When Kelly Perkins learned she needed a heart transplant at the age of 30, she thought the active healthy life she loved was over. From the brink of death to the summit of Mt. Fuji, Kelly, with the support of her husband Craig, not only survived the transplant surgery, but became the first heart transplant patient to summit some of the world's most recognized peaks. The Climb of My Life tells the story of Kelly's transplant, recovery, and ascents up such mountains as Mt. Kilimanjaro-all on a borrowed heart.

Feeling down and out?
By R J H
Kelly's story is one of humor, laughter, pain, tears, and totally inspirational. Ever feel down and out? Read Kelly's story - it is uplifting knowing that one can reach death's portal, only to turn back and say "I've got mountains to climb." When you think things can't get any worse - read Kelly's story. Life gives each of us obstacles to overcome. Kelly has done so with grace, good humor, determination, with a husband encouraging her every step of the way, and with gratitude for the gift from a donor.

Read it and be inspired!
By Tamara
Kelly Perkins spirited story telling and life example will be an inspiration to anyone who reads this book! What a great chronicle of triumph over illness and victory over the seemingly impossible. The book takes you through a personal journey of the healing of body and spirit as Kelly succeeds in reaching unheard of physical challenges climbing mountains around the world; post heart transplant! The book is also an endearing love story, as Kelly tributes much of her rapid recovery and return to health and more, to her husband Craig. They teach us about courage, unconditional love, living in the moment, and overcoming obstacle thrown one's way. The pages are filled with love, humor, humility and graciousness. Kelly shows us how she lives each day to the fullest in honor of her heart donor as she now climbs mountains on a mission to raise awareness for organ and tissue donation. Truly, a great read!

Without the gift of heart and the life it saved, this amazing woman and the story she tells would not be here today. Take the time to read her story and then sign up with the National Organ and Tissue Registry if you haven't done so already!

A Wonderful Story
By L. Wasbin
If you have a heartbeat, you'll find this book moving and inspirational. What would you do if you were a healthy, active, outdoors person and suddenly became sick -- very sick? This is not a theoretical question for Kelly Perkins and her husband Craig. "The Climb Of My Life" is the story of an athletic, healthy young woman who was blindsided by a heart infection that almost killed her. Kelly is alive today because she received a heart transplant, a miracle made possible by medical science, and because of another woman's forethought (her donor's), her own will to live, and Craig's dedication.

But Kelly did more than survive. She was determined to reclaim the vigorous outdoor life she once led, even though doctors and others cautioned her that this was unrealistic. Not only did Kelly survive and regain her former vitality, she accomplished something that few "normal" people ever achieve: climbing some of the highest mountains in the world, while speaking all over the world about the importance of organ donation.

Those who have met or know the Perkinses, as I do, were already aware of the general outline of their compelling story. But it was only upon reading the book that I became aware of their struggles, despair, hope, and joy. This is a wonderful story, told with honesty and humor.

Review
First Along the River provides a concise, updated introduction to U.S environmental history. An excellent supplement for any student of the subject. (Bob Buerger)

A truly unique work, accessible to all, that demonstrates the common property nature of our global environment and its unwitting exploitation in the not so common interest. A good U.S. environmental history supplement for any environmentally oriented course. (John Stoll)

An extraordinary book that should be required reading for anyone interested in environmentalism and the future of our planet. From colonialism to the post-9/11 world, Kline provides a comprehensive, current, and approachable synthesis for anyone interested in environmentalism. (Rick, Torben C.)

Benjamin Kline's work is remarkable because of its depth and breadth in covering the topics, but also because of its brevity and accessibility to students. His descriptions of how U.S. environmental policies have emerged and evolved within social, economic and political contexts are insightful and provide the background needed to enhance our understanding of current environmental policy debates. In this way the book is a valuable addition to classes on environmental policy, as it enables students to ground ongoing efforts to grapple with difficult environmental problems within longer term economic and social trends. (Rick Welsh)

I find this a very useful text for an introductory course that I teach called 'Environment and People.' It is clear and straightforward, and yet, it is not overly simplified. It traces how resources have been used and pollution created throughout the historical development of the U.S., while reviewing the individual, organized, and institutional responses to the environmental problems created. With the addition of a new chapter on the environmental policies of the George W. Bush administration, and the new international political context in which emerging global environmental problems must now be addressed, the book provides an excellent overview for introductory courses on environmental history, politics, and policy. (Jane A. Grant)

