Review
Roger Winter's On Drawing probes the mystery of one of the greatest gifts of humanity, the urge to express oneself through images, in a word an innate need to communicate through design rather than language or sound. The widespread appreciation for the intrinsic quality of cartoons, comics, and on occasion even graffiti and advertising as a form of art underlies Winter's broad understanding of the pervasive role of drawing today. The author's full exposition of drawing's importance as a means of visual expression from prehistoric times to the present, with its proliferation of digital and other media and a nonhierarchical pluralism of competing styles, is as lucid and accessible as it is insightful. Anyone who has ever uttered the word beautiful (or ugly), much less doodled his or her thoughts on a pad of paper, will be enriched by the words of this influential mentor of a generation of leading artists. (Edmund P. Pillsbury, Ph.D., director of the Kimbell Art Museum (1980-98))

About the Author
Roger Winter taught painting and drawing at Southern Methodist University from 1963 to 1989. His past students include nationally recognized artists John Alexander, David Bates, Stephen Mueller, and Robert Yarber. His work has been represented by the Fischbach Gallery in New York City and has been shown at galleries throughout the U.S. as well as being contained in many notable collections. In 2007, Winter received the Legends Award from the Dallas Contemporary Museum of Art which exhibited his works from the past 40 years.

need books for classes asap but haven't shipped yet.
By Susan LaCroix
I ordered this book several days ago with the student two day shipping and the item has not even been shipped yet. I can't just order a book for school and wait several weeks to get it and miss reading the chapters for class. I was NOT notified of any kind of back order or delay. I find this very frustrating when I need to have read several chapters already for class that is TOMORROW. I would love to not leave a review like this but I am not satisfied and am behind in my class now because of this. thank you.

Review
Superbly written, this book unravels the tortured history of Latin American economic development, making it comprehensible and enjoyable reading. Armed with the most current statistics and case studies . . . Franko fairly assesses successes and failures, from the import substitution policy to the state-led development and the 'radical shift' to the neoliberal experiment in the 1990s. . . . Essential. (Richard Salvucci H-Latam)

This book is clearly written and organized. . . . It presents a wealth of detailed and illustrative data with precise definitions. . . . It is one of the best texts on the political economy of Latin America. It clearly presents and discusses the challenges and contradictions of contemporary development models in the region. . . . Highly recommend[ed] . . . for upper level undergraduate courses or graduate level courses on the development of Latin America. (The Latin Americanist)

Franko's book is the most comprehensive book available, while also providing an engaging text for students. It is an excellent stand-alone text for economic novices and a wonderful starting point for more advanced economics students. (Kristina Lybecker, Colorado College)

About the Author
Patrice Franko is Grossman Professor of Economics at Colby College.

A useful textbook.
By Nandt1
This is probably the most useful all-round textbook on Latin American economic challenges currently on the market. An important strength is its comprehensiveness: unlike some alternatives, Franko does not dwell on issues of macroeconomic management to the exclusion of important socioeconomic issues such as education, health, rural development, and inequality. The book is evidently designed to support a one semester course, and could be used for either advanced undergraduates or graduate students.

Franko's text is not without its weaknesses. The updating of macro developments from the first edition was undertaken somewhat randomly. Discussions of different viewpoints on Latin American development issues sometimes make overly schematic use of stock figures ("the structuralist", "the neoliberal") that risk becoming caricatures. There is no discussion of the so-called "Washington Consensus" as a whole (indeed the term does not appear in the index). And Franko discusses the thesis of secular decline in commodity prices in an uncritical manner that suggests she may be unaware of recent more skeptical analyses. This said, the book does not suffer from obvious systematic biases, and makes a good-faith effort to present different viewpoints without forcing them down the reader's throat.

A Completely Finished Puzzle
By A Customer
"The Puzzle of Latin American Economic Development" is, most of all, an incredible clear book. By beggining with a review of the differences between the concepts of economic development and economic growth, Patrice Franko places the study of the Latin American economy in its appropiate framework. The analysis of the historical evolution, while simple, gives a solid overview of many of the roots of the current economic and social problems of the area. Finally, her wide analysis of typical areas of economic development such as agriculture, health and education highlights problems that are sometimes forgotten by the political actors. It is an indispensable book for those who want to get initiated in the fascinating subject of Latin American Economic Development.

