" literalism? Many other discussions may be possible, cutting across a variety of academic specialties. Thus, I recommend "A Colossal Hoax", both for the entertainment value of the topic, and for the potential to spark consideration of more serious issues.

Unbelievable, hilarious...Great book!

I had almost no knowledge about the Cardiff Giant before coming across this gem. What an amazing and unbelievable story...It's hard to believe so many people were fooled so badly!
While the lives of the perpetrators are given extraordinary depth and detail throughout the book, the depiction of 1869 America is what truly tells the tale. Tribble does an excellent job of placing the hoax within the context of the times, exploring how the state of the nation played a major role in its success.
An extremely enjoyable book, very well written, and highly recommended.
