Rivals for Power is a lively and up to date description of the power struggle between the president and Congress. In it, leading congressional and presidential scholars and knowledgeable former public officials consider the historical, political, and constitutional foundations of conflict between the two branches. The authors give practical advice about how to build cooperative policymaking between the president and Congress as they struggle over major crises in solving economic problems and addressing domestic issues and the challenges in defense and foreign policy making. The book features original academic research and practitioner knowledge from the White House and the Hill. This fourth edition includes all new essays with unique and critical viewpoints on the role of the president and Congress in the policy making process. Many of the essays focus on lessons learned about cooperation and conflict between the two branches from the Clinton and Bush presidencies. The essays include preliminary analyses of President Barack ObamaOs relationship with Congress. Because the authors have made major contributions as congressional and presidential scholars, and have played key roles in Congress, in the White House, in the media, and as lobbyists, each chapter presents a different perspective. This new edition of Rivals for Power is intended for students, scholars, public officials, the media, and the general public.

Review
Mark Timmons’ Moral Theory: An Introduction provides sympathetic examinations of a comprehensive range of ethical theories, balanced by judicious critical arguments. Adding a valuable chapter on ethical egoism, the second edition updates the discussions and extremely useful lists of further readings. The addition of “empirical readings” is especially welcome. Clearly written and peppered with contemporary examples, Moral Theory is an excellent resource for students and instructors alike. (Holly Smith, Rutgers University)

The second edition of the textbook by Mark Timmons on normative ethics constitutes a significant improvement on what was already a superb achievement. Timmons discusses the basic ideas and new developments in moral theory, and he presents arguments in such a clear fashion that advanced undergraduates will love the text. This edition is the best upper-level textbook on moral theory of any I have seen. (Brad Hooker, University of Reading (UK))

About the Author
Mark Timmons is professor of philosophy at the University of Arizona. He has published extensively on topics in moral theory, metaethics, and Kant’s ethics. He is author of Morality without Foundations (1999) and editor of Oxford Studies in Normative Ethics.

Content is excellent, Kindle formatting is not!
By Lily025
This is an excellent book to use along with an anthology for strong students new to ethical theory. Until problems with the Kindle edition are fixed, however, Imsuggest getting it in another format. Really, that's all I want to convey I've already contracted to publisher about the problems. Perhaps the worst issue is a numbering problem with the numbering of steps in inset arguments. When arguments are presented, the numbers are incorrect after the first step or two. The first couple of steps might be marked 1, 2, but then after some explanation, the next steps, which should be, 3, 4, etc., revert to 1, 2. The text might go on to refer to steps 5 or 6, but all the reader gets is a lot of steps labeled 1 or 2. This needs to be fixed. Timmons has made an effort to build and analyze arguments step by step; this formatting error means that readers too must expend effort in order to figure out the correct numbering (i.e., is it really a new 1, 2, or should this continue as 3, 4?) Not hard for me, but not something I want my students to have to deal with. I cannot recommend this version to my students. And I'm not pleased to have spent $17 for it myself! I've also found the endnotes to be non-operational. But I'm reading on an iPad; maybe they work on a Kindle. Not sure.

Review
This text features the important classic writings in environmental ethics vital to any effective representation of the subject, while also including a significant number of new voices, enabling students and instructors to gain a sense of the currency and liveliness of the field. Especially valuable, and setting this book apart from most textbooks in environmental ethics, are the 'In The First Person' vignettes from a range of environmental specialists, philosophers, and activists who give eloquent response to the question of why earth care matters. This text shows that environmental ethics is truly theory-in-action; as a field of study it does not merely identify salient conceptual and practical environmental problems, but strives to do something about them. Amazing Read
By Ashlyn Yocom, Indiana State University, Indiana
I actually purchased this book for a college course I am currently taking, the price was fantastic. As I am in the first month of the semester we have read almost 4 chapters, this book really opens your eyes on the world as well as the critical issues we are facing all together in the present day. If you want to read something that will blow your mind, then read this book because I promise your ethics, morals, and values will be in considerable question.

