Chinese Among Others: Emigration in Modern Times (State & Society in East Asia), by Philip A. Kuhn

In this book, distinguished historian Philip A. Kuhn tells the remarkable five-century story of Chinese emigration as an integral part of China's modern history. Although emigration has a much longer past, its "modern" phase dates from the sixteenth century, when European colonialists began to collaborate with Chinese emigrants to develop a worldwide trading system. The author explores both internal and external migration, complementary parts of a far-reaching process of adaptation that enabled Chinese families to deal with their changing social environments. Skills and institutions developed in the course of internal migration were creatively modified to serve the needs of emigrants in foreign lands.

As emigrants, Chinese inevitably found themselves "among others." The various human ecologies in which they lived have faced Chinese settlers with a diversity of challenges and opportunities in the colonial and postcolonial states of Southeast Asia, in the settler societies of the Americas and Australasia, and in Europe. Kuhn traces their experiences worldwide alongside those of the "others" among whom they settled: the colonial elites, indigenous peoples, and rival immigrant groups that have profited from their Chinese minorities but also have envied, feared, and sometimes persecuted them. A rich selection of primary sources allows these protagonists a personal voice to express their hopes, sorrows, and worldviews.

The post-Mao era offers emigrants new opportunities to leverage their expatriate status to do business with a Chinese nation eager for their investments, donations, and technologies. The resulting "new migration," the author argues, is but the latest phase of a centuries-old process by which Chinese have sought livelihoods away from home.

Review
Kuhn's experience in studying Chinese history enables him to offer an interesting perspective on Chinese migration in Chinese Among Others. The book is noteworthy for its ambitious global scope. Kuhn's insightful main argument contends that there is a symbiotic relationship between modern Chinese history and the history of Chinese migration. Chinese Among Others has broken new ground in providing such food for thought. (Leander Seah Chinese Studies)

Chinese Among Others is the first book to attempt a synthetic history of Chinese migration around the world from the sixteenth century to the present. . . . [L]ively and accessible . . . appropriate for undergraduate courses while retaining complexity and diverse insights for the specialist. . . . [A] timely achievement that both summarizes the state of the field and offers distinct interpretations, helping readers take stock and move forward in new directions. (Adam McKeown Journal of Asian Studies)

Kuhn's conceptual clarity, the enlightening way in which he weaves the story of Chinese migration into both national and global histories, and his vivid writing―supplemented with excerpts from primary sources―makes it an excellent text for students. (The China Journal)

This is a rich and well-written narrative of great ambition, erudition, and insight. It offers compelling and carefully constructed bridges between the fields of Chinese, ethnic, and migration studies. (Journal of American Ethnic History)

Demonstrating his remarkable historical and historiographical knowledge, Philip A. Kuhn’s Chinese Among Others is the most comprehensive synthetic account of the saga of the modern Chinese diaspora. Nobody else before him has captured the long and complicated process of the Chinese diaspora so clearly and so insightfully. This book represents a landmark in the study of this extremely important topic. . . . This well-researched and well-written book represents a monumental step toward establishing the studies of the Chinese diaspora as a coherent field of inquiry. (Yong Chen H-Net: Humanities and Social Science Reviews Online)

Philip Kuhn has written a comprehensive history of the Chinese diaspora, from premodern southern Chinese maritime networks to transformations wrought by colonialism and war in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Crisply written and sympathetic but not sentimental, Chinese Among Others is magisterial in sweep, concept, and execution. (Mae M. Ngai, Columbia University)

Philip Kuhn dug deep into the history of China before turning to pursue the many generations of Chinese migrants around the world. He has an astute sensitivity for the lives of dislodged peoples and an exceptional capacity to find the core issues in the subject. This is a remarkable book that offers a unique contribution to the growing field of diasporic Chinese history. (Wang Gungwu, National University of Singapore)

Philip Kuhn has long been urging us to study the Chinese globally, and in this benchmark volume he skillfully weaves together a tapestry of world Chinese history. (Edgar Wickberg, University of British Columbia)

