Espiritu examines the historical and contemporary experiences of Asian American women and men―with each other and with the dominant white society―from a gendered perspective. Locating gender in its intersection with race and class, this is one of the few works in ethnic studies or women's/gender studies that actually discusses the matrix of race/gender/class structures of oppression within a specific racial-ethnic community, i.e., Asian Americans, one that is also largely an immigrant community. Espiritu lends support to charges by women of color that traditional feminist theory falsely universalizes the category of 'women,' and overlooks the positions that white men and white women occupy over men of color. She also admits that this work does not disrupt the 'male-centered' framework of Asian American studies. The historical oppression of Asian Americans is explored along material and cultural lines, e.g., the formal and informal labor markets, including prostitution; family and small businesses; Japanese American internment; marriage and family; refugee resettlement; racist stereotyping. I found the book to be an excellent source of information.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Even though, I "knew" the political and societal situations of Asian Americans in the United States, it still was an eye opener. This book gave me an oppertunity to understand some of my believes and how they were formed. I think it is a must read for everyone who is from Asian decent and who would like to understand the Asian American experiences. The author did a wonderful job of integrating all aspects of Asian culture. I highly recommend this book.

Once again Professor Espiritu has written a book that not only conveys the Asian American experience but more importantly the human experience. This book is for those of us who live the Asian American experience and for those willing to educate themselves about our country's racial heirarchy compounded by the disparity between genders.

Rubenstein (religion, Univ. of Bridgeport), a distinguished scholar of Holocaust and genocide studies, describes how 9/11 caused a shift in his research focus to radical Islam and its genocidal threat. He traces jihadism in the writings of some prominent advocates and practitioners―Sayyad Qutb, Sayyid Abul Al'la al-Mawdudi, Abdullah Yusuf Azzam, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and bin Laden. Rubenstein presents a case study of the Armenian massacres in Ottoman Turkey (1894-96), which culminated in genocide (1915-23), as an early example of genocidal jihadism. He details the pro-Nazi activities of Hajj Amin al-Husseini against Balkan Jews and plans to liquidate Palestinian Jewry. Recent jihadist threats are seen emanating from the growing Muslim population in Europe, the rise of anti-Semitism, and the possibility of an Iranian-Shiite apocalyptic nuclear confrontation with Israel. While some readers will take issue with aspects of Rubenstein's analysis, his conclusions should be taken seriously: the rage among Islamists against Israel and the US is driven by the shame brought on by successive Muslim defeats since the 1500s; this rage will continue until the shame is erased by genocide, if Islamist threats are taken seriously. An Urgently Needed Book For Our Times

In light of the latest attack on American's traveling by air, one must read this well researched and thought out exploration of historical and contemporary jihad. Dr. Rubenstein writes in a clear and approachable prose and the text is well documented. If Americans think jihad is not relevant to us, that "it's out there somewhere," we are mistaken. Dr. Rubenstein points out, for example, that every time we go to an airport and must submit to invasive, time consuming, and apparently ineffective searches, jihad is there. This book is a comprehensive exposition of radical Islam's intent to wipe out not only Jews, but Americans of every background who do not submit to them. We have to take Islamists at their word when they declare that it is an "individual duty for every Muslim who can do it in any country in which it is possible" to "kill Americans and their allies--civilians and military." We cannot stay in denial about the aim of jihad that is being waged against us by radical Muslims. An urgently needed book for our times.,

Open your mind based on evidence

Through out the entire book Mr. Rubenstein presents evidence of the intent of Radical Islam, and evidence that we cannot distinguish where radical Islam ends and Moderate Islam begins. Thess people are dangerouse and there is no good way for the world to deal with the situation. After reading the book, I feel that there is no apeasement that will work. If there was a way to apease then the tiny country of Isreal would have peace as would the rest of the world. The western world must remain strong in our resolve and understand that no agreement can be a true agreement with a radical and maybe even moderate Muslims. Their goal is not peace, but rather to make the whole world Muslim. "Death to Infedels" means "death to Infidels"!

A Scarier Book You Are Not Likely to Read

I had the honor of studying under the author in college. He is a Holocaust scholar who strongly suggests we take militant Islamists at their word when they chant "Death to Israel" or worse. What follows is a series of densely-packed essays with three major points: (1) Religious genocide is a prominent feature of certain Islamist theology, particularly in modern times; (2) The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, known to have been a Nazi ally, was closely affiliated with the "final solution" and made plans to bring it to Palestine; (3) The apocalyptic rhetoric of the current Iranian regime (let alone ISIS, who emerged after this book was published) has a theological basis and should not be dismissed as rhetorical hyperbole. But it is not as if Dr. Rubenstein, who is a VERY realistic thinker, expects Western power brokers to take heed. Motives include latent anti-Semitism but mostly pure, oil-greased greed. Does this branch represent "true" Islam? Probably not, but he argues it doesn't matter because right now they have, or are close to having, the technology, to pull off their own Holocaust.