Creating European Citizens (Europe Today), by Willem Maas

Exploring a key aspect of European integration, this clear and thoughtful book considers the remarkable experiment with common rights and citizenship in the EU. Governments around the world traditionally distinguish insiders (citizens) from outsiders (foreigners). Yet over the past half-century, an extensive set of supranational rights has been created in Europe that removes member governments' authority to privilege their own citizens, a hallmark of sovereignty. The culmination of supranational rights, European citizenship not only provides individuals with choices about where to live and work but also forces governments to respect those choices. Explaining this innovation—why states cede their sovereignty and eradicate or redefine the boundaries of the political community by including "foreigners"—Willem Maas analyzes the development of European citizenship within the larger context of the evolution of rights. Imagining more than simply a free trade market, the goal of building a "broader and deeper community among peoples" with a "destiny henceforward shared"—creating European citizens—has informed European integration since its origins. The author argues that its success or failure will not only determine the future of Europe but will also provide lessons for political integration elsewhere.

Review
Skillfully guiding the reader through a complex history, the author illustrates how the EU has multiplied the sources of rights and political identity available to individuals, thereby challenging orthodox notions of citizenship based on a mutually exclusive set of relations between state and citizen. . . . An important contribution towards understanding the contemporary condition of, and future challenges to, the European polity. (Perspectives on Politics)

Maas has written an excellent analysis and review of the evolution of European citizenship thus far. It is a welcome addition to EU literature and recommended for political scientists, historians, and scholars of the EU. The book is clearly written with extensive footnotes and references that are especially useful and valuable. There are meticulous details of negotiations and contentious debates among member states and EU institutions that bring a deeper understanding of EU workings behind closed doors. . . . Highly recommended. (CHOICE)

In this short but very detailed work, Willem Maas seeks to outline the history of citizenship as it applies to the European Union and its antecedent organizations. The focus is both on 'the "high politics" of intergovernmental conferences'―and their behind-the-scenes compromises―and 'the "low politics" of interpretation by the Court and implementation by the Commission.' Developments in both of these areas are clearly outlined and analyzed. . . . What comes through in Maas's work is the sense that European Union citizenship is a clear illustration of both the achievements and limitations of European integration. (Canadian Journal of Political Science)

Rather than focusing narrowly on the economic ramifications of integration, the author explores the drive to create a wider community of people. . . . Well written, with the argument set out in a chronological and straightforward fashion. . . . This book will appeal to theorists and practitioners alike, as well as undergraduates and those with a more specialist interest in issues of integration, citizenship, and nationalism. (Political Studies Review)

Maas's book provides a clear description and thoughtful analysis of the history of European citizenship from the Treaties of Paris and Rome in the 1950s until the present phase of European integration marked by the debate on the EU constitution. An examination of the rise of European citizenship enables a better understanding of the political nature of the European project. Contrary to the majority of works on European integration. . . . Maas argues that European political development is a manifestation of the drive to create not only a free trade zone but also a community of people. (Journal of Common Market Studies)

[The book] has many strengths. . . . The organization of the book is masterly. All these issues are woven together in a mere 120 pages of text in such a way that none of their complexity is lost, while, at the same time, the book could easily be read by an interested member of the public as well as the student or scholar. (Elizabeth Meehan Race Relations Abstracts)

Willem Maas's study is a definitive political history of European citizenship rights and the free movement of persons, from the Treaties of Paris and Rome in the 1950s to the struggles over the EU constitution. It combines careful empirical documentation with incisive political theory, on a subject insufficiently studied by mainstream political science. While offering an upbeat account of the steady expansion and deepening of the remarkable legal construction of European citizenship, he wisely reminds us of its limitations and reversibility. (Adrian Favell, Centre d’études européennes de Sciences Po)

Willem Maas is Jean Monnet Chair in European Integration and associate professor of political science at Glendon College, York University, Toronto.