Complete overview of Latin American Economy
By adriano911
This book offers a very complete overview of the historical process of Latin American development and provides useful insights when it comes to thinking of the future.
Information is really dense but well organized, and every economic theory that is used (ISI, International monetarism, structuralism, etc.) is well explained and illustrated through its detailed application on different countries throughout Latin America.
But it begins to be somewhat outdated given the fast pace of change in current Latin America

Jews and Muslims in the Arab World: Haunted

Jews and Muslims in the Arab World highlights the effects of historical memory on the Arab-Israel conflict, demonstrating that both Jews and Arabs use stories of distant pasts to create their identities and shape their politics. Whether real or imagined, the past filtered through their collective memories has had and will continue to have enormous influence on how Jews and Arabs perceive themselves and each other. Jews and Muslims in the Arab World describes the ways in which the past is absorbed, internalized, and then processed among Jews and Arabs. The book stresses the importance of historical imagination on the current evolving political cultures, but does not claim that explanations from an ancient past shed light on every aspect of contemporary events.

Review
This impressive book deals with a significant topic that has not been studied before in a methodical and comprehensive manner. This comprehensive and comparative study extensively adds to our understanding of the two communities and their enduring conflict. This book should be read and digested by all those who are interested in these communities and their complex historical clash. (Gabriel (Gabi) Sheffer, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)

This truly wonderful work should be essential reading for any serious scholar in Middle Eastern studies. (Khaleel Mohammed, San Diego State University)

Lassner and Troen have produced nothing less than a definitive prolegomenon to the Arab-Israel conflict and other current conflicts involving Muslims and Jews. They show that historical memory matters a great deal; it is neither irrelevant nor determinative, and not all historical communities are "imagined." Written in an exceptionally reader-friendly style, Jews and Muslims in the Arab World is a unique and riveting narrative, fair to both traditions, that anyone with even a mild interest will have trouble putting down. (Alan Dowty, University of Notre Dame)

A fascinating study of the interface between memory and politics as reflected in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. By providing a refreshing look at the pious myths bedeviling Middle Eastern politics, Lassner and Troen show with meticulous scholarship how both Arab nationalism as well as Zionism re-fashioned ancient traditions to legitimize modern political claims. With critical empathy to both sides, the authors warn against simplistic diplomatic attempts to solve the conflict without taking into account these deeply-held beliefs and traditions. At the same time, they call on both sides to listen to the voice of the Other and realize that history is not a seamless coat, but a multi-faceted mosaic, in which accepting the legitimacy of the other side does not by and in itself undermine one's own narrative. (Shlomo Avineri, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem)

Jews and Muslims in the Arab World shows why the Jewish and Palestinian struggles for self-determination have played such a central role in the history of these two peoples and how that history has provided the resources for both continuing the conflict and changing its configuration. Anyone interested in understanding the antipathy between Israelis and Palestinians and between Jews and Muslims will find no clearer introduction or explanation. (Donna Robinson Divine, Smith College)

This is an eloquent, clear-eyed examination of the way in which the principal parties in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and their partisans have understood, used, and misused history, religion, and collective memory in their perceptions of themselves, their adversaries, and the very essence of their relation. The authors' calm and reasoned voices leave the reader neither naively optimistic nor hopelessly pessimistic. This book ought to be required reading for anyone interested in the contemporary Middle East, and not least among those who should read this wise and informative book are the people of that troubled region themselves. (Norman A. Stillman, University of Oklahoma)

This is a remarkable work of scholarship and a valuable contribution to our understanding of the conflict. (Jewish Book World)

Scholars Jacob Lassner and S. Ilan Troen step forward with a masterly, majestic, original and thought-provoking volume....the authors deserve praise....Never before has the chasm which separates the Muslim world from its rivals been described more eloquently than it is in this book. It can only be hoped that this splendid volume, written by authors with an extraordinary knowledge of Islam and the Arab world, will do much to expose the naivete of those who constantly beat their breat in contrition before those who seek the destruction of the Jewish state. (Israel Journal of Foreign Affairs)

An excellent and unorthodox volume on Israel and the Arabs. This is not just another book on the Arab-Israeli conflict. The authors, whose objective is to reinterpret developments in the Arab-Israeli conflict, go about their corrective task with impressive erudition and forthrightness. The authors have written two books grafted into one, providing a unique culturally informed overview of the Arab-Israeli conflict. They have produced an essential and long overdue complement to existing scholarship on the subject. This is truly an important book. (Asher Susser, Tel Aviv University Journal of Israeli History: Politics, Society, Culture)

About the Author
Jacob Lassner is professor of Jewish civilization in the departments of history and religion at Northwestern University. He is the author of seven books, most recently, The Middle East Remembered: Forged Identities, Competing Narratives, Contested Spaces and numerous articles on Jewish-Muslim relations and Near Eastern History.

