Applying Social Statistics: An Introduction to Quantitative Reasoning in Sociology, by Jay Alan Weinstein

While Applying Social Statistics is 'about' social statistics and includes all of the topics generally covered in similar texts, it is first and foremost a book about how sociologists use statistics. Its emphasis is on statistical reasoning in sociology and on showing how these principles can be applied to numerous problems in a wide variety of contexts; to answer effectively the question 'what's it for.' A main learning objective is to help students understand how and why social statistics is used. Yet, Weinstein's style and substance recognize that it is of equal-or even greater-importance that they begin to learn how to apply these principles and techniques themselves.

Review
Unlike most statistics textbooks, this text has 'Solution Centered Applications' of statistics as central components, helping students understand how statistics can be applied to real-life problems. The author's ability to explain even complex issues in a straightforward manner makes this text perfect for students new to (and afraid of) statistics and is equally useful for those needing a refresher. (Dr. E. Andreas Tomaszewski)

Weinstein uses his passion for statistics and applied sociology to turn the natural anxiety of most elementary statistics students into enthusiasm for quantitative reasoning. The narrative is coherent and the material is presented cumulatively; ideas that are introduced early in the text are revisited in later sections. The writing style is clear and student-friendly, and every major topic is illustrated with examples, tables, and figures. Every formula and equation is carefully explained. This book will fill an existing gap in current texts dealing with applied social statistics. (Raouf Hanna)

About the Author
Jay Weinstein is professor of sociology at Eastern Michigan University. A former president of the Society for Applied Sociology, he is the author of a number of articles and books, including Social Change: Third Edition.

Between the Middle Ages and Modernity: Individual and Community in the Early Modern WorldFrom Rowman & Littlefield Publishers

This groundbreaking book examines the complex relationships between individuals and communities during the profound transitions of the early modern period. Historians have traditionally identified the origins of a modern individualist spirit in the European Renaissance and Reformation. Yet since the 1960s, evolving scholarship has challenged this perspective by calling into question its basic assumptions about individualism, its exclusive focus on elite individuals, and its inherent Eurocentric bias. Arguing that individual identity drew from traditional forms of community, these essays by leading scholars convincingly show that individual and community created and recreated one another in the major structures, interactions, and transitions of early modern times. The authors contend that on the one hand, communities provided the stability that allowed for individual agency, even as they imposed new forms of discipline that confined individuals to more rigid moral and social norms. On the other hand, individuals established forms of association to advance their own economic, social, political, and religious agendas. Offering an important contribution to our understanding both of the early modern period and of its historiography, this volume will be an invaluable resource for scholars working in the fields of medieval, early modern, and modern history, and on the Renaissance and Reformation.

Review
Parker and Bentley have done a nice job of pulling together a wide range of topics in these 16 essays, which make the case for the early modern world as a field of historical studies. . . . This collection is a significant contribution to the study of early modernity. Highly recommended. (CHOICE)

The editors selected a program of . . . broad relevance to the early modern subfield, one that successfully accommodates both methodological reflections and more empirical studies. (Sixteenth Century Journal)

This excellent volume powerfully makes the case for Early Modernity as a field of historical studies, doing so specifically from the perspective of the ‘new social history.' It is impressive both in its insistence on bringing the ‘structures of everyday life' to the fore and its vigour in moving away from eurocentrism. (Jonathan Israel, Institute for Advanced Study)

A fine volume that will contribute significantly to understanding of both the early modern period and its historiography. At the cutting edge of historical scholarship, it is particularly illuminating in combining European with non-European histories and exploring interactions between cultures and continents. (Anthony Black, University of Dundee)

Progressive & Religious: How Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Buddhist Leaders are Moving Beyond the Culture Wars and Transforming American P

In recent years, Americans have become frustrated with the troubled relationship between religion and politics: an exclusive claim on faith and values from the right and a radical divorce of faith from politics on the left. Now a new generation of religious leaders is re-envisioning religion in public life, leading grassroots movements to go beyond partisan politics to work for a more just and inclusive society. Progressive & Religious tells the dynamic stories of these leaders.

Through nearly 100 in-depth interviews with Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Buddhist leaders, this book explains how they are tapping the deep connections between religion and social justice to work on issues like poverty and worker's rights, the environment, health care, pluralism, and human rights. Interviewees include David Saperstein, Michael Lerner, Jim Wallis, Brian McLaren, Feisal Abdul Rauf, Eboo Patel, Kecia Ali, Lama Surya Das, Robert Thurman, and E. J. Dionne.

