Critics, Ratings, and Society: The Sociology of Reviews, by Grant Blank

How do we make choices in an information-saturated world? Prior studies often assume that the problem is coping with the volume of information. They rarely ask how people judge the validity of new information. But we are all forced to depend on secondary sources that no one has the time or resources to verify. In Critics, Ratings, and Society Grant Blank confronts these issues through an investigation of independent evaluations and reviews. Reviews are widespread; they rank products ranging from books and films to automobiles and computers. They are important not just because they influence success and failure of products, they also make or break reputations and careers, and often play a critical role in stratification, power, and status. Reviews are shaped by the interaction of media editors, product makers, and consumers into credible cultural objects. These are processed into two types of rating systems: connoisseurial reviews that depend on the unique skills and experience of a single reviewer, a connoisseur; and procedural reviews that are based on the results of tests, well-defined procedures that allow reviewers to rank groups of similar products. Both rating systems construct hierarchies of products. Blank develops a new theory explaining the circumstances where economic concerns like price are overshadowed by review-constructed hierarchies. When this happens, culture constructs markets. He argues that review-constructed hierarchies are widespread as a consequence of inherent structural characteristics of contemporary capitalism and, as a result, reviews will become more important in the future.

Review
In the most extensive treatment to date, Grant Blank uses a comparative study of reviews to analyze the social construction of expertise and the role of gatekeepers in our consumer-oriented society. As a result, we learn a great deal about the production and consumption of credibility and social status. This book is a must-read for sociologists of culture, economic sociologists, and anyone interested in understanding the cultural mediation of the market in advanced capitalist societies. I give it "two thumbs up." (Penny Edgell)

. . . a fascinating interdisciolinary study . . . (Day, Gary Time Magazine Education Supplement)

Much to his credit, Grant Blank shows reviews and ratings to be far more important and relevant than they may seem at first sight. . . . Blank's new book is not just a research monograph on critical rating systems. It also seeks to clarify the ways in which credible information is created and received and how reviews and ratings contribute to the creation and maintenance of status distinctions. (American Journal Of Sociology)

Grant Blank skillfully and convincingly situates reviews squarely in the nexus of key sociological concerns about status, choice, economics, and culture. Critics, Ratings, and Society: The Sociology of Reviews takes us inside the review process to reveal the social organization of the public evaluation of goods and experiences and, along the way, illuminates their significance in everyday life and usefulness in social research... This is a must read for economic and cultural sociologists and for anyone struggling to make sense of the bewildering variety of products and experiences confronting consumers on a daily basis. (Cook, Daniel Thomas)

About the Author
Grant Blank is assistant professor of sociology at American University in Washington DC. His special interests are in the sociology of culture, the influence of computers and electronic networks, and analysis of qualitative and quantitative data.

Negotiating Under Fire: Preserving Peace Talks in the Face of Terror Attacks, by Matthew Levitt

The impact of severe security crises on peace negotiations represents one of the most significant facets of modern conflict resolution theory to remain under-researched. It also stands out as the factor most likely to derail inherently sensitive negotiations. Negotiating Under Fire explores how such crises between two nations impact diplomatic initiatives between those countries. How do the negotiators' willingness and ability to continue influence the outcome? Do the levels of legitimacy, trust, and confidence within and between the parties change in such strained negotiations?

Through a detailed analysis of three critical moments in the Oslo peace process―the Baruch Goldstein Hebron massacre of 1994, the Nachshon Wachsman kidnapping and execution of 1994, and the nine-day string of suicide bus bombings carried out in Israel in March of 1996―the author concludes that insurgents or those hostile to peace talks can and do undermine negotiations.

Review
Negotiating Under Fire is a most useful guide for policymakers and diplomats dealing with violence during negotiating processes. Inevitably, opponents of negotiations will resort to violence and intimidation in order to stop the diplomatic process, and these actions are usually treated sui generis and haphazardly by governments. By analyzing major disruptions of the Israeli-Arab negotiations and drawing some lessons on how to cope with and overcome such attempts to stop negotiations, Matthew Levitt has done a real service in the cause of successful diplomacy. (Daniel C. Kurtzer, Princeton University)

As Israel's Chief Negotiator with Syria in the mid 1990's and as Israel's Ambassador to Washington during the same period, I was fortunate to be able to play a role in the effort to resolve the Arab-Israeli conflict or parts of it and unfortunate in witnessing the manner in which terrorist acts committed by Arab and Israeli fanatics and cool headed radicals was one of the most important reasons for the collapse of this effort. Matthew Levitt's book written with a sharp pen of an expert analyst sheds new light on and offers fresh insights into the interplay between the effort to resolve the conflict and the successful terrorist challenges which undermined it. It is mandatory reading for anyone interested in the history of Arab-Israeli relations or, more broadly, in conflict resolution theory and practice. (Itamar Rabinovich, Tel Aviv University)

The book is extensively documented. . . .Recommended. (CHOICE, May 2009)

An interesting addition to literature on crisis management. (Middle East Journal, Spring 2009)

Matthew Levitt's book reminds us of the dangers to peace negotiations created by extremist violence and the need to anticipate these crises and ensure that diplomacy is not derailed. More importantly, Levitt proposes useful steps that policy makers on all sides can deploy to prepare for crises and defuse them, allowing the quest for peace to prevail. (Ann L. Estin, president, American Task Force on Palestine)

About the Author
Dr. Matthew Levitt teaches at Johns Hopkins University and is a senior fellow and director of the Stein Program on Counterterrorism and Intelligence at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy. From 2005 to 2007, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Intelligence and Analysis at the US Department of the Treasury. Previously, he served as an FBI counterterrorism analyst.