Great Anthology! No Index?
By A&B
This is a well-rounded collection of texts by some very insightful authors. I was so disappointed, however, to find that there is no index whatsoever. I understand it would have taken a great deal of time to create one, but still.... The headings and titles are clear and concise, though, so I suppose that helps.

From Booklist
Glassé’s Concise Encyclopedia of Islam (Harper and Row) was first published in 1989, followed by a revised edition entitled the New Encyclopedia of Islam (AltaMira) that appeared in 2001. This third edition consists of more than 1,400 entries, including new entries of contemporary interest for Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (a paramilitary organization in Pakistan) and the Taliban. Both a scholar of Islam and a practicing Muslim, Glassé provides an accessible and sympathetic introduction for the general reader to aspects of religious belief, practice, and prayer in Islam; biographical information on theologians and political leaders; and much more. Entries are extensively cross-referenced, and the work concludes with a concise bibliography. Also included are color plates as well as maps of the Islamic world, a schematic representation of branches within Islam, and some genealogical tables. A chronology of important events in the history of Islam has been updated through 2007. Unfortunately, there is still no index. That an individual scholar produced a single-volume reference work of this scope and historical depth is impressive. A scholarly review of the first edition, however, not only praised it as an accessible introduction but also raised concerns about the accuracy and tendentious nature of many entries, especially those concerned with the Shi’a tradition within Islam and complex intellectual traditions such as Islamic philosophy and theology. Another single-volume introduction to Islam, written by a team of scholars and subjected to broader peer review, is the Oxford Dictionary of Islam (2003). Libraries with extensive collections on Islam may want to acquire this new edition. Libraries looking for basic information on Islam should add this new edition only with the understanding that in the case of some entries, the scholarly jury is still out. --Christopher McConnell

(Huston Smith, from the Introduction)

Highly recommended. (CHOICE, December 2008)

Visually appealing and easy to consult.... Simple, clearly written, and accessible to readers with no prior knowledge of Islam. (Muhammed Hassanali American Reference Books Annual, March 2009)

For one man to write an encyclopedia of Islam may seem presumptuous, but for readers to know that a third updated edition of it has appeared, in addition to the earlier publication by the same man of several editions of a concise form of it, may be a sobering thought, and a call for a sense of awe in view of his massive task and achievement….the entries in Glassé’s encyclopedia are informative and reliable. They describe all aspects of Islam, from its beliefs, rituals, and prayers to its religious sects and political movements; and they deal with its social institutions and artistic achievements as well as with its spiritual expression and mystical content. (MESA Bulletin)

About the Author
Cyril Glassé is a practicing Muslim and an international lecturer on Islam and comparative religion.

Valuable and Highly Recommended
By DK
Since I've owned the 3rd edition of the New Encyclopedia of Islam I've found it a fascinating and indispensable companion to reading Middle Eastern history as well as that of adjoining regions such as the Balkans and Central Asia. The Encyclopedia and the accompanying long chronology of significant events, reaching to the present year, are especially useful for building perspective and understanding of current developments in these areas and, increasingly, elsewhere. I actually appreciated as well having it as a reference while reading Salman Rushdie's The Enchantress of Florence. The Encyclopedia is at heart a remarkable compendium of information and lore--comprehensive, synthetic, and articulate--on a variety of issues and historical points for which Islam has had any relevance whatever. The bibliography is quite interesting and varied, with deep sources. In the reading, the transliteration style of words from Arabic is detailed and consistent. In all, the author's command of facts and developments and linguistic contexts, and his obvious enthusiasm for the topics, recommend this volume highly.

Very well done reference.
By David Owens
This is a large-but not too large-dictionary of Islamic terms, people, events, cities, rituals, anything Islamic. Of course, any book could be expanded to multiple volume, but I wanted something reasonably comprehensive at a reasonable price. This book does that. I actually started reading it from the
beginning. The author has a tendency-one I like-of rambling on and introducing other people or events into the discussion of whatever you are reading about. They threw in some color plates of some mosques, prayer rituals, and some other stuff, but otherwise it is devoid of drawings of any kind.
Scholars will want to spend $700-2500 on multiple volume encyclopedias, but for the rest of us, this is fine.