From Publishers Weekly
Much attention has been paid to the role of the religious right in American politics, but this work offers an account of religious progressives who are seeking to make their own impact on public life. Jones, a scholar at the Center for American Progress, interviewed nearly 100 leaders from the four religious groups enumerated in the subtitle and discovered a diverse and vibrant community committed to issues like social justice, inclusion and economic fairness-a pluralistic hodgepodge Jones describes as "the other religious America." The author briefly depicts the long history of religious progressivism in America, but his book concentrates on contemporary activists, such as Jewish Funds for Justice or the Buddhist Peace Fellowship. Each faith has its own distinctive theological basis for its progressive politics, yet Jones also shows common characteristics, including a relational approach to truth and a belief in the unity of all humanity. This book will cheer religious progressives who believe their voices are underrepresented in the current conversation about faith and politics in America.

Review
By seeking out and presenting American opinion leaders who are committed to human rights and social justice from their respective religious perspectives, Progressive & Religious is particularly timely in these perilous times of polarization and social regression among religious communities. A pioneering initiative for social change. (Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im, Emory University School of Law)

Through his work with Third Way, Robert Jones has been working hard to heal religious fractures, bringing together political progressives and conservative Christians so they stop culture warfare and start behaving more Christianly toward one another, collaborating for the common good. In Progressive & Religious, he engenders hope for a new day by identifying the growing chorus of voices seeking―in the words of the Hebrew prophets―to beat swords into plowshares and spears into pruning hooks. (Brian McLaren, speaker, pastor, and author of The Road We Make by Walking)

No one who reads this book will end up doubting the breadth and depth of commitment to progressive visions that are deeply rooted in the wisdoms of the whole spectrum of American religious life; and everyone who reads it will end up knowing a great deal more about both progressive thought and religious life. Hallelu-yah! (Rabbi Arthur Waskow, director, The Shalom Center; author, Down-to-Earth Judaism)

Let's face it: Jesus was a rabble-rouser. The Hebrew prophets castigated the rich. Muhammad challenged Arabian elites. The Buddha opposed the status quo. By insisting that social injustices and not just personal moral infractions are matters of concern for any religiously grounded ethics, the people and organizations profiled in Robert Jones's Progressive & Religious are challenging dominant visions of religious activism as inherently conservative. It's about time. (Kecia Ali, Boston University)

This is an important book. Robert Jones's Progressive & Religious refutes the falsehood that only conservative evangelicals are seriously religious. It gives a vibrant picture of how American Jews, Christians, Muslims, and Buddhists are uniting deep religious faith and engagement in social justice. (Rosemary Radford Ruether, Claremont School of Theology)

This is an exceptional book. It is both a window into a post-Religious Right America, and an invitation to people from all faith backgrounds and none at all to build what Robert Jones calls ‘a land of new possibilities.' (Eboo Patel, Interfaith Youth Core, author of Acts of Faith)

Progressive & Religious takes a unique look at the political views of Christian, Jewish, Muslim, and Buddhist leaders, and offers an insightful analysis of their diverse perspectives. Any one who cares about the future of American faith-based politics will profit from this excellent book. (John C. Green, University of Akron, Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life)

Progressive & Religious finally puts to rest the myth that one cannot be both religious and politically progressive. This book makes a major contribution to our understanding of religion in public life by highlighting the deep, authentic connections that exist between progressive religious belief and practice on the one hand and a commitment to a politics of the common good on the other. (Rev. Jennifer Butler, Faith and Public Life, author of Born Again)

An illuminating road map to religious re-discovery in contemporary America. With a marriage of journalistic enthusiasm and intellectual rigor, Robert P. Jones skips among the tensions that mar intra-religious relations in our society, smashing erroneous preconceptions and championing a renaissance in the way we look at faith. The result is a thorough examination of religion in modernity that highlights the progressive tendencies shared by ALL faiths in highly readable form. (Imam Feisal Rauf, American Society for Muslim Advancement)

This book is long overdue. Progressive & Religious tells the inspiring story of leaders who are declaring that religion is not simply about personal holiness, but also about public holiness. My hope is that the many religious Americans who recognize their own religious convictions in these pages and become part of this new face of public religion that brings people together and calls for justice for all. (Rev. Leah Daughtry, Democratic National Committee)