Top Secret: When Our Government Keeps Us in the Dark, by Geoffrey R. Stone

Since September 11, 2001, the United States has investigated and prosecuted public employees, journalists, and the press for the dissemination of classified information relating to the national security. What is the cause of the recent tension between the government and the press? Perhaps the media are pressing more aggressively to pierce the government's shield of secrecy. Perhaps the government is pressing more aggressively to expand its shield of secrecy. Perhaps both factors are at work. Top Secret explores not why this is happening, but whether the measures taken and suggested by the executive branch to prevent and punish the public disclosure of classified information are consistent with the First Amendment.

This book, the first in the Free Expression in America series, addresses four critical issues: a public employee's right to disclose classified information to a journalist, the government's right to punish the press for publishing classified information, the government's right to punish a journalist for soliciting such information, and a journalist's right to keep his sources anonymous.

Review
This superb volume provides an exceptionally lucid account of the legal landscape of government secrecy. Geoffrey Stone helps readers to think through the conundrums of national security law in pursuit of a sensible secrecy policy that can be reconciled with the democracy it is supposed to protect. (Steven Aftergood, director of the Project on Government Secrecy, Federation of American Scientists)

In a rigorous and insightful analysis, Geoffrey Stone's Top Secret explores one of the fundamental and most difficult constitutional tensions of a self-governing society: the conflict between the need of citizens to know what their government is up to and the need of government sometimes to maintain the secrecy of its actions. (Nadine Strossen, president, American Civil Liberties Union and professor of law, New York Law School)

The subject, government secrecy, is crucial to our freedom. Geoffrey Stone has tackled all its complexities with admirable clarity and force. He has given us an essential guide to resisting silence and suppression. (Anthony Lewis, former New York Times columnist)

This a great book of cartography as well as legal reasoning. Geoffrey Stone has charted the elusive lines between national security and the public's right to know in a straightforward, thought-provoking way that will illuminate the path for judges, journalists and policy-makers for years to come. (Tony Mauro, Supreme Court correspondent, American Lawyer Media)

Throughout the ages, great thinkers such as Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, Aquinas,Descartes, Spinoza, Kant, Nietzsche, and many others have had incredibly useful things to say about overcoming the strife of everyday living and attaining happiness. Unfortunately contemporary approaches to psychology have made only limited use of this guidance. At last, here is an uplifting psychology that systematically applies the wisdom of the ages to attaining life pregnant with insight, meaning, value, and purpose. Guided by the vision of great minds, this book shows you how you can still feel secure and hopeful in a precarious, uncertain universe; face evil with life-affirming courage; build self-esteem, respect for others, and global reverence; become your own person; take control of you're emotions and behavior; strengthen your willpower; confront moral problems creatively; build rapport and solidarity with others; and hone your practical decision-making skills. Unlike classical approaches to rational psychology that only scratch the surface of what's deeply wrong in your life, The New Rational Therapy gets to the core and offers you penetrating, philosophical antidotes for transcending your malaise, and for attaining an enduring, profound happiness.

Review
The New Rational Therapy is an intelligent and clearly written book. It is enjoyable to read, and it gently induces the reader to self-knowledge and self-improvement. The light of reason that shines through this new therapy can indeed be the right medication for persons suffering from mental and emotional disorders. Professional care givers can find new inspiration in the “Eternal Logos” reshaped as a Logic-Based talking cure (LBT) and use its wisdom in their own working settings. The New Rational Therapy presents the ripened fruition of Dr. Elliot Cohen's many years of research and clinical practice; it will be the remaining crown of excellence and distinction on his labor. (Shlomit C. Schuster Ph.D., author of Philosophy Practice: An Alternative to Counseling and Psychotherapy)

In his New Rational Therapy, Elliot Cohen identifies eleven common and destructive patterns of reasoning that, left unchecked, can substantially impair personal happiness. He provides many useful antidotes to counteract the poisonous effects of these cardinal fallacies. (Samuel Zinaich, Jr., president, American Society for Philosophy, Counseling, and Psychotherapy)

An amazingly profound book. (Albert Ellis PhD, Albert Ellis Institute for Rational Emotive Therapy, New York City)

Cohen does a masterful job of melding concepts of positive psychology into his own theories of rational therapy. (Sara Dettinger Martino PsycCRITIQUES)

This is a genuinely useful book that deserves a wide readership. It could help a lot of people become a great deal happier. (Kevin M. Purday Metapsychology Online Reviews)

Clearly written and well argued, Cohen sets out eleven philosophical prescriptions that really can improve our everyday lives. If more philosophers followed Cohen's lead in their work, there will be many more (employed) philosophers and even more satisfied students of philosophy. (James Sterba, University of Notre Dame)

From the Author
This book is the first systematic philosophical counseling approach to use philosophical wisdom to treat some of the most destructive fallacies endemic to humankind. For example, many people suffer from metaphysical insecurity as a result of making perfectionistic demands on a universe inherently imperfect. Standard psychological approaches are not equipped to deal with this metaphysical malais because the philosophical insights needed to overcome it are outside the purview of classical psychological training. In this book, I have identified eleven cardinal fallacies that tend to create the lion share of self-inflicted, needless human suffering; and I have provided many potent antidotes to these fallacies gleaned from the history of philosophy. The book shows how living philosophically according to these lights can help you better cope with the stresses of ordinary living, and, what is more, aspire to a life pregnant with deeper meaning, insight, value, and purpose.

