Queers in Court: Gay Rights Law and Public Policy, by Susan Gluck Mezey

In Queers in Court, Susan Gluck Mezey examines the contemporary battle for gay and lesbian rights in the United States, tracing the evolution of issues from same sex marriage and privacy rights to military service and employment discrimination. By combining analyses of nearly three hundred cases from both federal and state courts with detailed explorations of the paths these issues have taken through legislative and executive bodies, she provides the most comprehensive analysis of queer rights in law and policy to date. Both scholars seeking a case study in minority rights and those looking for a primer in gay and lesbian politics will find Mezey's book of interest.

Review
Queers in Court is a meticulously researched survey of gay rights cases in state and federal courts over the last fifty years. Susan Gluck Mezey provides a comprehensive and richly detailed reference that is indispensable to understanding the interplay in American policymaking among judges, other legal and political elites, and public opinion. A truly enlightening book. (Daniel R. Pinello, author of Gay Rights and American Law and America?s Struggle for Same-Sex Marriage)

I learned a lot from reading Queers in Court, and expect to consult it many times. The book is must reading for students of gay and lesbian politics, but it will also be useful for anyone interested in social movements in the American courts. It provides that rare balance of a broad perspective that still includes all of the details specialists require. (Clyde Wilcox, professor of government, Georgetown University)

Queers in Court provides a nuanced historical survey that builds on the already-rich scholarly analysis of U.S. judicial rulings on sexual diversity. Susan Gluck Mezey's background in the exploration of rights litigation by other traditionally-marginalized groups allows her to draw parallels to other struggles without ignoring the distinctive features of queer claims. She also punctures some of the myths about American judicial “activism”―pointing to the recurrent restraint of federal courts and of most state courts. This is a healthy response to both overly-optimistic litigants and highly-selective critics who don't want to believe that there are any LGBT claims that have popular support. (David Rayside, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies, University of Toronto)

I view the book as a welcome addition to a library supporting gay rights research and believe it would be useful to a broader audience of other scholars, activists, and advocates. (Sharon Whitney Journal of Law & Politics)

A valuable resource for attorneys and scholars. (Booklist, September 28, 2009)

Queers in Court is an excellent overview of gay rights litigation in the U.S. It is thorough yet readable. It covers topics ranging from marriage to the military, it covers them over half a century of American history, it appreciates their nuances, and it places litigation in the context of public opinion. Queers in Court would be useful in a college or law school classroom and it would also be good company on a long plane flight. In one volume, it provides a solid, well-rounded, easily-digested introduction to all of gay law. (William Rubenstein, UCLA School of Law; Founding Director, Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law; and Former Director, ACLU Lesbian & Gay Rights Project)

Overall, the book makes a tremendous contribution to the study of judicial policymaking and to the study of sexuality and politics by chronicling, in great detail, the litigation surrounding important elements of LGBT family life....Mezey has created a tremendous resource of students and cholars of the courts and the study of sexuality. The author has taken great care in analyzing the reasoning of important cases....Overall, this book, particularly combined with Mezey*s QUEERS IN COURT, is an excellent addition to the growing scholarship on law, politics, and policies relating to sexual minorities and presents more evidence why this topic is particularly important for scholars of the judiciary. (The Law and Politics Book Review)

A Nation Under God?: The ACLU and Religion in American Politics (Claremont Institute Series on Statesmanship and Political Philosophy)By

A Nation Under God? raises the question of why the Aclu relentlessly attacks public expressions of mainstream religious faith. The answer, according to the book's argument, is that the work of the Aclu is informed by a larger political project-modern liberalism-to transform American government and society into an administrative-welfare state. Modern liberalism requires two decisive changes in American politics if it is to be successful: First, the government of limited powers mandated by the Constitution must become a government of unlimited powers and scope. Second, free, self-reliant, and independent citizens must become dependent on and understand themselves as subservient to government. The Aclu's drive to remove religion and morality from the public square advances both goals.

Limited, constitutional government rests on the idea that rights come from God; the power of government should be limited commensurate to the limited purpose of legitimate government: to protect our natural, God-given rights. With God removed from the public square, it becomes much easier politically to argue that government is the source of rights, and that every expansion of government power is tantamount to an expansion of rights.

Further, self-reliant citizens are not in need of and are unlikely to support large government welfare programs. But self-reliancy is largely a function of self-control and moral responsibility. Immoral and irresponsible citizens are incapable of providing for themselves and their families. Driving God and morality out of the public square serves to break down public morality, which in turn creates classes of citizens who are dependent on government assistance and regulation.