An impressive work. The very conception, a world-historical treatment of the Chinese diaspora, is original. For me, the intellectual excitement comes from the fresh perspective that Kuhn qua consummate historian brings to subject matter more often treated in fragmentary fashion by social scientists. Novel conceptualizations and interpretations abound. Kuhn's research is meticulous and his writing is clear. This book will command the attention of China scholars and widen their horizons. (G. William Skinner, University of California, Davis)

By Ricky Issak
This has been an impressive read. This is the most comprehensive illustration of Chinese immigration history I have ever read, and is certainly a reference book that I will constantly review for future study on the subject. However the book lacks the history of Burmese Chinese, which ironically was my point of interest that motivated me to buy this book in the first place. Despite of this disappointment, the book is a worthy investment to make.

Warrant for Terror: The Fatwas of Radical Islam, and the Duty of Jihad (Hoover Studies in Politics, Economics, and Society), by Shmuel Bar

Since September 11, 2001 much has been written about "Islamist terrorism," arguing that it is a perversion that has "hijacked Islam" in the service of social, political and economic grievances. However, such accounts cannot explain why other people that can lay claim to similar or more serious grievances have not developed such devastating religious terrorist ideologies. Moreover, many of the terrorists themselves have attested to their own religious motivation and their belief that they acted in accordance with the precepts of Islam.

In Warrant for Terror Shmuel Bar examines fatwas―legal opinions declaring whether a given act under Islam is obligatory, permitted, or forbidden. Fatwas serve as a major instrument by which religious leaders impel believers to engage in acts of jihad. Bar argues that fatwas, particularly those that come from the Arab world, should not be dismissed as a cynical use of religious terminology in political propaganda. Many terrorists testify that they were motivated to act by them. Indeed, this book shows that Islamic law plays a central role in determining for believers the practical meaning of the duty to jihad.

Bar examines the underlying religious, legal, and moral logic of fatwas and the depth of their influence, particularly in contrast to alternative moderate Islamic interpretations. He explores the wide scope of issues that fatwas deal with, covering almost all facets of Islamic "law of war": the justification for declaring jihad; the territory in which the jihad should be fought; whether women and children may participate in jihad; the legality of killing women, children and other non-combatants; the justification for killing hostages and mutilating their bodies; and the permissibility of diverse tactics and weapons, including suicide attacks and even nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction.

Warrant for Terror also delves into the contradictions between the radical and the mainstr

Drawing on Arabic sources not typically available to English readers, Shmuel Bar outlines the way that fatwas from Muslim religious authorities have in recent years laid a basis for jihadism and terror. Warrant for Terror is critical reading to understand the nature of the challenge posed by radical Islamism today. (Francis Fukuyama, author of The End of History and the Last Man)

If you are sick of instant experts offering sound-bite style insight into the phenomenon of Radical Islam, then Warrant for Terror is the right medicine for you. Through an exhaustive yet refreshingly readable analysis of fatwas―Muslim religious injunctions―Shmuel Bar takes us deep into the minds of both those who issue calls for jihad and those who heed them. As a tool to understand the logic, the rationale, and the motivation of the enemy in the war on terror, this book is sure to be assigned in counter-terror training courses around the world. Thankfully, the rest of us can read it, too. (Robert Satloff, Executive Director, The Washington Institute for Near East Policy)

Shmuel Bar has written one of the most important and compelling books in recent years. If you want to understand Islamic terrorism and jihad, this is the book to read. He has written an absolutely brilliant page-turning analysis of the dynamics underlying radical Jihad today―and for policymakers, analysts and the public, Warrant for Terror will provide you insights that few other books even dare try. This is one of the best books I have ever read on the dynamics of jihad and fatwas. Read it to be educated and to truly understand. Ignore it at your peril. Dr. Bar has performed a wonderful public service by compiling and analyzing the fatwas for us. This book is a bench mark in the literature on Jihad. (Steven Emerson, Executive Director, The Investigative Project on Terrorism)

