Women in Early Imperial China (Asia/Pacific/Perspectives), by Bret Hinsch

After a long spell of chaos, the Qin and Han dynasties (221 B.C.E.-220 C.E.) saw the unification of the Chinese Empire under a single ruler, government, and code of law. During this era, changing social and political institutions affected the ways people conceived of womanhood. New ideals were promulgated, and women's lives gradually altered to conform to them. And under the new political system, the rulers' consorts and their families obtained powerful roles that allowed women unprecedented influence in the highest level of government.Recognized as the leading work in the field, this introductory survey offers the first sustained history of women in the early imperial era. Now in a revised edition that incorporates the latest scholarship and theoretical approaches, the book draws on extensive primary and secondary sources in Chinese and Japanese to paint a remarkably detailed picture of the distant past. Bret Hinsch's introductory chapters orient the nonspecialist to early imperial Chinese society; subsequent chapters discuss women's roles from the multiple perspectives of kinship, wealth and work, law, government, learning, ritual, and cosmology. An enhanced array of line drawings, a Chinese-character glossary, and extensive notes and bibliography enhance the author's discussion. Historians and students of gender and early China alike will find this book an invaluable overview.

detailed, scholarly and accessable for the non-specialist
By doc peterson
I picked up _Women in Imperial China_, expecting a relatively straight forward history and analysis of the role and place of women during the QIn (221 - 206 BCE) and Han (202 BCE - 220 CE) dynasties. What I got was much more complex, nuanced and detailed than I could have possibly imagined. In his introduction, Hinsch explains that even under the Han China was incredibly varied by region: "every hundred li there were different habits; every thousand li there were different customs; Households had different governments; people wore distinguishing clothes." (Mind you, this is a China much smaller than that of the 21st century.) Added to this are "varied and often contradictory" attitudes towards women even in the same region. In spite of these tremendous obstacles, a comprehensible historical narrative has been written that gives a richly detailed and incredibly nuanced perspective of the role of women during this 400 year (221 BCE - 220 CE) time span.

To help non-Asian specialists such as myself make sense of the variety of roles and perspectives of women, the book is organized topically, with chapters on Kinship, Wealth and Work (detailing social class differences), Law, Government, Education, and Ritual. Regardless of topic, Hinsch finds a number of common threads common to women: how Chinese understanding of gender shapes societal roles from the economic interdependence of genders (in work, regardless of social class and marriage) and the social status of women (within households and, by extension, the empire), to the importance of women's participation in the spiritual life of ancient China. Much to my suprise, the place and role of women was much more vibrant, active and highly regarded than I had imagined.

For those interested in womens' studies, ancient Chinese history or the Han dynasty in particular, I strongly recommend this book. For the armchair historian, Hinsch does not presuppose knowledge of Chinese culture and history and goes to great lengths to explain and "break down" many of the terms and concepts alien to a western audience. It is a fascinating read.

Blundering to Glory: Napoleon's Military Campaigns, by Owen Connelly

Renowned for its accuracy, brevity, and readability, this book has long been the gold standard of concise histories of the Napoleonic Wars. Now in an updated and revised edition, it is unique in its portrayal of one of the world's great generals as a scrambler who never had a plan, strategic or tactical, that did not break down or change of necessity in the field. Distinguished historian Owen Connelly argues that Napoleon was the master of the broken play, so confident of his ability to improvise, cover his own mistakes, and capitalize on those of the enemy that he repeatedly plunged his armies into uncertain, seemingly desperate situations, only to emerge victorious as he "blundered" to glory.

Beginning with a sketch of Napoleon's early life, the book progresses to his command of artillery at Toulon and the "whiff of grapeshot" in Paris that netted him control of the Army of Italy, where his incredible performance catapulted him to fame. The author vividly traces Napoleon's campaigns as a general of the French Revolution and emperor of the French, knowledgeably analyzing each battle's successes and failures. The author depicts Napoleon's "art of war" as a system of engaging the enemy, waiting for him to make a mistake, improvising a plan on the spot-and winning. Far from detracting from Bonaparte's reputation, his blunders rather made him a great general, a "natural" who depended on his intuition and ability to read battlefields and his enemy to win. Exploring this neglected aspect of Napoleon's battlefield genius, Connelly at the same time offers stirring and complete accounts of all the Napoleonic campaigns.

