Individual chapters offer different assessments. A FUNDAMENTAL GUIDE TO THE SCREENWRITING PROCESS.

For most of us, becoming a successful screenwriter is an uphill struggle. Yet in the beginning I was confident that after reading a number of how-to books I would quickly blaze a trail to screenwriting success. I was The Little Engine That Could. But after writing three screenplays, I found myself no closer to the top of the hill than when I started. My head was a jumbled mess of screenwriting teachers' theories from 12 Steps to 15 Beats, so when I came up with a couple of great characters for my next script, I was no longer sure where to begin. Fortunately, just as with my romantic heroine and her hero, Duncan's book and I found each other at just the right time. When I opened "A Guide to Screenwriting Success" and read the first line of the first chapter, "Where do I start?" I knew I had found the perfect guide.

Duncan takes a very clear and practical approach to teaching the essential and fundamental skills every writer should master on the path to screenwriting success. His book is divided into three sections. The first deals with writing the screenplay, the second with rewriting it, and the third section is on writing for television. In the back of the book you'll find a wonderful appendix that includes specific templates to help you with your writing, as well as a structure analysis of the film Witness.

As I began reading the first section, I soon realized I was being guided step-by-step through the process of writing a screenplay from premise to Fade Out. In fact, this is the first how-to book I've owned that I felt was useful enough to keep open and next to me on my desk as I wrote. While all three sections are full of practical advice and insights, I will comment on the first section in detail as this is the one I used to develop and write the first draft of my screenplay.

Chapter 1 offers helpful tips on how to develop a solid movie premise and includes a listing of sample movie premises as a guide.

Chapter 2 deals with inventing interesting characters and introduces you to "the five points of character arc." Duncan discusses the importance of character biographies and includes his Character Development Template to help get you started.

Chapter 3 teaches you how to craft a strong story, taking into account such things as the central question you want to explore, the Act One metaphor, visual motifs, the protagonist's major moral dilemma, subplots, and runners, to name a few. He includes his very helpful Basic Story Development Template to get you started. Then comes creating your story's synopsis. Here he prompts you with about 15 insightful and story-provoking questions to help get your creative engines revved such as in Act One "what forces the protagonist into a new situation?" and in Act Two "how does he or she fail this time for the first major setback?"

Chapter 4 - to me, this section alone is worth the price of the book. Here he teaches you how to use structure to frame an engaging story. Duncan says that "structure is really just guidelines that help to keep you on the track of good storytelling. It's a way of thinking about your story, not a way of writing it." He discusses various techniques such as linear versus nonlinear storytelling, flashbacks, foreshadowing, and subplot. He includes his Love Story Development Template as a guide to use for plotting your romance, if you chose to include one. Then he gets down to the specifics of what to include in each of the three acts. I found his advice for Act 2 particularly helpful as I tend to lose my momentum here. Duncan shows you how to break Act 2 into four, 15-minute mini-dramas. I found this to be a much more manageable, as well as enjoyable, process for me. He also includes his Story Structure Development Template and shows you an example of one of his own scripts in the template. He also teaches you how to take your story synopsis that you created in Chapter 3 and expand it into a scene outline.

Chapter 5 introduces you to visual descriptions and dialogue. This is where you'll find the technical information such as screenplay formatting and camera directions, how to format a flashback scene, intercutting scenes to create tension and suspense, and finally, the correct use of dialogue to write your scenes.

I am just beginning to rewrite my script following the rewriting process in Part 2. With Duncan's book, I have finally completed a first draft that I am proud of and as I continue to work my way through the process and toward screenwriting success, I can actually see the top of the hill.

Stephen Duncan clearly explains feature structure in an easy-to-understand way. Even better, he demonstrates how to write in each genre. No matter which genre you're writing for, this book clearly outlines the do's and don'ts, and how to build and hold viewer interest through character development. There are many writing exercises to help, and Duncan's conversational tone makes for a very pleasant read. Even better, this book teaches feature AND television writing. Thus far, it's the most best, most concise guide I've read.

I've been a working screenwriter since 1995. I've been produced several times in both film and television. I've also read all the major screenwriting texts on the market, and this is still the best. Most of the books you see on the shelf at Barnes & Noble are written for one reason: to sell more books. But the author's not interested in Saving Cats, nor is he someone who can teach but "cannot write." He knows what he's talking about because he's a produced writer. Duncan succeeded in both film and television, unlike many of his book writing peers. This book is a no bulls*** tutorial in the craft of screenwriting. Written like a textbook, by someone who knows what it's like to teach the craft. Duncan delivers a practical treatise in screenwriting, covering everything from story, character, structure, and dialogue. Simply put, this is the only book you will ever need on the subject.