Non-Muslims rarely pay attention to the religious struggle within Islam. They must, urgently. Radical clerics, wielding the deadly accusation of apostacy, have silenced most mainstream Muslim clerics and regimes in the Muslim world on the issues of jihad and terrorism. We are at serious risk of having hundreds of millions of religiously-driven enemies and deferential followers. (R. James Woolsey, former Director of the CIA; Chairman, Woolsey Partners LLC)

Bar has crafted an important book. This short volume is a must-read for anyone disturbed by the government and media's failure to truly elucidate the underpinnings of the terrorism threat that's here to stay. (The Miami Herald)

Shmuel Bar offers a much needed account of the religious logic that inspires and justifies Islamic radicalism and its terrorist manifestations. His sections on the extremists legal justifications for attacking Americans, fellow Muslims, and particularly Israel are enlightening and useful for anyone who has wondered how religious thinking can be used to support terrorism. (Salt Lake Tribune)

Warrant for Terror offers many insights. (The Bookwatch)

Shmuel Bar offers a much-needed account of the religious logic that inspires and justifies Islamic radicalism and its terrorist manifestations...His conclusion, that the war of ideas within the Muslim world is primarily a religious war, should be taken seriously. (The Dallas Morning News)

Since the author of this hard-hitting book is Israeli, some may dismiss it out of hand, as politically motivated. However, the depth of research, drawn from Arabic sources, should cause every reader to pay attention. It is invaluable for understanding the reasons for radical Islamism in the 21st century. (Middle East Journal)

This is an important book, its limpid prose matching the authority Bar brings to a subject about which we cannot afford to be ignorant. (Literary Review)

It is invaluable for understanding the reasons for radical Islamism in the 21st century. Bar drives home the point that only Muslims can turn the tide....Warrant for Terror is a compelling book. (Warren Larson Middle East Journal)

Abstract

Since September 11, 2001 much has been written about "Islamist terrorism," arguing that it is a perversion that has "hijacked Islam" in the service of social, political and economic grievances. However, such accounts cannot explain why other people that can lay claim to similar or more serious grievances have not developed such devastating religious terrorist ideologies. Moreover, many of the terrorists themselves have attested to their own religious motivation and their belief that they acted in accordance with the precepts of Islam.

Warrant for Terror examines fatwas, which are legal opinions declaring whether a given act under Islam is obligatory, permitted or forbidden and which serve as a major instrument by which religious leaders impel believers to engage in acts of jihad. These fatwas come from all over the Muslim world, but mainly from the Arab world. And they should not be dismissed as a cynical use of religious terminology in political propaganda. Many terrorists testify that they were motivated to act by them. Indeed, this book shows that Islamic law plays a central role in determining for believers the practical meaning of the duty to jihad. It also examines the underlying religious, legal, and moral logic of these fatwas and the depth of their influence in contrast to alternative moderate Islamic interpretations. And the book explores the wide scope of issues that these fatwas deal with, covering almost all facets of Islamic "law of war:" the justification for declaring jihad; the territory in which the jihad should be fought; whether women and children may participate in jihad; the legality of killing women, children and other non-combatants; the justification for killing hostages and mutilating their bodies; and the permissibility of diverse tactics and weapons, including suicide attacks and even nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. This book also delves into the contradictions between the radical and the mainstream narratives and the sources of the weakness of the latter in the face of the former. In the conclusion, the author raises a number of provocative questions relating to the "religious policy" of the West in the face of the threat of Islamic extremism.

A good description of Islamic terrorism and jihad
By Jill Malter
Since this book attacks some truly counterproductive behavior on the part of a politically strong element of Islam, I think we need to put this in perspective. As a Pagan and a Zionist, I strongly oppose religious fanaticism and tyranny. Islamic fundamentalism is just one more in a long line of bad ideas. But I think we need to be careful not to regard Islam as special in this regard. There is indeed a genuine threat to human society right now which is Islamic in nature, and that threat ought not be overestimated, nor underestimated, nor otherwise improperly described. And I think this book is fair here.