Review
Connelly's summaries of the action are clear and concise; his description of the social and political context in which Napoleon fought is exquisite; his portrayal of the personalities of Napoleon's marshals is lively and insightful; and his portrait of Napoleon's ambition and drive to win is superb. (Military Review)

A thoroughly stimulating and enjoyable volume. Connelly examines all the campaigns with exemplary conciseness, and the same is to be said of his treatment of the battles. . . . Whether this book entertains or (occasionally) infuriates, it makes a reader think. (Journal of the Society for Army Historical Research)

This is a concise, clear, authoritative account presented in a felicitous literary style. Of the many works on Napoleon's thirty-year career, this is the best brief account. (Canadian Military History)

Readers will find this book useful to have in their library. Connelly gently but surely draws the readers into questioning whether or not Napoleon ever had a strategic aim. (Journal of the Royal Artillery)

Owen Connelly, one of the leading American historians of the French Revolution–Napoleonic Era, has that rare gift of being able to take complex and complicated information and produce a tight, smooth-flowing narrative. What is unique about this study is that it is both scholarly, based upon excellent research with good maps and a fine bibliography, and also written in a language [students] will appreciate and understand. Highly recommended. (CHOICE)

Interesting View of Napoleon's Campaigns
By LoneRunner
Mr. Connelly asserts that much of Napoleon's success was a result of his ability to take advantage of opponents' mistakes and the availability of excellent subordinates such as Lannes, Davout, and Massena. For example, Mr. Connelly points out correctly that lack of competent subordinates was a major factor that led to Napoleon's loss at Waterloo. I recommend this book for anyone interested in Napoleon. It's well written, has nice touches of humor, and provides details about Napoleon, his generals, and his strategy and tactics that you will not find elsewhere. Don't get me wrong, my Campaigns of Napoleon still comes first, but it was wonderful to place the two books side by side and unearth golden insights into Napoleon that I had not yet discovered.

My only complaint, hence the four stars, was the lack of good maps to follow the description. Mr. Connelly includes serviceable maps for each campaign but I frequently had trouble finding the town or location he referenced. Also, matching arrows on the map to his written narrative was confusing. As a result, I used other reference material to follow the book's descriptions.

For those readers, like me, who consider Napoleon to be one of history's greatest military geniuses, be ready to get irritated with every minor mistake of Napoleon being pointed out and most of the credit for his victories being doled out to various marshalls. But seriously, in Mr. Connelly's defense, that's the point of the book, to point out Napoleon's mistakes and recognize his genius in turning blunders into victory.

If you only read one book about Napoleon’s military campaigns, read this one
By Aaron P. Jackson
This book presents a concise (234 pp.) account of Napoleon’s military campaigns from the First Italian Campaign (1796-7) to Waterloo (1815). It is very clearly written, consistently and well argued, and accessible to a specialist and non-specialist audience alike (if this is the first substantive book you read about Napoleon’s campaigns, you are likely to gain from it a good idea about how they transpired and a reasonable idea about why).

Connelly’s core argument is that Napoleon’s genius lay not in his ability to plan, nor in his strategic insight. On the contrary, this book concludes that Napoleon never had a plan and that on the occasions when he strategised, the strategy he developed often proved upon implementation to have been based on faulty assumptions. Furthermore, Napoleon was not the tactical innovator he is often credited as being, although he was responsible for the important reorganisation of the French army based on a corps structure (rather than a brigade or division structure, as had hitherto the case—Napoleon subordinated both of these organisations to the corps). He seems instead to have perfected the existing tactics of his era to an unsurpassed extent (this achievement should not be understated but, as Connelly highlights, perfecting existing methods is not the same thing as outright innovation).

