As we experience a significant increase in the price of petroleum, energy experts caution us to the coming of a time when easily accessed petroleum will begin to decline. The United States is confronted with the challenge of meeting current energy demands in the face of a declining and unstable energy supply.

Alternative Energy systematically explores the most viable alternative sources of energy, discussing the technical, political, economic, and social feasibility of each technology in understandable terms. In addition, the book discusses the history of energy policy, as well as current policy. Intended for courses in energy and public policy, as well as for those interested in developing energy-efficient plans for sustainable communities, Alternative Energy will help laypersons become active participants in making future energy choices for their communities. Includes an interactive model of alternative energy mixes and estimated prices.

Review
A comprehensive introduction to alternative energy sources and their political, economic, and social feasibility. The topic is important, and there is much of value in Simon's evenhanded presentation of the vulnerabilities and advantages of each source (e.g., geothermal, solar, wind). Simon has produced an accessible, accurate description of how alternative energy sources work and the obstacles to their broader adoption. His book is a significant contribution to the literature. Highly recommended. General readers; students, lower-division undergraduate and up; researchers and practitioners. (CHOICE)

This book is packed with information on most of the major alternative energy sources. Especially useful will be the end-of-chapter summaries and the references. Controversial subjects are treated with an even hand. (John Reynolds, University of Oregon)

Americans face a major challenge in the coming decades of reformulating their public policies to reflect a world in which fossil fuels are no longer plentiful, easily accessible and relatively inexpensive to prepare for market and ultimate consumption. The economics, the basic science, and the cultural and political dynamics associated with public policy reformulation in the area of alternative energy sources are indeed complex―and the challenge is appropriately framed as a 'wicked problem' by Christopher Simon in this excellent monograph. Simon should be commended for his artful framing of this issue, and for his fair and even-handed assessment of the public policy options facing citizens and policymakers alike as we struggle to assure future generations of a quality of life at least as good as that we have enjoyed during our period of stewardship over the planet's resources. I can recommend this well-informed overview of the alternative energy challenges which lie ahead for our country without reservation, and in confidence that the readers of this volume will find it at once informative and insightful. (Nicholas P. Lovrich, Jr., Claudius O. and Mary W. Johnson Distinguished Professor of Political Science, and director, Division of Governmental Studies and)

This book takes a persuasive, broad view of the coming paradigmatic shift towards a sustainable energy future. Dr. Simon views this transition as the outcome of interactions among market forces of stakeholder dynamics, values evolution and institutional redesign. (T. R. Lakshmanan, director, Center for Transportation Studies; Professor, Department of Geography and Environment; Executive Director, Center for)

This is a very enlightening intro to energy policy.
By Mark Twain
This book was very interesting. It outlines the environments in which laws and energy-governing bodies are made and how they are changed, created, etc. The book shows the different kinds of policies which exist, the history of energy policy in the U.S., difference between bottom-up and top-down policy, and more. It also has separate chapters on each of the different major kinds of renewable alternative energy: solar, wind, geothermal. The author(s) obviously know tons about all of these subjects and related subjects. The book is FULL of citations (which shows they did research and it's not all just conjecture) and refers to related books for further reading. In-line website address citations can be annoying in the text, but still could never detract from the wealth of information in this book. I will strongly suggest anyone to read this book. Now I don't have to say "there should be a law about this" or "why doesn't the government do something about this" because now I know why! In addition, the book was written within the last few years, so it is fairly up-to-date (this review written Jan 5th 2009). When I rented this book, I set out to learn about wind and solar, but ended up learning about wind, solar, energy policy, social concerns, risk assessment, and tons more.

Good overview, but outdated and with limited detail
By W. Sawyer
I had high hopes for this book. For all the fluff about alternative energy, there are hardly any works which make a comprehensive feasibility analysis of alternative energy sources. Even David MacKay's outstanding book "Sustainable Energy without the Hot Air" (available for free at http://www.withouthotair.com) skips the cost-benefit analysis for the most part, with MacKay admitting that it would be beyond the scope of his book.

