CHOICE PRAISE FOR PREVIOUS EDITIONS Despite the importance of international negotiation there are remarkably few texts that can unconditionally be recommended for international relations courses. Professors Starkey, Boyer, and Wilkenfeld are to be congratulated for producing an authoritative introduction to international negotiation that is at once clear, interesting, innovative, and enjoyable. The authors have produced an excellent, user-friendly text for students that brilliantly succeeds in getting across key features of the negotiating process. They cover the major concepts, approaches, and theories in the field in a concise and highly readable way. Their synthesis of case study and theoretical analysis is just what is called for. What particularly impressed me was the ability of the authors to explain the context and mechanics of international negotiation while at the same time placing negotiation exactly where it should be-at the heart of international relations. As well as enthusiastically endorsing the adoption of this fine study as an introduction to international negotiation, I would also wish to recommend it most highly as an essential component of general courses on diplomacy and foreign policy. -- Raymond Cohen, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, author of Negotiating Across Cultures

Kindle edition formatting is NOT ideal
By Alyssa Michelle
While I appreciate the low price and the convenience, I have a big problem with this edition. No matter what I do, I can't get page numbers to show up! It just has "locations"--which in *no way* correlate to the page numbers. I can't even tell where one chapter leaves off and another begins! I'm sure this has advantages, but when Amazon was formatting this into an e-book, didn't they consider the fact that as a textbook, students might be assigned specific pages to read? Amazon please fix this in the future; this isn't the first e-book I've bought from you with this problem, and I'm running out of patience. For anyone with the same problem, try searching for this book in google books. In that you can at least see the table of contents (something else Amazon left out).

Ethics for Disaster (Studies in Social, Political, and Legal Philosophy), by Naomi Zack

Ethics for Disaster addresses the moral aspects of hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, plane crashes, Avian Flu pandemics, and other disasters. Naomi Zack explores how these catastrophes illuminate the existing inequalities in society. By employing the moral systems of utilitarianism, deontology, and virtue ethics to analyze the consequences of recent natural disasters, Zack reveals the special plight of the poor, disabled, and infirm when tragedy strikes. Zack explores the political foundations of social contract theory and dignitarianism and invites readers to rethink the distinction between risk in normal times and risk in disaster. Using both real life and fictional examples, Zack forcefully argues for the preservation of normal moral principles in times of national crisis and emergency, stressing the moral obligation of both individuals and government in preparing for and responding to disaster..

Review
Naomi Zack's Ethics for Disaster is, in fact, about a lot more than the ethics of disasters-she also covers important parts of the political philosophy of disasters and their management. Her dedication to the situation of the disadvantaged in disasters and her meticulous analysis of it is admirable. Zack's focus is on disaster preparation, a subject sometimes overlooked in this discussion. The book is very accessible and includes insightful comments on lessons to be learned from literature and popular culture. This is highly commendable in a book whose subject matter will be of interest to many readers outside the academic community. (Per Sandin, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm)

This book tackles the hard questions about our collective responsibility to plan for and respond to disasters. Zack brings insights from contemporary moral and political philosophy to address the difficult question of who counts when disaster strikes. This book will introduce humanities scholars to the large literature in disaster studies, and it will introduce experts on disaster relief to some philosophical tools that are helpful for analyzing the moral dilemmas and political chaos that disasters create. (Laurie Shrage, Florida International University)

Naomi Zack‘s Ethics for Disaster is a welcomed and needed examination of the ethical issues related to the impact of disasters on human life. In clear and lucid language she explores the need to rethink how we understand, address, plan for, and respond to disasters. This book should be required reading for anyone concerned with ethical and human dimensions of disaster planning and response. (Bill E. Lawson, Distinguished Professor of Philosophy, University of Memphis)