Through endless litigation against public expressions of religion and morality and its distorted interpretations of the Establishment and Free Exercise Clauses, the Aclu reveals its real agenda and its real allegiance, which is not to the Const

Ideas have consequences!
By Kevin M. Walker
Dr. Dan Palm, Chair of the History and Political Science Department at Azusa Pacific University, and Dr. Thomas Krannawitter from Hillsdale College in Michigan, write on the history of ideas behind the American Civil Liberties Union, the federal Courts, and the conflicting ways America has come to understand itself in the Twentieth Century. _A Nation Under God?_ argues that, from its founding in the 1900's, the ACLU's primarily motivation has been derived from modern progressivism - a philosophy that denies the possibility human nature for the sake of remaking society in terms of participatory evolution enforced by a powerful administrative state. Though often appearing in the guise of democracy and individual rights, progressivism rejected what the American Founders knew to be the basis of liberty, rooted in self-evident truths of human equality and eternal God-given rights, as stated in the Declaration of Independence. Far from establishing a "Christian nation" - as indeed many Right-wing factions claim - Palm and Krannawitter show how the Founders merely intended to provide a general basis for the cultivation of the virtues needed to maintain a constitutional democracy. The First Amendment's Establishment Clause only forbids a national denomination; it is of course coupled with the protection of Free Exercise. Yet the Supreme Court's reading of the First Amendment has brought these two clauses into collision, giving way to rulings that are no longer based on principle - thus giving the ACLU very arbitrary power in shaping national life. The authors call on us as citizens to realize the contingency of these judge-made laws, and rethink the character of our regime in light of the "laws of nature and nature's God."

ACLU -- A Zealot's View
By Joey Tranchina
The authors clearly do not understand that constant threat that Christianity has presented and continues to present to pluralistic society.

The speak as if conventional Christian dominance is an un-mixed blessing to a free society, which it clearly is not. In fact the crushing force of Christian ideology seeks to undermine the liberty of "others" repeatedly throughout history. The men who defined America knew the risks from a dominant religion -- after all they, or their immediate ancestors, had been victims of those risks -- it was in that spirit that they wrote a document to protect America from the religious wars that had driven them out of Europe.

"... the work of the ACLU is informed by a larger political project-modern liberalism-to transform American government and society into an administrative-welfare state." As if the state is stepping on church turf where they can serve people who submit to their version of truth. This is simply a basic disagreement over the existence of secular society predicated on a separation of church and state. We agree that our rights come from a higher power than the state; however that power is not the Christian religion.

I do not know anything of the other author but Thomas L. Krannawitter is far too erudite, to have written this work out of ignorance, this is a work of zeal -- religious zeal that has outstripped the colonial American history that he knows at least as well as I do.

Digital Freedom: How Much Can You Handle?, by Narain D. Batra

In Digital Freedom, N. D. Batra explores the tension between the boundlessness of the Internet and the boundaries of the marketplace, as well as the resulting impact on human expression, privacy, and social controls. Digital Freedom is an exploration of and meditation on the question: How much freedom does a person need? The question evokes Tolstoy's parable, "How much land does a man need?" Is freedom an acquired taste, much like one's love for symphony orchestra? Or, is it a necessity? After all, civilizations in the past have produced monumental works in all fields of human endeavor without as much obsession with individual freedom as we have today. Digital Freedom explores these issues―including surveillance, intellectual property, and copyright―from the perspective of an evolutionary, self-organizing social system. This system both creates and assimilates innovations and, in the process, undergoes reorganization and renewal.

The Myth of Individualism: How Social Forces Shape Our Lives, by Peter Callero

A second edition of this textbook is now available.

The Myth of Individualism offers a concise introduction to sociology and sociological thinking. This engaging supplemental text challenges the dominant belief that human behavior is the result of free choices made by autonomous actors. Drawing upon personal stories, historical events and sociological research, Callero shows how powerful social forces shape individual lives in subtle but compelling ways. Chapters examine the fundamental importance of cultural symbols, the pressures of group conformity, the influence of family, the impact of social class, the wide reach of global capitalism and the revolutionary potential of collective action. An organizing theme of the book is that humans are fundamentally social beings. Even parts of our life that we tend to think of as personal, such as identity, cognition, and emotion, are conditioned and structured by a web of intersecting social relationships. By acknowledging the limits of individual effort and control, we gain insight into our own lives and the lives of others. We also achieve a more informative outlook on enduring social problems and we begin the process of developing a sociological perspective.