Robert P. Jones has put together an instructive analytic survey of the progressive religious movements in the U.S. that should be in front of every newspaper journalist and every spiritual progressive. Sensitive to theological as well as political concerns, Jones has provided a valuable introduction to the contemporary struggle for a progressive spiritual transformation of the world that is taking place in most of the world's religions. (Rabbi Michael Lerner, Tikkun Magazine, The Network of Spiritual Progressives)

In a world plagued by religiously motivated violence, anyone who wishes to become part of the solution and not part of the problem must read Robert Jones' book. Wonderfully written and an enjoyable read, this is a timely, insightful, and critically important book. It should be read and carefully pondered, not only by every Jew, Christian, and Muslim, but by every person who cares about the fate of humanity. (Khaled Abou el Fadl, UCLA School of Law, author of The Great Theft)

Robert Jones understands that progressive faith is not simply a 'left' alternative to the Religious Right, but a bringing together of religious belief and practice with progressive politics. Progressive & Religious convincingly shows how people of many different faiths are creating an authentic social vision for a pluralistic America. I commend this book to all who are seeking to join their faith and politics in working for a better world. (Rev. Jim Wallis, Sojourners, author of The Great Awakening)

Throughout American history, religious voices have played a central role in progressive politics, but we seem to have forgotten that in the last two decades. Robert Jones is one of the most searching, thoughtful, and practical thinkers in the revival of religiously-rooted progressivism, and his book is a great blessing for that cause and for the country. Anyone-left, right or center-who wants a guide to this new movement would do well to spend time with this book. (E. J. Dionne Jr., The Washington Post; author of Souled Out)

Robert Jones has made a significant contribution to the fields of contemporary religious and political studies. In sharing the stories of progressive faith leaders from several different traditions he has helped all of us better understand our commonalities and differences, and the possibility of working together for the common good. (Rabbi Or N. Rose, The Rabbinical School of Hebrew College, author of Righteous Indignation)

This important book is a compelling rebuttal to the widespread bias in our society that the more fundamentalist religious people are, the more authentic they are. Progressive & Religious powerfully reminds us that working as God's partners to heal the world is a profoundly religious task that stands in the mainstream of our religious ethical traditions. (Rabbi David Saperstein, Religious Action Center for Reform Judaism)

Progressive & Religious tells the story of a shared journey toward social holiness. These progressive faith leaders―Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Buddhist―demonstrate a kind of militant tolerance and a passion for healing the world. We religious progressives are finding our voices and testifying to this truth: God loves this world and all that is within it. And we are asking you to do the same. (Rev. Dr. Susan Brooks Thistlethwaite, Chicago Theological Seminary)

Much attention has been paid to the role of the religious right in American politics, but this work offers an account of religious progressives who are seeking to make their own impact on public life. . . . Each faith has its own distinctive theological basis for its progressive politics, yet Jones also shows common characteristics, including a relational approach to truth and a belief in the unity of all humanity. Robert P. Jones beautifully chronicles progressive applications of religion to public life
By T. Krattenmaker
It's gratifying to think of how much has changed since 2004, when publicly applied religion seemed to belong solely to conservatives. In this expertly researched and written book, Robert P. Jones beautifully chronicles how religious progressives are re-asserting themselves in the public square and showing an idealistic face of faith that seemed all but lost in the Bush years.

Can Religion Really Be Progressive?
By Chelle K
When people usually think about the mixing of religion and politics, they jump to the idea of the Christian Right, which is one of the most vocal religious groups (if you can call it a group) involved in politics. They also have a huge outreach. For instance, Focus on the Family in Colorado Springs sends out ten monthly magazines to a combined 2.3 million subscribers. James Dobson, the founder of the organization, maintains several other organizations as well that had a combined revenue of $162 million in 2005.

Who would think, then, that there was a religious left, then, with this strong influence of the religious right? Robert P. Jones looked into the phenomenon of religious organizations actually leaning to the left, or simply working towards progress. He outlines many of these organizations, and the religions they belong to, in his book Progressive and Religious.

In this book, he recounts his interviews with many religious leaders that are working towards progress. He recounts how many of them have had issues with the left's insistence that religion be left behind or be kept hidden as the reason of participating in progress. He explains how each of the major religious traditions (Christianity, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism) looks at social progress on the large scale, often because of their religious teachings. After all, he says, Martin Luther King, Jr "was first of all Rev. King, a Baptist minister who skillfully wove biblical lines about "justice rolling down like waters" and "righteousness as a mighty stream" into a new American dream that moved huge segments of our nation to action."