This welcome work significantly fills a vacuum in disaster studies and emergency management literature. Taking a no-nonsense approach using real-life and fictional examples, Zack highlights the moral and ethical obligations that citizens and governments have in preparing for and responding to the results and aftermath of disasters. . . . This very thought-provoking book may serve as a template to those charged with the responsibility of planning for, responding to, and minimizing the deleterious effect of disasters. It should be required reading for anyone concerned with the ethical and human aspects of disaster planning and emergency management. Scholars, practitioners, and the general public will greatly benefit from reading it. Highly recommended. (CHOICE, December 2009)

This is a remarkable book. . . . Naomi Zack's writing blends rigor, clarity, and relevance. Ethics for Disaster can productively be used in public policy, homeland security, and emergency management classrooms across the country. I recommend this book to anyone concerned with what it means to do the right thing before, during, and after a disaster. (Christopher Bellavita, director of academic programs at the Center for Homeland Defense and Security)

Naomi Zack has written an intriguing treatise that challenges conventional thinking about planning for disaster response. Using the language of human rights analysis, she questions why our response to disaster continues to be so problematic. (International Journal Of Intelligence Ethics)

Ethics for Disaster is a very valuable work in that it begins the project of thinking about an ethics for disaster. It also lends itself to use as a teaching text, at least with some additional materials, for an
upper-division course on ethics and contemporary issues...[This book contains] some interesting aspects of a common topic searching for an overall architectonic structure to guide the reader to some conclusions. (Journal of Value Inquiry)

About the Author
Naomi Zack is professor of philosophy at the University of Oregon. She has authored several books, including Inclusive Feminism and Thinking About Race.

This is the best book available about ethics, homeland security and emergency management
By CB
This accessible book is written to be read by students and practitioners. It is clear, comprehensive, and provocative. The book identifies issues and perspectives that should be discussed before a disaster strikes. It is not a how-to manual. It is wide ranging introduction to ethical foundations and perspectives.

Part 1 covers the basics of ethical thinking in the western world. Part 2 addresses the political and policy factors that affect homeland security/emergency management ethics in practice.

You can read representative selections from the book courtesy of Amazon's "Look Inside" feature.

I've used this book in class a number of times. It sparks engaging discussions and provides conceptual tools to inform those discussions.

Excellent book if you're interested in ethical perspectives
By Dr. Trish
If you want to have a deeper understanding of disaster as a practice discipline and some of the philosophical/ethical elements surrounding it, get this book. As a colleague of mine said, good ethics drives good practice. If you want to be the best practitioner, you need to have an idea of the ethics behind what you're doing. This isn't something I'm just sitting behind a desk theorizing about-- studying ethics has made me a better, more reflective practitioner.

A wonderful overview of the beginnings of the European integration project and the twentieth-century geo-strategy that made 'an ever closer union' emerge as a political goal. The Prodigal Judge (The Best Sellers of 1911), by Vaughan Kester

"[...]last of his name and race, old General Quintard, was dead in the great house his father had built almost a century before and the thin acres of the Barony, where he had made his last stand against age and poverty, were to claim him, now that he had given up the struggle in their midst. The two or three old slaves about the place, stricken with a sense of the futility of the fight their master had made, mourned for him and for themselves, but of his own blood and class none was present. Shy dwellers from the pine woods, lanky jeans-clad men and sunbonneted women, who were gathering for the burial of the famous man of their neighborhood, grouped themselves about the lawn which had long since sunk to the uses of a pasture lot. Singly or by twos and threes they stole up the steps and across the wide porch to the open door. On the right of the long hall another door stood open, and who wished could enter the drawing-room, with its splendid green and gold paper, and the wonderful fireplace with the Dutch tiles that graphically depicted the story of Jonah and the whale. Here the general lay in state. The slaves had dressed their old master in the uniform he had worn as a colonel of the continental line, but the thin shoulders of the wasted figure no longer filled the buff and blue coat. The high-bred face, once proud and masterful no doubt, as became the face of a Quintard, spoke of more than age and poverty—it was infinitely sorrowful. Yet there was something harsh and unforgiving in the lines death had fixed there, which might have been taken as the visible impress of that mystery, the bitterness of which had misshaped the dead man's nature; but the resolute lips had closed for ever on their secret, and the broken spirit had gone perhaps to learn how poor a thing its[...]".