Concise but biased
By Zach
Very large book containing many subjects, written in an easy to read and understand manner. But sadly the author is extremely biased when it comes to Shi'ism, the major sect of Islam that is practiced in Iran, Lebanon, Iraq, and sizable populations in Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Yemen, Syria and Nigeria. I was greatly disappointed as I read thru the author's attempt to debase Shi'ism; hardly a fair and accurate report. I should have read Booklist's review (see below) before purchasing.

"A scholarly review of the first edition, however, not only praised it as an accessible introduction but also raised concerns about the accuracy and tendentious nature of many entries, especially those concerned with the Shi'a tradition within Islam"

Ill have to look into the Oxford History of Islam before I can recommend that as an alternative for something concise and comprehensive. But if looking for accurate information on Shi'i Islam, I would suggest Shi'ite Islam by Tabatabai, and for the beginner, Islamic Teachings An Overview by Tabatabai.

From Publishers Weekly
Part of Rowman & Littlefield's new series of condensed texts for mass communication courses, this work runs the gamut from linguist Roman Jakobson's and political scientist Harold Lasswell's communication models to Marshall McLuhan's "the medium is the message" theory. Because Berger, a communications professor emeritus at San Francisco State University, quotes more than he hypothesizes on his own, the book feels like an anthology. It serves as a generally thorough overview of mass communication theories, attempting to present both sides of scholastic arguments, and includes a helpful glossary. Unfortunately, however, the writing is flaccid and poorly organized. Berger divides chapters into short, shallow sub-sections and supplements them with often-random epigraphs, redundant charts and simplistic illustrations. When the author does hazard an opinion, it falls flat for lack of evidence, coherence and conviction. General readers looking for an insightful look at the relationship between media and society should look elsewhere.

Review
Media and Society provides me with an interesting, provocative, entertaining, and easily understood tool to introduce my students to the intricacies of media influences on American culture. The text's organization around several salient focal points simplifies what other comprehensive mass media texts obscure with voluminous information. Berger's text prompts my students to engage in thoughtful discussion and allows me to creatively supplement the material with relevant, timely examples. This is one textbook my students actually read and enjoy . . . a rare 'find' in over ten years of teaching media courses. (Campbell, Cheri Ellis)

Whether you are a casual observer or serious student of our media-drenched American culture, Arthur Asa Berger's newly revised and updated Media and Society comes highly recommended. Professor Berger's clear, comprehensible writing and discussion makes difficult media theories and techniques of cultural analysis accessible, relatable, and exciting. After much trial and error with other textbooks, I've used this work—and several of Dr. Berger's more than three dozen works—with great success in the classroom. There are few introductory texts that consistently provide students with those elusive 'ah-ha!' moments. With Berger's book, I see it happen time and time again. I simply cannot recommend it to you more highly. (Bob Pondillo)

Debating the Reagan Presidency (Debating Twentieth-Century America), by John Ehrman, Michael W. Flamm

The presidency of Ronald Reagan has become a Rorschach Test for politicians and citizens alike. While many conservatives see the Reagan era of the 1980s as the high-water mark for their movement and a time of national recovery from the difficulties of the 1970s, many liberals maintain that the rosy Reagan legacy is based largely on myth, and that in fact his eight years as president caused serious harm to the country. John Ehrman and Michael W. Flamm give due attention to the lasting controversies surrounding the Reagan record and provide a balanced view of the fortieth president's foreign and domestic policies. Students are encouraged to draw their own conclusions by reading key primary documents.