S. Ilan Troen is the Karl, Harry, and Helen Stoll Chair in Israel Studies at Brandeis University and the Sam and Anna Lopin Professor in Modern History, emeritus, at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. He is the founding editor of Israel Studies (Indiana University Press), the leading journal in the field, and the author or editor of ten books on American, Jewish and Israeli History. His most recent book is Imagining Zion: Dreams, Designs and Realities in a Century of Jewish Settlement.

A History of Russia and Its Empire: From Mikhail Romanov to Vladimir Putin, by Kees Boterbloem

This clear and focused text provides an introduction to imperial Russian and Soviet history from the crowning of Mikhail Romanov in 1613 to Vladimir Putin’s new term. Through a consistent chronological narrative, Kees Boterbloem considers the political, military, economic, social, religious, and cultural developments and crucial turning points that led Russia from an exotic backwater to superpower stature in the twentieth century. The author assesses the tremendous price paid by those who made Russia and the Soviet Union into such a hegemonic power, both locally and globally. He considers the complex and varied interactions between Russians and non-Russians and investigates the reasons for the remarkable longevity of this last of the colonial powers, whose dependencies were not granted independence until 1991. He explores the ongoing legacies of this fraught decolonization process on the Russian Federation itself and on the other states that succeeded the Soviet Union. The only text designed and written specifically for a one-semester course on this four-hundred-year period, it will appeal to all readers interested in learning more about the history of the people who have inhabited one-sixth of the earth’s landmass for centuries.

Review
Boterbloem provides a succinct introductory survey of Russian history from the foundation of the Romanov Dynasty in 1613 to the beginning of Vladimir Putin's third term as president of the Russian Federation in 2012. The author emphasizes the role of important leaders and the rapid growth of the multiethnic Russian Empire. Boterbloem explores continuity and change from the Russian Empire to the Soviet Union to the Russian Federation, arguing that a general absence of a rule of law or a frequent ignoring of existing laws by leaders and commoners alike was a similar phenomenon in all three states. The work is quite appropriate for undergraduate courses, especially those seeking to cover Russian and Soviet history in one semester. Most useful for students and instructors are a 20-page time line and lists at the end of each chapter of relevant translated primary source readings, secondary scholarly selections, websites, and films. . . . Summing Up: Recommended. General and undergraduate collections. (CHOICE)

Highly recommended. (Hiroaki Kuromiya, Indiana University)

Kees Boterbloem has produced a long-needed one-volume text on modern Russian history. He expertly intertwines the different strands of Russian history that show how Russia went from relative obscurity to one of the world's superpowers. Dancing in Shadows: Sihanouk, the Khmer Rouge, and the United Nations in Cambodia (Asian Voices), by Benny Widyono

This fascinating book recounts the remarkable tale of a career UN official from Indonesia caught in the turmoil of international and domestic politics swirling around Cambodia during the tumultuous period after the fall of the Khmer Rouge. Writing from his experience first as a member of the UN transitional authority and then as a personal envoy to the UN secretary-general, Benny Widyono re-creates the fierce battles for power centering on King Norodom Sihanouk, the Khmer Rouge, and Prime Minister Hun Sen. A simultaneous insider and outsider, he also untangles the competing and conflicting agendas of the key international players, especially the United States, China, and Vietnam. He argues that great-power geopolitics throughout the Cold War and post–Cold War eras triggered and sustained a tragedy of enormous proportions in Cambodia for decades, ultimately leading to a flawed peace process.

Widyono tells the inside story of the massive UN operation in Cambodia, the largest and most challenging in the organization's history to that time and long considered a model for UN operations elsewhere. He draws not only on his vantage point as part of the UN bureaucracy, but also as a local UN official in the rural Cambodian province of Siem Reap, the site of Angkor Wat. As a fellow Southeast Asian with no geopolitical axe to grind, Widyono was able to win the respect of Cambodians, including the once and future king, Norodom Sihanouk, whose decline after fifty years as his country's leading figure is vividly portrayed. Putting a human face on international operations, this book will be invaluable reading for anyone interested in Southeast Asia, the role of international peacekeeping, and the international response to genocide.