An Insider's View of Sexual Science since Kinsey, by Ira L. Reiss

In a personal, nontechnical, and informal style, eminent researcher Ira L. Reiss discusses the many situations he has encountered during the past fifty years while researching sexuality and developing useful and innovative explanations of its different aspects. Most of the problems that were present during those years are still confronting those who work on human sexuality. Reiss discusses his experiences in sexual science in areas such as premarital sex, the sexual revolution, Masters and Johnson's therapy, feminism and sexuality, crises in sexual organizations, responses to HIV/AIDS, child and adolescent sexuality, radical social constructionism, biology versus sexual science, international trends, and the movement toward a Ph.D. in sexual science. The insights and solutions Reiss proposes are of great importance to all those who are interested in the sexual issues that affect people today.

Review
Ira Reiss is one of the pioneers of modern sex research and one of the few survivors who has personally known almost all the leaders of the field since the time of Kinsey. He has also been a major contributor to sex research itself. In terms of human sexuality Reiss has been there and done that, and his book is a must-read for newcomers in the field. It will also prove invaluable to those who are veterans in the field because of his personal knowledge of the changes that have occurred. I highly recommend it. (Vern L. Bullough, author of Science in the Bedroom: A History of Sex Research)

Ira Reiss has been in the forefront of sex research for most of the time since Kinsey. Even now, well into his retirement, he continues an energetic involvement with a strong commitment to strengthen the field of sexual science. It is great to have his experiences as a sex researcher and his perspectives on the field documented in this book. It should be required reading for anyone aspiring to be a sex researcher. (John Bancroft, Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction)

Ira Reiss is the ideal social scientist to speak of the past half century of sex research, for he bridged the span from pioneers such as Kinsey to the complex situation of the present and is familiar with virtually every important development―many of which were his. He has been a major figure in sex research, having enriched it with his cross-cultural approach, his skill in developing sex research organizations, his unusual commonsense views, and his dislike of fads and bureaucracy. (Paul Gebhard, Indiana University, former director of the Kinsey Institute)

It is rare that any scientist explores and reviews his life work in print. In a highly personal and easily readable conversational tone, deservedly well-respected sociologist Ira Reiss does just that. For the budding scientist, as for the casual reader, this review of thought and action over a professional career provides insight into aspects of the developing field of sexology as they appeared to this involved critical observer. Of particular value for the scholastically minded is how Reiss challenged assumptions and demanded proof of otherwise unquestioned beliefs to strengthen his theory formation. Not only recall memory but regular journal entries, names, and dates are used to flush out the early years in which sociology joined other disciplines like medicine, biology, psychology and public health in forming and enhancing the field we today recognize as sexology. Reiss explores all this and adds a good touch of ethical, philosophical, and political considerations in this lasting contribution. (Milton Diamond, University of Hawaii, Department of Anatomy and Reproductive Biology)

A professional and scientific history, personal memoir, and up-to-the-minute analysis of the field of sexual science by one of the truly great sexologists. Brilliant, wide-ranging, highly original, and completely engaging. I couldn't put it down! The most important book about sexual science in memory. (Frank Farley, Former President, American Psychological Association)

In this capstone volume to Ira Reiss' life's work, he writes an engaging, candid, and informed account of his struggles to advance sexual science in the face of strong and, at times, intransigent opposition. People who sympathize with his vision will find many interesting stories and insights with which to carry the work forward. (Edward O. Laumann, University of Chicago)

This informative and entertaining book is a must read for those who will now contribute to and shape the sexual science landscape. Essential. (CHOICE)

Reiss allows readers a glimpse into the personal and professional experiences that shaped his own views on sexuality….This is a thought-provoking volume, Reiss effectively demonstrates the important contributions that he and other sexual scholars made to national and international policies such as that concerning HIV/AIDS, highlighting the significance of academic research and writing that extends beyond the university. Anyone interested in the history of medicine, science , or the academy as well as sexual studies would fin much of use in this book. (Journal of the History of Sexuality, September 2010)

About the Author
Ira L. Reiss is professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota. He has received several awards for his work and research on human sexuality, including the Kinsey Award from the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality, of which he is past president.