Review
John Ehrman and Michael Flamm have provided an excellent guide to the presidency of Ronald Reagan, one that will help readers understand this important and still controversial period in our recent history. (Brinkley, Alan)

Both essays are sympathetic to Reagan yet well balanced while also well written. To accompany their essays, the authors have compiled a bibliography and have included 15 brief primary documents, such as excerpts from Reagan's 1981 inaugural address and from his famous 1983 "evil empire" speech. The result, although conceived primarily for use in classrooms, is a good, concise summary of the major issues of the Reagan presidency. (Library Journal)

This well-conceived and well-constructed volume will be a welcome addition to any syllabus covering Ronald Reagan or the 1980s. The two essays are comprehensive and balanced; the supporting primary source documents are well-chosen and excellent complements to the nuanced arguments. Highly recommended. (Gil Troy)

A Debate Without Debate
By Jonathan Mark Henderson
It is unfortunate that a book titled "Debating the Reagan Presidency" is so biased, though I suppose there is little other way to present a President who is near worshipful status to a group of aging conservatives. The information in the book is accurate and well presented but the slant which the authors present towards Reagan's presidency is almost unacceptable. "Debating the Reagan presidency" includes very little debate its slant towards the glory of conservatism, Reagan's importance, supply side economics, and communism is discouraging.

If you are looking for an unbiased account of Reagan don't look for a book wherein Reagan's biggest mishaps, thousands of workers losing their jobs, and the sort of economic thinking that led towards our current crisis--are met with a standing ovation.

Ancient Rome, by William E. Dunstan

Ancient Rome masterfully synthesizes the vast period from the second millennium BCE to the sixth century CE, carrying readers through the succession of fateful steps and agonizing crises that marked Roman evolution from an early village settlement to the capital of an extraordinary realm extending from northern Britain to the deserts of Arabia. A host of world-famous figures come to life in these pages, including Alexander the Great, Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Cleopatra, Augustus, Livia, Cicero, Nero, Hadrian, Diocletian, Constantine, Justinian, and Theodora. Filled with chilling narratives of violence, lust, and political expediency, this book not only describes empire-shaping political and military events but also treats social and cultural developments as integral to Roman history. William E. Dunstan highlights such key topics as the physical environment, women, law, the roles of slaves and freedmen, the plight of unprivileged free people, the composition and power of the ruling class, education, popular entertainment, food and clothing, marriage and divorce, sex, death and burial, finance and trade, scientific and medical achievements, religious institutions and practices, and artistic and literary masterpieces. All readers interested in the classical world will find this a fascinating and compelling history.

beautifully written with depth and breadth
By doc peterson
A caveat is in order: this is ostensibly a textbook for a 200-level course on ancient Rome. That qualification stated, it scarcely reads like a textbook. More than the volume of information Dunstan covers (and he covers a huge field of information), the writing is what struck me the most. I read a lot of textbooks (a professional hazzard) and I am always cognizant of the ages-old complaint by students that "the text is boring." (Suck it up - this is college. Learn to love it.) _Ancient Rome_ is the standard for how history texts should be written: it is engaging, well-organized and discusses in detail not only the political events of ancient Rome, but also the econcomic, cultural, literary and artistic developments of 1000 years of classical history.

The first third of the text covers the Roman republic (roughly from 476 BCE - 44 BCE). The geography of the peninsula and early Etruscan influences are briefly addressed before the history of the republic (and its gradual expansion) is addressed. The strength of the book, however, is its depth - providing the broader political context of the time period, Dunstan goes on to show the cultural changes that took place alongside (and as a result of) the politics.

The bulk of the book is concerned with imperial Rome (from the ascendency of Caesar to the reign of Odoacer and Theodoric in the 5th century CE). As with the republican period, politics are used as the springboard for a closer examination of Rome as an institution culturally and economically. The interrelationship of these aspects of Rome, Dunstan shows, is critical in understanding why Rome was (and is) so important to the west today. His presentation of the parade of empeorors after Octavian (Augustus) breathes life into palace intrigue and insight into the personalities of these powerful rulers; however, attention is also provided to the faceless masses who, for so long, have served as "set decoration" in most histories of the age. That Dunstan gives these common Romans voice is both refreshing and part of the strength of the book.