Review
But the story is his own. . . . The book, therefore, 'sounds like Benny,' which is what gives it its bite and originality. . . . He provides here an astute analysis of the actions leading to the brief upheaval that brought about the break-up of the coalition in July 1997. . . . An engrossing read. (Pacific Affairs)

This absorbing memoir [offers] an insightful record of a tumultuous period of Cambodian history in which Widyono was an astute participant-observer. . . . His assessments of personalities and events in this period are often shrewd and persuasive, and buttressed by observations made in the course of later visits to the country. . . . Widyono's writing is brisk, perceptive and accessible. . . . A valuable addition to literature about Cambodia's recent past. (David Chandler, Monash University Phnom Penh Post)

[The author's] fascinating account reveals how he coped with potholed roads, an erratic power supply, political headaches and a deeply flawed UN mandate with considerable humour and rare commitment. . . . The book clarifies the complexities, illusions and realities of power in Cambodia. (South China Morning Post)

Benny Widyono has now performed the invaluable task of setting the record straight by counting the failures as well. (Outlook, Bangkok Post)

These memoirs of a senior UN official recording his years in Cambodia from 1992 to 1997 are not only informative and well researched, but also keenly perceptive and engaging. . . . Benny Widyono's insider account is essential reading for those interested in what really happened in Cambodia during his five turbulent years in that rapidly developing country. (Asian Affairs)

The appearance of a memoir by Indonesian-born U.N. diplomat Benny Widyono is welcome. (CAAI News Media)

This is an important retelling of less-well-known parts of Cambodia's modern history. It is written by an international civil servant who spent five years (1992–97) in the country. . . . The author gives fresh and interesting profiles of leaders, and his account enriches knowledge and understanding of how they sought to achieve success and often failed. Recommended. (CHOICE)

Gripping. . . . [A] political memoir written in engaging prose, Dancing in Shadows offers an insider's view into a critical moment in Cambodia's recent tumultuous history. As such, it is an invaluable resource for all interested observers and students of Cambodia, undergraduate and graduate alike. (Explorations)

Riveting. . . . I could not put it down. It is well written, engaging, and highly informative. I now understand so much more of Cambodia's Cold-War history and how it led to the Killing Fields in which about two million Cambodians perished. . . . Above and beyond being a thought leader and global citizen, Benny has been able to share his gripping life in an exceptional book. I highly recommend it. (Jim Luce The Huffington Post)

Benny Widyono's memoirs from his five years working for the UN in Cambodia provide interesting insight into both the events and personalities at play. . . . His take on events is refreshing. . . . In this eminently readable account, Benny Widyono has done an admirable job of encapsulating his experiences in Cambodia, to the benefit of those who will pick up this book. (Canadian Journal of History)

An engaging read. (South Asia Research)

Scholars can glean many interesting details of the failings of UNTAC from Mr. Widyono's account. (Far Eastern Economic Review)

Dancing in Shadows is a key text for anyone interested in understanding Cambodian politics and would also be useful to anyone with an interest in traditional democracies, UN peacekeeping efforts or elections in post-conflict nations. (Cambridge University Press)

Widyono's book . . . is a vivid autobiographical narrative. . . . Represents valuable contributions to the body of knowledge on post-conflict Cambodia. Both Widyono's and Peou's books dovetail on the general period of governing Cambodia during and after UNTAC, and are important contributions for any scholar interested in the country, peacebuilding, democratization and its discontents. Engrossing. . . . An honest and valuable rendition of five years in Cambodia at a time of maximum democratic hope for the country. (Contemporary Southeast Asia)

Benny Widyono is ideally placed to assess the turbulent events in Cambodia between the UN-sponsored Paris Peace Accords of 1992 and the return to full electoral legitimacy of Hun Sen's Cambodian People's Party-led government in 1998. During most of those years, as personal representative of the UN secretary-general, Widyono was at the center of Cambodia's Machiavellian political scene. (Tony Kevin, Australian ambassador to Cambodia (1994–1997))

Benny Widyono brings us the remarkable inside story of the UNTAC operations in Cambodia after the conclusion of the Paris Peace Agreements, as well as the intrigues, turmoil, and political upheavals of the first years of a reborn Cambodia. This book will be fascinating reading for anyone interested in the often tragic history of Cambodia and the history of big-power intervention in Southeast Asia. (Ali Alatas, former foreign minister of Indonesia and co-chairman of the Paris International Conference on Cambodia)

Benny Widyono has written a lively, sometimes passionate and controversial book from the perspective of a fellow Southeast Asian who was also a senior UN official through Cambodia's crucial post–Cold War years. His account is rich in detail, from scenes of his own life and work in the devastated country to his insider's analyses of its troubled politics. (Barbara Crossette, former New York Times correspondent in Southeast Asia and UN bureau chief)

I did not care much for this book. It was very much a political insider guide to Cambodia in early 1970's, with a focus on the Cambodian political parties that were vying for power. I was hoping for more insight on the Khmer Rouge; philosophy, origins and atrocities during the civil war. This is more of a book on power politics "dancing in the shadows" - if that is what you are looking for.