It is true that people of other religions, even in recent times, have behaved very badly. One need only look at World War Two, or Rwanda for examples. In order to be intolerant, it is surely neither necessary nor sufficient to be a Muslim! Still, this short book deals, quite properly, with Islam. And it raises an immediate issue. Whether one is a Muslim or not, to what extent ought one tolerate intolerance? I do not have an answer for that question, but I strongly feel that in the long run, intolerance such as what we are seeing today is self-defeating. And at some point, it is best for everyone if it is opposed. Failure to oppose intolerance quickly turns into complicity with it, especially when silence often implies consent.

This book shows that radical Islam is not merely intolerant but is also engaged in a fight against much of the world. And that Islam itself is indeed a characterizing element of Islamic aggression and terror. As the author explains in his introduction, some folks insist on dismissing all threats from Islam, going so far as to label concerned people (including even concerned Muslims) as "Islamophobic" or "bigoted." I think this book shows these folks to be not only wrong but a part of the problem.

Is there a way to fight back against religious leaders who preach in favor of intolerance, aggression, and terror? The author says that there is. Such acts are criminal, and they can be outlawed, with consequences awaiting those who engage in them. Sooner or later, in my opinion, something of this sort will happen. Meanwhile, I think that the Muslim community has to figure out how to avoid constant and costly wars, both within the ummah and against, um, the giaours.

I recommend this book.

From how Islamic law operates to how it determines the duty to jihad
By Midwest Book Review
Plenty has been written about Islamist terrorism, but these writings can't explain why other groups who have even more to complain about haven't developed such religiously-based terrorist ideologies. Warrant For Terror: The Fatwas Of Radical Islam And The Duty To Jihad narrows its focus to the fatwas, legal opinions declaring whether a given act under Islam is permitted, forbidden or obligatory. From how Islamic law operates to how it determines the duty to jihad, Warrant For Terror offers many insights.

The Next Superpower?: The Rise of Europe and Its Challenge to the United States, by Rockwell A. Ambassador Schnabel, Francis X. Rocca

Americans have been recently lectured that 'Americans are from Mars and Europeans are from Venus.' But this slogan fails to account for the economic might of the European Union, which has elevated the EU_and its member countries_to near superpower status. What are the implications of this development for the United States? Ambassador Rockwell A. Schnabel and Francis X. Rocca take up this critical and complex question in a detailed, firsthand analysis of the EU institutions, their leadership, and the member countries. Although Europe today cannot challenge America in military terms, the 25-nation economic giant can influence world events to the benefit or detriment of the United States. This book will answer the timely and crucial question of how the 'rise of Europe will affect U.S. prosperity and security for decades to come.' Ambassador Schnabel dispenses with diplomatic niceties. He is critical of both U.S. and European policies. Schnabel and Rocca give readers a compelling and provocative inside look at the people and issues that will decide whether the world's most consequential partnership flourishes or flounders. While alerting readers to the economic and geopolitical challenges posed by a stronger EU, the authors reject the complacency of those who see American 'unipolarity' as a license to neglect our allies, or those who entertain the illusion that we can 'divide and conquer' Europe. This book will make clear why the U.S. must work with the EU_or expect the EU to work against it.

For more than half a century, the Atlantic Alliance has been the basis for European security and a cornerstone of global stability. Now Europe is beginning to develop a collective military identity of its own, without the participation of the United States. In this timely and insightful book, Ambassador Schnabel identifies the dangers and opportunities arising from the European Union's growing authority in security and defense; and explains why and how Europe and America should reaffirm our historic partnership. (General Joseph W. Ralston, USAF (Ret) Former Supreme Allied Commander, Europe)

The best book yet written on the geopolitical significance of the economic colossus of the European Union and its tendentious relations with America. It is a must-read for Europeans and Americans who are concerned about the future of the Atlantic partnership. (Robert Mundell, Nobel Laureate in Economics, Father of the Euro)

GE knows that the regulations that American companies have to follow―even within America itself―are increasingly set in Brussels. Ambassador Schnabel explains why every global company must understand how the EU affects the way they do business. He also explains why, and how, the United States and Europe should work together for our mutual good. For business people, government policy makers, and other Americans wishing to understand the EU, this book is an indispensable guide. (Jeff Immelt, Chairman & CEO, General Electric Company)

As a European born, naturalized American, with a strong pragmatic business streak, Rock Schnabel brings a singular perspective to EU-U.S. relations. A must read for those who want to understand why this historic alliance is critical to global security and prosperity. (Niall FitzGerald, Chairman, Reuters Ltd.)