Fight for the Bay: Why a Dark Green Environmental Awakening is Needed to Save the Chesapeake Bay, by Howard R. Ernst

In this important new book on the declining health of one of America's leading environmental treasures, Howard Ernst reveals a Chesapeake bay that has become functionally dead. He argues that the Chesapeake Bay succumbed to a 'light green' environmental movement that has too often adopted a philosophy of compromise over confrontation and that has fueling a 'political dead zone' where political leaders posture but fail to make the hard decisions needed to achieve real improvement in the Bay's health. While blunt in his evaluation of past and present failures to restore the Bay, Ernst believes that there is still time to turn the restoration effort around and sets out new 'dark green' strategies to do so. In the concluding chapter, five long-time bay activists provide first-person accounts of their battles and hopes for the future. Hailed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as 'a must read for anyone concerned about environmental protection,' this challenging book provides a wake-up call for everyone concerned about the future of the Chesapeake Bay and other ecological treasures through out America.

In 2003, Hunt, a political science professor at the U.S. Naval Academy, issued a wakeup call with his polemic Chesapeake Bay Blues, arguing that "politics as usual" was leading to "continued environmental degradation." Six years later, the situation is worse; Chesapeake Bay is "functionally dead," and the problem has gone global. Distinguishing between the more confrontational approach of the "Dark Greens" and the moral arguments of the "Light Greens," Ernst argues that differences in the movement have contributed to the ability of opposing "Cornucopians" to push an agenda of pure economic self-interest. The largest environmental interest group in the Bay region, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, refuses to engage in electoral politics while the Bay's biggest polluters, such as the poultry industry, use their money to get pro-industry candidates into office: "the Perdue family alone spent more in one recent election... than the combined spending of all environmental groups across the three key Bay states during the same period of time." Still, there are many individuals and organizations doing important work, and Ernst chronicles their struggles in detail. A passionate call to action from a longtime activist (Ernst is currently in his 80s), this read will shock and inspire a range of concerned citizens, from homeowners to journalists to lawmakers.

From Booklist
Ernst is devoted to elucidating both obvious and subtle aspects of the catastrophic transformation of the Chesapeake Bay from a vast, fecund “ecological treasure” into a dead zone, first in Chesapeake Bay Blues (2003), and now in this eye-opening inquiry into the failure to restore the Bay, in spite of the spawning of 600-plus environmental groups and the allocation of huge amounts of money. Taking measure of the gap between the scientific understanding of what needs to be done and the lack of political will to make it happen, Ernst decries the demise of mainstream environmental journalism, the public’s habit of “wishful thinking,” and the government’s tactics of evasion. He also characterizes three key groups. The Dark Greens believe that the “carrying capacity of nature” should determine land and water use and that strong regulations are necessary. The Light Greens believe we should try to be good stewards, and the Cornucopians take a strict economy-first approach. Ernst’s incisive and thought-provoking study pinpoints the sticking points holding up environmental progress and offers a do’s-and-don’ts primer to effective action. --Donna Seaman

Review
Ernst is devoted to elucidating both obvious and subtle aspects of the catastrophic transformation of the Chesapeake Bay from a vast, fecund 'ecological treasure' into a dead zone, first in Chesapeake Bay Blues (2003), and now in this eye-opening inquiry into the failure to restore the Bay, in spite of the spawning of 600-plus environmental groups and the allocation of huge amounts of money. . . . Ernst's incisive and thought-provoking study pinpoints the sticking points holding up environmental progress and offers a do's-and-don'ts primer to effective action. (Booklist, December 2009)

Howard Ernst has done it again, creating a stunning mosaic of politics, policy, and the environment. Nobody writes about environmental politics with more clarity or understanding than Ernst..... (Dr. Larry Sabato, University of Virginia)