It is certainly an interesting book to read. I know I learned to see many of the similarities between the religious because of their mutual desire to better the world. It also shows how many religious individuals are getting involved in politics because of this desire.

However, the way the book is set up makes it rather difficult to read through quickly. Jones jumps around from interview to interview, offering a small bit of dry commentary between. While its fairly easy to get the basic idea of the test while skimming through it, it is also very easy for your mind to wander while reading it (at least, it was for me). The writing is not very engaging, and only interest in the various religions kept me reading the book.

I give it 3.5 of 5 stars.

The Hidden People of North Korea: Everyday Life in the Hermit Kingdom, by Ralph Hassig, Kongdan Oh

This unique book provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of life in North Korea today. Drawing on decades of experience, noted experts Ralph Hassig and Kongdan Oh explore a world few outsiders can imagine. In vivid detail, the authors describe how the secretive and authoritarian government of Kim Jong-il shapes every aspect of its citizens' lives, how the command socialist economy has utterly failed, and how ordinary individuals struggle to survive through small-scale capitalism. Weighing the very limited individual rights allowed, the authors illustrate how the political class system and the legal system serve solely as tools of the regime.

The key to understanding how the North Korean people live, the authors argue, is to realize that their only allowed role is to support Kim Jong-il, whose father founded the country in the late 1940s. An intelligent and experienced dictator, Kim controls his people by keeping them isolated and banning most foreigners. This control has loosened slightly since the late 1990s, but North Koreans remain hungry and oppressed. Yet the outside world is slowly filtering in, and the book concludes by urging the United States to flood North Korea with information so that its people can make decisions based on truth rather than their dictator's ubiquitous propaganda.

From Publishers Weekly
In this state survey, scholars Oh (whose parents fled North Korea) and Hassig (Oh's American-born husband), gather behind-the-curtain research to expose day-to-day life, and the powers that control it, in North Korea, a developed nation where meat is a luxury and the Internet doesn't exist for anyone but the dictator. Examining the history and present of the regime, the authors (2000's North Korea through the Looking Glass) provide a lucid guide to the mechanics by which Kim Jong Il's Soviet-style socialist totalitarianism has endured into this century. Much of their information has been available before (in their own work, David Hawk's comprehensive The Hidden Gulag, and elsewhere), but serious scholars of the region will find some new information, including the details of North Korea's transnational economy. The uninformed will find much that's fascinating and shocking: a nation of castes and concentration camps, replete with a politics of fear that rivals the worst Orwell could imagine. Though some topics are underreported-including the state ideology (religion by another name), Juche theory-Hassig and Oh provide a valuable catalog of oppression so deep that a hopeful conclusion-that Jong Il's regime is ultimately unsustainable-won't ameliorate the feeling of unease.

Review
And if you really wonder what life is like under Dear Leader, the team of Kongdan 'Katy' Oh and Ralph Hassig have produced the definitive work to date. (The Nelson Report)

An extraordinarily penetrating look behind the walls of North Korea's secretive society by two renowned specialists who identify the cracks developing in the ideological, economic, and political foundations of this totalitarian system. (Cohen, Roberta)

Kongdan Oh and Ralph Hassig—analysts of unique experience and depth—look behind North Korea's bluster, blasts, and missiles to the eroding country they hide. The authors shine a light on the country's people—from dictator Kim Jong-il and his privileged inner circle to the millions of Koreans who struggle through desperate lives of hunger, want, and fear. That this system has changed in recent years makes the book especially timely and invaluable for making sense of an inflammatory and unpredictable rogue state. (James A. Kelly)

Ralph Hassig and Kongdan Oh have opened a peephole through the locked door that is North Korea. They draw on their deep knowledge of the country and extensive interviewing of refugees to provide a rich and textured picture of the life of a people who are victims of their leaders’ megalomania. New insights and information spring from every page. (Bush, Richard C.)