Ambassador Schnabel's well-written, intelligent, and entertaining book should be read with profit by Americans and Europeans alike. Americans will learn what has been happening on this side of the Atlantic―some of it with American help. Europeans will discover what we look like to a smart insider and friend. All should recognize that America and Europe are best served when we work together as partners―the rest of the world is better off too. (Lord Patten of Barnes, Chancellor, The University of Oxford)

Schnabel, a successful businessman . . . brings a fresh perspective to transatlantic relations in his book, which should be used as a textbook for American students hoping to learn something new about the European Union and how it operates. ... The author's 'hope that this book will be a small contribution' for better and closer transatlantic cooperation has been fulfilled. (Robert J. Guttman, John Hopkins University Transatlantic: Europe, America and The World)

For Americans who have puzzled over the meaning of Europe's economic and political integration, and for those who have frankly wondered why they should care, Rock Schnabel's book is a revelation. In clear and forceful terms, our former ambassador to Brussels explains what the European Union is, how it works, and how it is changing the world balance of power. (Vernon E. Jordan Jr., Senior Managing Director, Lazard Freres & Co. LLC)

Having worked closely with Ambassador Schnabel during my term as President of the European Parliament I can attest to the pivotal role which he played in the vital arena of EU-U.S. relations. This book is testimony to his insider witness and feel, and a convincing argument that the best option for the future of both Europe and America is one of intelligent interdependence. (Pat Cox, Former President, European Parliament)

America's political and business leaders have long wondered, in Dr. Kissinger's famous phrase, whom they are supposed to call when they want to reach Europe. Ambassador Schnabel's book answers that question, and explains why the rise of the European Union is making transatlantic relations at once more challenging and potentially more fruitful for both sides. (Jorma Ollila, Chairman and CEO, Nokia Corporation)

The Next Superpower is one of the most important books ever written about the European Union, one of the least understood but most important institutions in the world. From an inside perspective, as America's widely respected U.S. Ambassador to the European Union, Rockwell Schnabel clearly and convincingly explains, in ways few have done, how the EU works; its crucial economic and political impacts; the need to support a strong, unified Europe; and the critical importance to U.S. economic and security interests of assuring that in the post-Cold War era, America and Europe remain essential partners in championing democracy, free markets, and human rights around the world. (Stuart E. Eizenstat)

The task of revitalizing the Atlantic alliance is one of the highest priorities for American foreign policy. Only by restoring a sense of common purpose to history's most successful coalition of free-market democracies can the Bush administration achieve its lofty ambition of spreading freedom around the world. Nobody understands this mission better than Rockwell Schnabel, who has served with great distinction in difficult times as the United States ambassador to the European Union. This book explains why transatlantic rivalry is self-defeating and how Europe and America must rebuild their partnership to succeed in coping with the economic and security challenges of the 21st century. (William M. Drozdiak, President, American Council on Germany, Former Foreign Editor, The Washington Post)

Required reading for a rational view of modern Europe.
By Kendrik de Koning
In 2001, $300 billion market-cap Connecticut-based General Electric was moving toward closing a $42 billion deal to acquire New Jersey-based Honeywell. The executives, directors, and shareholders of each company had tendered their approval, as had the regulatory authorities in the United States. But some 3,500 miles away, European bureaucrats sitting in Brussels had other ideas. The threat to the international aerospace industry, they said, was just too great to risk letting these U.S. based companies combine as they had already agreed. And that's where the deal stopped.