An Introduction to the Causes of War: Patterns of Interstate Conflict from World War I to Iraq, by Greg Cashman, Leonard C. Robinson

This pioneering book explains the causes of war through a sustained combination of theoretical insights and detailed case studies. Using the major theories of international conflict as a guide to examine contemporary examples of the outbreak of war, Cashman and Robinson find that while all wars have multiple causes, these factors typically combine in identifiable "dangerous patterns." In assessing and comparing these patterns, this is the only undergraduate text to systematically join detailed case studies to the theories and empirical research carried out by political scientists on the causes of war. Through the examples of World War I, World War II in the Pacific, the Six-Day War, the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the Iran-Iraq War, and the Iraq War of 2003, the authors uncover the complex multilevel processes by which disputes between countries evolve into bloody conflicts.

They emphasize the importance of escalation through conflict spirals between rival countries. They also point out the links between war and territorial disputes, the underappreciated role of the domestic political environment (especially internal political instability), and the importance of crucial misperceptions by national leaders. The authors identify specific patterns in which disputes escalate: the "classic rivalry spiral," the "domestic instability spiral," and "complex spirals." They also find that wars between states of unequal power follow a starkly different pattern than wars between relative equals. Ideal for a range of courses in international relations, this focused text clearly explains theory and applies it to concrete examples in a way that allows students to fully understand the origins of war.

Review
Provide[s] undergraduates with a clear, systematic application of the 'causes of war' literature to seven wars of the 20th century. These are an interesting and diverse set of cases including WW I, WW II in the Pacific, the 1967 Arab-Israeli conflict, the 1971 Indo-Pakistan War, the Iran-Iraq War, and the 2003 Iraq War. . . . Recommended. (Rutland, Peter Choice)

Excellent scholarship, references, and analysis. The authors' multilevel patterns bring coherence to the innumerable case studies and lessons learned that dominate the field. (William H. Mott, IV)

A tour de force that will displace Stoessinger’s Why Nations Go to War as the dominant case-studies text in the field. This is an insightful, trenchant analysis of specific wars that takes into account the vast amount of scientific work on the subject. Both scholars and students will learn much from this book. (John A. Vasquez and Marie T. Henehan)

Bought for class, kept it.

I read this for "causes of war" with Cashman as my instructor. I took both of the authors various Political Science classes at Salisbury and they know their stuff. I kept the book instead of selling it back because it's such a good reference on conflict in the past 100 years.

good book
By Sinanju
This book offers analysis of several different wars on different levels of causal factors. i read this for my IA class and found it to be a good book. The writing is good and the analysis is very interesting. However, the letters in the book are just way too small and makes it difficult to read, thats why i am giving it a 4 star.

Martin Heidegger: Paths Taken, Paths Opened (20th Century Political Thinkers), by Gregory Bruce Smith

Since the publication of Victor Farias's Heidegger and Nazism, the discussion about the political significance of Martin Heidegger's thinking has been distorted. Because of his association with the Third Reich, some have dismissed Heidegger out of hand while others have sought to explain away certain connections. What is often lost in the writing of critics and advocates alike is an honest assessment of Heidegger as a political thinker and a frank interest in understanding his work. Martin Heidegger: Paths Taken, Paths Opened takes Heidegger's philosophy on its own terms and explores the pivotal significance of his phenomenology for political theory. Heidegger opposed, at the deepest level, everything that informs the global, technological civilization that seems to be the fate of humanity. Yet even in the liberal and technologically oriented West we cannot proceed without a confrontation with his thought. In this timely addition to the 20th Century Political Thinkers series, Gregory Bruce Smith shows Heidegger's thought to be an inescapable challenge to our current ethical habits and contemporary political institutions. In this path-breaking work, Smith establishes the centrality of Heidegger's thought, even to those who would claim to be his most ardent critics. Smith also addresses difficult interpretative questions regarding the relationship of Heidegger's early and later work and the status of political ideas with respect to Heidegger's phenomenological project. A work of broad interpretative breadth and keen political insight, Martin Heidegger: Paths Taken, Paths Opened establishes the undeniable importance of Heidegger's thought for the future of the tradition of political philosophy.

Heidegger's Postmodernism Rightly Understood
By Tom
This is an excellent and accurate overview of Heidegger's philosophy. Smith shows Heidegger rightly to be a kind of modern Aristotelian, or at least mainly concerned with reviving what remains relevant in Aristotle, like his phenomenological and human-teleological analyses of political life in the Ethics and Politics, against the currents of modern, mechanistic thought since Descartes. Smith also makes strong arguments for understanding Heidegger against the popular influence stemming from appropriation via Derrida (like that of Nietzsche via Deleuze) into the "anarchistic postmodernist" left. Smith situates Heidegger 'local' thinking rightly in the midst of intellectual efforts to evade any burgeoning 'universal homogeneous state' or 'end of history' as predicted by Kojève. Smith helps explain why life in a universal technological state would mean 'the disappearance of Being'.

Demystifying the European Union: The Enduring Logic of Regional Integration, by Roy H. Ginsberg

Written by one of the premier scholars on the European Union and hailed as the best undergraduate text on the subject, this book has been thoroughly revised and updated to include the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. Clear and comprehensive, it "demystifies" one of the world's most important and least understood institutions. Roy H. Ginsberg contextualizes European integration through the foundation blocks of history, law, economics, and politics. He then breaks the Eu down into its components so that they can be understood individually and in relation to the whole. Reconstructing the Eu as a single polity, Ginsberg evaluates the Eu's domestic and foreign policies and their effects on Europeans and non-Europeans alike. The author thus challenges students to see what the European Union truly represents: a unique experiment in regional cooperation and a remarkable model of conflict resolution for the world's troubled regions.

soul crushingly boring
By James Egan
If you want to learn about the EU without your eyes beginning to bleed from inhuman boredom, turn to other material. It is unfathomable how a man could spend so many pages producing such utterly unreadable writing. I would rather re-read my car's owner manual than try to cipher through another of Ginsberg's half-coherent paragraphs.