Benny Widyono's Shadow Dance
By Alvin Lim Cheng Hin
I picked up Benny Widyono's remarkable memoir Dancing in Shadows at Phnom Penh Airport's bookshop and greedily devoured it. During Cambodia's unprecedented occupation by the UN Transitional Authority, Dr. Widyono was appointed shadow governor of Siem Reap province; later he was the UN Secretary-General's personal envoy to Phnom Penh. His account of the tumultuous UNTAC period, and the subsequent power struggle between the rival political players is fascinating precisely given his authoritative insider's perspective, as are his portraits of key Cambodian leaders like Prime Minister Hun Sen, King Norodom Sihanouk and Prince Ranarridh.

Cambodia: Out of the Shadows?
By D. Gordon Longmuir
This is Benny Widyono's engaging memoir of his five years in Cambodia, first as a senior official in the UN Transitional Authority (UNTAC), responsible for the Province of Siem Reap, and later as the Personal Representative of the Secretary General after the new Royal Government was formed. Widyono's analysis of the flawed preparations for Cambodia's first modern elections is fresh and well-documented. Less dramatic, but no less important, was his role, along with the diplomatic corps in Phnom Penh, in monitoring and sometimes influencing the efforts of Cambodia to maintain a fractious coalition -- only to see it come apart in 1997. This is an engrossing read, especially for those who already know a little about Cambodia's recent history. For the beginner, it features an detailed chronology and an excellent bibliography.

The essays written by a host of recognized professionals in Latin America studies focus on rural transformation, underdevelopment, economic restructuring, Pan-American perspectives on governing, economic, and social systems, gender, identity, theology, ecology, globalization and regionalism, and other subjects. Their analysis of such subjects goes beyond causes and consequences. In many ways, their conclusions border on a prophetic view of Latin American's future. This book, while structured for classroom use, is recommended to readers interested in the subject. (Colonial Latin American Historical Review)

Together, all the eleven chapters in this book provide a general comparative framework for a deep analysis of Latin America and the Caribbean, demonstrating that Marxism still stands as a comprehensive and prosperous field for the development of a critical science, in particular if it is based on the integrative concepts of capital, power, and inequality. The multidimensional researches of the historical context and the contemporary structures of capital, power and inequality address an interdisciplinary texture of economic, political, and social changes in Latin America and the Caribbean that converts this must-read book into a valuable source for undergraduate and graduate students as well as for a broader public concerned with this region. (European Review Of Latin American and Caribbean Studies)

The editors of this collection have brought together leading critical scholars with a wealth of experience behind them to provide an up-to-date survey of the main economic, political, and social aspects of contemporary Latin America. Recommended. (Ronaldo Munck, Dublin City University)

Provocative analyses that invert current orthodoxies. Reshapes how we think about social movements, rural societies, working class struggles, and indigenous peoples. (Elizabeth Dore, University of Southampton)

The first edition of Capital, Power, and Inequality in Latin America was prophetic, and this revision is even more important, especially in light of the pace and space of globalization. In the spirit of Andre Gunder Frank, it examines Latin America and globalization: the diverse alliances of women's organizations and the growth of new social movements, political parties, indigenous movements, and environmentalist groups. While it is clearly written and appropriate for undergraduates, its analytical focus will appeal to all scholars. (Pat Lauderdale, Arizona State University)

The Birth of Modern Mexico, 1780-1824 (Latin American Silhouettes)From Brand: Rowman n Littlefield Publishers

