Spies, Scandals and Sultans: Istanbul in the Twilight of the Ottoman EmpireFrom Brand: Rowman Littlefield Publishers

Spies, Scandals, and Sultans is the first English translation of a fascinating and acidly critical portrait of the Ottoman capital of Istanbul during the days of the Sultan Abd al-Hamid. This is the first time that the text, written by an Egyptian journalist and politician, has been available since 1896. Originally published as a series of newspaper articles in the mid-1890s, and then as a book entitled Ma Hunalik, the text was ordered to be banned and burned by the Sultan's representatives in Cairo. The ban was carried out, but a few copies survived, one of which has been used for this translation. The text of the Arabic original is prefaced with an extensive introduction in which the author's life is discussed and the highly controversial contents of the book are contextualized and evaluated for their accuracy against other contemporary accounts of life in the Ottoman capital.

Spies, Scandals, and Sultans presents a highly critical view of the Ottoman government in Istanbul during the 1890s, with reference to earlier eras in Ottoman history. It is an Egyptian perspective of the Ottoman administration in one of its most problematic periods and is highly critical of every aspect of life in the capital city―not least, the elaborate spy system. Spies, Scandals, and Sultans takes on the theme of modernization and the role of more traditional values, including Islamic ones, in the process of setting the goals for a modern Middle Eastern state―a process that was to come to fruition after World War One in the creation of the modern state of Turkey.

This first English translation should arouse intense interest among historians of the Ottoman Empire and Egypt, as well as those who study modernization in the Middle East and the status of Islam within both traditional and modernizing societies in the region. Spies, Scandals, and Sultans has a great deal to say about the processes of decline and the causes for it, and the ever increasing role of European nations in the establishment o

Review
This is an extremely important―and exceedingly well-done―translation. The text itself is surprisingly entertaining and even funny in places, as the original author often employs fascinating hearsay anecdotes to help make a point. Allen's introduction masterfully puts the text into context for the non-specialist and successfully explains why, despite the author's biases, the text should be read as more than mere polemic or diatribe. By contextualizing the key players' affiliations and interests in the useful introduction, Allen helps the reader read between the lines of the text. (Christopher Stone, Hunter College, City University of New York)

Spies, Scandals, and Sultans provides a window on to the pomp and opulence of the Ottoman court in its twilight. The introduction is excellent. It outlines the life of the author and situates the serendipitously discovered book that the Ottomans banned, in its time. (Miriam Cooke, Duke University)

In the dark days at the end of the glorious Ottoman Empire, a well-traveled Egyptian observer wrote such a devastating account of the failures of the Ottoman court that his book was condemned to destruction. Fortunately for those interested in the late Ottoman period, at least one copy survived to be rendered into felicitous English by Roger Allen. The text brings the Ottoman court to life before our eyes, through detailed scenes of ceremonies, court sessions, schooling, the interpretation of dreams, and diplomatic audiences. The eunuchs, shaykhs, viziers, slave-girls, judges, military officers, ambassadors, and all ranks of courtiers are described through stories of their political actions and intrigues, with special attention paid to the power struggles intrinsic to an empire under constant threat. Roger Allen has brought forward a treasure of historical and literary import. (Sylvia Wing Onder, Georgetown University)

Roger Allen's translation of Ibrahim Al-Muwaylihi's Ma Hunalik is an important contribution to the field, not least because it is written by a contemporary Egyptian observer whose account corroborates those of both the European observers of the Porte and Turkish critics of the Hamidian regime. Spies, Scandals, and Sultans presents a vivid, amusing if unflattering, and highly critical picture of the Ottoman state apparatus. There is little doubt about where the author stood in relation to the sultan and his entourage but, through the elite network to which he belonged, he made acquaintances at high places and got a good glimpse of how the offices ran at the Palace and the Porte. His laconic, almost taciturn style comes out well in Roger Allen's clear and direct translation, which provides an entertaining read. (Ahmet O. Evin, Sabanci University, Turkey)

Al-Muwaylihi―masterfully translated by Roger Allen―writing as an 'insider' from the Ottoman capital for his readers in Egypt, considers it a duty to criticize the state of affairs to prevent the collapse of the Muslim Empire and the Caliphate. A must-read for all who are studying the Hamidian Period of the Ottoman Empire. (Erika H. Gilson, Princeton University)

