This fully revised and updated edition of Donald Weatherbee's widely praised text offers a clear and comprehensive introduction to the international relations of contemporary Southeast Asia. The author analyzes the Southeast Asian states' efforts to adapt to a regional international environment that is characterized by the security demands of the war on terrorism; the economic demands of globalism; and the political demands of nontraditional issues such as democracy, human rights, the environment, and gender. These shifting dynamics take place in a broader framework of diminished U.S. power and enhanced Chinese influence that could well undermine Southeast Asia's autonomy. An invaluable guide to the region, this balanced and lucid work will be an essential text for courses on Southeast Asia and on the international relations of the Asia-Pacific.

PRAISE FOR THE FIRST EDITION A remarkable tour d'horizon that applies historical, geographic, anthropological, sociological, and political frameworks for a multidimensional assessment of Southeast Asia's past, present, and future. The book's analysis of domestic and international politics as well as traditional and non-traditional security issues makes it a must for students and policymakers of Asian affairs. (Simon, Sheldon W.)
Donald Weatherbee, an eminent scholar on Southeast Asia, has updated his superb volume on the region's international relations. The book blends analysis from different fields to provide a comprehensive view of Southeast Asia's problems and prospects. His encyclopedic knowledge of the region and incisive approach combine to yield a vital resource for both generalists and specialists. (David B. H. Denoon)
This book is an excellent addition to the existing literature on international relations in Southeast Asia. Unlike similar books, its approach is thematic and moves away from a traditionally historical approach. This book is highly recommended for those who want to gain a general understanding of events in Southeast Asia in the context of international relations. (East Asia Integration Studies)
If you are looking for an excellent text on international relations in Southeast Asia from a realist perspective, this book is arguably the best. Weatherbee provides superb insights with strong empirical support that call into question the theoretical validity of liberal institutionalism, functionalism, social constructivism and environmentalism. . . . I highly recommend the book to anyone interested in Southeast Asian politics. (Pacific Affairs)

A comprehensive overview of Southeast Asian IR
By Arnold
This is a very comprehensive book covering almost every significant aspect of international relations in Southeast Asia. It discusses not just "hard" issues such as security, but also human rights, environment, and even counter-narcotics. It works very well as an introductory textbook for international relations in the region.
At times I felt the book was unbalanced with some minor issues (such as trafficking) receiving far more attention than they deserved, while energy and natural resource diplomacy received almost none. The latter is crucial for understanding the region today, especially Myanmar. Historically, much of Southeast Asian trade has been in natural resources (such as natural gas from Malaysia), but the chapter on the economy barely mentions this.
The book and writing style are somewhat dry. This has its benefits as Weatherbee does not push any agenda or IR theory. However, for those looking for more opinions on ASEAN (as well as coverage of more recent events) see Donald Emmerson's "Hard Choices."