Boring
By CocoRosieFan
This was one of three required textbooks for an upper-division Political Science course and by far my least favorite. It wasn't coherent and sometimes repetitive with too many summaries within a chapter. At the end of each chapter, there is a list of key words and questions; however, by the time I finished a chapter, I often forgot what I should be able to answer and had to re-read certain passages for clarification. Ginsberg certainly needed an editor. The information is there (somewhere), but not in a reader friendly format.

If this is required for a class, opt to share it with someone (so you're not completely disappointed by wasting money on this book).

Appropriate for academics and EU Enthusiasts
By Andy
Ginsberg gives a good detailed introduction about the origins of ECSC to the rise of the EU. After that, however, the acronyms, individuals, and institutions become overbearing. It is written as if the reader has a prior schema and excellent grasp on the EU and may not be suitable for someone with little to no knowledge of EU's economies, political systems, and history. Unfortunately, I fell under the latter and was unable to follow the book coherently.

Why States Matter: An Introduction to State Politics, by Gary Moncrief, Peverill Squire

When it comes to voting, taxes, environmental regulations, social services, education, criminal justice, political parties, property rights, gun control, marriage and a whole host of other modern American issues, the state in which a citizen resides makes a difference. The idea that states matter is the fundamental concept explored in this book - by accomplished scholars and authors Gary Moncrief and Peverill Squire - and has been an essential truth embedded within America's governing philosophy since the Colonial Era. Considerably less attention is paid to the gritty but essential political battles fought at the level of America’s states than to the endless and infamous turmoil inside the beltway, but the political decisions made by those in state-level offices are of tremendous importance to the lives of people whose states they govern. This book introduces students to the very tangible and constantly evolving implications, limitations, and foundations of America’s state political institutions, and accessibly explains the ways that the political powers of the states manifest themselves in the cultures, economies, and lives of everyday Americans, and always will.

Review
Why States Matter by Gary Moncrief and Peverill Squire not only answers the question of why, but even more important, why we should care. Today, with many Americans’ knowledge of government limited to news clips and sound bites about the breakdown of the federal government, a full understanding of how state governments influence citizens’ daily life, as well as the country’s big picture, is woefully lacking. Why States Matter provides a solid framework for why states are an essential part of the nation’s federal system. Moncrief and Squire explain in a straightforward fashion why and how states differ, how innovative policies that originated at the state level have rippled through the entire country, and why all this is important. . . . The book is a great tool for the average citizen wanting to understand state government or the new lawmaker seeking to articulate better exactly why states matter. (State Legislatures Magazine)

Moncrief and Squire offer a different approach from the standard textbook on state politics. Rather than provide a generic overview of institutions and processes, they focus on the central role that states play in shaping public policy in America today. In so doing, the book provides a superb text for getting undergraduates to understand how state governments work, how these governments have changed over time, and why state politics matters. (Richard Clucas, Portland State University)

Moncrief and Squire provide a detailed look at state policymaking in the American federal system. They explore not only the historical roots of the relationship between the states and federal government but also the current issues facing the states today. They offer a detailed and accessible account of the important issues facing the states and clearly show why the states matter. Given the recent Supreme Court rulings in areas from voting rights to same-sex marriage, Why States Matter gives a timely critique of the American federal system that reemphasizes the importance of state policymaking and politics in America today. (Jonathan Winburn, University of Mississippi)

(Karl Kurtz, Director, Trust for Representative Democracy, National Conference of State Legislatures)

Many believe that all policies flow from Washington, DC, yet individual states adopt different and distinctive approaches to solving local problems. States, not the federal government, determine many policy issues such as education, health care, marriage, abortion, concealed weapons, environmental standards, voting, and political party related matters. Moncrief and Squire discuss key roles states play and identify policy areas that are changing or potentially will change in the future. The book guides the reader outside the organization of the legislature and into broader areas of federalism, policy making, American institutional development, electoral systems, and fiscal policy. Readers of this work will have the tools necessary to begin analyzing the central role that states play in shaping public policy. In addition, they will be prepared to assess the actual influence states reserve over their citizens. The authors' well-documented analysis persuasively illustrates that, beyond recent controversial headlines, states are more capable today of governing themselves. Students and general readers alike will gain insight from this balanced, objective work on why states matter. Summing Up: Recommended. General readers, undergraduate students, and professionals. Working with the underlying premise that America's founding principles continue to be vital in the modern era, Erler, Marini, and West take a conservative look at immigration, one of today's most pressing political issues. Review
The economic, social, and cultural concerns about massive illegal immigration from Mexico have long been discussed. But rarely have we examined the massive influx in historical and legal terms of citizenship―how did the founders and their successors deal with problems of being an American, and what are the effects of massive noncompliance with the laws of the United States? Edward J. Erler, John Marini, and Thomas G. West are to be congratulated for their sober exploration of the racial and class considerations that seem to prevent us from enforcing the very laws that we have passed. Wine Wars: The Curse of the Blue Nun, the Miracle of Two Buck Chuck, and the Revenge of the Terroirists, by Mike Veseth