Both the introduction and the text show a masterly grasp. Although documentary record and archives provide us with a lot of information about the waning Ottoman empire, Spies, Scandals, and Sultans has the advantage of an imposed vision of a discerning intellectual who was a participant in the cultural phenomenon in Egypt and Turkey, with a shrewd insight and an enormous knowledge. An excellent project. (Muhsin al-Musawi, Columbia University)

Plagues in World History (Exploring World History), by John Aberth

Plagues in World History provides a concise, comparative world history of catastrophic infectious diseases, including plague, smallpox, tuberculosis, cholera, influenza, and AIDS. Geographically, these diseases have spread across the entire globe; temporally, they stretch from the sixth century to the present. John Aberth considers not only the varied impact that disease has had upon human history but also the many ways in which people have been able to influence diseases simply through their cultural attitudes toward them. The author argues that the ability of humans to alter disease, even without the modern wonders of antibiotic drugs and other medical treatments, is an even more crucial lesson to learn now that AIDS, swine flu, multidrug-resistant tuberculosis, and other seemingly incurable illnesses have raged worldwide. Aberth's comparative analysis of how different societies have responded in the past to disease illuminates what cultural approaches have been and may continue to be most effective in combating the plagues of today.

Review
Medieval historian Aberth presents interactions of humans and epidemics in case studies of six infectious diseases: plague, smallpox, tuberculosis, cholera, influenza, and AIDS. He chose these because they have known pathogens, can be fatal, and have had long histories. Not merely narrative or descriptive, his study is an attempt to demonstrate how human reactions and attitudes to these diseases have in turn shaped how they affect human communities. Going beyond an exercise in the social construction of disease, Aberth's historical focus on the interaction of disease and human response leads him to be optimistic about human abilities to adjust to and even neutralize biomedical effects. The longest chapter, on the plague, reflects the author's professional specialty. The second longest chapter is on AIDS; remaining chapters are 9-24 pages. Aberth's detailed attention to Islamic understandings of and reactions to plague is especially welcome. He opens each chapter by describing the disease and its effects, then for each disease develops unique reactions and attitudes as well as points introduced earlier, weaving an overall pattern of human progress and intransigence, of connections made and opportunities missed. Summing Up: Highly recommended. (CHOICE)

The prospect of a slender volume about plagues in world history would certainly be attractive to all those who teach either disease history or world history. Moreover . . . it is an approach that most students would embrace. (Journal of Interdisciplinary History)

John Aberth offers a social interpretation of disease throughout history using a comparative global framework. He has a lively writing style, and each chapter is framed by lucid summary descriptions of disease symptoms, progression, transmission, treatments, and the respective debates. Plagues in World History should be a profitable and successful textbook for undergraduate students and general readers. (Journal of World History)

The author presents an effective case for the diseases he has chosen and provides the reader with current findings that allow for interpretations of disease origins. (The Historian)

John Aberth's admirable work on this topic, Plagues in World History, deserves to be engaged with by anyone who is interested in pandemics throughout time. . . .The reader will be most impressed by the wealth of information about the various pandemics and the efforts by medical researchers to combat them up to today . . . [The author] persues his topic from a remarkably balanced position. . . .Both historians and medical researchers will find this book a fascinating read, an excellent digestion of what we know today about plagues in world history. (The Sixteenth Century Journal)

John Aberth has written a concise book that is both well-informed and clear about contemporary medical understandings of epidemics, and steadily conscious of their broader historical, political, social, and economic contexts. In an age when such epidemics as malaria, tuberculosis, and AIDS affect millions, Aberth's arguments have continuing importance. (J. N. Hays, Loyola University, Chicago)

Seeking understanding of our societies and selves by reading and writing books that omit all mention of the essential fact of wars would strike us as a glaring oversight. Yet our shelves are crammed with books that never mention epidemics, an equally vital force in human history. Plagues in World History is the authoritative and fascinating antidote to that error. (Alfred W. Crosby, University of Texas at Austin)

About the Author
John Aberth holds a PhD in medieval history from the University of Cambridge and is the author of numerous books on disease and the Middle Ages.