Impressions of Hume: Cinematic Thinking and the Politics of Discontinuity (Modernity and Political Thought), by Davide Panagia

Davide Panagia’s Impressions of Hume: Cinematic Thinking and the Politics of Discontinuity is volume fifteen of Modernity and Political Thought, the Rowman & Littlefield series in contemporary political theory. Through close attention to Hume’s theories of sensation, Davide Panagia conceptualizes the modern even more radically (though also more literally) than many of the previous authors in this series. While devoting attention to how a historical thinker such as Hume is read and misread, used and abused in the modern intellectual world, Panagia also focuses on developing a theory of Humean perception and by so doing emphasizes the contemporaneity of Hume’s thought. In what at first seems to be an anachronistic as well as wildly curious claim about a philosopher of the eighteenth century, Panagia holds that Hume was a cinematic thinker.

Review
Davide Panagia has offered a very important contribution to Hume scholarship that promises to show the relevance of Hume to a number of contemporary debates and discussions. (Theory & Event)

In a terse and vivid reading Panagia affiliates Hume’s Treatise with the experience of cinema: evanescent, kaleidoscopic, flickering, forever unsettling. Resisting regulation or consensus, Hume’s writings on sensation enable us to put an aesthetic of film in the service of a politics. A committed and sustained reflection on every page, Impressions offers a pragmatic and historically informed treatment of philosophy and cinema. (Tom Conley, Department of Romance Languages, Harvard University)

Thinking About Deviance: A Realistic Perspective, by Paul Higgins, Mitch Mackinem

Thinking About Deviance, second edition, explores how people participate in and produce the phenomena of deviance. Through nineteen brief and provocative chapters, such as "Is Deviance Harmful or Helpful?", "Once Deviant, Always Deviant?", and "Do You Get the Time Because You Did the Crime?", the book examines how everyone is involved in the many facets of deviance. While a small portion of deviance may seem to be exotic, done by people on the fringe of society, deviance is an integral part of society and of conventional people's lives. By using everyday instances of deviance familiar to college students (such as shoplifting, academic cheating, underage drinking, and smoking) and examples from the media, the book engages readers and enables them to develop more general thinking about deviance. Through an interactive style in which the readers are asked questions and presented with hypothetical and actual situations for their thoughts, the book creates a "conversation" with the readers. It encourages readers to think about and question deviance, including their participation in and their assumptions about it, in ways they are unlikely to have done before.

Thought provoking and sobering in inference (if you think about it), the authors deploy the sociological imagination to link the public and private social spheres using deviance as a bridge. Well done and comfortable read.

Review
Gender and the Politics of Possibilities stresses the agency of actors within a globalized world, and hence emphasizes the capacities – or in Desai's own words, 'possibilities” and “creativity – of African informal cross-border traders, transnational feminists, and cultural producers. (Valentine M. Moghadam, Northeastern University)

Manisha Desai provides an important contribution to the literature on globalization by showing why “grassroots” women's activities in these areas need to be reassessed, arguing effectively that they are neglected, undervalued or underappreciated. (Robert K. Schaeffer, professor of sociology, California Polytechnic State University)

I think this book gives a clear and new look at globalization with a gender lens (Mazie Hough, University of Maine)

About the Author
Manisha Desai is director of women's studies and associate professor of sociology at the University of Connecticut.

Debating the Civil Rights Movement, 1945-1968 (Debating Twentieth-Century America), by Steven F. Lawson, Charles Payne

No other book about the civil rights movement captures the drama and impact of the black struggle for equality better than Debating the Civil Rights Movement, 1945–1968. Two of the most respected scholars of African-American history, Steven F. Lawson and Charles M. Payne, examine the individuals who made the movement a success, both at the highest level of government and in the grassroots trenches. Review
The second edition of Debating the Civil Rights Movement introduces students to Martin Luther King as a 'genuine revolutionary' with an insightful essay by Steve Lawson and King's 'Where Do We Go from Here' speech. King's admonition that the problems of race, economic exploitation, and war 'are all tied together' has haunting relevance for readers today. Transcriptions of interviews with Bob Moses, E.W. Steptoe, and Fannie Lou Hamer in Charles Payne's section, 'The View from the Trenches,' vividly illustrate perseverance and courage of grass roots organizers and the value of oral history in giving voice to 'local people' in the struggle for civil rights. (Barbara Steinson, DePauw University)