Writing with wit and verve, Mike Veseth (a.k.a. the Wine Economist) tells the compelling story of the war between the market trends that are redrawing the world wine map and the terroirists who resist them. Wine and the wine business are at a critical crossroad today, transformed by three powerful forces. Veseth begins with the first force, globalization, which is shifting the center of the wine world as global wine markets provide enthusiasts with a rich but overwhelming array of choices. Two Buck Chuck, the second force, symbolizes the rise of branded products like the famous Charles Shaw wines sold in Trader Joe's stores. Branded corporate wines simplify the worldwide wine market and give buyers the confidence they need to make choices, but they also threaten to dumb down wine, sacrificing terroir to achieve marketable McWine reliability. Will globalization and Two Buck Chuck destroy the essence of wine? Perhaps, but not without a fight, Veseth argues. He counts on "the revenge of the terroirists" to save wine's soul. But it won't be easy as wine expands to exotic new markets such as China and the very idea of terroir is attacked by both critics and global climate change. Veseth has "grape expectations" that globalization, Two Buck Chuck, and the revenge of the terroirists will uncork a favorable future for wine in an engaging tour-de-force that will appeal to all lovers of wine, whether it be boxed, bagged, or bottled.

Review
Fascinating. . . . Political economist and blogger Veseth examines the wine world and analyzes its historical and present-day factors from the small to the large along with their potential impact on wine's future. He structures his overall argument into three major 'flights,' or selection of wines for tasting, the first being the effects of globalization. Looking at expansionist politics and economics, he examines retailing policies in domestic markets such as England, Germany, and the U.S. Veseth turns to the wine drinking market and its evolution, and the ever-expanding influence of wine criticism on both in the face of the rapid changes in bulk production. The last part of his analysis looks at terroir and the potential effect of climate change. . . . Veseth's analysis is provocative. (Publishers Weekly)

Seeking to view the global wine trade through an economist's lens, Veseth (international political economy, Univ. of Puget Sound; Globaloney: Unraveling the Myths of Globalization) takes readers through an engaging examination of international wine markets and the impact of consumers. Veseth carefully explains the construction of stores' wine walls, including the psychological, physiological, and economic impact of the placement of wines on them (think of reaching up for the 'top shelf'). Also included is an analysis and breakdown of the wine consumer market into distinctive groups, such as 'Satisfied Sippers,' 'Image Seekers,' and 'Wine Enthusiasts.' Veseth's basic premise is that the modern, globalized market now pits mass-made bargain wines against stuffy, epicurean standbys, creating limitless choices for certain types of consumers and turning the traditional model for what drives industry sales on its head. VERDICT This book will interest not only oenophiles but also general readers following the global economy or market analysis. (Library Journal)

This is a serious book about the future of the wine industry that does not take itself too seriously. The writing of wine experts has long been lampooned for its pretension and incomprehensibility to the layperson. Veseth (economics, Univ. of Puget Sound) avoids these traps, although readers disdaining puns may wish he had not. He has produced an accessible, insightful book that shows he obviously has both intellectual understanding of and emotional attachment to the topic. His main intent is to address the potential benefits and dangers of various developments in the wine industry. Has globalization meant more choices at affordable prices or the homogenization of the choices facing consumers? How will climate change impact the traditional wine centers in Europe and the newly established regions in the New World? Will competition divide the market into a broad base of cheap wine in cardboard boxes for the masses and traditional wines costing thousands of dollars per bottle for a few elites? Veseth maintains his optimism, even if the prevailing mood is more dismal, and his optimism should be infectious for both wine lovers and those simply looking for an informative, entertaining book about the economics of a particular market. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All readership levels. (CHOICE)

Wine is, first and foremost, a business, though the nuts and bolts of economic survival rarely make for good reading. Enter Mike Veseth, who brings the mind of a trained academic and the writing talent of a veteran blogger to this fascinating exploration of the macroeconomic forces shaping the global wine industry. He knows his subject inside and out, and after reading Wine Wars you will have a deeper understanding of the major trends that are shaping not only the business of wine but the actual flavors of the wines you drink. (Paul Gregutt, columnist, blogger, and author of Washington Wines & Wineries: The Essential Guide)

If we are what we drink, Mike Veseth knows the reasons have as much to do with market forces as mouthfeel. He is as at home with a winery's annual report as a vintner's tasting notes, and this delightfully unstuffy tour of the modern wine industry will fascinate anyone who wants to understand how business works today. (Sasha Issenberg, author of The Sushi Economy: Globalization and the Making of a Modern Delicacy)

In the fine tradition of insightful and accessible bestsellers like Freakonomics and The World Is Flat, Wine Wars provides a valuable service to wine enthusiasts everywhere. By combining a clear-eyed economist's point of view with globalization expertise, Veseth offers an insightful and accessible survey that will give readers an understanding not only of what's in the glass, but also how it got there, and what the future may hold as the borders of the global wine village draw closer. This is an important work and a fun read, too. (Jeff Lefevere, writer, Goodgrape.com)

Mike Veseth’s Wine Wars is broader than simply a book on the economics of wine, but it definitely looks at the trends that shaped the global wine industry as it has become today from an economist’s perspective. . . . These stories are fascinating and informative. . . . Anyone with an intellectual curiosity as to how all the factors came together to produce the wines available to us today will find much in Wine Wars to satisfy that curiosity. (New York Journal of Books)

Written by a wine economics expert who lives in Washington, this book provides fascinating history on the globalization of the wine industry—and why that is not necessarily a bad thing. Veseth convincingly makes arguments for why inexpensive wine is not a problem and why the wine world is unlikely to collapse on itself. All in all, it is a comprehensive, well-written and glass-half-full book. Frankly, I learned a great deal about wine, how it is made and the history of many wine regions. I learned a great deal about the Chinese market, as well as the problems going on in France and Australia. This was a hugely entertaining and valuable read. (Goodreads)