Christopher Simon's book presents a good overview of alternative energy -- solar, wind, geothermal, but also nuclear. However it provides only few numbers and no "back-of-the-envelope" calculations as are ubiquitous in MacKay's book. It only quotes and summarizes other works when it comes to the feasibility analysis. These works stem from the early 2000's, meaning the state of knowledge is roughly ten years old. Much has happened in the field since. For example, Simon mentions in passing that storage systems are needed to store energy (e.g. from wind farms) when it is available. For Simon these storage systems are essentially batteries (and lead-acid ones at that). MacKay, on the other hand, devotes an entire chapter (albeit without a feasibility study) to storage systems, including reversible hydroelectric, and using electric cars as a storage medium.

The social and political discussion is welcome, with interesting overview of "Wind Power America" (WPA). But it would be more welcome to have a projection (even with limited accuracy) of how developments like WPA might scale in the future.

Overall a good book, but definitely not the definitive analysis of the feasibility of alternative energy.

An excellent introduction to alternative energy feasibility from a non-engineering perspective.
By Dr. Keith Thomsen
This is an excellent introductory text on alternative energy for non-engineers with much to recommend it. Hopefully, the author will update this edition soon as there are a great many additional issues that have emerged over the past 8 years that would benefit from the authors' insightful analysis. The information is very accessible to novices and experienced practitioners alike.

Sherman's March in Myth and Memory (The American Crisis Series: Books on the Civil War Era), by Edward Caudill, Paul Ashdown

General William Tecumseh Sherman's devastating "March to the Sea" in 1864 burned a swath through the cities and countryside of Georgia and into the history of the American Civil War. As they moved from Atlanta to Savannah—destroying homes, buildings, and crops; killing livestock; and consuming supplies—Sherman and the Union army ignited not only southern property, but also imaginations, in both the North and the South. By the time of the general's death in 1891, when one said "The March," no explanation was required. That remains true today.

Legends and myths about Sherman began forming during the March itself, and took more definitive shape in the industrial age in the late-nineteenth century. Sherman's March in Myth and Memory examines the emergence of various myths surrounding one of the most enduring campaigns in the annals of military history. Edward Caudill and Paul Ashdown provide a brief overview of Sherman's life and his March, but their focus is on how these myths came about—such as one description of a "60-mile wide path of destruction"—and how legends about Sherman and his campaign have served a variety of interests.

Caudill and Ashdown argue that these myths have been employed by groups as disparate as those endorsing the Old South aristocracy and its "Lost Cause," and by others who saw the March as evidence of the superiority of industrialism in modern America over a retreating agrarianism.

Sherman's March in Myth and Memory looks at the general's treatment in the press, among historians, on stage and screen, and in literature, from the time of the March to the present day. The authors show us the many ways in which Sherman has been portrayed in the media and popular culture, and how his devastating March has been stamped into our collective memory.

Review
This book is a valuable resource. The breadth of coverage―history, literature, poetry, song, stage, and screen―is extremely impressive. (Civil War Book Review)

Having read the first two excellent books—on Forrest and Mosby—in this unique trilogy, I opened this final book with high expectations of a masterful achievement. In both fact and myth, Sherman was and clearly still is multifaceted. On the eve of the Civil War Sesquicentennial, Caudill and Ashdown eloquently render a multifaceted portrait of a hell of a man.

(David Madden, founding director of the United States Civil War Center)

As is often true in our history, the mythology of major events has a history of its own, shaping our visions of the past. Edward Caudill and Paul Ashdown have traced this Civil War scar in Southern memory to its roots in reality, in memoirs, in histories, in the press, and in mythology, basing their story on rich primary sources and portraying events with the same elegant language they have used in other important Civil War interpretative histories. (Donald L. Shaw, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill)

A major contribution to Civil War historiography. . . cannot be overlooked. Recommended for all history collections—Civil War, social, or intellectual—in all libraries.