Excellent popular work
By Amazing Customer
Well worth reading for anyone interested in history. Highly recommended. Coverage is topical, well related to current trends and issues with relevance to today's decision making considerations. Topics provide useful and thought provoking insight into trends in history that might otherwise seem inexplicable without awareness of the subtle, pervasive and typically unacknowledged reactions to epidemic disease.

incredibly detailed and insightful, but the bias got tiring after a while
By derrick
This book was a wonderful read for someone with a background in both history and biology. I was having a great time with the analysis the author was making in the introduction and the information I was receiving about each of the diseases. And it was great seeing how the different cultures responded to the diseases. This book was incredibly informative and even though it was "heavy reading" it was a joy to read, for the most part. The only thing that was a real drawback here was the bias that the author plainly showed when belittling the views of those who held a Biblical worldview when it came to disease. The author seems to sneer at the notion that any disease could come from the God of the Bible, but when speaking of the religious views of others, like those of the Islamic faith, there is no such condemning tone. The other religions are treated in a strictly academic manner, as is appropriate for a scientific and scholarly work. But for some reason the Judeo-Christian worldview is treated differently by the author, almost as if it was something that was ludicrous for any seriously thinking individual to hold to.
Thankfully that bias is not expressed in too many places in the book and it is a very informative read outside of that. I absolutely loved the introduction and the chapters on plague and smallpox. Good stuff.

Plagues, how various populations have reacted to and dealt with them
By RA98
The author knows a great deal about the epidemiology of various major plagues that have hit mankind over history.
Unlike other sources I have read on the subject, he also knows a lot about how different populations have reacted to and dealt with these plagues.
In the West, we tend to have an assumption that scientific knowledge will dictate our course of action in dealing with an epidemic. This book takes you out of that comfortable assumption.

W.E.B. Du Bois: Toward Agnosticism, 1868-1934, by Brian L. Johnson

Brian L. Johnson's remarkable biography of W.E.B. Du Bois describes the evolution of religious views from Du Bois's birth until his resignation as editor of Crisis magazine in 1934.

W.E.B. Du Bois: Toward Agnosticism, 1868-1934 traces Du Bois's mounting skepticism through his earliest church experiences to his sociological training in Berlin culminating with his writings in Crisis magazine. Johnson argues that despite Du Bois's frequent use of Protestant religious rhetoric, the mature Du Bois was a critic of African American religious organizations and their leaders, and a scientifically oriented agnostic who did not adhere to any religious orthodoxy.

In W.E.B. Du Bois: Toward Agnosticism, Johnson maintains that Du Bois scholars have avoided examining the role of agnosticism in Du Bois' life....Johnson uses many excellent quotations and excerpts from Du Bois' writings to demonstrate Du Bois' agnosticism....this book is a fine introduction to a side of Du Bois that, in Johnson's opinion has been "wholly avoided." BEWARE: Answer Key Is Not Available for Individuals
By Book Maven
If you are an individual who purchases this book, the publisher WILL NOT give you the password that allows you to access the answer keys. Obviously this policy on their part makes it difficult to use the book as a tool for self-learning. There is a dictionary in the back, but it would be so much easier if the publisher recognized that today not everyone who buys this book is in an academic setting. The book, by the way, is terrific.

Samuel Adams: The Life of an American Revolutionary, by John K. Alexander

Samuel Adams: The Life of an American Revolutionary vividly tells the story of a titan of America's greatest generation. Friend and foe alike considered Adams one of the greatest members of the generation that achieved American independence and crafted constitutions that made the ideal of republican government a living reality in the new nation. Adams's role as a major political author and organizer are explored as is his central role in momentous events including the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. The work demonstrates why Thomas Jefferson described Adams as the helmsman of the American Revolution. Adams's career during the war and his involvement in crafting and defending republican constitutions are assessed as are his views on virtue, religion, education, women, and slavery. Following Adams through the 1790s, one sees that he wanted the revolutionary generation to bequeath a land of liberty and equality to the nation's posterity. The personal side of this revolutionary who was renowned for his lack of concern for material things is not neglected. The symbiotic relationship of Samuel and his wife Elizabeth is analyzed. The work demonstrates that Adams's life provides a veritable guide to responsible citizenship and public service in a republic.