Rockwell Schnabel-until a few months ago U.S. Ambassador to the European Union-essentially put U.S. business interests on notice that, like it or not, this is the new reality, and understanding the construct within which European commerce now takes place is critical to success in that very large market. The Next Superpower? is a brief yet highly insightful book that will serve as an indispensable primer to every American businessman trying to comprehend and penetrate the increasingly formidable market that is the European Union. In 188 pages, Schnabel, together with co-author Francis Rocca, takes the reader from the history and economic theories behind the formation of the EU, to what is essentially a How-To guide through its institutions, and those of its member states.

Those looking for an ideologically-charged paper in the vein of either Robert Kagan ("Of Paradise and Power"), or, conversely, Joseph Nye ("The Paradox of American Power"), will be disappointed. While the Ambassador clearly has a firm grasp on these competing views, this is a book that is about the practical realities of getting things done. The comparison, for instance, of the opposing dirigiste tradition of socialist France and the (classical) liberalism of Adam Smith, while worthwhile topics unto themselves, are clearly addressed with the purpose of giving the businessman, politician, and diplomat an historical and cultural framework as they move down what is an irreversible path toward free markets and capitalism in its highest form.

Schnabel, himself raised in the Netherlands-not exactly a hotbed of American-style conservatism-and clearly an admirer of much of the European tradition, has very much perfected the American way of doing business and getting things done. His career path apparently took him from young immigrant, to investment banker, to the Reagan and George H.W. Bush Administrations, to technology fund principal (starting in 1993...not bad timing) and back to public service as EU Ambassador. It would seem that the "revolving door" between public and private sector has, in this case anyway, served the U.S. very well indeed.

An Insider's Guide to the Future of the EU
By Christine
As a US student in global political affairs in Washington, DC, I have spent many hours debating what it means to be considered a "superpower," who rivals the US for the title, and who is essentially the next "superpower." Rockwell Schnabel and Francis X. Rocca's well-researched book sheds light on the existing power dynamics of modern Europe and the EU in global society and what implications this 25 member state holds for our future. With its ever-impressive economic strengths coupled with its cultural and institutional influences, they believe the European Union should be viewed as a force to be reckoned with, but more importantly as a strong ally. Rockwell Schnabel draws from his experiences as a native European citizen and former ambassador to the EU to highlight crucial choices the EU must make if it is to become geopolitically stronger and, in fact, be the next superpower. Long- term decisions regarding a free market economy and Europe's stance towards the US will not only have direct impacts on American businesses, but also on global security. Considering the rising power of nations like China and India, transatlantic cooperation provides an opportunity to unite to achieve our common goals. By pooling vast resources together, the US and EU can have real effects on world hunger, poverty, and disease.

The Next Superpower? unites theoretical concepts with observations to provide insightful, yet critical analysis of global affairs from a US/EU perspective. It is a must read for every student of politics, economics, or business who cares about the future of the US, Europe, and the world.

Europe!!! The Next Superpower;Believe It
By J. Upchurch
I just finished reading Amabassador Schnabel's excellent book and realize how little I understood or knew about the EU. Many of us have been a bit overwhelmed by all the China and India growth stories; as a result, I for one, have totally missed the boat on what's happening in Europe. If I had a choice of where to spend the next 20 years in business, I would clearly choose the European Union (even after reading The World is Flat while on a trip to India). Because the US and the EU have "common values" and huge economic power, we together have the opportunity to "shape the world" in the next two decades. After that, we will be forced to share this power with the emerging Asian giants.

I have given the book to my college son to increase his awareness of the EU and its importance to the United States, up to now it's been all China. I think his views may change after reading this book, besides, Europe is a great place for kids his age!!!!

Highly recommended reading and much easier to consume than certain other "World......" books.