(Library Journal)

Integral to the study of public history and collective memory to deliver a cutting-edge analysis. (America's Civil War)

Perhaps the most impressive thing about mass media is their ability to shape historical memory and imagination. Sherman's March in Myth and Memory is one of the best examples now available that shows how this phenomenon works in transforming a region's understanding of itself. Professors Caudill and Ashdown are to be highly commended for this first rate work. (Bruce J. Evensen, DePaul University)

Interesting and exceptionally well-sourced. . . . Thoroughly enjoyable. It provides a worthy new addition to the now burgeoning field of scholarship about media and public memory and would be useful not only to historians but in graduate seminars for students of both history and mass communication. (Journalism History)

Recommended. (Book Review Digest)

The images of Gen. William T. Sherman's men marching through Georgia seemingly remain burned into the American historical memory. Edward Caudill and Paul Ashdown here provide their solidly researched look at how the myth and legends of the march have been created. Works such as this provide an important starting place for further study of those myths that still march on. (James Klotter Journal of American History)

Caudill and Ashdown have constructed a useful book, filled with examples from humor and popular culture that reveal Sherman's place in history and memory. Such memory studies pertaining to the Civil War enable us to better grasp the complexities of this defining moment in American history. (Journal of Southern History)

History garbled huckstered and gilded
By James W. Durney
Reading history is something many of us enjoy. The lives of the great or near great, political movements, wars, migrations all of these things are enjoyable reads. Reading how an event becomes "history" is different from reading history. There are no great moments or dramatic incidents, no bugles, no charging cavalry or great speeches. Instead, we have a newspaper reports, articles in magazines, speeches and letter. Taken together, these items determine our remembrance of the event.
This well written book is a history of how Sherman and the March were "garbled, huckstered and gilded". This is a history of Sherman, the development of the Lost Cause Tradition and how the March clashed with the Reconciliation Tradition in the years following the war. Remembering the war, who writes the history and what is said, occupies much of America's attention from about 1870 to 1920. A great deal is at stake, the people involved are very serious about what history of the war will say. Sherman's March through Georgia is one of the crucial events of the war and all factions have much to say. The March, destroyed Southern resistance by showing how helpless the South was. Humiliating and destructive, it cut the heart out of the Confederacy breaking civilian resolve as it destroyed the infrastructure.
The book starts with a good discussion of the development of the ideas that lead to the March and the immediate it has impact on the war. After that, the book follows Sherman from the end of the war to his death covering his relationship with the GAR and the South. The South's reactions to Sherman are complex and careful. While a major figure in the South's defeat, he is a firm friend. During his life, this duality coupled with Reconciliation needs and fears of Reconstruction produces some odd reactions. After his death as the Lost Cause Tradition takes hold, coverage becomes more caustic. The death of the veterans makes things worse as the story grows. The South's reactions in the early twentieth century are a revelation and show how the Lost cause tradition gained power as the generation that fought the war passed away.
Sherman and the March are great press. We have a comprehensive survey of them in print, song, plays and movies. Along the way, this helps us understand how we make "history". That history is not a collection of names and dates but a shared remembrance and accepted ideas.
This is not an easy read. The authors write in a scholarly style that can make for slow reading. They do have the ability to illustrate some complex ideas and people with a few good sentences. Their presentation is as lively as the subject allows. I do not consider this an enjoyable book. I am interested in how the "history" of the war came into being and how it is changing. This is an excellent book on how Sherman and the March is seen and why.

Superb Look at WT Sherman Comparing Reality with Legend
By Amazon Queen
Superlative book comparing reality with legend (good & bad). This is no whitewash book. Caudill lays it all on the line - even if some of the reality is something people don't want to see. Sherman is a very enigmatic character, I don't think there is anyone who has "figured him out".

I really like Sherman - even more now that I've read this book.