As often as North Korea is in the news, we have little reliable information about what life is actually like in this 'hermit kingdom,' and that’s no accident. Husband-and-wife Korea experts Hassig and Oh begin this illuminating national portrait with a quote from its leader, Kim Jong-il: 'We must envelop our environment in a dense fog to prevent our enemies from learning anything about us.' . . . Hassig and Oh provide chilling information and haunting photographs that starkly delineate the crisis state of North Korea’s economy, agriculture, and health care; the abundance of political prisons; and the tyranny of perpetual surveillance. (Booklist)

A must-read for serious students of North Korea. The wealth of information peels back layers of mystique to provide a genuinely understandable glimpse of the inner workings of Kim Jong-il's North Korea. The chapter on the Kim family is absolutely essential to understanding why North Korea is the unique nation that it is. It should be required reading for American policymakers. (Ambassador Jack Pritchard)

Examining the history and present of the regime, the authors provide a lucid guide to the mechanics by which Kim Jong Il’s Soviet-style socialist totalitarianism has endured into this century. . . . [Readers] will find much that’s fascinating and shocking: a nation of castes and concentration camps, replete with a politics of fear that rivals the worst Orwell could imagine. . . . Hassig and Oh provide a valuable catalog of oppression. (Publishers Weekly)

It's particularly welcome then that Ralph Hassig and Kongdan Oh . . . have tried to penetrate [the North Korean government’s] fog to examine the daily lives of 23 million souls. . . . [The authors] provide a fascinating account of the political forces that have shaped the barriers between the Hermit Kingdom and the rest of the world. . . . It's in these tales of everyday life that the book makes its greatest contribution. . . . The North Korean people, long denied any voice in their society, will decide the fate of the nation, and as this book convincingly shows in preceding pages, they have finally turned their back on the regime. (Wall Street Journal)

Revealing the haunting details of daily life in an authoritarian state, the authors boldly declare that the current regime is unraveling despite its feverish attempts to hold on to power; even sprouts of capitalism are appearing in North Korean society. . . . Western readers will gain a rare view of the hidden world of North Korean citizens. Recommended for those interested in international affairs or inquisitive about this last remnant of the Communist world. (Library Journal)

Mr. Hassig and Ms. Oh’s portrait of Mr. Kim’s hyper-sybaritic lifestyle is detailed and devastating. (The New York Times)

Hassig and Oh . . . offer a detailed picture of the lives of Kim Jong Il and the members of his entourage and a study of why and how defectors break for the outside. [They] show that the regime is under stress, but they also reveal the mechanisms by which, for the time being, it is holding tight. (Foreign Affairs)

In The Hidden People of North Korea: Everyday Life in the Hermit Kingdom, longtime Korea watchers Ralph Hassig and Kongdan Oh cover topics from the ruling Kims down to the struggles of ordinary North Koreans. In their view, buttressed by interviews with some 200 defectors, the state is fraying. . . . Experts have been predicting the endgame for the Kim regime for decades. These books—both of them important additions to the North Korea canon—suggest that the moment of change is approaching. (Time.Com)

As Kongdan Oh and Ralph Hassig note in their informative book, the apparatchiks are soon holding lectures warning that North Korea could go the way of the Warsaw Pact if Party functionaries can't stem the corrosive effects of entertainment from the outside world. (New York Review Of Books)

The Hidden People is important as the first comprehensive guide to a new, post-famine North Korean society made available to an English-speaking audience....I am often asked what I consider to be the best introduction for readers curious about the basics of North Korean life. From now on, The Hidden People will be my recommendation. (Pacific Affairs)

Authors Hassig and Oh hit it out of the park again: a must read on North Korea
By Merrily Baird
The ever-growing community of government officials, scholars, and ordinary citizens concerned about North Korea has cause to celebrate the issuance of "The Hidden People of North Korea" by Ralph Hassig and Kongdan Oh. A decade ago, in publishing "North Korea through the Looking Glass," this husband and wife team established themselves as leading observers of North Korea. "The Hidden People" reaffirms that status by showcasing their superb ability to synthesize a vast amount of information without policy bias. At the same time, the strengths of Hassig and Oh in sorting out signs of change and training a powerful light on the fault lines between illusion and reality provide the raw material for others to judge whether North Korea can long survive as we currently know it.

"The Hidden People" is divided into nine chapters. Chapters 2 through 8 focus on Kim Chong-il, his family, and his leadership style; the economic system as it operates in theory and is lived by people on an every day basis; the government's crumbling control of the information environment; human rights issues; and the growing number of defections. Neither the final chapter, "The End Comes Slowly," nor any other offers a significant focus on the strategic questions with which policymakers most often grapple. In this regard, there is very limited attention paid to the country's dependence on weapons of mass destruction, its willingness to proliferate WMD technology, and its inclination (or lack thereof) to abide by disarmament agreements. This matters little, however, because numerous other authors have addressed these issues.

