About the Author
David Weiss Halivni is Professor Emeritus of Classical Jewish Civilization at Columbia University. Halivni survived the concentration camps of Auschwitz, Wolfsberg, and Mathausen―his entire family was murdered in the camps. Most widely known for his scholarly commentary on the Talmud, Halivni has also written a series of more general studies of the classic rabbinic literature that remains the foundation for all contemporary forms of Judaism. Rabbi Halivni was awarded The Israel Prize in Talmud, this year. The Israel Prize, the highest honor in Israel, will be awarded on Israel Independence Day, observed this year on May 8. Peter Ochs is professor of Modern Judaic Studies at the University of Virginia.

R Weiss Halivni is a giant; and his effort is certainly worthy of reading and re-reading. His sources are well-chosen, support his positions, and display a wide and deep knowledge of the world of Torah. And with his wealth of Torah knowledge, he surveys the various efforts at reconciling Jewish belief with the horrors of the Shoah. In particular, he outright rejects the notions of punishment - both individual and collective - as having any justification in Jewish law or tradition. And he artfully disassembles the arguments behind the applicability of "hester panim" or the hiding of God's face from Israel as a way of fitting the horror into classic Jewish thought.

But like the explanations of others that he puts back on the shelf, the one he presents so eloquently - the distancing factor with its roots in Kaballah - suffers from its own failing of hubris. We don't know; and it's far too presumptuous for any - even the most scholarly whose lives were directly shaped by the horrors like R Halivni - to present a reason or explanation.

Awesome Book!

This is a great read, either as a textbook in a government and politics class or as a book to inspire and amaze. Dr. Frantzich has meticulously researched the famous and obscure that have taken some bold steps to make a difference and affect real change. After I finished reading it and using it for a college-leve public administration class I am teaching, my husband read it and will use the vingettes to illustrate the government process to his AP government class. I highly recommend it and will use it again in my college classes.

Must reading this election year -- now go vote!

This is a refreshing and inspiring collection of essays about people who refuse to believe "you can't fight city hall." Subtitled "Political activists in a cynical age" it traces the stories of people who used the political system to affect public well-being. Examples include MADD (mothers against drunk driving); Dr. Kristen Zarfos, the breast cancer surgeon whose grass roots efforts stopped "Drive Through Mastectomies;" and Rosa Parks bus segregation protest. I'm famiiliar with Dr. Zarfos story, and this book tells it beautifully. Read this book yourself and give it to anyone who complains about how irrelevant politics has become!

a good but slow read

I purchased this book for a graduate class. It supported what I learned in the class very well. Tucker has a way with words though he can be long winded. He is clear on his biases which I find appealing in a historic writter. It does make you think about how our society came to this state and the toll we are still estracting from it.
If you don't mind how slow it can be to read at times this is a must read for those intrested in enviromental history.

Andrew Rotter’s freshman-friendly twenty-page capsule history of this complex conflict is a godsend to teachers and worth the price of the book all by itself. I didn't think this anthology could get any better, but darned if Rotter hasn't pulled it off.

An Excellent, Balanced, Accessible Account of the War in Vietnam

This is an excellent collection of documents from both sides of the conflict in Vietnam. I had the pleasure of taking a course with Prof. Rotter (the author of this book) in college, and currently use it in my own high school history course on Vietnam. Rotter organizes and introduces documents from different periods in the war and includes accounts from both American and Vietnamese perspectives.

Good variety but needs better choices and editing

I teach a college class on the Vietnam War, and I'm only semi-impressed. The variety is good, but some of the readings are not accessible to students because they're not-particularly-well-selected excerpts from larger works, so context gets lost. It would be helpful if the editor had either been more careful in choosing selections that make sense as units or provided short introductions that clarify the context. For example, the My Lai reading by Bilton and Sim would be great, except it begins in a spot where students have no idea what orders the men have received; beginning about three pages earlier in the book would have made everything crystal clear. In some cases, there are much better and clearer essays available (the one on Laos is particularly messy and confusing). Nor would it hurt if the editor had put more work into providing clarifying footnotes for terminology, though this is more easily remedied when teaching.

Also - though this is a minor point - I find it frustrating that the sources for the selections are only listed at the back of the book, instead of either in the TOC or on the first page of each selection.

I do really like the good selection of interpretations of the war and the fact that it covers the long war and the international context. Small tweaks would make this an excellent selection, but now it's only somewhere between OK and good.