Review
Peter Callero has written an engaging and entertaining introduction to sociological concepts and theories. It is accessible to undergraduate students including those in introductory sections. He has masterfully used everyday experiences of people to help explain often-difficult concepts such as structure and agency. I highly recommend this book, preferably as an excellent supplement to an introductory text. (Dean Braa, Western Oregon University)

In The Myth of Individualism, Callero does more than show why individualism is wrong. With the skill of a wise teacher, he leads readers into a progressively more complex understanding of the relationship between the individual and society. We emerge from the book with the ability to see more deeply into how we are simultaneously products of social life and its makers. (Michael Schwalbe, North Carolina State University)

Professor Callero, with head and heart, knows of what he writes, for he combines powerful narrative, praxis, and vision. One would expect no less from a scholar of society who has dedicated his life to seeking both truth and social justice. Such is a dialectic we all need to practice. And in the spirit of seeking truth and a better world, readers of this fine book can engage in a constructive debate with the author: is individualism a myth (in the pejorative sense) or is it an imaginative personal growth opportunity to go deep into one's spiritual and existential solitude (like Thoreau, for instance) and discover a profound social-and ecological-solidarity? Callero engages us if we decide to think with our whole beings as we read, in the best Socratic and Gandhian satyagraha traditions. (Frank Fromherz, Portland State University)

Peter Callero's The Myth of Individualism is the kind of introductory sociology text that is needed to reach the millennium generation of students flooding into our colleges and universities. Current freshmen do not accept something as 'true' just because someone in authority tells them to think that way; they want to understand 'why' things are the way that they are and believe that they can impact pressing social issues. Instead of the 'time-tested' approach of many intro Sociology textbooks―i.e. cataloging the social institutions and processes―Callero invites students to actively engage in sociological thinking by focusing on how our society's blind acceptance of logic of individualism masks individuals' understanding the relationship between our personal lives and the social forces that structure them. With examples taken from current events, The Myth of Individualism will inspire students to reject reductionist explanations for social outcomes (e.g. the rich are rich because they work harder than other people), and to utilize a sociological perspective in responding to the issues they encounter in everyday life in a complicated world. (Peter Collier, Portland State University)

Society makes the individual possible, not the other way around
By V.H. Amavilah
I am an economist by training, and in neoclassical economics the individual is the principal unit of analysis. Most neoclassical economists detest Marxism, but unfortunately, just like Marx, they seem to think that the economy, with the individual at it's center determines society. This book says that is wrong way of looking at the world; in fact society makes the individual and hence the economy. Many a problem humanity faces has origin in the overemphasis of individualism, and more recently in the global commercialization of individualism. Poignant, incisive, book! Even if the Introduction is all you end up reading, you'd still come out better informed. A highly commendable and recommended read.

Wow, Impressive.
By BillyOrs
I'm not much for classes like American Sociology, but this book actually has decent stories about factual experiences with deep looks into the minds of people among us. Not too shabby for something I didn't think I'd even get around to reading.

I'm currently using this book for the class 'Introduction to Sociology'. English is not my native language, and I find the book easy to read and understand. I bought mine used and it came in great state.

The Bare Bones Introduction to Integrated Marketing Communication, by Robyn Blakeman

Integrated marketing communication (IMC) focuses on communicators employing the correct message, being able to place it in the most appropriate media, and using the most advantageous communications approach. Advertising in today's economy crosses communication boundaries as well as societal and cultural norms, making accurate targeting, media selection, and consistency of message more critical than ever before. Marketing and advertising are no longer separate entities-they are the results of all parts working as a cohesive whole. Integrated marketing communicates using one tone-of-voice or message that is successfully delivered through multiple media and disciplines.

The Bare Bones Introduction to Integrated Marketing Communication is an in-depth yet concise discussion of the business and structure of integrated marketing communication. This brief, inexpensive text focuses exclusively on introductory issues concerning IMC as both a communication device and as a profession. Robyn Blakeman's step-by-step approach offers an extensive and exclusive look into how agencies work, the areas of specialization that make up IMC, how advertising affects our lives, and the diverse arsenal of media options that give IMC its visual/verbal voice. Both integrated marketing and varied media vehicles are dissected-one topic at a time-creating an invaluable reference tool that students, professors, and small business people alike will refer to time and again for information on the field of advertising/integrated marketing communication.