Review
Students, scholars, and general readers will welcome this important new study of Samuel Adams. Indeed, this is the best biography yet of the man Jefferson called "the helmsman of the American Revolution." Alexander's extensive research supports his view that Adams, "more than anybody, consistently and ardently worked to convince Americans of the need for independence" and kept the revolutionary movement alive during the critical early 1770s. Alexander (Univ. of Cincinnati) considers Adams the US's first "modern politician" in that he made politics his lifelong occupation, grasped the political power of the media, and linked the towns of Massachusetts through committees of correspondence that ultimately became an effective intercolonial communications network. Adams has been eclipsed in US public memory by more famous founding fathers; many remember him now primarily as the fellow who brewed beer. But Alexander makes the case that Adams was one of the most significant of the country's founders and did as much as anyone to build an American republic dedicated to liberty and equality. This well-written book includes 51 pages of notes and an excellent 19-page bibliography to guide further study. Highly recommended. All university and major public libraries. (CHOICE)

Even for supposedly objective historians, it has often been difficult to remain neutral about Sam Adams. He was an inspiring orator or a demagogue inflaming the mob. He was a brilliant organizer or an unprincipled manipulator. Alexander gratifyingly avoids the pitfalls of easy categorization. Still, in a generally admiring biography, he convincingly asserts two consistent aspects of Adams' career. First, he was a political animal, who felt most alive when organizing, negotiating, and when necessary, compromising to achieve his goals. Second, he was a true revolutionary, who viewed the arena of politics as a means for transforming American society in accordance with republican principles. His hopes extended beyond simple independence from Britain. Within those parameters, Alexander examines Adams' activities during and after the revolution as he dealt with a variety of issues, including slavery, the rights of women, and foreign affairs. Alexander also makes clear that Adams was no austere, cold Robespierre but a man with a vibrant personal life. A well-done re-examination of the life of an American icon. (Booklist)

Extremely thorough. (American History 2011-10-01)

Samuel Adams is the most elusive of the Founding Fathers and, until now, the only one without a first-rate biography. Historian John Alexander, a careful author and meticulous scholar, has solved the matter of a decent life history. In this definitive biography, Alexander not only shows what made Adams tick, but fleshes out his contributions to the American Revolution. Samuel Adams: The Life of an American Revolutionary is the book for those who wish to understand both this extraordinary American Founder and the shadowy contours of the American Revolution. (John Ferling, author of Independence and The Ascent of George Washington)

John Alexander makes the case undeniable: No individual was more central than Samuel Adams to the coming of the Revolution and the effort to sustain republican society and government once independence had been achieved. Engagingly written, Samuel Adams offers a thorough and page-turning account of Adams's life and his remarkable times. (Barbara Clark Smith, author of The Freedoms We Lost: Consent and Resistance in Revolutionary America)

A must-read for anyone interested in the American Revolution
By Christopher Schutzius
This is a fascinating work about the life of America's most underrated-and in my view most admirable-founding father. Unlike the more famous Virginians, Sam Adams was no slave owner. He was a true lover of liberty and equality, and much more; philosopher, historian, politician, and yes, a brewer of ale.
Although this book is a non-fiction work by a professional historian, (John Alexander is the leading expert on Samuel Adams) it is nevertheless accessible and enjoyable to readers like myself, who enjoy a good story and sometimes skip the footnotes. As an amateur historian, and as a voter in elections, one of the tests I apply to both historical figures and political candidates is to ask myself "would I enjoy having a couple of drinks with them?" Both John Alexander and Samuel Adams pass that test with flying colors in this wonderful book.
For anyone interested in the causes of the American Revolution and its' political underpinnings, this is a must-read.

An Amazon treasure, Well Written, Informative
By Arkengareth
I love this book, it is not dry and stuffy as many historical biographies are. This book will be well worth the time and effort you expend reading it. It brings Adams to life, and reminds every American why he is considered one of the Fathers of America. If it weren't for him, we might still be a British colony. Great addition to your kindle library.