Review
This valuable volume provides an introduction, 15 contextual essays, and a conclusion by experts in practical theology. The book succeeds in 'opening the field,' recognizing the discipline's provisionality and permeability as open-ended and conversational in nature. To aid comparisons, each chapter is structured with the same eight key features. These begin with historical context and proceed through themes such as norms and source of authority, views of the theory-practice relationship, interdisciplinary conversation partners, and areas of current and future research. . . .The editors identify 11 focal concerns that are characteristic of practical theology and that forge an overall unity for the field. Yet the ways practical theologians put these together result in numerous trajectories or approaches. As Stephen Bevans says, 'In practical theology one begins from an experience or a practice.' This perspective leads to the distinctive identities of the chapters, which cover practical theology as it pertains to African Americans, Evangelicals, feminists/womanists, Roman Catholics, and US Latinos/Latinas. This overview approach should be very helpful for readers at all levels. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-level undergraduates and above; general readers. (CHOICE)

With the publication of Opening the Field of Practical Theology: An Introduction, Kathleen A. Cahalan and Gordon S. Mikoski have deepened and expanded the tent with a superb collection of essays. The book deepens out understanding by inviting 14 different authors to examine common features of practical theology from diverse perspectives in an accessible and systematic way. . . .The structure is genius because it makes it possible to read the book in a number of different ways. . . .The endnotes add to the aim of this excellent new resource: they open the field of practical theology. (International Journal of Practical Theology)

Opening the Field of Practical Theology offers practical theology students and teachers abundant access points into studying, teaching, and engaging diverse practices. This book will be required in doctoral studies in practical theology, will support life-long reflection on ministerial practices and vocational development, and will empower collaboration among diverse practical theologians. . . .Opening the Field of Practical Theology invites readers to enter practical theology’s convergences (named in the conclusion as valuing self-reflection, context, and interdisciplinarity) and divergences (named in the conclusion as differing interpretations of human experiences, historical contexts, and normative sources). The editors also encourage readers to play with the order of the chapters, underlying commitments, organization provided by the common template, and additional convergences and divergences. . . .[T]he volume affirms practical theology’s robust role in formative theological study, carrying on a long-standing conversation among scholars that is itself open to new voices and perspectives. Opening the Fieldof Practical Theology provides an invaluable contribution to a field of study that has opened multiple significant future trajectories. (Theology Today)

Particularly noteworthy is the clear treatment given by each contributor to perhaps the most heavily-contested aspect of practical theology: the nature and status of sources of authority. Here the comparisons made possible between Catholic, Protestant, and evangelical positions, as well as the insights from a number of liberationist perspectives, will allow students to come to some necessary clarity about a key methodological question, clarity that is grounded in the voices of respected representatives of particular traditions. (Anglican and Episcopal History)

Opening the Field of Practical Theology maps the complex terrain of this field as astutely as anything in print. Its respectful attention to diversity of ethnic and religious contexts and appropriate methods for them is to be applauded. Happily the shared template across the contributions makes it feel like an integrated volume and not simply a collection of essays. Best of all, the authors come across as living theologians whose own stories and contexts matter. This volume not only talks about practical theology, but smartly models it. Bravo! (Edward Foley, capuchin, Catholic Theological Union)

This outstanding book demonstrates the breadth in the emerging field of Practical Theology in the U.S. Different Christian communities, related to different ethnic groups and different cultural contexts, demand for differentiated elaborations of a Practical Theology that should be both theologically normative and culturally informed. The authors paint a vivid picture of Practical Theology today. (Wilhelm Gräb, Humboldt-University Berlin)

Whether you are just starting out in the field of practical theology, or undertaking advanced research, this book has something to offer you. It combines a comprehensive introduction with cutting-edge insights and deserves to be a staple text for many years to come. (Elaine Graham, University of Chester, United Kingdom)

Cahalan and Mikoski have provided a straightforward approach to a complex and seemingly amorphous subject. The common structure of each chapter provides a clear and eminently useful way to engage and understand the nuances within and between various understandings of and approaches to practical theology. Using rubrics that help make explicit what is often only implicit, the authors invite the reader into the dynamic interchange between lived experience and divine activities through a variety of contextual, theoretical, historical and theological lenses. (Barbara McClure, Brite Divinity School)