Napoleon’s true genius, according to Connelly, lay in his ability to “scramble”, i.e. to quickly improvise solutions to tactical problems as he identified them. As a result, until the Russian campaign of 1812 he was able achieve victory by capitalising on his enemies’ mistakes and covering his own. But he was also lucky—for a time—in that he was able to fight each of France’s enemies one-by-one, and thus with equal or greater numbers. After 1812 he found himself fighting against all of Europe at once as well as fighting against more competent enemy commanders than had previously been the case, and his luck ran out. No amount of scrambling could then save Napoleon from defeat.

The key role Napoleon’s corps commanders played in contributing to French victories or defeats is also a core theme of the book. Prominent examples Connelly discusses include the Battles of Marengo (14 June 1800) and Jena/Auerstädt (14 October 1806), where Marshals Desaix and Davout respectively were arguably more responsible for the French victory than was Napoleon himself; and the Peninsular War (in Spain from 1808-13), where a series of French commanders mismanaged the campaign over a prolonged period.

In addition to chronicling Napoleon’s campaigns Connelly also touches on his character, revealing him to have been “nothing like the public image he cultivated”. Instead, “the real Napoleon was a loner and a workaholic: hard, cynical, calculating, tireless, and bent on success at any cost” (p. 1). The first chapter elaborates why Napoleon was the man he was by recounting the story of his childhood, upbringing and early military experience. Napoleon’s character and his public persona are occasionally revisited through the rest of the book. The most interesting example of the latter, at least for this reviewer, is a detailed description of how Napoleon’s propaganda changed the popular French understanding of what happened during the Battle of Marengo. Connelly highlights the differences between the actual battle and the subsequent accounts given by the French Depot de la Guerre on Napoleon’s orders. This discussion also provides a very interesting insight into Napoleon’s character (see pp. 64-8). Despite such occasional revisitations, explicit discussion of Napoleon’s character and how it influenced his campaigns remains scant after the first chapter and this aspect of the book is noticeably under-developed.

In terms of design, the book is compact (I was able to easily travel with it in my carry-on luggage) and the use of maps is excellent (the book includes 32 detailed yet easy-to-follow maps of Napoleon’s campaigns and major battles). Although a comprehensive source list is included (one must note that the included sources are almost exclusively secondary) there is no in-text referencing. This makes it difficult to pinpoint which source Connelly is referring to and when, something that is especially evident in the case of quotes. This aspect of the book could be frustrating at times.

Overall this book provides a very well written, accessible account that successfully challenges the conventional history of Napoleon’s campaigns, wherein he tends to be portrayed as a tactical and strategic genius. He was neither of these things, as Connelly expertly establishes, but there is still much to be learned from his campaigns. These lessons are also concisely captured in this book and for that reason I recommend it to anyone seeking to know more about Napoleon’s military campaigns.

A Special Kind of Genius
By John Matlock
Dr. Connelly sees Napoleon as probably the greatest general of all time, in part because, paradoxically, 'he never really made any plans that he stuck to.'

That lack of planning would appear to be disastrous for anyone else. But for Napoleon it marked him as one of the most remarkable military leaders in history, Connelly said. 'He made plans so that he would have special men and supplies in the right places, but made everything else up as he went along. This equates to genius by him.'

It's considered a truism that 'No plan survives first contact with the enemy (Helmuth von Moltke).' So much so that many military organizations have altered the way they do planning so that they are making no presumptions of what the enemy will do. Get good leaders, get enough men and equipment, get them the food, ammo, etc. they will need, and point them in the right direction.

The interesting point is that Napoleon recognized this so long before von Moltke, Patton, etc.

The book is delightful. It's got a bit of humor, and analyzes Napoleon's battles from a slightly different aspect.

The Search for Beauty in Islam: A Conference of the Books, by Khaled Abou El Fadl

Khaled Abou El Fadl is a classically-trained Islamic jurist, an American lawyer and law professor, and one of the most important Islamic thinkers today. In this updated and expanded edition of The Search for Beauty in Islam, Abou El Fadl offers eye-opening and enlightening insights into the contemporary realities of the current state of Islam and the West. Through a "conference of the books," an imagined conference of Muslim intellects from centuries past, Abou El Fadl examines the ugliness that has come to plague Muslim realities and attempts to reclaim what he maintains is a core moral value in Islam-the value of beauty. Does Islamic law allow, or even call for, the gruesome acts of ugliness that have become so commonly associated with Islam today? Has Islam become a religion devoid of beauty, compassion and love?