His discussion of the birth and growth of the early Church was of particular interest. Dunstan again does a remarkable job of writing about the historical Jesus and the growth (and conflict) of the new religion. The only negative remark I can make regards his discussion of the Byzantine Empire - he ends the text with the reign of Justinian (d. 565), while I think Heraclius (r. 610 - 641) would have made a better ending point, given his exclusive attention to the East and policy of "writing off" the "western" Roman Empire. Admittedly this is hair-splitting, and there are a number of excellent reasons why the text concludes with Justinian - further testament to the thought and strength of the book.

For classicists, there is little new here. For students of classical history, this is a "must have" book, if only as a starting point for further reading or research. For history "geeks" or those simply interested in top-shelf history written in accessable language with a super-abundance of detail, look no further. Highly recommended.

Good, but Cary is better
By Peter Smallhill
The strengths of this book are its comprehensiveness and its readibility. It covers everything important for a survey of ancient Rome, including politics, the endless wars, daily life and culture. Its prose is easy to read and divided neatly into bite-sized chunks which help one absorb the large amount of information presented. The maps and illustrations are generally excellent (see below).

There is a tinge of political correctness to the book:
-- the author often emphasizes Roman cruelty and deceitfulness in foreign affairs, for example in its treatment of former allies Rhodes and Pergamum. While these charges are probably justified, they imply that Rome's behavior was worse than other states of the time, which is questionable.
-- in domestic Roman politics the author tends to side with "all citizens" against the "ruling class" and "voracious wealthy". This perspective colors his presentation, causing discussion of issues like land redistribution to miss nuance.
-- he correctly treats the Senate as a powerful elite but does not then explain why in 129 BC senators were suddenly excluded from the knighthood class, many of whom were businessmen - a division of power which had huge impact on politics thereafter, and doesn't fit the mold of "citizens" against the "rich".
-- Dunstan trendily spices up the book with sexuality, including the old news that homosexuality was openly accepted. He gets explicit about the do's and don'ts, and includes an illustration of a boy reaching for a man's genitals. There is also an illustration of Tiberius fooling around in Capri, though it is based only on "spicy whispers". A rather breathless discussion about Near Eastern temple prostitution in the section on Carthage concludes that it's uncertain whether it was practiced there - a bit of an anticlimax.
-- although the author accepts convention in the use of names, stating at the outset that he will use latinized forms of Greek names because they are "firmly rooted", he insists on replacing the even more rooted BC with "BCE" and AD with "CE". This simply causes reader irritation.

Rowman and Littlefield did a good job of editing, but a poor job of producing this book. Student "citizens" required to pay $109 for a copy will find a plasticy cover, albeit featuring a busty marble Roman babe (who may not have been truly Roman at all - p. 370) having a wardrobe malfunction; and the book is held together by a cheap glued binding. Mine cracked the first time I opened it.

Dunstan's book has significant strengths. After a few hundred pages, however, one feels fatigued by the burden of factual accumulation not balanced by deep insights about the broader meaning of what is presented. This caused me to move over to M. Cary's "History of Rome", which I found to be a masterpiece of historical prose, enjoyable to read both in its detail and its depth.

Even though this book was a required text book for a history class, it was a great read. It was easy to read and filled with interesting and useful information that was not weighted down with flowery sentences. It was like having a massive history chanel series on Ancient Rome in one book. I recommend to everyone who has an interest in this subject.

How Do Catholics Read the Bible? (The Come & See Series), by S. J. Daniel J. Harrington

Do Catholics really read the Bible? If so, how do they read it and is there anything unique about their approach? What role does the Bible play in Catholic life, teaching, and culture?

As a leading Scripture scholar who also teaches students and preaches to everyday people, Fr. Daniel Harrington, S.J., has made it his life's mission to answer these and many related questions about the Bible and its relationship to Catholic life. Accessibly written, How Do Catholics Read the Bible? blends biblical scholarship with compelling personal anecdotes to equip readers with the tools they need to more fully engage Scripture and the Catholic tradition. With chapters on how the Catholic canon came to be, what the Church teaches about the Bible, appropriate methods for analyzing Scripture passages, and how to incorporate the Bible into everyday life, this book is ideal for individual or group use in parishes and classrooms. Each chapter concludes with questions for reflection and recommendations for further reading.