The Birth of Modern Mexico, 1780–1824 investigates the roots of the Mexican Independence era from a variety of perspectives. The essays in this volume link the pre-1810 late Bourbon period to the War of Independence (1810–1821), analyze many crucial aspects of the decade of conflict, and illustrate the continuities with the first years of the independent Mexican nation. Christon I. Archer has assembled the most important scholars of the Independence era in Mexican history. Each essay addresses a central theme and brings new perspectives to the topics under consideration. They all contribute to a nuanced view of the period from roughly the 1790s to the 1830s: the different conceptions of legitimacy between the popular masses and the elite; the skill and importance of pro-Spanish propaganda; the process of organizing conspiracies; the survival and thriving of a mercantile family before, during, and after the creation of the republic; the causes of failing mines; the role of religious thought in the supposed secular state; an exhortation to recall the positive contributions of Iturbide; the viceroy's military strategy; and differing conceptions of authority by the legislature and the executive. The authors address the basic issues that are key to students' understanding: Who fought in the Independence movement, why, and where? Yet the cutting-edge interpretations in the essays make the book equally valuable for more advanced study. In addition, information is provided on the major personalities, including Augustín Iturbide, Félix Calleja, and Father Hidalgo, giving The Birth of Modern Mexico a fascinating human dimension. Unlike many edited volumes, the essays in this book offer a seamless approach to the period that underscores new research and innovative ideas that will reinforce the significance of the Independence era. One of the few readable, concise books on the topic of independence, this volume probes the birth of modern Mexico in a crisply written style that is sure to appeal to historians and students of Mexican history.

Review
Christon I. Archer, the volume's editor, provides a lively overview of the independence era in his introductory chapter, emphasizing the multiple fractures of colonial society, enduring conflicts between Mexico City and the regions, the often confused responses of different social groups to events in Europe, and, above all, the colonial elite's altogether pessimistic assessment of the common folk they encountered. (Jennie Purnell, Boston College Latin American Research Review)

A real contribution, The Birth of Modern Mexico will bring scholars and students to engage new complexities in a time of fundamental conflict and transformation. (John Tutino, Georgetown University)

This is an extraordinarily useful book. I am eager to use it in my classes. (Lyman L. Johnson, University of North Carolina at Charlotte)

The Challenge of Pluralism: Church and State in Five Democracies, by Stephen V. Monsma, J. Christophen Soper

Now in a thoroughly revised and updated edition, this essential text offers a rigorous, systematic comparison of church-state relations in the United States, Australia, the Netherlands, Germany, and England. As successful and stable political democracies, these five countries share a commitment to protecting the religious rights of their citizens. Yet as the book demonstrates, each has taken substantially different approaches to resolving basic church-state questions. Stephen V. Monsma and J. Christopher Soper examine the historical roots of those differences and explain how each state addresses contemporary church-state issues. The authors judge each government's success in protecting the religious rights of its citizens using a framework based on the ideal of governmental neutrality or evenhandedness toward people of all faiths and of none.

Providing clarity on the little-understood, evolving relationship between church and state in the West, this book provides an invaluable comparative analysis of a topic that is increasingly a source of profound political and social conflict. Monsma and Soper conclude that the American conception of church-state separation, with its traditional emphasis on avoiding government establishment of religion, actually discriminates against religious groups by denying access to government services provided to other organizations. The authors persuasively argue that the United States can learn a great deal from other Western nations in promoting religious neutrality and the free exercise of religion.

Review
Readers of Pro Rege may be surprised to find such insightful and articulate authors writing to such a broad audience with pleasingly familiar insights and arguments. . . . The authors are to be commended for articulating an orthodox Reformed vision of justice for a broken world, and doing so within the parameters of inferences based upon comparative research. . . . Without burdening the text with Reformed terminology, Monsma and Soper have seriously challenged governing elites and their intellectual supporters to actually redeem fallen and sinful structures of contemporary democratic governments. This is exemplary reformational scholarship. (Jack R. Van Der Slik Pro Rege)

One of my favorite books on religion in public life. On a subject especially in need of light, insight, and balance, its very readable historical, legal, and comparative analyses are most enlightening and fair. I recommend it for college classes and as good reading for ordinary citizens. (Christian Smith, director, Center for the Study of Religion and Society, University of Notre Dame)

About the Author
Stephen V. Monsma is research fellow in the Paul Henry Institute at Calvin College and emeritus professor of political science at Pepperdine University. J. Christopher Soper is Blanche E. Seaver Professor of Political Science at Pepperdine University.

Transcending liberalist ideology: the church-state case
By A Customer
I give this book more exactly 4,5 stars. I am glad I acquired the book and included it in my personal library of political science. The authors build on a solid framework of different church-state regimes. They analyse neither too many nor two few countries. However, extension by others to cover more countries would be welcome. One can also ask if a similar approach could not be used for studying relations of the state to other organisations than churches. In all cases, the hypothesis is that explicit separation of the state from certain values leads to implicit support to those who are the strongest in pushing the values of their own.