"Father of the American Revolution"
By bordererer
This is the most comprehensive recent biography of Samuel Adams, the central figure of the early American Revolution and arguably of the Revolution as a whole. Thomas Jefferson called Samuel Adams the helmsman of the Revolution, and other contemporaries agreed, calling him for example the Father of America.

During the first half of the 19th century Samuel Adams's contributions were considered second only to those of George Washington. His second cousin John Adams (whose political career Samuel Adams helped launch) believed that "without the true character of Samuel Adams, the true history of the American Revolution can never be written." Strangely, this is precisely what many 20th and 21st century historians have attempted -- nevertheless, several recent biographies of Samuel Adams attest that he is being rightly restored to his former renown, something for which all of these biographers are to be applauded.

(I also admire and recommend Ira Stoll's biography of Samuel Adams, which is also well-written and includes some additional interesting materials, but because Alexander's biography is stronger on the historical context, with more detail and covering a broader range, for example in connection with the crucial land bank issue as well as a later controversy involving George Washington, I recommend starting here.)

Alexander's biography is clearly written, thorough, and well-paced, providing a full explanation of Adams's transformative role within his historical context. The book is obviously the work of many, many years of research, contemplation, and close consideration. (It is revised and expanded from the author's earlier biography of the same figure.)

The Revolution began in Boston, where Samuel Adams was the leader of the patriots, tirelessly working to safeguard the liberties of his countrymen. He was also a major figure -- some argue the major figure -- in both Continental Congresses.

An understanding of the life and character of Samuel Adams is essential to and inextricable from an understanding of the early history and founding principles of the United States, and as such this biography is invaluable. In addition it and its subject has much to teach us today as we consider freedom, democracy, and political society in general.

Samuel Adams has left us an astounding legacy -- a true hero of freedom and democracy.

This book provides a concise but comprehensive review of the full range of classic and contemporary theories of crime. With separate chapters on the nature and use of criminological theory as well as theoretical application, the authors render the difficult task of explaining crime more understandable to the introductory student. All of the main theories in criminology are reviewed including classical and rational choice, biological, psychological, and evolutionary, social structural, social process, critical, general, and integrated approaches. Copious examples of the spirit of the theories are supplied, many with a popular culture (e.g., film and music) connection. The highly original final chapter, titled 'Putting Criminological Theory to Work,' provides readers with an integrated theoretical model that students can apply to virtually any type of crime. The book is well suited for use in undergraduate and graduate courses in criminology, criminal justice, and deviance.

This approachable and absorbing book offers a unique window into Japanese culture and language. Highlighting the overlooked world of the "silent majority," the housewives and mothers who are the mainstay of Japanese society, this work tells the stories of ordinary women in their own voices. An annotated translation of a Japanese bestseller, the volume explores the daily communication of Japanese women and what their words tell us about their relationships and lives in a globalized, post-industrial, yet still often male-dominated Japan.

Readers will find that many issues explored here are universal to women everywhere, while others are specific to Japan. With added cultural context and commentary, the book offers a fresh understanding of Japanese society, even for those who have had little exposure to Japan. Students in diverse fields, ranging from anthropology to women's studies and from communications to Asian studies, will find this an insightful and provocative work.

Review
This book is a welcome addition to the growing collection of studies of Japanese women. By relying on detailed presentations of real women in their everyday context introduced in real-life situations, Itoh challenges readers never to generalize about any typical individual fulfilling a social role. . . . Recommended. (CHOICE)

This book offers one of the finest ways to understand the sociological and anthropological conditions of current Japan. The Japanese women's voices are spicy and sharp, while the translation reads as pleasantly and persuasively as the original. This provocative work will interest general readers as well as students in sociology, anthropology, and cultural studies courses. (Seiichi Makino, Princeton University)

Thanks to Adachi and Stanlaw, readers of English can now relish Masako Itoh's popular nonfiction book. Itoh's vignettes and essays explore the politics of gender in contemporary Japan through an illuminating blend of her own thinking intertwined with the words and expressions of everyday women. This delightful translation with its expert cultural commentary skillfully captures the opinionated, outspoken, and provocative rants and worries of Itoh and her companions. (Laura Miller, Loyola University Chicago)

" I'm Married to Your Company! " adds a spin to what I thought about Japan, and made me realize that I really didn't know anything at all. It's empowering to see that women everywhere are wanting change and equal treatment, especially in a country so steeped in tradition. The authors provide humorous and accurate notes and descriptions, making the views and puns of the Japanese more understandable. Overall, the book was interesting and informative and a good read for anyone interested in Japan or gender studies.