Of all the wine blogs in the wide, wide blogosphere, one that I look forward to reading the most is Mike Veseth’s Wine Economist. There’s nothing else quite like it. . . . As of this month, Professor Veseth’s thoughts are available in long form. He’s just published a book entitled Wine Wars in which he tackles economic forces as diverse as Two Buck Chuck (he’s a fan), the oft-debated descent of 'real' wine into 'McWine,' and much else. It’s more business book than guide to wine—but students of wine as well as the economy will find much to enlighten and even entertain, thanks to Professor Veseth’s readable style. (The Wall Street Journal)

A clear-eyed and expansive take on globalism and big business in wine. It's a welcome addition to the wine book shelf. . . . For many writers, the wine business is handled as a dry, academic subject, but in the hands of Veseth (like Perdue before him) it's interesting and zippy reading (bordering on a fun vacation read) and an incredibly helpful primer for not only the newly wine interested to help them understand the wine wall at their grocery store, but also savvy veterans who have, perhaps, focused their learning in specific regions, not looking at the wine world in totality and from a business perspective. (Good Grape)

Wine Wars is no dry textbook. Rather, it's a well-written story about what is—and isn't—happening to the world of wine. Every wine lover will find the stories and history of what is in their glass fascinating. (The News Tribune)

Should wine be a beverage for everyone, or should it be an artisanally nurtured nectar, whose pleasures are available only to those with sophisticated noses and the deepest pockets? Veseth documents how these two contradictory approaches dictate what wines appear on shop shelves. The apotheosis of wine-for-all is the famous 'Two Buck Chuck,' a wine made ubiquitous in America by a German-owned chain of stores. At the same time that a mass market for wine has burgeoned, newly knowledgeable consumers have become increasingly aware of 'terroir,' the unique characteristics that come from wine grapes grown in specific soils and carefully bottled and aged to bring out their most distinctive and subtle qualities. Nevertheless, outsize profits lure vintners to make their products attractive to consumers of average taste. The appearance of new markets in China and elsewhere challenges small winemakers to expand or disappear entirely. (Booklist)

Veseth takes a sideways look when discussing The Curse of the Blue Nun, The Miracle of Two Buck Chuck, and the Revenge of the Terroirists (the sub-title of the book and the three sections in which is it divided). The first two parts help understand what’s different about shopping for wine at Trader Joe’s and Costco, and that was enough to keep my attention. Veseth is an economist and that’s one of the reasons I subscribe to his blog feed. . . . I wish there were more books like this focused on beer. (Appellation Beer)

Mike Veseth has applied his economist’s perspective, his understanding of global affairs, his clear understanding of the business of wine and his crystal clear writing style to assemble one of the best wine books of 2011. . . . Veseth's analysis is thorough, sound and matter-of-fact. This is a well and tightly woven story, well-told by a creative thinker. . . . A fascinating read, this book has pace, humor and insight. (The Winesights Reader)

Veseth expertly presents the economic forces that are shaping wine consumption, and he frets about the beverage's future, particularly with the pushback seen by 'terroirists'—people who are obsessive about a wine's 'terroir,' that its identity reflect its unique growing conditions and place. The battle for wine's future isn't only about money, he posits, but also about power struggles between vintners, retailers, and governments. . . . In his artful and sometimes amusing analysis of the 'wars' taking place within the wine world as a result of all these skirmishes. Veseth untangles a complicated issue and provides a cogent summary of an industry's challenges. For anyone who appreciates a good glass of wine—or who's been disappointed by a bad one, despite a high sticker price—Veseth's insights will prove tantalizing. (Foreword Reviews)

Economist Mike Veseth is an authority on the global wine market and here presents his view of the three forces shaping the wine world today. . . . Ultimately, his view is optimistic. . . . Any consumer keen to understand how the wine world works—and may develop—will find this a highly readable, comprehensive account. (Decanter)

Mike Veseth’s latest book gives an economist’s perspective on the globalization of wine. The conflict he writes about is that between the globalists and the terroirists; between mass-produced and handcrafted wines; between the large multinational corporation and the small, family winery; between the wines that critics love and those that consumers purchase. . . . Fortunately, he doesn’t write like an economist. Anyone familiar with his blog, The Wine Economist, already knows that he writes about wine markets in a way that non-economists can easily understand. Reading the book, I kept thinking about Freakonomics, another popular book [that] uses the principles of economics to explore and explain a variety of social phenomena in a way that anyone can understand. Mike Veseth does the same thing but focused on the wine industry. (I-Winereview Blog)

Bottom line . . . this is an informative, well-written, and interesting book that I would recommend to any wine lover interested in what a wine economist has to say. (Wine Berserkers)

This book is a lively, globe-trotting treatise. To sum up using wine reviewers' parlance: Wine Wars opens with a witty bouquet and a note of didacticism. On the palate it is well-balanced and juicy, and it has an optimistic finish that lingers. Cheers! (Kitsap Sun)

I don't even like wine, and I found Veseth's book lively and engaging. (The Seattle Times)

It's said that wine is bottled poetry, but Mike Veseth knows it is also big business. Veseth, a professor of international political economy at the University of Puget Sound in Washington, has pulled together his love of wine and economic sensibilities to write a book that is an interesting, accessible read. Veseth is clearly enthusiastic about both wine and economics, and as a self-proclaimed 'wine economist' he explains the intersection of these interests with verve. It's a quick tour of the field, and for the purposes of his discussion, he sticks to big names and describes the successes of Yellow Tail, Charles Shaw, Blue Nun, Costco, Tesco and even Olive Garden with admiration. As an economist he sees the benefits of globalization, including more choices for consumers and a stabilizing effect for an industry that reacts slowly to changes in supply and demand. (Wine Spectator)