For use in the classroom, this book cuts straight to the heart of the matter. My students have appreciated the work's conciseness as well as the spirited engagement between the authors. The new edition, moreover, incorporates a new and valuable essay by Lawson as well as some powerful interviews conducted by Payne and others, which provide further source material for students to discuss. This remains my favorite civil rights text for use in my American history courses. (Paul Harvey, University of Colorado)

This book teaches well and I will use it again. (Zachary M. Schrag, author of The Great Society Subway: A History of the Washington Metro)

Debating the civil rights movement
By Joseph Schwartz
Charles Payne is the essential historian of the civil rights movement. His interview with Bob Moses in this collection is an excellent example of his depth of understanding of SNCC and the organising philosophy behind the CRM that succeeded in cracking segregation and terror-enforced white supremacy in the Deep South.

A true debate
By Diego
I read this book for a class on Civil Rights at the University level. It consists of two sides of a debate, with a number of documents attached by each author to support his position. In summary, it pits the "big-event" theory of the civil rights movement ("top down" by Lawson) against the bottom-up approach argued by Payne. Both arguments are very well done and by putting the two positions together the reader will have a nicely-balanced summary of the civil rights movement in the middle of the 20th Century.

Debating the Civil Right Movement 1968
By S.Webb II
Debating the Civil Right Movement 1968
Throughout the second civil rights movement, many historians' views varied when it came to the role of national and local governments, and its counterparts (local citizens and special interest groups) participation in national equality. In the book Debating the Civil Right Movement 1968 the authors Steven F. Lawson and Charles Payne debate the issue of the civil rights movement. Steven F. Lawson believed that the national government involvement brought equality during this era; Charles Payne believed that the local trenches pressured the national government into becoming active in this movement.
The NAACP was the first to strike the goliath known as the American Educational inequity issue, with court cases such as Sweatt v. Painter and McLaurin v. Board of Regents. Representing the NAACP as Chief Counsel in these matters, Thurgood Marshall argued on their behalf, that even with an increase in financial aid that black schools and institutions still left a mark of inferiority on the black educational system. But the blow that made the greatest impact was in 1959.
Chief Justice Earl Warren argued indirectly against white supremacy. His direct national argument was that under the current system "separate but equal" the educational system was inherently unequal because "it was impossible for blacks to obtain the full benefits of an education under the current system of segregation (Lawson pg 11). This interpretation by a representative of the national government indirectly showed the national governments stance on educational segregation.
Across our nation students black and white came together to fight the inequalities that our nation were facing. February 1, 1961, the Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee was organized for American Civil Rights Movement. SNCC organized coordinated a sit-in where they invited Martin Luther King Jr. They thought if King was arrested it would create a national uproar. Their plan worked in some respects. Presidential candidate democrat John F. Kennedy used this to his benefit for the 1960 presidential election. He spoke out on behalf of king and other civil rights leaders by taking a stand. It helped him garner votes of many Blacks in our nation. With the president and National government pushing for their equality it helped Blacks more than any protest or rally they had.
On June 11, 1963, a televised speech by President Kennedy, gave support to the Civil Rights Movement national government. The author's perspective was that this was the first time the national government shook the inequities of the Civil Rights to the core. The report aimed its cross hairs at the issue using the president's TV and radio announcements and not through the orthodox way of law making and policy. John F. Kennedy's report painted a picture of civil rights struggle as a nation to fight for equality, while fighting for others hypocritical, because we are struggling in our own country to look at blacks as equal. That report in the authors mind was stronger and more effective than any sit-in or protest.
The view from the local trenches depicted was more personable than the role of our national government, but just as important, Men, like Vernon Dahmer, who owned local stores and businesses were the trailblazers for the fight for justice. He encouraged teenagers in the community to become involved in the movement. Many of the youth that he mentored went on to become important within the SNCC and the Congress of Racial Equality or CORE. Dahmer also pushed voter registration after the Voting Rights Act. As a direct movement result Dahmer's businesses and houses were fire bombed and he died for the cause. His lasts words were, "People who don't vote are deadbeats on the state" (Payne Pg 120). This is an example of who Charles Payne believed local and other counterparts played a role in the success of the movement.
In many instances, the national government failed to protect its Black citizens. Many Blacks were denied their right to vote and freedom of speech. People like Bob Moses were brought in to repressed areas like the Mississippi Delta to strengthen the number of civil rights activists in the area. He was extremely successful in doing so. Blacks started to become more involved in politics and started to vote more in the local government. Many Whites fought back by beating and killing activist. The lesson stated in the book on (Payne pg 122) states "The Justice Department cannot be counted on, and the broader society shows little interest. How do you appeal to the conscience of a nation that is ignoring you?"
In Debating the Civil Rights Movement 1945-1968 the authors argues about the key components and events in the second civil rights movement. Harry Truman, Ella Baker, John F. Kennedy, The NAACP, and other policies and laws were keys to the success of the movement. The one thing that the two authors agreed on was that both national and local governments needed each other to make the era a success.