This book was bought for my senior American History course but I started reading because I was curious about the beginning of the Viet Nam war. Excellent writing by a variety of authors. Book is in excellent condition; shipping was quick.

Michael Seth somehow manages to pack an enormous amount of information into his short overview of the Korean peninsula's long history. With a useful glossary and a helpful bibliography, A History of Korea is especially recommended for those without any prior knowledge of Korean history and culture. (Lie, John)

Korean History 101...

Korean pop culture (TV dramas & K-pop) has recently gathered popularity outside of the Korean peninsula. Yet few people know of the vast history of the people who live there which goes back 2 millennium in terms of recorded history.

This book, written by an associate professor of East Asian at James Madison University gives a very in-depth look into Korean history. From the Neolithic period, to The Three Kingdoms Era with the rise of Baekje, Silla & Goguryeo, the latter's name was inherited by the Goryeo Dynasty who would unite the Later Three Kingdoms (Silla, Baekje & Hugoguryeo or Later Goguryeo under one rule & where the English word "Korea" originates. This early history I found to be very interesting, though the book spends less than 80 pages on this time period.

The 2nd part of the book covers the Joseon Dynasty, successor to Goryeo which ruled the peninsula until 1897. There's a lot more info on the lives of not only the rulers during this period but on Korean society as a hole. It was during this period that the Korean alphabet (Hangul) emerged, prior to which Koreans used Hanja (Chinese characters) for documentation. The book also goes into the 35 year period in which Korea was a colony of Japan & how it got slit into 2 countries-mainly to keep the Soviets, which had invaded the land following its declaration of war against Japan near the end of WW II from occupying the whole peninsula, as well as the different paths they took-the North becoming an isolated family ruled dictatorship while the South, which was under military rule & martial law became a true democracy & major economic power house that it is today.

Though it's over 550 pages, this is a page turner filled with valuable info & is well researched. Look no farther if you're looking for a book on Korean history.

A pleasure to read

History is absolutely fascinating when it is well written, this book manages to be engaging, informative and thorough. Reading this will definitely give you a strong grasp of Korean history. Its not ponderous, or rambling, but focused and lively. There is good attention to social history. I read an inordinate amount of history. I'd recommend this, and I even expect to reread it. Very readable, its a good fit for someone who is not a history fan.

that the author spend more time and space on the ancient period to close the gap in the small amount of space awarded to it.

Waldrep concludes by showing how modern day hate crimes continue the lynching tradition, and how the courts and grass-roots groups have continued the tradition of resistance to racial violence.

About the Author
Judith Blau is professor of sociology at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, and president of the US chapter of Sociologists without Borders. She is the author of Architects and Firms, The Shape of Culture, Social Contracts and Economic Markets, and Race in the Schools, editor of The Blackwell Companion to Sociology, and co-editor, with Keri Iyall Smith, of The Public Sociologies Reader. She has published over 75 articles in scholarly journals, and was the president of the Southern Sociological Society.

Alberto Moncada is president of Sociologists without Borders/Sociólogos Sin Fronteras and Vice-President of UNESCO-Valencia He has degrees in law, sociology and education, and is the author of over 30 books in Spanish, including three on Hispanics in the U. S. He is frequently interviewed by the Spanish media.

Ariel (Laura and Alvin Siegal College of Judaic Studies) offers a helpful, readable introduction to the complex, arcane world of kabbalah. Most importantly, the book is an accurate description of its subject (not always true for books on Jewish mysticism). Following a useful review of scholarly views on the nature of mysticism, Ariel presents a brief history of Jewish mysticism from the 6th century BCE and the prophecy of Ezekiel following the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem, to the composition and publication of the most famous work of kabbalah, the Zohar, at the end of the 13th century. Two chapters review the esoteric doctrines of the Zohar, especially the Sefiroth, God's emanated attributes; included is a discussion of the Shekinah, the feminine aspect of the divine. Four additional chapters take up other central topics, such as the meaning of Torah according to the kabbalists, the destiny of one's soul, the mystical meaning of Jewish ritual obligations (mitzvot), the practice of meditation, and the influence of kabbalah in Hasidism. Overall, this is a wide-ranging, thoughtfully constructed, user-friendly introduction to kabbalah. Libraries serving Judaica and religion programs will want to purchase it. . . . Recommended.