Based on actual cases, this book tackles different issues and problems in each chapter through a post-9/11 lens, discussing such topics as marriage, divorce, parental rights, the position of women, the veil, sexual abuse, wife-beating, terrorism, bigotry, morality, law, and the role of tradition. Abou El Fadl argues that the rekindling of the forgotten value of beauty is essential for Muslims today to take back what has been lost to the fundamentalist forces that have denigrated their religion.

Review
El Fadl attempts to offer interpretations that are humanistic and accommodating to modern values, yet simultaneously challenging for traditionalist scholars and preachers. (An-Chi Hoh Dianu The Library Quarterly)

This highly original book is in part a dialogue with Muslim scholars in the past, and, in part, a hymn to an enthralling vision that 'beauty' is to bring life to the truth of the Prophet. The dialogue shows the enormous breadth of [the author's] reading in classic works of learning by Muslims, and his vision suggests a new spiritual esthetic, which is both inspiring and challenging. (Roy Parviz Mottahedeh, Gurney Professor of History, Harvard University)

Khaled Abou El Fadl is emerging as a major Muslim voice for the twenty-first century. Conference of the Books is an excellent introduction to the ideas, insights, and reflections of this important scholar of Islam and Islamic law, author, and poet. (John L. Esposito, Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, Georgetown University)

Dr. Khaled Abou El Fadl, the most important scholar writing on Islamic jurisprudence and its development in the American context today, sets a high standard here for legal discourse and practice among North American Muslims. (Karen Leonard, Professor of Anthropology, University of California, Irvine)

Each independent essay may be read in any order, but collectively they illustrate richness and diversity. (Charles C. Kolb, National Endowment for the Humanities, Religious Studies Review)

A beautiful, enlightening book.
By John Nordin
For those unfamiliar with Isalm, Abou El Fadl cracks open the tradition. You can see Islamic reasoning at work as he compares sources, uses the ancient writers and parses out conclusions. Read especially his deconstruction of alleged authorizations for violence against women in Islam and his defense of the tradition of women scholars. You can also feel his anguish at how much of Islam has turned its back on reason and the core belief that God commands the just and beautiful in favor of a narrow-minded fundamentalism. Christians struggling to defend against Christian fundamentalism will find an ally here.

Even a single chapter on a "fatwa on dogs" shows how real intellectual inquiry operates and how fundamentalists distort it.

And, if you love books, you will rejoice in his loving invocation of the conference of books, the collected wisdom of centuries, that swirl around him each night as he studies. It is a beautiful image, of books talking to each other over the years, and of each of us now joining that conversation as we read and think. My only complaint is that I would wish to have had more of this book: more Islamic analysis of issues.

Abou El Fadl has been accused of being a `sympathizer' of terrorists by Pipes; reading this book will show the total absurdity of that claim since his opposition of extremism is woven into his entire world view.

Recollecting and reviving the beauty of Islam
By Ashik Rabia
This is an exceptional collection of essays articulating a profound mixture of legal and spiritual inquiry. There are 2 ways to experience being human: male and female, and Khaled Abou el Fadl has a remarkable and attentive regard for the female experience. A main theme presented is the necessity for Muslims, especially now, to recollect and find ways to revive and express their legacy of beauty and refinement. This is a book that can be appreciated by thoughtful people of any faith perspective.

This book will change your whole perspective on Islam
By Allegra
This is the most beautiful, moving and life-changing book. It will open your eyes to an Islam that you have not seen anywhere else. It defies the ugliness that people associate with Islam today and gives you the substance of what beauty is and is supposed to be in Islam--how to seek it, live it and aspire to it.

The Child's Conception of the World: A 20th-Century Classic of Child Psychology, by Jean Piaget

A milestone of child psychology, The Child's Conception of the World explores the ways in which the reasoning powers of young children differ from those of adults. What conceptions of the world does the child naturally form at the different stages of its development? To what extent does the child distinguish the external world from an internal or subjective world and what limits does he or she draw between the self and objective reality? These questions make up the first problem, the child's notion of reality.