Inaccurate
By Phreddy Tran
This book is problematic in several ways. First, it has a fundamental misunderstanding of what integrated marketing communications (IMC) means. The author asserts that IMC entails customizing products and messages to individual consumers. That's not true. IMC is an approach to marketing that ensures that all elements of a marketing campaign share a consistent message, are mutually supportive, and serve a common goal; IMC campaigns include multiple forms of media, and may indeed involve mass advertising and mass-produced products.

The author also asserts that IMC differs from advertising - and is actually superior to it - when advertising is actually a possible element in an IMC campaign. Incidentally and ironically, even if it were true that IMC is about individualizing products and marketing (which it isn't), neither this book nor the methods used to market it would fall under her definition.

More problematic are several misstatements of facts. The author states that advertising is limited to print and broadcast. I worked in a major ad agency for several years, so I know that's far from the truth. She also states that the Better Business Bureau is a regulatory agency; rather, it is a private corporation incapable of establishing regulations.

Other statements by the author are unsubstantiated, such as viral marketing being "a great way to build brand awareness and to reach a large number of consumers." Since the author is a professor, she should have noted several studies that have found that viral marketing is incredibly difficult and unpredictable, and that it is actually a misnomer: "going viral" is a goal, not a method.

Finally, the first chapter is puzzlingly digressive, meandering from basic definitions to her opinions of how women are depicted in advertising, from a discussion on suicide themes in Super Bowl ads to a breakdown of how ad agencies are structured. What does any of that have to do with IMC?

Great book for an introduction to IMC
By Justin
I used this book in a graduate course on integrated marketing communications and persuasion in the marketplace. Phreddy Tran (the reviewer who gave this book one star) grossly misrepresented the contents of this book. He was mistaken with nearly all of his assertions, and I would suggest not using his review as a benchmark for determining whether to buy this book or not.

Blakeman does a great job of fleshing out how different media have different advantages, how it is necessary to carefully choose target markets, and why it is necessary to craft specific messages to create identification with a target. If you are new to marketing, this is a great place to start and could be used with other books that detail how to craft rhetorical messages.

I have no affiliation with the author and will receive no financial compensation nor award for posting this honest review. I am merely compelled by what I sense is an unfair review already on this book.

Why "she"?
By FlashyyFlyy
I would give this book five stars if the author did not refer to the practitioner as a female so much. I think it should be gender neutral.

Animating Difference studies the way race, ethnicity, sexuality, and gender are portrayed in recent animated films from 1990 through the present. Ranging from Aladdin to Toy Story to Up, these popular films are key media through which children (and adults) learn about the world and how to behave. While racial and gender stereotypes may not be as obvious as they may have been in films of decades past, they often continue to convey troubling messages and stereotypes in subtle and surprising ways.

Review
Animated films have increasingly become not only a major source of entertainment in American society but also a vast and complex mode of education. Animating Difference is one of the best books we have to enlighten, critique, and engage animated films through the intricate interplay of politics, education and entertainment. This is beautifully written and an immensely important book and should be read by everyone concerned about how we learn, watch, engage, and invest in our understanding of ourselves and others. (Henry Giroux, Pennsylvania State University, author of The Mouse That Roared)

Animating Difference stands out among analyses of animated films for children, expanding the focus beyond Disney to the entire genre of contemporary offerings. Highlighting the interplay of race, gender, and sexuality within a neocolonial context, the authors examine the powerful political ideologies and identity constructions that saturate these cultural texts. This important book compels readers to take seriously what is too often disregarded as simply entertainment, contributing to the insidious, normalizing power of these films as 'teaching machines' that perpetuate inequality. (Abby L. Ferber, director, The Matrix Center for the Advancement of Social Equity and Inclusion, University of Colorado)

This important book reflects the complexity of race, gender, and sexuality in American media in general and animated films that target children in particular. This crucially needed, timely, and accessible analysis illuminates the power animated films have to erase, annihilate, or emphasize difference to one of the most vulnerable of audiences―children. The book brings to eye and ear missing voices and faces we all need to see by unpacking them from their metaphorical use. It should be required reading in all media literacy courses. (Debra Merskin, University of Oregon)

This collection broadens a field that promises to grow more fruitful with time.... Recommended (CHOICE)