Review
A splendid companion to the Bible. A sure guide through issues that need to be understood if the reader is to appreciate how the Bible is 'the Word of God in human language.' (Emil A. Wcela, Auxiliary Bishop, Diocese of Rockville Centre and past President, Catholic Biblical Association)

Dan Harrington has the uncanny ability to make the complex, understandable and the profound, accessible to ordinary readers. In this volume, he brings together wise reflections on methods of interpreting Scripture today with examples from his own experience of interpreting Scripture for parish communities. How do Catholics Read the Bible is a reliable guide for every Catholic who has waited for a straightforward and clearly written introduction to reading the Bible in the Church today. (Barbara E. Bowe, R.S.C.J., Professor of Biblical Studies, Catholic Theological Union)

A superb synthesis of Catholic views on biblical interpretation, written by one of the church's best practitioners. (The Bible Today)

This volume, both concise and informative, constitutes a significant contribution to that pedogogical effort and is a splendid gift to general readers....In sum, both church and academy can welcome this book as a valuable vade mecum in biblical studies, as much for the informed access it provides to the thought of others as for Harrington's own exegesis. (Mark Kiley, April 2008 H-Net: Humanities and Social Science Reviews Online)

This little volume is both interesting and enlightening....This book gives good insight to Roman Catholic interpretation. (James R. Walker Ph.D, Director of Web-Based Education and Associate Professor, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary)

Harrington's book is a wonderfully clear, balanced, and accessible presentation of how the Catholic Church at its best understands and uses the Bible. This book should prove very helpful for a wide audience of Catholics and others who are interested in understanding the Bible in its historical contexts and, even more importantly, in their daily lives and in the life of the Church today. The book's style is always user-friendly. Harrington explains unfamiliar terms clearly and gives helpful examples of what he means. The book obviously reflects Harrington's thirty years of teaching, preaching, and praying over the biblical text. (Thomas H. Tobin, S.J., Professor of Theology, Loyola University Chicago)

HOW DO CATHOLICS READ THE BIBLE
By Mermaid
I purchased HOW DO CATHOLICS READ THE BIBLE from Amazon.com as a required text for an online course I'm taking. It contains a wealth of information for both new and cradle Catholics as to how we actually read and/or interpret what we read in the Bible. The author is a Jesuit Priest, also an expert in the Holy Scriptures having studied them most of his life, who teaches the subject as well. You don't have to be a student as I am; it's worth the read just for the knowledge contained therein.

An Excellent "Academic" Introduction
By Jeremy J. Priest
Fr. Harrington has given us a fine introduction to reading the Bible for Catholics. He covers all the essentials and gives due attention to the reading of the text as it is, without spending an inordinate amount of time on the essentially speculative nature of source-critical methods. Following the Pontifical Biblical Commission's lead, he is careful not to enshrine the historical-critical method as the only way to read the Bible. In this way he opens the reader up to wider perspectives of reasoned interpretation on the text as a human document, while always bringing the reader back to the divine nature of the text as well.