A second fundamental problem is the significance of explanations put forward by the child. What use does he or she make of the notions of cause and law? Is the form of explanation presented by the child a new type? These and like questions form the second problem, the child's notion of causality.

Jacques Voneche, Director of the Piaget Archives in Geneva, Switzerland, provides a preface to this classic in which he reveals the provanance of The Child's Conception of the World within the context of Piaget's other work and the then-burgeoning field of developmental psychology.

The developing creating child
By Shalom Freedman
Piaget provides a developmental model of human intelligence. He outlines distinct stages beginning with the sensory- motor stage and shows how in each stages the child integrates what has been previously learned in order to expand and develop his powers. Instead of focusing on 'inherent and deterministic drives, or on archetypal eternal patterns, he focuses on capabilities which emerge through interaction between the changing inner world of the child and the world he meets. Piaget puts emphasis on Mankind as a 'creating and constructing creature'.

His writing is complex and often abstract and difficult. But his ideas have been basic to the whole study of child development.

ANOTHER EXTENSION OF PIAGET'S IDEAS AND RESEARCH
By Steven H Propp
Jean Piaget (1896-1980) was a Swiss developmental psychologist known for his epistemological studies with children. His theory of cognitive development and epistemological view are known as "genetic epistemology". This book continues the research of his earlier books, The Language And Thought Of The Child and Judgement and Reasoning in the Child (Quality Paperback: No. 205).

He states in the Introduction, "The subject of this investigation ... is as follows: What conceptions of the world does the child naturally form at the different stages of its development ... What use does he make of the notions of cause and of law?"

Here are some representative quotations from the book:

"Unfortunately the study of the child raises a much more serious difficulty, that of distinguishing from among the results of the examination the part to be regarded as the child's original contribution and that due to previous adult influences. Put in this form the problem is insoluble." (Pg. 28)
"Since the child does not distinguish the psychical from the physical world, since in the early stages of his development he does not even recognize any definite limits between his self and the external world, it is to be expected that he will regard as living and conscious a large number of objects which are for us inert."
"Such then seems to be the starting-point of the filial emotion---that parents are gods." (Pg. 366)

Embracing Sisterhood: Class, Identity, and Contemporary Black Women, by Katrina Bell McDonald

With this purported new "era of high-profile, mega successful, black women who are changing the face of every major field worldwide" and growing socioeconomic diversity among black women as the backdrop, Embracing Sisterhood seeks to determine where contemporary black women's ideas of black womanhood and sisterhood merge with social class status to shape certain attachments and detachments among them. Similarities as well as variations in how black women of different social backgrounds perceive and live black womanhood are interpreted for a range of social contexts. This book confirms what many of today's African-American women and interested observers have known for some time: Conceptions and experience of black womanhood are quite diverse and appear to have grown more diverse over time. However, the potential for a pervasive and polarizing black "step-sisterhood" is considerably undermined by the passion with which these women cling to the promises of cross-class gender/ethnic "community" and of group determination. Embracing Sisterhood draws its analysis from in-depth interviews with eighty-eight contemporary black women aged 18 to 89 covering a variety of issues prompted by a survey questionnaire capturing various dimensions of gender/ethnic identity and consciousness.

From Publishers Weekly
With straightforward prose, McDonald examines the notion of sisterhood among contemporary African-American women in this rigorous academic study. An associate professor of sociology at Johns Hopkins, McDonald has conducted extensive interviews with more than 80 black women-in their homes, workplaces, local hair salons, restaurants and, occasionally, their cellblocks. As they speak of self, friendship and community, McDonald breaks down their thoughts and attitudes along universal lines, looking to find some common bond among an increasingly diverse population of female African-Americans through consideration of concepts like struggle, authenticity and roots. Though her professorial tone can be dry, McDonald has a breakout chapter in her look at talk-show host and media mogul Oprah Winfrey, who represents not just "the most famous African-American woman the world has known," but also the most heavily scrutinized with regards to race and authenticity, and therefore a fitting cap to her close look at the African-American everywoman.