Globalization, corporatization, and terroir-ization of the fermented grape juice industry are all uncovered in this unveiling of the dark business side of winemaking by the market-minded yet engaging writer behind WineEconomist.com. . . . [A] gift your wino will love. (Santa Barbara Independent)

Spritely written, easy to read and full of information about the history and growth of the global wine industry. . . . While dozens of fine new wineries start up in the U.S. each week and hundreds of wines can now be found on the wine wall of every large grocery store, Veseth worries that most wine drinkers never get past the few McWine makers that rule the industry. . . . He pins his hopes on winemakers he calls terroirists—those who care about the idea that wine should embody the unique tastes, aromas and characters of the place where it was made and the winemakers themselves. He believes many of those new wine drinkers will eventually graduate from lower priced bulk wines to higher priced hand-crafted local wines. Hopefully enough to support a rich and diverse market of wines for every occasion. (The Wenatchee World)

Money makes the wine go round, and Wine Wars helps to make sense of it all. . . . Not to spoil the end of the story, but Veseth remains hopeful in the end about the mix of wine dynamics. Despite the seemingly crushing power of global price-cutting and homogenization, he thinks distinctive, even quirky wines have a bright future—in other words, something for everybody. . . . Along the way, his overview of economic forces that have shaped wine's career take the reader on a number of historical excursions and international visits. The treatment is breezy and easygoing. . . . Nonetheless, Veseth does get to some fundamental economic realities behind the surface of wine, and even readers who pay attention to the ups and down of the wine market will learn something. This kind of information may not change the way your next glass of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc tastes, but it surely will help you understand how it got there. And that, to go back to wine's many wondrous properties, gets us back to the lure of enlightenment. (Vinography: A Wine Blog)

There’s never a dull moment in its 225 pages. . . . Certainly if you’re a wine drinker—'oenophile' makes me visualize a trilobite-looking creature—this book provides a valuable education about what you think you’re buying, and who you’re buying it from. Veseth pulls back the curtain on an ongoing 'bargain wine revolution,' talking about the provenance of Trader Joe’s beloved Two Buck Chuck, and how conglomerates without house brands have bought their way into an assortment of once-local brands. (SunBreak)

From the get-go you just don't want to put this book down, slaloming as it does informatively through economic and social history, the wine industry, the future, and observations setting the scene for the great battle between the market forces redrawing the world wine map and, as Veseth puts it, 'the terroirists who are trying to stop them.' Veseth . . . writes authoritatively and clearly. . . . This is undoubtedly a fascinating read that will be a treat to most tastes and is one of the books of the year. (Paul O'Doherty, JancisRobinson.com)

Wine Wars nicely captures the essence of [the] factors affecting the evolution of wine and the agenda for wine economics. The running theme throughout this book is a search for the future of wine. Writing in a brisk and non-technical style, Veseth uses this theme to focus on the competing forces vying for wine’s future. . . . The interrelationships that bring wine to the world are truly international in nature today, and will only become more so in the future. Veseth infuses Wine Wars with stories about these connections and conflicts, and in the process we learn much about the business aspects of wine—in addition to enjoying the narratives that inform the economics. . . . Anyone with an interest in wine and wine economics will enjoy reading Wine Wars. (Journal of Wine Economics)

Jubilant. [Mike Veseth] possesses the art of expression: 'Wine Wall,' 'DaVino Code,' 'McWine Conspiracy' and, without doubt one of the best, 'Château Cash Flow.' He is swimming in a palette of colors, which he delights in dampening: Gallo’s famous Red Bicyclette, Yellow Tail, Blue Nun, his favorite White Zinfandel. . . . [His] work involves a veritable global framework and gives one the chance to visit Australia, [or] New Zealand, for example, in great depth. . . . The reality, which Veseth is right to underline, is that behind all the discourse, all the lyrical flights of fancy about the fabulous year, the involvement of generations of vintners and producers, there is always the fundamental question of money, of revenue and of power. (Revue d'économie régionale et urbaine)

Wine Wars provides some terrific insights into how and why the wine you see in your local grocery store got there, and why you buy (or don’t) the wine you do. (The News Tribune)

In his insightful and amusing new book, Wine Wars, author Veseth explains the complicated world of wine, analyzing its past and predicting its future. . . . This rich volume with peppery overtones is the perfect match for anyone wanting to know more about the business of wine. Recommended. (Meg Trauner, Ford Library, Fuqua School of Business, Duke University)

Wine Wars by Mike Veseth is a fantastic, witty read that tells the story of wine market trends, like Two-Buck Chuck and Costco. Also, the book discusses globalization and how this affects wine enthusiasts with a ‘rich but overwhelming array of choices.’ (Nooga.com)

[A] superb book about the forces shaping the modern wine industry. . . . [R]eplete with interesting tidbits about economic theory, including the way that protectionist policies have led to the production of plonk, while free markets have forced producers to raise the quality of the wine they sell. These are matters that Mr. Veseth devotes considerable time to, and that he explains in clear and elegant prose. He is an economist, to be sure, but he is a writer of considerable skill and his book is not just educational, but engaging and entertaining as well. It’s not just a great book about the wine industry, but a great business book, period. (Project Sunlight―A Winemaker's Education)

