This new edition of Manfred Steger's award-winning book explores the three principal ideologies of our time: the dominant "market globalism" based on a neoliberal vision of the world as a single marketplace, the "justice globalism" developed over the last decade by a transnational coalition of global civil society forces, and the "jihadist globalism" of radical Islamists seeking to galvanize their global community of believers into violent action.
Market globalism has responded to these challengers by turning into "imperial globalism"—a political belief system that marries the capitalist language of the 1990s with the security concerns of our post-9/11 world. Steger, one of the world's leading scholars on these subjects, explores globalization's central questions: What, exactly, are the core claims of these conflicting globalisms? How does the imperial globalism of the 2000s differ from the market globalism of the 1990s? How has justice globalism managed to mature into a coherent ideology? What are the most likely future trajectories of this great ideological struggle of the twenty-first century? Written with impressive historical and theoretical breadth, this groundbreaking work is essential reading for all those concerned with the key questions that our shrinking world must face.

Review
PRAISE FOR EARLIER EDITIONSThis is the best short book on the phenomenon of globalization. Clear, concise, and well-organized.--Stephen Manning
PRAISE FOR EARLIER EDITIONSThis excellent study surveys the concepts and politics of pro- and anti-globalist alliances, and examines very carefully the 'Battle of Seattle.' Looking ahead to crucial struggles over the meaning of 'globalization, ' Steger makes a good case that 'globalism' is ethically unsustainable. This is timely reading on an important subject.--Carver, Terrell
PRAISE FOR EARLIER EDITIONSManfred Steger presents a sharp critique of the ideology of globalism as a new legitimation of transnational capitalism while recognizing the benefits of a global society and culture. Showing the limitations of academic conceptions of globalization, Steger criticizes both apologists and one-sided left and right critics as he develops his own conception.--Kellner, Douglas
PRAISE FOR EARLIER EDITIONSUndoubtedly the best of the scholarly surveys of the theory and practices of market globalism that has appeared in recent years. . . . Of equal value to students of globalization and those engaged in its practices whether in classrooms, boardrooms, or the streets.--Barber, Benjamin R.

Filled with Disinformation
By elise popp
I cannot express my hatred for this book more emphatically. I found it to be highly presumptuous, incredibly skewed in the facts presented, and in some contexts, highly misinformed if not offering disinformation. Where Steger’s facts and quotes were not slanted or taken out of context, his points were ambiguous, redundant, and offered little original insight. A waste of 200 pages. You would be better off reading the original material he quotes from a drawing your own conclusions.