While he steers clear of controversies, he fails to recognize that the "pastoral" Vatican II did indeed settle some theological debates and went on to explicitly affirm a great deal of the tradition. Harrington seems to advocate the perspective of "limited innerancy" by either (at best) solely emphasizing or (at worst) fallaciously implying that "for the sake of our salvation" is meant to limit the scope of the "saving truth" that is "without error" (p. 34, quoting Dei Verbum 11). Dei Verbum 11 states that "Everything asserted by the inspired authors or sacred writers must be held to be asserted by the Holy Spirit." In addition to this, Dei Verbum goes on to say that the sacred writers or authors wrote "ALL and ONLY those things which he [God] wished to be written" (11, emphasis mine). If this is the case, then the answer to inerrancy is not to limit it arbitrary to what we consider to be "saving truth," but to strive to discover what has been asserted by the sacred writer, because what is asserted by the writer is also asserted by the Holy Spirit (cf. DV 11). Furthermore, Augustin Cardinal Bea SJ, who was closely associated with the text of Dei Verbum at the Council, has written about this matter in his book, "The Word of God and Mankind." Speaking of the connection between "saving truth" and the possibility that "for the sake of our salvation" limits such inerrancy, Cardinal Bea writes that "there is not the slightest sign of any such inidication." Clarifying, he writes that "the phrase in which the text speaks of salvation explains God's purpose in causing the Scriptures to be written, and not the nature of the truth enshrined therein." It is clear, not only from this but from the footnotes that the council cites in this section of Dei Verbum, that the Council fathers clearly affirmed inerrancy in the same tradition as St. Thomas Aquinas, Leo XIII, and Pius XII, and did not embrace in any sense a restricted form of inerrancy. For an excellent look at inerrancy, see Aidan Nichols OP "The Shape of Catholic Theology," published by The Liturgical Press, 1991.

Despite this, Father Harrinton's book is excellent. The only remaining flaw is that it fails to give a real introduction to the Scriptures as the means of an encounter with Christ. Father Harrinton asserts something like this on several occasions and even does a fine job of describing lectio divina. However, there is little in this introduction that introduces one to the Scriptures in a way that they become the means of an encounter with Christ. As such, this remains an academic book and in a certain sense fails to be a full introduction to the way Catholics read the Bible. With this reservation, I still recommend this book highly.

An eye opener
By minga
This is a very small and short book but it is pack with lots of information. When I read the title I figured it was going to cover how laity catholics read the bible but it told the big story as to how theologians, the magisterium, priest and all catholics read the bible, very intersting.

Review
Ariel (Laura and Alvin Siegal College of Judaic Studies) offers a helpful, readable introduction to the complex, arcane world of kabbalah. Most importantly, the book is an accurate description of its subject (not always true for books on Jewish mysticism). Following a useful review of scholarly views on the nature of mysticism, Ariel presents a brief history of Jewish mysticism from the 6th century BCE and the prophecy of Ezekiel following the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem, to the composition and publication of the most famous work of kabbalah, the Zohar, at the end of the 13th century. Two chapters review the esoteric doctrines of the Zohar, especially the Sefiroth, God's emanated attributes; included is a discussion of the Shekinah, the feminine aspect of the divine. Four additional chapters take up other central topics, such as the meaning of Torah according to the kabbalists, the destiny of one's soul, the mystical meaning of Jewish ritual obligations (mitzvot), the practice of meditation, and the influence of kabbalah in Hasidism. Overall, this is a wide-ranging, thoughtfully constructed, user-friendly introduction to kabbalah. Libraries serving Judaica and religion programs will want to purchase it. . . . Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates through graduate students. (M. F. Nefsky, emerita, University of Lethbridge CHOICE, October 2006)

This is the first book in the post Kabbalah is chic era that does not sacrifice personal meaning for intellectual depth. David Ariel has found that very special place from which to teach Kabbalah. He is analyst and participant, objective scholar and passionate believer and thus speaks to our minds and hearts. (Rabbi Irwin Kula, President, National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership (CLAL))

Kabbalah: The Mystic Quest In Judaism by David Ariel is the first book to provide an intellectual focus on Kabbalah, providing a scholarly study of Jewish mysticism suitable for the nonspecialist as well as the Jewish thinker. People outside the Jewish faith are exploring concepts of Kabbalah and applying them to life situations, so this revised edition represents the perfect study for all faiths to provide a focus on academic scholarship and understanding Jewish mysticism. From basic concepts of the divine world in the Kabbalah to the influences of Greek and other philosophies, Kabbalah: The Mystic Quest In Judaism is packed with memorable insights. (Midwest Book Review)

David Ariel has produced a wonderful description and explication of Kabbalah in his work Kabbalah: the Mystic Quest in Judaism. (Jewish Book World)