Review
Embracing Sisterhood utilizes an exhaustive investigation of secondary material in combination with interviews with a diverse group of African American women to explore the impact of a social class schism where images of class discord can mask shared concerns. McDonald's powerful study is important reading for people interested in how social class can shape attachments and detachments within racial ethnic communities. (Elizabeth Higginbotham, University of Delaware, author of Too Much to Ask: Black Women in the Era of Integration)

This book is successful in that it is as 'real' and accessible as it is rigorous. (Audrey Elisa Kerr Women's Review of Books, March/April 2009, Vol 26, No 2)

Embracing Sisterhood is a thought-provoking examination of Black women?s intersecting challenges, tensions, and issues of class in the 21st century. With eloquently simple yet subtlety provocative sophistication, McDonald captures the continuing trials and tribulations for these women in a changing post Civil Rights Era where race is not their only struggle, but part of the nexus of questions and answers associated with gender/ethnic identity consciousness and class.... (Marlese Durr, Wright State University, author of Race, Work, and Family in the Lives of African Americans)

Review
This book captures the cultural and historical essence of European geography. The latest edition uses vivid images and impressive maps to highlight the geographical landscapes and patterns of this region. The authors' approach challenges readers to engage with the dynamic nature of Europe in the global economic and political arenas as well as in its diverse ethnic and social realms. In short, The European Culture Area offers an important critical perspective on the geographic relevance of Europe. (Ann M. Oberhauser, West Virginia University)

The authors have carefully considered the best way to capture the themes so vital to understanding today's Europe. Well organized, approachable, and enlightening. (David H. Kaplan, Kent State University)

The new edition expertly refines Jordan-Bychkov's wonderfully readable approach to the formation of modern Europe. It retains the masterful historical detail and clear cartography that were hallmarks of previous editions. Most importantly, the authors have brought the text up to date by rendering the contemporary forces reshaping Europe―and our means of understanding these changes―in keeping with the cultural-historical approach that students need for understanding the region. (Carl T. Dahlman, Miami University)

I am immensely impressed with The European Culture Area. Much more than a geography textbook, it's become essential background for my teaching on contemporary European politics. Besides offering a highly informative discussion of conventional geography as a non-specialist thinks of it, the book's topical chapters on demography, social and ethnic groups; religion; the European state system; and European integration all are deeply researched and deftly and fairly written. (Ronald Tiersky, Amherst College)

Without any doubt, this is by far the best undergraduate textbook on the geography of Europe on the market. This latest edition of The European Culture Area continues to excel in its thorough historical-geographic topical approach to explain the fundamentals of European geography. At the same time, the book explores the latest developments in Europe and how interactions with other world regions and the global economy have affected these developments. (Petr Pavlinek, University of Nebraska at Omaha)

As globalization expands, more than goods and information are traded between the countries of the world. Hattery, Embrick, and Smith present a collection of essays that explore the ways in which issues of human rights and social inequality are shared globally. The editors focus on the United States' role in contributing to human rights violations both inside and outside its borders. Essays on contemporary issues such as immigration, colonialism, and reparations are used to illustrate how the U.S. and the rest of the world are inextricably linked in their relationships to human rights violations and social inequality. Contributors include Judith Blau, Eduardo Bonilla-Silva, and Joe R. Feagin.

Review
For the past several years, Mark Silk and Andrew Walsh have presided over an ambitious, richly textured study of religion and regional variations in the United States. Their findings, which are nicely distilled in this summary volume, point out the importance of geography and regional cultures in decoding both the nation's religious life and its political behavior. I commend this book to anyone seeking to understand the complex mosaic of religious life in America. (Randall Balmer, Columbia University)

This book not only confirms what we already suspect, but goes much further in detailing regional religious differences and how they influence American politics. For general readers, the message is clear: Beware broad generalizations about religion and politics in the United States. For politicians, preachers, and pundits seeking to mobilize the populace one way or another, the message is crucial: Overlook regional views of religion and of its relation to politics at your peril. (Wade Clark Roof, University of California, Santa Barbara)