Like Paul Revere, Howard Ernst calls us to arms―to rescue our birthright to a clean environment. Our great waterways are 'functionally dead,' he warns, maimed by 'raw greed, political hypocrisy' and well-intentioned but weak-kneed environmentalists. It is time, Ernst declares, to mount a 'dark green' revolution against our 'political dead zone' and reclaim our birthright. And he points the way. (Hedrick Smith, Pulitzer Prize and Emmy award-winning journalist, correspondent, and producer of Poisoned Waters)

I read with special interest the chapter on environmental journalism, which describes with accuracy and wisdom the dangerous decline of reporting in this area. It's clearly a major reason why progress is so halting and slow when it happens at all. (Bill McKibben, Founder of 350.org, author of Deep Economy)

Ernst is back with a new book, called Fight for the Bay , striking out in some new directions with sharpening important insights that have turned out to be true. . . . Ernst plows new ground in tackling a fact many Americans haven't yet realized: The decline of newspaper investigative reporting will affect their lives, their well-being, and their environment. (Bay Weekly, October 22-28, 2009)

Professor Ernst's new concept―the political dead zone―will change the way people think about environmental politics. This book is a must-read for anyone concerned with environmental protection. (Robert F. Kennedy Jr., author of Crimes Against Nature)

Howard Ernst has done it again, creating a stunning mosaic of politics, policy, and the environment. Nobody writes about environmental politics with more clarity or understanding than Ernst. (Dr. Larry Sabato, University of Virginia)

There are many individuals and organizations doing important work, and Ernst chronicles their struggles in detail. A passionate call to action from a longtime activist, this read will shock and inspire a range of concerned citizens, from homeowners to journalists to lawmakers. (Publishers Weekly, Web Exclusive Review, November 2009)

This short and straightforward book calls for regulatory, legislative and enforcement action to protect the Chesapeake . . . Ernst's discussion of the different mind-sets of what he calls cornucopians, light-green and dark-green environmentalists, is provocative and insightful . . . Fight for the Bay is a compelling book that may one day be viewed as the Chesapeake's counterpart to Silent Spring . (The Capital, December 2, 2009)

Ernst's Fight for the Bay is an incisive look at an important ecosystem and what communities everywhere can learn from it. Researchers, environmentalists, and political activists of all kinds may find it an enlightening read. (The Futurist, March 2010)

He is best known for his work in the area of environmental politics and is considered a leading authority on the Chesapeake Bay restoration program. (The Evening Sun, March 18, 2010)

Ernst concisely details the irony of an ecosystem once remarkably productive, precisely because of its nutrient-rich waters, becoming threatened by excessive nutrients.... Recommended. (CHOICE, August 2010)

The general public may largely view environmentalists as all being green, but author Howard Ernst points out in his latest book that the conservation community is far from a monolithic block. Rather, environmentalists come in all shades of green and he argues that the shade of green that dominates political debate could determine the future of the Chesapeake in, Fight for the Bay. Nobody understands these issues like Ernst
By A. Theodoridis
A few years ago, I read Howard Ernst's Chesapeake Bay Blues. It was, by far, the best book I had ever read about the Bay and probably the best analysis I have seen regarding the politics of environmental policy. Now it has some competition in Ernst's new book about the Bay. Nobody has so fully explored the intersection of politics and policy and the implications for environmental outcomes the way Ernst does. The disciplinary divide between scholars of political science, public policy and environmental science and policy has meant that scholarly analysis rarely integrates all of the elements involved in these complex issues. Ernst bridges these divides and, thus, is able to present the whole picture and provide suggestions that benefit from this holistic view. If you want to understand the Bay or these sorts of issues generally, you simply can't go without reading Chesapeake Bay Blues and Fight for the Bay.