Black Americans continue to lag behind on many measures of social and economic well-being. Conventional wisdom holds that these inequalities can only be eliminated by eradicating racism and providing well-funded social programs. In Race, Wrongs, and Remedies, Amy L. The evidence overwhelmingly suggests that discrimination against blacks has dramatically abated. Although these maladaptive patterns are largely the outgrowth of past discrimination and oppression, they now largely resist correction by government programs or outside interventions. Wax asserts that the black community must solve these problems from within. Self-help, changed habits, and a new cultural outlook are, in fact, the only effective tactics for eliminating the present vestiges of our nation's racist past.

About the Author
Amy L. Wax is Robert Mundheim Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School, where she teaches courses on procedure, remedies, and social welfare. From 1988 to 1994, she was an Assistant Solicitor General at the U.S. Department of Justice and has argued fifteen cases before the United States Supreme Court. She lives with her husband and three children in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania.

Finally, a refreshingly honest and smart book on race

Much is written about race these days, but little is said. The prevailing discussion about race and social welfare policy has become predictable and an unproductive. Authors focus on blame and how to craft polices to undo the harm of the past. Despite years of mounting evidence that this approach is systematically flawed, the march continues steadfastly on: improvements for racial minorities can only come with additional government policies which must focus on how the dominate culture will cure the ills of minorities.

Professor Wax's contribution is a welcome departure from this mindset. In this book, she provides compelling and thoughtful arguments that the traditional role of social welfare policy is fatally flawed. Some change simply comes from those afflicted by the wrongs and no amount of help from those who inflicted the damage will make things better. As Wax notes in the Pedestrian Parable, at some point, the affliction becomes internal and only those affected can ameliorate the damage. While I'm sure this book will be vilified by some and ignored by many, those who are willing to read it with an open and discerning mind will be the better for it.

A courageous and important book

This is a courageous book. Describing its perspective as `self-help', the author argues that structural, governmental, `external' solutions for inequalities by race have now largely run their course and their returns have diminished significantly. The solutions to inequality now rest with the black community itself. `Hard struggles' remain, but `brick walls' have largely been removed. The principal problems causing the continuing inequalities are behavioral and cultural.

Given the response to arguments along this line from Bill Cosby, Juan Williams, et al., this is not a point of view that is likely to be warmly and enthusiastically embraced. She comes to the argument with a lawyer's perspective, one informed particularly by the laws governing liability and remedies.

Her key insight/example concerns a parable of an injured pedestrian. The pedestrian is hit by a guilty motorist. The motorist is directed to do all in his power to make the injured pedestrian whole. He attempts to do so. However, there are certain things that the injured pedestrian must do for himself. The guilty driver will pay for his medical care, medications and physical therapy, for example, but the injured pedestrian must show up for his appointments, fill and take his prescriptions and perform the exercises required by his physical therapist. In some ways this seems unjust. The motorist was guilty, the pedestrian innocent, but his return to health is dependent on his, not just the motorist's actions.

The author's argument is that this does in fact appear to be unjust, and that we cannot absolve the motorist of guilt. At the same time, the irreducible fact is that in the current (admittedly unfair) circumstance, the pedestrian will not walk again unless and until he takes responsibility for those things which he and only he can do.

The author rehearses some well-known facts: that the black family was stronger prior to the 1960's and that out-of-wedlock births have increased (to the 70% level) at a time when individuals experience less discrimination. She studies test scores and the per-pupil investments in public education (slightly higher now in the largely black community than in the largely white). Her prescriptions are traditional ones: establish stable families, avoid having babies prior to marriage, complete high school and develop characteristics that will help further one's success in school as well as on the job--dependability, tenacity, dedication, and so on.

There are several reasons why the initial reactions to the book have been far less hostile than one might have expected. First, the author is a senior law professor at an ivy league institution. In all that she says she appears to be a serious and fair-minded person who genuinely seeks the end to racial inequalities. The issues at stake are, in many cases, legal ones and she has expertise in this area. Most important, the book is a thoroughgoing, scholarly one. Its relatively brief text is anchored by weighty annotation. Like many social scientists, she feels the need to document nearly every assertion. Of course, in an area as important and controversial as this, one needs to document such assertions. She does so.

This is not to suggest that the book is an unreadable tome. It is not. It is written with lucidity and clarity and it is accessible to any reader interested in the subject. She anticipates the responses of political and community critics and does so generously and politely. She also examines the `deterministic' and reductionist nature of previous arguments based in the social sciences and assesses their usefulness. We have come, she argues, as far as we can with `external' solutions; we now need `internal' ones. This book will now be an important element in any future discussion of race and inequality in America.

Three cheers for Blame the Victim!

Since about 1985 I have held a "blame the victim" attitude towards minority oppression. By this I have never meant in any way that the victims deserve their plight. Far from it: victims are victims and will remain victims until they end their victimization. Rather, I have been arguing that only by banning together in collective struggle can the victimization be defeated, and only the victims have a real interest in ending their own oppression.