Excellent

Brook does an excellent job in broaching this topic that many have attempted before him, and I'm sure many will attempt after. Considering how little is known about Khazaria, how much history has been either censored or re-written by the former Soviet Union, and the relatively sparse amount of archaelogical work that has been conducted in the region, Brook brings much information to light, detailing the tribal and linguistic origins of the Khazars. In comparison with Koestler's "The Thirteenth Tribe," Brook's work is more about presenting facts than coming to conclusions.
I would encourage everyone interested in this book, this subject and in modern Judaism in general to remember that 'conclusions' are based on current and past knowledge, not on future discoveries. Sarkel is still under water and will continue to be for the foreseeable future -- who knows what information it holds? People have been twisting the ideas and findings discussed in "The Thirteenth Tribe" and "The Jews of Khazaria" to promote hatred for Jews for quite some time. That's not the purpose of these works, as Arthur Koestler himself addressed at the end of "The Thirteenth Tribe."
I've also used the bibliography to further my own knowledge, although I have found that many of the sources are out-of-print.
I look forward to learning more about the Khazars, who they were and who they became -- for today, I highly recommend Brook's "The Jews of Khazaria." It is excellently written, a fascinating work and will open it's readers eyes to some lesser known history.
Savor it, but don't rush to judgement!

Excellent book, the latest on Khazars

The book not only traces the history of the people of Khazaria, brings the latest archeological data and links between Khazars and East European peoples it highlights every detail of their conversion to Judaism, their political and religious influence, their military might. Indeed everything is supported by a comprehensive set of documents and articles. Very rich bibliography although it'd be good to see more visual material (maps, etc.). Great effort to deliver an exciting aspect of our history.

Comprehensive and interesting (albeit sometimes "dry")

The book aims to capture the history of Khazaria, a Jewish state near the Caspian sea that reigned between the 7th to 11th centuries, starting as a small tribe and growing in size and in power. The book is primarily based on archival and linguistic discoveries. The author starts in 650 AD when migration patterns westward and wars with the Muslim forces from the south brought to the fore of history the Khazar empire. Khazaria was located roughly between of present day Hungary from its east and Persia in its west. The Khazars, originally nomads known for their fierce fighting tradition, defended their region and became a loose state about mid 6thcentury.
The controversy about Khazar Jews and their intermingle with Jews in Lithuania, Poland and Rumania is discussed at the conclusion of the book. First, the author describes other incidents when non-Jewish tribes converted and became "children of Moses". Examples are brought from the Avars and Cumans in Europe, Edmoites in the middle east, and the "Children of Moses" in Ethopia, sometimes known as the Falshas.) Then author then contends that it is quite possible that Khazar Jews, now disbursed amongst several nations, intermarried with "local" or "genuine" jews, most notably in Lithuania as well as in Poland.
The book is somewhat `academic' in its discussion, but very readable. The book boasts in using "archeological" finds in its discussion; in fact, it mentions only a few such finds. It further fails to include maps, documents and other images that would have made it more interesting and `real'. Nonetheless, the writing is not `heavy' and the organization is intuitive. Each chapter can be read separately and the footnotes are worth gleaning over. Although some maps appear at the end of chapter 2, and some tables appear at the ends of chapters 3, 4 and 7, they hardly help illustrate the rich history narrated within the chapters.
For genealogists who are interested in the controversial around the origins of dark-hair or red-hair jews in Lithuania and Poland, I recommend reading a couple of introductory chapters and then skimming through to the end. For history buffs, I recommend reading the whole book and perhaps use a map to aid in the reading as there are numerous references to battles, invasions and travel routes that would be much easier to understand with a map at hand.
This is not an intro-to-genealogy or a how-to-start-genealogy book. I found the subject of Khazaria and the Jewish diaspora, and the narrative in The Jews of Khazaria enriching and expanding my 15 years of family history work. Therefor, I mostly recommend this book for genealogists with at least 5 years experience, with some idea about the origins of the families that arrived from the Pale of Settlement; Of course, independently, the subject of the empire of Khazraia is a rich with history and glamour. I find that the narrative of Khazaria and its place in Jewish history well narrated by Brook.

This volume is written by one of the founders of the women's movement and an influential author in women's studies. Always a scholar-activist, Jo Freeman brings her own experiences to bear in this personal reflection on various events in the history of political women in the U.S. Fifteen selections combine previously published writing with newer material, such as an epilogue on the election of Nancy Pelosi as the first woman Speaker of the House. In the first section, covering up to 1920, we learn some `forgotten' historical details, so that broad, sweeping generalizations about the lack of women in U.S. politics can no longer be made. The second section on breaking barriers features discusses the over 50 women who have run for the office of President, as well as some other women `firsts.' The third section on public policy covers familiar ground such as the equal rights amendment and comparable worth. This volume provides the insight of a fervent participant in politics, rather than dry academic theories, but is more of an enjoyable collection of historical essays than a standard textbook.