Convinced ME I am NOT DOING ENOUGH
By Blue Crab
This book is the scholars version of a Michael Moore like look at the Chesapeake Bay restoration, or lack of. The eye opening approach is provocative, compelling and alarming, all features that are necessary in any Civil Rights Movement (which is what the DARK GREEN MOVEMENT is calling for). Dr. Ernst made me realize that my small contribution to Bay education foundations, my casual recycling and voluntary pollution control is simply not enough. He made me aware that I have a right to clean water and clean air, and the only way that I am going to protect those rights is the same way that Martin Luther King Jr. did, by making the law makers and enforcers accountable. Political lip service is not enough, make the politicians put their money and resources where their mouth works. If they do not, create political and legal action groups that will go after them where it hurts, their wallets and their jobs. Through protests, boycotts and lawsuits, Martin Luther King Jr. was able to accomplish in 15 years what the rest of the United States was unable to do since Emancipation Proclamation nearly 100 years prior. If we are truly going to save the Bay, we must be just as proactive in our approach. Dr. Ernst first addressed these issues in Chesapeake Bay Blues and has hit the nail on the head again in Fight for the Bay. This book is not only highly recommended, it is vital reading in any green movement -light or dark.

"Never, never, never, give up!"
By Tom Terry
I grew up on a farm near the Patuxent River in Prince George's County Maryland. Over the years I have watched how poor storm water / nutrient management practices and inadequate development regulations and other factors have degraded the Patuxent and the Chesapeake Bay. It is sad that such a resource has been so poorly stewarded by state and county officials, and how ineffective so may organizations have been in making restoration improvements.

We still manage our family farm that has been in our family since 1886, but it has been a constant battle with County officials to protect some agricultural areas, maintain adequate forest and open spaces, and to improve storm water and development regulations.

I now live in Olympia, WA on Henderson Inlet (south Puget Sound) where we have been able to improve water quality over the past 15 years due to the efforts of county government, the city of Lacey, the Capitol Land Trust, and many active community members.

I will give copies of this book to our local county officials, the heads of several of our local organizations, and our local environmental reporter so that we can strive to avoid the pitfalls that have been covered so well in Howard Ernst's book, "Fight for the Bay." This book should be required readying for every politician and student interested in conservation and natural resource management.

Tangled Routes: Women, Work, and Globalization on the Tomato Trail, by Deborah Barndt

Now in a thoroughly revised and updated edition, Tangled Routes offers a vivid interdisciplinary examination of the global food system through the journey of a corporate tomato. Through case studies in the three N.A.F.T.A. countries-Mexico, the United States, and Canada-Deborah Barndt examines the dynamic relationships between production and consumption, work and technology, biodiversity and cultural diversity, and health and environment. The compelling stories of women workers along the tomato trail humanize her analysis of globalization, taking into account the intersections of gender, race, class, family status, and north-south relations.

Review
Barndt provides a rare synthesis of academic scholarship with an eminently accessible presentation of a social activist. Her writing style and liberal use of photographs are unusual in an academic work, yet Barndt's scholarly credentials are strong. Highly recommended. (CHOICE)

Tangled Routes has much to offer a feminist classroom. The flexibility of Barndt's chosen methodology allows her to focus on one product within the entire process of getting the product from the field to the table. The magnitude of the project―globalization from above and from below―also suggests that qualitative research can be a laborious and painstaking process. It is an example for students to learn how the scope of a project may inhibit an in-depth analysis of a particular feature if there are many other different and complex parts to examine. Instructors may also explore other possible themes to use in their classrooms, such as women and work, social oppression, or cultural/corporate hegemony. Barndt's thoroughness in explaining occurrences within the food system as well as the stories of individuals directly or indirectly involved with the process, discloses an array of ideologies embedded within the global food system. Unveiling these social beliefs can elicit thought-provoking classroom conversations, allowing for rich analyses of the intersections taking place along the tomato trail. (Feminist Teacher)

In this extensively-researched book, Deborah Barndt shines a spotlight on the 'corporate tomato.' . . . An extensive index makes this an essential addition to the libraries of people concerned with justice. (Horizons: The Magazine of Presbyterian Women)

About the Author
Deborah Barndt is professor of environmental studies at York University in Toronto. A photographer and activist, she has worked with social justice movements in Canada, the United States, and Central America for over forty years.