Gone with the Glory: The Civil War in Cinema, by Brian Steel Wills

From Birth of a Nation to Cold Mountain, hundreds of directors, actors, and screenwriters have used the Civil War to create compelling cinema. However, each generation of moviemakers has resolved the tug of war between entertainment value and historical accuracy differently. Historian Brian Steel Wills takes readers on a journey through the portrayal of the war in film, exploring what Hollywood got right and wrong, how the films influenced each other, and, ultimately, how the movies reflect America's changing understandings of the conflict and of the nation.

Review

This book is a must-read for those with a penchant for Civil War movies and will be invaluable to instructors wishing to screen films in class. But beware, after reading this book you will likely find yourself in search of some of these titles—and you will no doubt watch with Wills's commentary running through your head.

(Civil War History)

This book is a highly enjoyable read. Brian Wills has a knack with a pen (or keyboard). His knowledge of Civil War film is amazing. If the reader is interested in Civil War films, I highly recommend this volume. (Civil War News)

Brian Wills has approached the American fascination with film entertainment by analyzing the significance of Civil War movies, both old and new. From interpreting historical accuracy to dissecting emotional impact, Wills has probed our obsession with the movies that have shaped our essential views about the past. Here is fine entertainment in itself and also the educational value this superb author intrinsically seeks.

(Wiley Sword, author of Southern Invincibility: A History of the Confederate Heart)

Films are not history, though they often make history. Cinema, like literature, has always been used to demonstrate the attitudes of the present toward the past, and Brian Wills's Gone with the Glory offers a penetrating insight into how twentieth-century filmmakers have chosen to see and present the Civil War to Americans across five generations. If there were an Academy Award for film history, Brian Wills would soon be polishing a little golden statuette. (William C. Davis, History Book Club News, author of Jefferson Davis: The Man and His Hour and Lincoln's Men)

Hollywood has had a long and complex relationship with the American Civil War. From The Birth of a Nation through Glory and Cold Mountain, scores of Civil War-related films have revealed at least as much about the eras in which they were made as about the events and characters they depicted. Brian Wills's excellent treatment, which captures the ebb and flow of cinematic themes and interpretations over the past 90 years, will prove invaluable in helping readers choose which films to watch. (Gary W. Gallagher, author of The Confederate War and Lee and His Generals in War and Memory)

Brian Steel Wills, who knows his movies as well as he knows his history―and loves both―steers us, with his usual style and expertise, through Civil War cinema, old and new―from Birth of a Nation to Gone with the Wind to Gods and Generals. In this delightful change-of-pace book, he expertly, for our benefit, connects what really happened with what Hollywood likes to think could have happened in some of the most stirring moments in Civil War history. (John C. Waugh)

Brian Steel Wills's Gone with the Glory is a perceptive and engrossing examination of Hollywood's treatment of America's greatest saga on the silver screen. From Birth of a Nation to Gods and Generals, Hollywood has produced scores of films on the epic struggle between North and South. A gifted historian and writer, Wills has given us the finest book on a fascinating subject. (Jeffry D. Wert, author of The Sword of Lincoln)

A great read. (Post Library)

Brian S. Wills is a fine scholar and writer. . . . Film and Civil War buffs will enjoy this book as will baby boomers.

(America's Civil War)

Generally, books about Hollywood's treatment of history have been written for either academicians or film buffs, but seldom both. Wills has bridged the gap with his latest work. . . . For anyone interested in starting their own Civil War film library, this book is a must-own.