If a glass of wine followed by a discussion of economics gets your blood boiling, Mike Veseth’s Wine Wars is the book for you. Writing with wit and verve, Mike Veseth, the wine economist, tells the compelling story of the war between the market trends that are redrawing the world wine map and the terroirists who resist them. . . . Veseth has 'grape expectations' that globalization, Two Buck Chuck, and the revenge of the terroirists will uncork a favorable future for wine in an engaging tour-de-force. (Great Wine News)

Mike Veseth write about globalization and its effects on the wine industry, citing the popularity of cheap, branded products (Two Buck Chuck, most notably) and the subsequent backlash from “terroirists”- those who believe that a wine should reflect its local soil, culture and climate […] He takes a look at China’s emerging wine business (its output recently surpassed Australia’s) and samples a few glasses from two of its vintners, one the country’s oldest in existence, the other a relative newcomer. (Forbes)

Veseth then recounts his own experience on a trip to Friuli in northeastern Italy, a place brutalized by the two world wars, where they have planted a special vineyard of peace using grapes varieties from all around the world. Interestingly, Veseth found that the wine produced from this vineyard, Vino Della Pace (Wine of Peace) wasn’t 'especially distinctive' on the palate, but was memorable for its 'optimistic symbolism.' . . . A few sentences later, 'We longed for the taste of peace when we didn’t have it. Now that we do, we find it a little bland. So we seek out terroir, even if it threatens to divide us once again.' It’s an astoundingly simple way to say something so profound and Veseth nails it perfectly. . . . Maybe there is more to economics than just money. (Wine Country BC)

In Wine Wars, Veseth discusses the different forces that shape the world of wine today. If you want to talk about and understand wine markets, this book is essential. (Yahoo Lifestyle)

Wine Wars takes us through the global wine business landscape highlighting many issues at play. He [Veseth] sees wine as a broad church, the future undetermined as the different forces battle it out. (Harpers Wine & Spirit)

Wine Wars is a fascinating contemporary insight into the predominant market forces of globalization. . . .But Wine Wars is as much a social history of (and insight into) wine consumerism as it is an economic treatise. . . .Put simply, Wine Wars is one of the better, more informative and entertaining wine books I have read for ages. Thankfully, Mike Veseth avoids the miasma of pompous, self-congratulatory drivel that often swirls around wine criticism. So those in the business of wine who have not read it already, should do so now. . . .If Wine Wars was a wine I would rate it at 98/100— great balance and finesse, good body and grip, fine texture and length and a lingering aftertaste that leaves you craving for more. (Wine Business)

Wine enthusiasts will enjoy it, although the focus is on mass wines, culture, and retailing
By Sitting in Seattle
I am a wine enthusiast (see below) who eagerly awaited Wine Wars and read it quickly. It's an easy-to-read book with numerous interesting observations, anecdotes, facts, and speculations about wine economics and the operation of the global wine industry. For that reason, I think most wine lovers will find it to be at least moderately interesting, and will be rewarded by insight into the industry.

Among the interesting pieces are discussion of wine customer segmentation, dissection of the local supermarket wine section, discussion of the Trader Joe's and Costco effects on wine, and the interweaving of wine merchandising history with speculations about the future development of the industry. And there are various interesting facts about the wine markup at Costco, the relationship between Two Buck Chuck and German wine habits, and various brands and historical episodes.

The economic parts are journalistic, meaning that the author does not expound any economic theory, and much less any specific models, equations, or data. It's a readable narrative such as might appear in magazine articles, not at all an academic work. That's a good thing for a general reader, I suppose.

However, the book has a number of limitations that lead it to deliver less than it could. It is primarily about mass-marketed wines (both cheap and expensive) with almost no discussion of the role of boutique wineries. I would have enjoyed extended discussion of boutique phenomena such as tasting rooms, wine holidays, and wine clubs. The author's focus on economic relevance no doubt eliminated such wineries as insignificant players in the global business, although I would argue that these phenomena are both relevant to branding efforts (e.g., wine tourism in Napa) and of interest to the people likely to purchase his book.

That highlights a second problem: it is unclear exactly who the reader should be. One might suppose that -- using the Constellation Brands segmentation it presents -- the audience would be wine enthusiasts. Who else would be so interested in the topic of wine economics? Yet if that is the case, he misses the mark: too much time is spent explaining things that don't need explaining to that audience (such as "Carignan is the sixth most-planted red grape variety ... Have you heard of it?"). And as I noted above, topics likely to be of intense interest to them are mostly ignored. For instance, I would love to see an economic treatment of questions such as: how do tasting rooms play into the picture? why do ultra-premium wineries succeed or fail? should one "invest" in wine? was there a real "Sideways" effect? do enthusiasts really have different taste?

A final issue is that the book is occasionally repetitive, repeating the same description of the supermarket "wine wall" and similar things in multiple chapters. This reflects the fact that it has been assembled in part from the author's blog, but closer editing would be welcome.

In summary: if you're a wine lover, it's worth the price, is easy to read, and will lead you to think more about the global wine business, its mass brands, and how the mass wine market operates. However, it won't give you much insight into the ultra-premium world that may be of greatest interest to enthusiasts.

(Kindle note: I would have preferred to read this on my Kindle, but it was available later than the print edition. If you have a Kindle, you might want to wait for that version scheduled for July. The book is a straight-through, easy read, with no need to flip back and forth or take notes ... perfect for a Kindle.)

Entertaining and informative
By Judith A. Dickinson
While selecting a wine will continue to be confusing with all the choices available, I feel much more informed and and educated after reading "Wine Wars". It's not often that a book is both entertaining and informative and wish I'd had it to read before visiting California's wine country, because I would have known better which wineries to visit and what to look for. It's also a great starting point for becoming an even smarter wine consumer learning how wines are priced, labeled and critiqued.