Lies That Bind: Chinese Truth, Other Truths, by Susan D. Blum

This provocative book explores the ideology of truth and deception in China, offering a nuanced perspective on social interaction in different cultural settings. Drawing on decades of fieldwork in China, Susan D. Blum offers an authoritative examination of rules, expectations, and beliefs regarding lying and honesty in society. Blum points to a propensity for deception in Chinese public interactions in situations where people in the United States would expect truthfulness, yet argues that lying is evaluated within Chinese society by moral standards different from those of Americans. Chinese, for example, might emphasize the consequences of speech, Americans the absolute truthfulness. Blum considers the longstanding values that led to this style of interaction, as well as more recent factors, such as the government's control over expression. But Chinese society is not alone in the practice of such customs. The author observes that many Americans also excel in manipulation of language, yet find a simultaneous moral absolutism opposed to lying in any form. She also considers other traditions, including Japanese and Jewish, that struggle to control the boundaries of lying, balancing human needs with moral values in contrasting ways. Deception and lying, the book concludes, are distinctively cultural yet universal—inseparable from what it is to be a human being equipped with language in all its subtlety.

Review
Blum's charming and thoughtful Lies That Bind [takes] up the challenge to explain differences in behavior without saying that Chinese are just peculiar. Blum studies the expectations and beliefs regarding lying and honesty not only in China but everywhere. (Asiamedia)

Lies That Bind is an insightful book, which explores the complex ideology of truth, lies and deception in China and beyond. . . . Overall, this is a very enjoyable book to read, and could be used in courses on reality and fiction in Chinese literature, society and history. (The China Journal)

Charming and thoughtful. (Froginawell.Com)

A fascinating book that takes a comparative look at the social meanings and implications of various kinds of truths and untruths in China. . . . Blum's arguments are convincingly illustrated with a plethora of rich, insightful examples. . . . Lies That Bind is a groundbreaking book that should be of interest to anyone interested in Chinese culture, sociolinguistics, or the nature of human discourse. It is also well-written, engaging, and very enjoyable to read. (American Ethnologist)

Kant claimed that lying was always immoral. George Washington, according to Parson Weems (who may not have been telling the truth), said, 'I cannot tell a lie.' Jesus of Nazareth promised that 'Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.' What happens when this primordial moral value (often skirted in real everyday practice, of course) encounters a different set of cultural precepts? With acute observation, wit, and subtle comparisons, Susan Blum explores the difficult zone between what is and what ought to be in journeys across ambiguous cultural territory. Lies That Bind records the 'experiments with truth' that make up the anthropologist's education. (Haun Saussy, Yale University)

Ambitious examination of the role of truth and deception in Chinese society
By E. Jaksetic
The author, a professor of anthropology, draws upon a wide variety of sources to examine and discuss the role of truth and deception in Chinese society: her personal experiences in China; anthropological studies; linguistic analysis; books and articles on truth and deception; Chinese history and literature; and articles and books on modern China. The author adds some interesting perspective to her efforts by comparing the role of truth and deception in Chinese society with the role of truth and deception in Anglo-American society, Japanese society, and Judaism.