Brent Scowcroft: Internationalism and Post-Vietnam War American Foreign Policy (Biographies in American Foreign Policy), by David F. Schmi

As National Security Advisor to President Gerald Ford, advisor to President Ronald Reagan, and as National Security Advisor to President George H. W. Bush, Brent Scowcroft was at the center of the ongoing debate over how to shape American foreign policy in the post-war world. As David F. Schmitz makes clear in his new biography, Scowcroft was a realist in his outlook on American foreign policy and an heir to the Cold War internationalism that had shaped that policy since 1945. During his most important service, as George H. W. Bush's national security advisor, Scowcroft sought to work with like-minded Republicans and Democrats to construct a post-Cold War foreign policy that would provide consistency and stability to American policymaking in a rapidly changing international environment, defend the internationalist position from challenges and criticisms, and buffer the conduct of diplomacy from the turbulence of domestic politics. The type of bi-partisan cooperation and internationalism that marked the pre-Vietnam War years served as Scowcroft's guide to how to defend American interests and promote U.S. values and institutions globally. While not always successful, Scowcroft provided a consistent internationalist voice in the midst of change.

Review
Few figures dominate the landscape of American diplomacy during the Cold War's latter half like Brent Scowcroft, the only man to serve two different Presidents as National Security Advisor. David F. Schmitz captures Scowcroft's cool analysis and prudent realism as no other scholar, reaching back to combine his early writings with a detailed analysis of Scowcroft's day-to-day management of the Cold War's end from his White House office. This brief and accessible biography makes a fine addition to the library of anyone seeking to understand American foreign policy during years of profound change and beyond. (Jeffrey A. Engel, Kruse '52 Founders Professor, Texas A&M University)

David Schmitz has written a concise, extremely engaging narrative on the important, albeit underappreciated and understudied, American foreign policymaker, Brent Scowcroft. Highly recommended reading for anyone interested in modern U.S. foreign policy. (Kyle Longley, Snell Family Dean's Distinguished Professor, Arizona State University)

In this deeply researched book, David Schmitz offers a rich portrait of an important but poorly understood policymaker who has deserved serious attention for a long time. But the book offers much more than biography. Through the lens of Brent Scowcroft's long career, Schmitz deftly analyzes the development of U.S. foreign policy since the Vietnam War. (Mark A. Lawrence, University of Texas at Austin; author of The Vietnam War: A Concise International History)

About the Author
David F. Schmitz is the Robert Allen Skotheim Chair of History at Whitman College and the author, most recently, of The Triumph of Internationalism: Franklin D. Roosevelt and a World in Crisis.

Review
This is scholarship in the best sense of the word: politically engaged, theoretically and empirically informed, and powerfully argued. Complex yet comprehensible. The readings―from Karl Marx to Erik Wright―have been carefully selected and arranged. The strength of this book is the incorporation of non-class based inequalities―specifically race and gender. The inclusion of readings from the 'race, class, and gender' paradigm makes this book the most inclusive and expansive anthology available. (Angela J. Hattery, George Mason University, author, Intimate Partner Violence)

This volume provides the sociology student with the essentials for a sophisticated theoretical understanding of social stratification in general, and class in particular. A great introduction to the classic and contemporary debates on class analysis for any student of inequality at any academic level. (Dalton Conley, New York University)

Even more now than when it first appeared, Social Class and Stratification is a welcome contribution to renewal of interest in class as the decisive force behind social inequalities. Teachers and students alike are once again in Rhonda Levine's debt for her edited collection of and introduction to the most current texts enlivening the debate over class power. (Charles Lemert, Andrus Professor of Sociology, Wesleyan University)

About the Author
Rhonda F. Levine is professor of sociology at Colgate University. She is the author of numerous books, including most recently, Enriching the Sociological Imagination: How Radical Sociology Changed the Discipline and Class, Networks, and Identity: Replanting Jewish Lives from Nazi Germany to Rural New York.

Jews in the Early Modern World, by Dean Phillip Bell

The study of early modern history has exploded in the last several decades. Many new historical sources have been identified and examined and a host of exciting studies, employing a wide range of innovative methodologies, have been produced. Scholars of Jewish history have begun to ask to what extent the early modern period had a Jewish dimension; they have also begun to reconsider the nature of traditional periodization of Jewish history. Jews in the Early Modern World attempts to synthesize some of this exciting new research and present it in a broader comparative and global perspective.

