This balanced history offers a concise, readable introduction to Nazi Germany. Combining compelling narrative storytelling with analysis, Joseph Bendersky presents an authoritative survey of the major political, economic, and social factors that powered the rise and fall of the Third Reich.
Now in its third edition, the book incorporates the significant research of recent years. Delving into the complexity of social life within the Nazi state, it also reemphasizes the crucial role played by racial ideology in determining the policies and practices of the Third Reich. Bendersky paints a fascinating picture of how average citizens negotiated their way through both the threatening power behind certain Nazi policies and the strong enticements to acquiesce or collaborate. His classic treatment provides an invaluable overview of a subject that retains its historical significance and contemporary importance.

A Concise History of Nazi Germany is a brief fact-filled short history of the Nazi era by
By C. M Mills
A Concise History of Nazi History by Dr. Joseph W. Bendersky of Virginia Commonwealth University is now in its third edition. The book is a densely paginated 212 page history of the rise and fall of Nazi Germany. The book would best serve as a textbook or supplementary reading for a course in Nazi or European history in the 1933-1945
time period.
The book is divided into several parts exploring aspects of the Nazi rule of Germany:
Part One-The author examines the rise and fall of Weimer Germany in the economically and politcally volatile period following German defeat in World War I. Nazism arose out of a philosophy based on social Darwinism, eugenics and hatred of Soviet Communism. Hiter was a German soldier who was fanatical in his hatred of Jews, Communists, intellectuals and big business. Through political acumen Hitler seied power in January 1933 by becoming German Chancellor under the aged President Paul von Hindenburg. Under Article 48 of the Weimer Republic's Constitution he assumed dictatorial power destroying his enemies through concentration camps, murder and propaganda attacks. Nazi Germany was a police state. Millions supported the Nazis and protest was brutally suppressed by the Hitlerites.
Part Two is a good examination of the mechanics of Hitler's seizure of power in 1929-1934. He arose as a political messiah in a Germany suffering through the Great Depression.
Part Three looks at the organization of the Nazi political state and the reign of repression, terror and antisemitism which were hallmarks of the odious Nazi regime.
Part Four looks at the victories of the German armies at the beginning of World War II and the final total defeat at the hands of the Allied powers. The Germans lost over 6.5 people in the war seeing there country devasted.
German citizens had made the horrible mistake of following an evil man Hitler into the jaws of hell. The Nazis murdered over six million of Europe's eleven million Jews wreaking destruction and death across the European continent.
Following each section of the book Professor Bendersky includes a helpful bibliography for those readers who wish to explore in depth a particular aspect of Nazi Germany.
For someone who has read little about Nazi Germany this little gem of a book is a mine of information presented in a succinctly readable and understandable style. Recommended!

Excellent introduction to 1919-1945 Germany, but weak on the war years (39-45)
By EndSieg
This book is an excellent, almost perfect, starting point for anyone interested in the tumultuous history of Germany between the end of the Great War and the end of WWII.
Bendersky does not start with Hitler's appointment as chancellor in January 1933 but illustrates quite well the events and conditions favoring, and those hindering, that fateful appointment (actually 87 pages or 44% of the book).
He follows with an equally lengthy (86 pages or 44% of the book) explanation of the consolidation of power by the Nazis and especially by Hitler himself over the armed forces or Wehrmacht (for him the economy was not a primary goal but a means, initially relegated to Goering, to a military end), during which he in my opinion downplays the collusion between the German "General Stab" officers and Hitler personally (especially as it pertains to the personal Fuehrer oath introduced on August 2 1934, which was the result of a quid pro quo between Hitler and the army for purging the SA and which could only be legitimized "after" [ it was actually done on that day!] president's Hindenburg death).
Even though Bendersky does not use notes, he attaches selected bibliographies for further reading and investigation corresponding to each chapter. Those are really excellent as they direct the reader towards works of historical quality, although I was surprised to see only secondary sources. But since Bendersky strives to be balanced (for example not accusing the Nazis for the Reichstag fire or accusing the Weimar republic for the 1920s hyperinflation as some, like Weinberg in his World at armsA World at Arms: A Global History of World War II, New Edition, have done), the absence of primary sources is not that surprising since those sources must be considered with great care and criticality (such as the self exculpatory memoirs of Hitler's generals, admirals and Field Marshalls).
I was however disappointed by Bendersky's recounting of the war years 1939-1945 as he only devotes 25 pages or 12% of his book to in effect the whole of World War II. Obviously 25 pages cannot even come close to shed any light on the German politics, economy, tactics and strategies during that mightiest of conflicts or, an always fascinating debate, the role and efficacy of Hitler as CIC of the Wehrmacht and CIC of the Heer (for that one might consult:HITLER AS MILITARY COMMANDER (Pen & Sword Military Classics) ). No need therefore for me to debate this or that point in those few pages. There is here also an interesting bibliographical selection which includes Weinberg, Overy and Bartov but it omits the best recognized authorities in the field such as Glantz, Erickson and Ziemke.
All in all an excellent book: A MUST READ!
I would have rated it 5 stars if Bendersky would have given the same weight to 1939-1945 as he did to 1919-1938.