(Blue & Gray Magazine)

Civil War and Cinema, fact and fiction for history buffs and educators
By S. Lippman
I was introduced to the book through a museum presentation by the author at North Carolina's Museum of the Albemarle. The context was exceptional, as the 2013 exhibition "Real to Reel" was in place on the making Gone With the Wind at the same time. The information in Gone with the Glory is a rare lens to be looking through for any Civil War buff and a resource for educators in an increasingly visual world of teaching and learning. The book opens up ways to use film for conversations on what is accurate and what is not in depictions of the war that, surprising to most, incurred more American losses associated with it than the sum of all other wars with American troop deployments combined, through major US deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Meh, I was a little disappointed in that it didn't contain a lot of behind the scenes type revelations. My expectations were probably too high. It's an ok read IMO. Civil War buffs will like but not love; every day readers will want to pass!

The Origins of the Modern World: A Global and Ecological Narrative from the Fifteenth to the Twenty-first Century, 2nd Edition (World Socia

This clearly written and engrossing book presents a global narrative of the origins of the modern world from 1400 to the present. Unlike most studies, which assume that the "rise of the West" is the story of the coming of the modern world, this history, drawing upon new scholarship on Asia, Africa, and the New World, constructs a story in which those parts of the world play major roles.

Robert B. Marks defines the modern world as one marked by industry, the nation state, interstate warfare, a large and growing gap between the wealthiest and poorest parts of the world, and an escape from "the biological old regime." He explains its origins by emphasizing contingencies (such as the conquest of the New World); the broad comparability of the most advanced regions in China, India, and Europe; the reasons why England was able to escape from common ecological constraints facing all of those regions by the 18th century; and a conjuncture of human and natural forces that solidified a gap between the industrialized and non-industrialized parts of the world.

Now in a new edition that brings the saga of the modern world to the present, the book considers how and why the United States emerged as a world power in the twentieth century and became the sole superpower by the twenty-first century. Once again arguing that the rise of the United States to global hegemon was contingent, not inevitable, Marks also points to the resurgence of Asia and the vastly changed relationship of humans to the environment that may, in the long run, overshadow any political and economic milestones of the past hundred years.

Review
Marks is eminently well-qualified to bring Asia to the front of the story about the origins of the modern world. . . . Inspired mostly through the work of André Gunder Frank and Ken Pomeranz, Marks writes a world history survey that is very useful for locating the place of China and India in the construction of the modern world.
(Adrian Carton Education About Asia)

The Origins of the Modern World aims at the undergraduate student . . . but any teacher who has struggled with the question, 'When did American Civilization begin?' will see other applications. Inexpensive enough to consider as a supplemental reading requirement in a traditional Atlantic History class or even for an American History survey, this well designed textbook will orient students toward broader awareness, both historically and within their own world. (Joe Petrulionis U.S. Intellectual History)

This is a splendid book that . . . brings together the very latest scholarship to provide a highly readable and erudite account of world history over the last half a millennium. . . . I thus thoroughly recommend this book. (James Beattie, University of Waikato New Zealand Journal of Asian Studies)

By far the best of the current world history books on the market. Its main strengths lie in its non-Eurocentric viewpoint, its clear narrative, and its brevity. I would (and have) unreservedly recommended the book to colleagues teaching in the field, as well as to others seeking a quick introduction to the history of the world. (Sarah Kovner, University of Florida)

A lucid, accessible explanation of the interaction of world regions and the construction of globalization. A valuable work for undergraduates. (Martin Anderson, Dominican University)

I love this book―and more importantly, students do as well. Nothing beats it for putting global perspectives on the table in a readable and intelligent way. (Thomas Saylor, Concordia University)

In my world history class from the Mongols to the present, I use The Origins of the Modern World, which students love. They enjoy the brevity of the book, as well as its clear and provocative thesis. It's also nice from a teaching point of view, since Marks uses footnotes and models the sort of writing we expect from students. (Bram Hubbell, Friends Seminary)

I loved reading Marks because it had a clear argument throughout the entire book. It gives you a nice overview of the world history, explaining how and what sort of events led to the industrialization of some nations and how did that affect others. Out of all my compulsory economic history books this was my favorite.