Jews, Gypsies and gays were not responsible for being gassed, shot, hanged, and simply kicked to death by Hitler, with the deep appreciation of a large section of the German and surrounding peoples. But they are responsible for making sure this does not happen again. This can happen only if they blame themselves for their near-eradication. Of course, the non-oppressed have a moral obligation for aiding in any way they can the cause of the oppressed. But, the bottom line is people must end their own oppression however they can manage to do so.

In this lucid and hard-hitting essay on the politics of race in the United States, Amy L. Wax, a University of Pennsylvania law professor, makes a completely different argument, coming not from history and collective action, but from tort law. She takes without argument the premise that the position of poor blacks in America is due to a culture of poverty that was foisted upon the urban black community by virtue of centuries of slavery and racial bigotry. I believe that this premise is completely accurate and serves as an auspicious starting point for the analysis. Wax then distinguishes between liability and remedy. While others are liable for the position of poor blacks in America, remedy lies wholly in the hands of the inner-city black community itself.

Her paradigmatic analogy is with a pedestrian crippled after being hit by a car. The driver of the car and the insurance company may be liable, both morally and financially, but the major part of the remedy lies with the pedestrian himself, who will recover the use of his legs only by following a strict and demanding regime of exercise and diet. "accepting a key role for victims does not `blame the victim' because," writes Wax, "it implies no exoneration of the wrongdoer. As the parable of the pedestrian illustrates, relying on victims to heal their own injuries does not mean denying that others have harmed them." (p. 119).

Wax's argument is absolutely brilliant. Staggeringly brilliant. It is certainly a lot better than my argument in silencing the critics who say "your blame the victim argument self-servingly exonerates the perpetrators of oppression." Wax absolutely deep-sixes this (lame) critique. Moreover, she gives absolutely not ground to the "remedial idealism" (p. 107) typical of American sociologists, who make a good living simpering over the indignities of racial injustice. She also has only scorn for the postmodern ideal that all social institutions are "socially constructed" and hence the culture of others cannot be criticized. Wax has no trouble attacking the cultural practices of the ghetto that perpetually ghettoize, and the dimwitted ideas of the postmodernists. She similarly attacks affirmative action and such "double standards" as allowing minorities to join the police force despite their inability to pass the entrance exams.

Wax writes with full authority and clarity, without ever overextending her argument. This is a deeply, deeply persuasive work of historical importance. Of course, it has all been said before (think of the comedian Bill Cosby, and those who have called Al Sharpton and other self-appointed black leaders "professional beggars"). But it has not been said with such clarity and authority. I think Wax goes too far in rejecting help from the outside. People need all the help they can get. It is just that in the end, we stand alone in determining our fate as individuals and as peoples.

About the Author
Robert Perrucci is professor of sociology at Purdue University and president of the Society for the Study of Social Problems. Earl Wysong is professor of sociology at Indiana University Kokomo. He is the author of High Risk and High Stakes: Health Professionals, Policy, and Politics.

Not sure what its trying to accomplish exactly.

Informational enough and does reference some sources that lead me to believe its not as biased as some might make it out to be. However the tone of it does seem to be that of trying to scare people as an exhortation to action, which leads me to regard the book less like a textbook and more like a persuasive work. It left me a little confused as to what the goals of the book were.

Ignore the skeptics...

... this book provides compelling reading.

It's not an easy book by any means; but those reviewers who decry the lack of "facts" would do well to take a second look, since Perucci's analysis of the current US labor market is entirely consistent with recent articles in The Economist (12/29/04) and Business Week (12/01/03), neither of which could be remotely described as bastions of Marxist opinion.

Perucci's point is simple: mobility in the US is in decline, as measured by both income growth and the ability of those below the top 20% to move up in the hierarchy.

Perucci, like Will Hutton and others, sees the US moving towards an aristocracy of inherited wealth, a new "Gilded Age" in which the already-rich get richer still, and the rest are left to pick at the bones.

As for facts, I'll choose to believe the OECD and the Congressional Budget Office, and leave the nay-sayers to find their own facts... if they ever bother to look for them.

His willing relinquishment of military authority in 1783 shocked the world, and set him on a path toward greater political glory as he presided over the Constitutional Convention and then became the first President of the country. Here we see Washington as he stood before and was addressed by the nation—praised by politicians, advised by foreigners, and lionized by citizens. In Washington's own letters and addresses we also glimpse the canny side of Washington, a man who was careful with his public image and was a shrewd gamesman in the political arena. By the time he took presidential office in 1789 few questioned his political acumen and national leaders were dependent on his leadership.

About the Author
John P. Kaminski is the director of The Center for the Study of the American Constitution at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He has written and spoken widely on the Constitution and is past president of The Association for Documentary Editing. Kaminski is the editor of many works, including The Quotable Jefferson, Citizen Paine, and The Documentary History of the Ratification of the Constitution. He lives in Middleton, Wisconsin.

Jill Adair McCaughan received her B.A. in history and English from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and her Ph.D. in communications from Ohio State University. She teaches communication and English courses and lives in Columbus, Ohio.