Jews in the Early Modern World argues that the years between 1400 and 1700 represented a discrete, cohesive and important period in Jewish history. Given the significant demographic shifts that began just before and ended just after this period, remarkable changes occurred in the history and experiences of Jews around the world. This volume begins with a broad context of Jewish experiences under medieval Christianity and Islam. It then turns to the early modern period, first providing an overview of Jewish demography and settlement. Next, the nature and structure of Jewish community and social structures in the early modern period are explored. In the final two chapters, this book presents a broad overview of Jewish religious and cultural life and Jewish relations with non-Jews throughout the early modern period.

Jews in the Early Modern World will serve as a useful resource for a wide range of courses in medieval and early modern history, Jewish history and world history. It includes a bibliography of English-language works cited, a wealth of suggestions for further reading, a glossary of terms, a timeline of key events, and numerous maps and images.

Review
Dean Phillip Bell provides at last a masterful and comprehensive overview of the era that was traditionally seen as an interim between the Middle Ages and the modern age of Jewish emancipation. Bell's most important innovation is to bring to an already distinguished tradition of Jewish history the fruits of a generation of scholarship on European, including Jewish, social history. Bell is critical where he must be, generous where he can be, and always thorough. This is a book for students, scholars, and all lovers of history. (Thomas A. Brady)

Bell offers a comprehensive synopsis of the whole range of Jewish life and experience in the early modern world, including Asia and the Americas. His wide reading, sane judgment, and good eye for the telling detail make it difficult to imagine a more successful introduction to the subject. (Constantin Fasolt)

The presentation of three hundred years of Jewish life over much of the surface of the world requires a balance of vivid examples and simplifying generalization. Bell, in a balanced voice, skillfully navigates between specifics and generalization to provide the fundamental features of the period. The book subdues the dizzying variety of phenomena by presenting them consistently in the categories of social, legal and economic history, rather than multiple, disconnected narratives from unrelated places. A timeline and glossary of terms, as well as illustrations, maps and tables assist readers who are unprepared in Jewish history. (Arthur Lesley)

The book's greatest accomplishment is bringing to our attention Jewish communities beyond Europe and the Ottoman Empire, and as such might open up new horizons for both students and teachers of the early modern period in general, or Jewish history in particular. (Shofar)

[This book] is not only a useful advanced textbook with a well-written narrative, but a splendid, high-level window into the theme useful for scholarly nonspecialists. . . . No comparable comprehensive book is available. This will be the standard introductory work on the theme for both early modern history and Jewish history and is an absolute must for every library. . . . Essential. All levels/libraries. (June 2008, Vol 45, No 10 Choice)

(June 2008, Vol 45, No 10 Choice)

This book can serve as a useful reference book that provides a clear and readable introduction to many topics in greater depth than an encyclopedia entry would do. The contents are clearly organized with an emphasis on providing basic data and information and less on presenting broader themes. The result is a clearly written guide that gives serious attention to the oft-neglected field of social history and not only to intellectual and political topics. The coverage of a wide range of communities is admirable. (Religious Studies Review)

This survey would be well suited to upper-level undergraduate classes on early modern history or courses on the history of Judaism. (Sixteenth Century Journal)

Dean Bell's Jews in the Early Modern World is intelligent and well written. Presenting the world of European Jewry from the early Middle Ages, through the rise of Islam, to the Age of Discovery in the light of Jewish religious practice, communal history, and social interactions, Bell's book is clear and accessible. One of the few books that looks both at the internal history of the Jews as well as the relationship of this history to the greater currents of the time, it is the ideal textbook for a Jewish studies class on modern Jewish history as well as a world history class dealing with the Jews in the early modern world. (Sander L. Gilman)

About the Author
Dean Phillip Bell is dean and professor of Jewish history at Spertus Institute of Jewish Studies in Chicago.