Very good high level overview of history
By Michael J. Scholtes
This book strikes a good balance between readability and comprehensiveness: it is thinner than most history textbooks, and more conceptual than detail-oriented. What I found most interesting was the approach of viewing major trends in history (colonization, trade networks, wars) through the lens of economics. Most history I have read has been more about what happened, and has attempted to explain causes in terms of personality, religion, or culture, but not succeeding very well. Viewing history in terms of economics makes this book more about *why* things happened as they did. I loved that approach. Perhaps some historians (like the authors of the other books) would complain that such an approach is overly simplistic. I would disagree; economics seems to be, to history, what conservation of energy is to physics: a simple concept that shapes everything else.

An Innovative Pedagogical Device!
By Textcontext
Each semester, history instructors must select the required reading materials for the next semester's classes. A conscientious teacher might drown in the many options. There are always new titles to fill the captive demand for required purchases. Increasingly, these options come with new bells, whistles, digitized archival collections, and promises of the latest breaking scholarship. That text over there provides a web based bibliography, this one a helpful and hyperlinked timeline. Over here we have a "pedagogical media system" interfacing with the lecture through PowerPoint slides, and boasting a Pod Cast library for additional streaming course content.

Tending to be an easy "mark" for these techno enhancements, I strive to find new ways to cram more content into any history unit. Yet I have been begging any press that would listen for one simple innovation--a textbook. Unlike most available textbooks though, this one would be interesting. It would lead students toward better study habits, shepherd them into more recent ways of thinking about history, and it would show--by example--how to cite their sources in a scholarly manner. I usually suggest that the press find an author who actually teaches undergraduate students.

Robert B. Marks' _Origins of the Modern World_ answers my pleas. So before I get into the text of the textbook, please indulge this instructor's very quick applause for several important features. First, the book is printed in a clear type intended to be read without a magnifying glass. Second, it uses the same citation style most historians require students to use in term papers. So the smart young student in the Che tee shirt will not be pointing out that the textbook fits the syllabus description of plagiarism. Third, the helpful, web based "Study Guide" is not password protected. Even the students who bought used textbooks (and who does not when they are available?) will have fair access. And the reasonable list price of $21.95 means more students will actually purchase the book. Thank you Rowman & Littlefield!

But these are just the beginning of the reasons to assign this book.

Recent scholars have become less comfortable with narrations of world history written as European (and European-American) interactions with everyone else. (The term "everyone else" here is intended to include most of the people alive at any given time.) Recognizing this, most textbook authors have made symbolic nods toward some of the recent findings of our most innovative global and ecological historians. Too often, however, the typical undergraduate textbook is still arranged around the traditional verses in the "Rise of the West" epic: Egypt, Greece, Rome, Holy Rome, Imperial Nation State, Colonization, and "Western Industrialized Democracy." While this format allows a teacher to end the course on a high note, a patriotic gush just before the evaluation forms are handed around, global history is not the same as the history of American foreign relations. The author of this book reconizes this. Further, recent characterizations of history as interesting but irrelevant stories from the long-gone past do not explain to a nineteen-year-old why the subject is important enough to think about today. The vilification of "presentism" is a serious malpractice of history, which has perhaps more to offer than any field in explaining why things turned out as they have.

But Marks' Origins of the Modern World offers an updated synthesis of recent Global, Ecological, Economic, and Demographic history. A professor teaching undergraduate students, Marks narrates without jargon and he avoids obfuscating tangents into overly theoretical interpretations. The preface opens with the events of September 11, 2001, and his introduction presents a balanced view of the "G7" domination of global trade and international finance. So the question, "why should I--a college student in the twenty-first century--care to read any of this," hovers just above the text in each chapter. After a coherent introduction of about twenty pages, each of the following six chapters gets slightly longer and a bit more focused on finer strata of historical experience. So the book has been designed both to improve a conscientious student's study skills, and to blend nicely into a chronologically presented lecture.

The Origins of the Modern World aims at the undergraduate student in a world history survey course. But any teacher who has struggled with the question, "when did American Civilization begin?" will see other applications. Inexpensive enough to consider as a supplemental reading requirement in a traditional Atlantic History class or even for an American History survey, this well designed textbook will orient students toward broader awareness, both historically and within their own world. And this is exactly what history should do.