Understanding a Closed Society
By Robert G. Rich, Jr.
This is the most authoritative and complete report yet available outside the hermit kingdom on life in North Korea. I have known "Katy" Oh for some years as a top American analyst of Korean issues, and this husband and wife product is a tour de force indeed considering how difficult the subject. With this deeper understanding at hand, perhaps we will hear fewer simplistic assumptions about the North in the future. The Hassigs persuasively suggest that the foreign aid we and South Korea have provided actually served to help prolong the regime. As one of those who predicted Kim Chong-il's reign would be short after the death of the Great Leader, it is clear to me now why so many of us were wrong, and why this anachronistic closed totalitarianism may well even survive his own death. Highly readable, thorough, and well written.

Misleading
By Robert K. Klimt, Jr.
This is supposed to be a book about life in North Korea. Instead it is a hodge-podge of statistics, the living conditions of the leadership, how bodyguards are selected and about three hundred pages of other ramblings. I was very disappointed in this book as I hoped for a look into the actual living condition's and lifestyle of average North Koreans. If I had wanted a statistical and economic briefing of the country, I would have called the state department.

The End of the American Century, by David S. Mason

This compelling and persuasive book is the first to explore all of the interrelated aspects of America's decline. Hard-hitting and provocative, yet measured and clearly written, The End of the American Century demonstrates the phases of social, economic, and international decline that mark the end of a period of world dominance that began with World War II. The costs of the war on terror and the Iraq War have exacerbated the already daunting problems of debt, poverty, inequality, and political and social decay. David S. Mason convincingly argues that the United States, like other great powers in the past, is experiencing the dilemma of "imperial overstretch"—bankrupting the home front in pursuit of costly and fruitless foreign ventures.

The author shows that elsewhere in the world, the United States is no longer admired as a model for democracy and economic development; indeed, it is often feared or resented. He compares the United States and its accomplishments with other industrialized democracies and potential rivals. The European Union is more stable in economic and social terms, and countries like India and China are more economically dynamic. These and other nations will soon eclipse the United States, signaling a fundamental transformation of the global scene. This transition will require huge adjustments for American citizens and political leaders alike. But in the end, Americans—and the world—will be better off with a less profligate, more interdependent United States.

Review
This is a well-written, engaging, and impressive work in scope and integration. The End of the American Century provides the information and analysis for the informed discussion and debate about our economic and political problems that must take place as we face the monumental decisions that will decide our fate over the coming generations. It should be read by all who share a deep concern for the American future, but especially by young people who must live in it. (James R. Kluegel, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign)

With remarkable clarity and evenness of tone, Mason's text provokes students to think out loud together about what it means to be American in the world today, and how a range of interconnected issues, conventionally ignored in more orthodox IR, are directly relevant to their future lives. I'm excited about teaching with this book. (Mark Rupert, Syracuse University)

Well designed and thoroughly argued. The author does a splendid job of backing up every one of his assertions. This book has an enormous amount to say and deserves a wide audience. (Mark Gibney, University of North Carolina at Asheville, and Lund University and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute)

Thorough and Readable. A much needed book.
By C. Hamman
Professor David Mason's The End of the American Century is a must read for anyone seeking to understand either the current conditions of American society or what the twenty-first century will mean for the United States. Rarely has such an empirical powerhouse been joined with the sort of no-nonsense prose and intellectual honesty found in Mason's writing.

Fundamentally, this text attempts to demonstrate how the United States--the dominant global power since the Second World War--has fallen into a cycle of systematic decline, both causing and effecting harms in economics, politics, social welfare, and international affairs.

While others have attempted to articulate the changes and challenges of the coming century, Mason's work stands apart on several counts.

The most apparent, even upon a glance, is that this book backs up every assertion with mountains of evidence. Unlike the attempts of journalists and ideologues, which have typically relied on grandiose prose and subtle sophistry, Mason uses decades of experience as a comparative political scientist to deliver gobs of solid citation.

A second quality of Mason's work, equally necessary as the first, is that the text refuses to be victimized by the weight of its data. Mason writes in a style rare for the academy, his paragraphs and points intelligible to any literate person. Moreover, the author refrains from mixing unfounded opinion with fact--a rare feat in today's political climate.