Although the book is worth reading, it suffers from being too ambitious and trying to cover too much ground in a book of this length. An odd aspect of the book is the inclusion of an Appendix ("Theoretical Foundations and Implications") that clearly illustrates the importance of various ideas and concepts to the author's reasoning and analysis. Given the importance of those ideas and concepts to the author's thinking, they should have been integrated into the main body of the author's discussion and analysis, not added as an afterthought or side discussion. The book has an extensive References section that provides citations to numerous publications that could be helpful to anyone doing scholarly research on the subjects of truth and deception.

Overall, I would rate this book as a modest introduction to the subject of the role of truth and deception in Chinese society, but one that needs further elaboration and analysis. Anyone interested in a scholarly look at the role of truth and deception should consider including this book in their reading list.

Very good book.
By Peter Huston
I'm shocked that no one has recommended or reviewed this book. I`ve lived, worked and taught English in China for two years and Taiwan for another four and hold a master's degree in East Asian studies with a focus on Chinese history.

This is a very good book. I could easily give it four or five stars. I've recommended it to several people as something they should read and others have recommended it to me. The book basically deals with the question of when is it acceptable to knowingly state things that are not true in Chinese culture. (Of course, the Chinese, being humans, will sometimes lie when it is not considered acceptable in their culture, same as people from all cultures sometimes do.) On the other hand, there are times when Chinese (and people from other cultures including Westerners) consider it appropriate or even admirable to state falsehoods. --that is the focus of what this book covers and it covers it well.

Kids These Days: Facts and Fictions About Today's Youth, by Karen Sternheimer University of Southern California

Kids snatched from their bedrooms, shot at in school, fatter than ever, prone to risk-taking and cruelty…is childhood today as bad as the news accounts would have us believe? Is this generation headed for disaster?

Kids These Days: Facts and Fictions About Today's Youth critically examines the hottest news stories of the past few years to assess whether the news is really as bad as it sounds. For instance, is kidnapping by strangers really a bigger threat now than in the past? Are disputes at school now settled with guns instead of fists? And are kids, especially girls, becoming bigger bullies than ever before? Kids These Days looks at the stories that made headlines and goes deeper to explore overall trends and statistics to compare the hype to reality. The truth is, kids today do face unique obstacles and challenges, but their situation isn't nearly as dire as the compelling news accounts would have us believe.

Our nation's youth have been targeted as a problem population to absolve adult responsibility for creating the often dangerous and difficult conditions many young people must endure. Kids These Days will give the reader pause and perspective to better understand the realities of the first generation to come of age in the twenty-first century.

Review
Sternheimer has examined the powerful shaping influence of US print media articles on youth and linked these perceptions to policy and community reaction to youth. Her analysis of newspaper articels reveals perceived youth characteristics―dangerous, subject to physical harm, gluttonous, misbehaving school students, stupid, easily seduced into deviant behavior―as essential components justifying US adult fear of youth. . . . Sternheimer challenges these misperceptions with the available evidence arising from natiaonal research and critical thinking, and details the impact of socioecnomic class stratification and gender. Highly recommended. (CHOICE)

Kids These Days makes a critically needed contribution to our understanding of modern youth and their distorted image in the popular media. It is both intellectually stimulating and accessible to a wide variety of readers, including youths themselves. There is an avalanche of perfectly awful, same-themed books by popular and academic authors…[Sternheimer] takes a radically different approach and has produced a book that freshens this stifling, sterile climate with dramatically new information. I believe it is ahead of its time… and could well generate the kind of attention Culture of Fear received. I would recommend it without hesitation as a text or popular work that documents, analyzes, and challenges the destructive myths about 'kids today.' (Mike Males, University of California, Santa Cruz)

One of the best books on teens
By Michael A. Males
Karen Sternheimer has followed up her excellent "It's Not the Media" with another highly readable, incisive work that demolishes the rampant myths about teens today. In a time of terrible, misleading, distortion-packed anti-youth books flooding bookshelves, Sternheimer consistently uses logical analysis and vivid examples that treat teenagers not as some alien scourge, but with the respect and fairness that we would expect for our own adult groups in society. As a former teacher, I recommend this book not just for good reading and information, but as a scholarly text in courses on youth, sociology, psychology, media analysis, critical thinking, and related fields.