With the clarity of its analyses and its demonstration of how important the nation's diverse religious regions are―for social mores, for politics, for religion itself―One Nation, Divisible is a splendid and much-welcomed study. (Mark Noll, University of Notre Dame)

The authors create a most compelling mosaic of this phenomenon through their use of history and personal stories. Excellent notes, bibliography, index. Recommended. (CHOICE, January 2009)

Includes a fascinating final chapter that revisits American history through the prism of regional religious affiliation. This scholarly work will appeal mostly to historians and political scientists, but it will also inform citizens and officials who want to gain insight into the often ignored role of religion in American society. (Foreword Reviews, November 2008)

One Nation, Divisible is a masterful account of the potent nexus of religion and region in the United States. Silk and Walsh offer an insightful retelling of the American national story through the lenses of piety and place. (John C. Green, University of Akron)

It doesn't happen very often but on occasion books surprise and even delight you for their perspicuity, and the persuasive nature of their argument. Mark Silk and Andrew Walsh's One Nation, Divisible: How Regional Religious Differences Shape American Politics does just that. Regional differences in religion and politics matter in America, but showing it and doing it with data, interpretation and occasional pithiness is welcome. I found Silk and Walsh's analysis fresh, unique, and determinative for the case that they make: regional differences matter, both in terms of religious majorities in each region and the unique regional and cultural ecologies.

(Journal for the Scientific Study of Religion)

Mark Silk and Andrew Walsh's excellent One Nation, Divisible presents a valuable corrective should any of us forget the reality and importance of regionalism in American religion or regionalism's consequences for religion and politics and politicians. The authors' regionalist perspective is fascinating, and it is a pleasure to read how fully and skillfully these articulate authors develop this theme in their book. (Robert Booth Fowler, University of Wisconsin, Madison Politics and Religion)

Interesting angle for politics; diverts a bit from the rest of the series
By Joseph Bw Smith
This book is the last publciation in a series titled "Religion by Region." The book in the series on religion in the Pacific Northwest (a.k.a "The None Zone") has been a hot topic of discussion among Mainline Protestants in that region. I have found the books in the series very informative, employing the scholarly work of historians, geographers, sociologists, theologians/social scientists, journalists and people with an artistic background. When I first looked at this text, I was a bit surprised that the primary editor of the series, Mark Silk, turned the interpretation of regional religious differences toward politics--mostly because politics weren't necessarily covered in the individual books about religion in each region. Learning more about Silk's other publications, I'm not so surprised about this turn. This topic is applicable for this election year, which I'm sure will sell a few more books. However, I was looking for a little more interpretation regarding what was broadly learned about the research about regional religious differences from several years of research and writing. The American political application seems timely, but I was hoping that more could be gleaned. I was going to read this book regardless of the angle--the books in the series are valuable teaching and reference tools. One Nation, Divisible is an excellent text, using politics that could bring the concept of regional religious differences to a wider audience. I was hoping for a more broad interpretation of religion by region than merely American politics.

Some nice insights, but too static on geographic divisions
By S. J. Snyder
This book does have some good insights on how religion shapes politics, especially in the "Southern Crossroads" region, being more conservative and more politically active than the Old South. Since the Crossroads is the driver of the modern GOP of the last 15 years, that alone makes this book worth reading.

That said, I have a criticism of the geographic divisions and, if I'm following another person correctly, it applies to this whole series, not just this book.

First, in a couple of cases, divisions should be made within states. Three come immediately to mind.
1. Northern Missouri belongs in the Midwest, not the Crossroads. Its German Catholicism, especially in St. Louis, and its German Lutheranism, just aren't part of the "Crossroads."
1A. Kansas is really becoming a Crossroads state more than a Midwest one.
2. The Boise area and the Panhandle areas of Idaho probably should be carved out of the Mountain West and attached to the Pacific North West.
3. Northern Virginia is really becoming more and more part of the Middle Atlantic and not the South.

As you read this book, or any in this series, I guess, you might have to do some mental filtering for this.

Otherwise, this is a decent book.