A final feature that sets this work apart is its scope. While other authors have focused exclusively on changes to either the United States or to the global scene, Mason manages to capture both the domestic and the international, devoting chapters to localized aspects of US decline, but taking care to tie these issues back to the global arena which they simultaneously shape and are shaped by.

Below I list a highly abridged account of the arguments presented in American Century. They can only be properly understood by keeping in mind that these are mutually reinforcing harms, ones that have resulted from institutions, popular actions, and long term trends.

Main Argument: While the United States was the dominant global power of the twentieth century (the "American century"), it is now suffering from multifaceted, interlocking harms which will dictate a more reserved place in the world in the years to come.

Chapter 1, Imperial Overstretch and Economic Decline: Mason argues that national debt, budget deficits, trade deficits, unfunded liabilities (Social Security and Medicare), and uncontrolled spending have created a precarious economic future for the United States. Attempting to alleviate economic decline with imperial expansion will merely exacerbate insolvency.

Chapter 2, The End of Affluence and Equality: Mason details widespread American poverty and the human hardships it presents. Considerable attention is devoted to economic inequality, crazed consumer spending, and negative savings rates.

Chapter 3, Torn Social Fabric: Inadequate Health Care and Violent Crime: The title of this chapter is rather explanatory. Mason relies heavily on his comparative background here, detailing how American exceptionalism truly exists (malignantly) in these areas.

Chapter 4, The Dimming of America: Education, Science, and Fundamentalism: Once again, the title is quite indicative. Mason shows how primary, secondary, and post-secondary education is failing in the United States. This is deeply linked to (the ignorance and dislike of) science and (the substantial embrace of) fundamentalism, forming an ideology that shuns the intellectual.

Chapter 5, Ailing American Democracy: Mason not only focuses on low voter turnout and political ignorance, but the moneyed politics, political propaganda, and lack of political accountability that foster democratic deficits. Lastly, he details the human rights abuses of the G.W. Bush administration, arguing that systems of surveillance and torture are antithetical to democratic values.

Chapter 6, Abandoning International Order: Unilateralism and International Law: Here, Mason discusses US disregard for international norms, citing a heap of treaties rejected by the United States, such as conventions on genocide or children's rights. Other international norms, such as those regulating military action, have been officially declared inconsequential by the United States, such as in the case of the Bush doctrine.

Chapter 7, The Last Gaps of US Supremacy: The Iraq War and Terrorism: Here, Mason reviews the costs of the Iraq invasion, in dollars, geopolitics, and human life. He underscores how Iraq represents a transition to a world whose problems are increasingly unsolvable by force and that must be met instead with cooperative and economic efforts--efforts shunned by the United States.

Chapter 8, The World Sours on the United States: This chapter is an analysis of global attitude toward the US government, US society, and US citizens. Mason finds that while negative international opinion has historically been directed against the US government, it has now begun to turn against Americans themselves, becoming particularly savage in the aftermath of the Iraq invasion.

Chapter 9, America's New Rivals: Europe, China, and Others: While the United States is poised for decline, other powers are rising. Mason gives particular attention to the European Union, China, and the rest of the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) countries. Mason does not suggest any of these states or coalitions will attain the level of dominance held by the United States during the twentieth century, but he does see a new multipolar world emerging.

Chapter 10, America and the World after the American Century: In conclusion, Mason argues that although the United States is in the midst of decline, it need not be a catastrophic event for Americans. Although there are certainly frightening possibilities, if coming burdens are distributed fairly, and if institutional problems can be corrected, the US may find itself in a new, cooperative international order. Hope can be found in the active citizen, in long held but sleeping American values, and in the promise of coming generations.

Excellent long-term perspective for changing times
By Samia Serageldin
At the beginning of the 20thC, the sun never set on the British Empire, and few would have predicted that it was the beginning of the end of what we might now call the British century. The 20thC, in retrospect, belonged to the United States. Today, in the first decade of the 21stC, far-sighted commentators like David Mason look beyond the single superpower status quo to a new role for America as a player, but not the sole dominant power, in the world of tomorrow. No doubt the Afghan and Iraq wars, by exposing the limits of projecting U.S. military power abroad, have hastened the realization of the end of the era of the go-it-alone superpower. The challenge to America in the first year of the new millenium may have come from an unthinkable attack launched from the Middle East, but the real, long-term challenge to American economic and military hegemony is developing in China, India and a united Europe. What the United States stands for in the new century- morally, economically, geopolitically- is taking shape today. This book seems to argue for the best of America's legacy to be passed on tothe world.Cairo House (Arab American Writing)

good book for overview of changing American role in world
By William Beranek, Jr.
Mason's book is a passionate, concise, easy-to-read description of the meteoric rise and collapse of the American Century of dominance from 1945 to the present and on to our choices for the future.

