Excellent Primer for understanding the ethos of the U.S. Catholic Church

I was introduced to Carey in a survey course on the Catholic Church in the United States at my seminary. Carey begins with the Catholic "mission" in the New World alongside the dominant Protestant understandings of the faith in the colonies and follows it through the Second Vatican Council. He also charts the dissent and protest within the Church during the turbulent decades following. Anyone wanting to grasp the unique history of the Catholic Church in the American environment (as compared with the European), will find this book a good starting point. His writing style is "distilled," yet comprehensive. He doesn't overwhelm with detail so the reader can get the "big picture," but he flavors his writing throughout with names, dates and places that give essential details to key movements and trends in American Catholic history.

Poor organization of ideas

There's plenty of great information on here and Warren presents it with a good tone, but his organization is awful.

If you absolutely have to buy this book, here's a few tips:
The first "section" of each chapter is a mash up of everything else that will be presented. Ignore these sections or just skim through them.
Also, the titling on the subsections can be confusing or poorly worded. Ignore them.
Keep a small notebook handy so you can organize all the important information yourself.

About the Author
David L. Brunsma is associate professor of sociology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He was the program chair and organizer for the 2006 Annual Meetings of the Southern Sociological Society held in New Orleans shortly after Hurricane Katrina. David Overfelt is a graduate of sociology at the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is a member of Sociologists Without Borders and focuses on the merging of academia and activism in his work as as a radical public sociologist. J. Steven Picou is professor of sociology and chair in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Social Work at the University of South Alabama in Mobile. He has published numerous articles on environmental sociology, disasters, the sociology of risks, and applied sociology, and is undertaking several projects on the health risks associated with the long-term industrial and social impacts of Hurricane Katrina.

When the Badax County Tigers left the small town of Viroqua, Wisconsin, in the autumn of 1861, they had little notion of what military service would demand of them.

The Badax Tigers were as common a company in as common a regiment as may be found in the annals of the Civil War. They marched, camped, and fought their way through four years of service with their fair share of battle honors and few blemishes to mar their record. They rallied at Shiloh, stood firm at Corinth, laid siege to Vicksburg, rescued Chattanooga, and saved Allatoona. In short, they represented the backbone of the Federal volunteer army from 1861 to 1865. When the original Tigers returned to Viroqua at the close of the war, they numbered only fourteen men out of the more than 100 recruits who had been mustered into service.

Good history with some minor inaccuracies

I felt that I struck gold when I found this book. I have a close tie with Company C of the 18th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. My G(3) Grandfather served in this unit, as well as his son, my G(2) uncle. They enlisted as father/son. Because of this, I have more real knowledge of the two Stokes who served with Company C. T.J. Davis got it right in his letters. Nanzig missed it a little. The picture of John M. Stokes, the fifer, is my G(3) Grandfather. He did not die while serving, as incorrectly stated under his picture. John Stokes, his son, died in St. Louis of disease. The author misses these points. The capsule at the end of the book that gives what happened to each member of this Company is incorrect as well.

Aside from the above, I enjoyed this book. It provides a nice concise history of Company C. T.J. Davis' letters did annoy me a little. It showed T.J. as a character that I began to dislike more and more. Starting from T.J. criticizing his wife's writing style; to what seems to be loan sharking; and finally to deserting his unit, I just couldn't view him as a brave fighting hero.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who has a desire to learn Civil War history.

Students will be drawn to a fascinating cast of characters, as muleteers, artisans, hacienda peons, convict laborers, dockworkers, priests, and the rural police force (rurales) join railroad regulars in this rich social history. New empirical evidence, some drawn from two private collections, elaborates on the huge informal economy that supported railroad development. Railroad officials sought to gain access to local resources such as land, water, construction materials, labor, customer patronage, and political favors. Residents, in turn, maneuvered to maximize their gains from the wages, contracts, free passes, surplus materials, and services (including piped water) controlled by the railroad. Those areas of Mexico suffering poverty and isolation attracted public investment and infrastructure. Van Hoy provides a valuable corrective to the history of Mexico's railroad industry. About the Author
Robert Evert Cimera is an associate professor at Kent State University in the Department of Special Education. He has worked extensively with autistic children and their families and since being diagnosed with A.D.H.D. as a child, Robert has earned a Ph.D. and published seven books.

It's about time!

I'm a college student getting my degree in elementary education. In addition I have a four year-old son who is high-functioning autistic. I decided to write my term paper for one of my classes on autism and came across this book in the library. What a refreshing book to read after the mounds and mounds of books I had to go through that put such a negative spin on autism. This book gave wonderful insight and information on all aspects of autism in a relaxed and realistic way. It was almost as if I was sitting down with the author talking about autism over coffee. The book isn't written as methodically as many of the other books I have read on this subject, yet still gave very good information.
With the almost pandemic rate of children being diagnosed with autism, parents need books like these to say 'hey, so your child has autism, that isn't necessarily a bad thing'. This book doesn't dwell too much in the past scrutinizing over WHY your child has autism, it looks at the NOW and the FUTURE and says what can we do to turn this into something positive. What can we do for the child NOW.

I would say this is my favorite book on Autism. It's written in such a positive manner! It's a book that really helps you come to grips with everything that goes along with Autism. It covers everything from diagnosis, medical, children-teens, adults, wills & trusts. It's great for anyone new to Autism. I love it!

As a teacher of students with autism, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning more and family and friends of someone with autism. Dr. Cimera writes in a conversational tone that is friendly and while informative, not overly technical. The book does not focus on the negative, but accentuates the positive.