Mason structures the book around the idea of "The American Century" proclaimed in 1941 by the conservative Henry Luce (publisher of Life magazine ) in a famous essay and promoted in 1941 by the liberal FDR in his Four Freedoms speech. After the war, the stage was set under American supremacy to achieve these noble American ideals.

The book describes what happened then, using two critical threads of recent America history.

One thread is the arc of rise and fall of all empires. America reached its pinnacle after collapse of Soviet Union but by then the normal factors of empire decay were manifest. These forces are pushing America to be one among many countries instead of the supreme leader of nations.

The other thread is the George Bush presidency. According to Mason, his presidency not only alienated peoples of the world from the American government as its leader but also alienated them from the American people as stewards of the vision of democracy and freedom.

The chapters describe the rise and fall of American trends in affluence, heath care, crime, education, scientific capability, respect for international law, environment and economic strength.

He says our habits have become compulsions for products made elsewhere and paid for by borrowing money from overseas. That in turn has led to a national paranoia for security and profligate use of fossil fuels that threatens the global environment.

This is good book for the educated youth of today to understand the context of political and economic forces of world today and for all others who care about their future.

Review
In this second edition, Mahler presents a comprehensive survey of the diverse structures and institutions that make up the Jewish state. Following a brief history of modern Israel, the author covers the political ideology (Zionism) and its role in the establishment of the contemporary Jewish state. The survey includes descriptions of constitution, branches of government, the Knesset (parliament), political parties, the electoral process, and the influence of interest groups. There is emphasis on population diversity with chapters devoted to the role of various Orthodox religious and secular factions, the Arab minority, and the many Jewish immigrant groups that form distinctive blocs. In various areas, the author observes, Israel is a young nation that has not reached the level of development of political practices 'that we find in other stable, but much older democracies.' Nearly a third of the book is devoted to foreign policy and Israel's setting in the Middle East, including chapters on the Palestinians, the West Bank, Gaza, Jerusalem, and the lengthy 'peace process.' Especially useful are the many boxes, maps, and tables. Summing Up: Recommended. All readership levels. (CHOICE 2011-08-01)

Review
This collection would make an excellent text for an advanced undergraduate or introductory graduate course in the philosophy of language. Its particular choice of readings is very good and not available in any other collection; its conceptualization of the subject and focus is extremely well suited for its intended audience, and the editors' introductions are substantive and helpful. Gendered Justice takes a unique, multi-layered look at the various elements that factor into our understanding of domestic violence and how the criminal justice system handles situations of domestic violence. The book focuses primarily on the role of gender, but also considers socio-economic status, race, age, education, and the relationship between the victim and criminal. Illustrated with case studies throughout, the book introduces major themes, such as the social construction of gender and victimology, as well as topics such as the portrayal of intimate partner violence in the media and how it shapes our understanding of violence.

Review
Gendered Justice offers an innovative way of understanding a major social problem that is endemic to American society. Experts in the field and students will find the authors' contribution to be an important resource. (Walter S. DeKeseredy, University of Ontario Institute of Technology; co-author of Dangerous Exits: Escaping Abusive Relationships in Rural America)

Gendered Justice brings a fresh and critical analysis to the discussion of gender based violence, especially intimate partner violence. Moving beyond the traditional critique of the criminal justice system, Garcia and McManimon examine the response of law enforcement, including an enlightening discussion of orders of protection, the shelter movement, and progressive approaches to addressing domestic violence, including family violence courts and restorative justice programs. Their focus on the response to gender based violence is unique and fills an important niche for both scholars and students of gendered violence. (Angela J. Hattery, George Mason University, author, Intimate Partner Violence)

About the Author
Venessa Garcia is assistant professor of criminal justice at Kean University. She is the editor of Female Crime Victims.
Patrick McManimon is assistant professor and graduate program coordinator of criminal justice at Kean University. He previously worked as a warden and other administrative positions in the Illinois Department of Corrections.