A wonderful bird’s eye view of the scholarly expanse constituting practical theology today. Kudos to the insightful editors who designed a set of common categories and the stellar scholars who amplified them in overview chapters designed to help readers understand disciplinary developments. Readers will gain an invaluable sense of what counts for practical theology across a range of different approaches. (Bonnie Miller-Mclemore, E. Rhodes and Leona B. Carpenter Professor of Religion, Psychology, and Culture, Vanderbilt University)

This new textbook offers a welcome and fresh approach to teaching and learning practical theology. Its attentiveness to the varieties of practical theological method and its use of a common template across the chapters will help students read comparatively and, thus, better comprehend the complexity of the field. (Kathleen Greider, Edna and Lowell Craig Professor of Practical Theology, Spiritual Care, and Counseling, Claremont School of Theology)

This book offers a privileged participation in practical theological conversation at its very best. Each contribution is similarly organized and contains invaluable notes and citations, allowing readers to encounter the practical theological conversation in its depth and diversity. The authors bring a freshness that interprets contemporary practical theology even while advancing it. Ideal for both students and scholars, this book will be a critical building block for the next generation of practical theology and required reading at all levels of study and scholarly work. (Bryan T. Froehle, St. Thomas University)

Opening the Field of Practical Theology generously invites its readers to explore and to join in the rich and varied conversations which are shaping contemporary practical theology. Written by experts who know and love their approaches to the subject, ministry students, graduate students, and scholars will be informed by this accessible introduction to a variegated field. (Jeffery L. Tribble, Columbia Theological Seminary)

Dancing between common emphases in practical theology and broad diversities, this book opens a rich conversation about practical theological complexities. The extraordinary group of authors introduces a multitude of voices, values, concerns, contexts, histories and methods in practical theology. Even more important, they pose unsettling questions as they uncover the dangers of essentializing and categorizing, the realities of hybridity and plurality, and the practical theology frontiers that have yet to be opened. This book is critical for the future of practical theology. It will open readers and it will open the potential for new work on the frontiers of practical knowing. (Mary Elizabeth Moore, Boston University, Boston Univeristy School of Theology)

It's a messy conversation...
By Wes Ellis
In this book, fourteen of the nations top scholars in the field of practical theology contribute chapters, offering snapshots of various approaches and trajectories in practical theology. If one began with the assumption that practical theology was a fairly monolithic discipline or methodology, this book would certainly challenge that assumption. Opening the Field does not look to clarify what everyone means when they say "practical theology"--as though they all mean the same thing--but instead it opens up and invites the reader into the lively conversation that is practical theology, with its various definitions and approaches. One quickly realizes that while some things are shared among practical theologians (i.e. "respect for the self-identification of other theologians, ...emphasis on context, and the emphasis on interdisciplinary studies" p.271), there is in fact much diversity in the various histories and theological heritages from which different approaches emerge, the key figures to which they refer, the understandings of the relation between theory and practice, and the sources and norms of each discipline. Different people ascribe different degrees of authority to the biblical witness and to the human experience. Some approaches prefer to make ontological claims, others epistemological ones. And yet, there is apparently enough commonality between different approaches for them to stay in conversation (which is why the editors of this book chose to describe it as "a conversation" in their conclusion).

As someone who is relatively new to this field of study (at least at this more defined level), this book was important. It exposed me to approaches to practical theology both familiar and foreign to my own. I was both affirmed and challenged. And, while the field is no more tidy (perhaps it's even a bit more messy) than it was to me before I read this, I feel I have some windows through which to engage the conversation.

So, what is the field of practical theology? It's a conversation about ministry, about God's action and human experience... and Opening the Field of Practical Theology will help you find a way in to the conversation.

This book offers a good introduction to the field of practical theology
By Matthew Dougherty
This book offers a good introduction to the field of practical theology: a theology that connects human experience to one's faith tradition. The book's explorations are not bound to one denomination, but include Protestant, "Neo-Protestant," Evangelical and Catholic perspectives, and it engages a number of cultures and wold-views.

One of the more striking chapters is on "White Practical Theology," something that interested me as a white student of theology. The chapter opens with the authors explaining that when they were confronted by the editor to write such a chapter, they had many disagreements about what "white theology" actually meant. While I understood the author's concern, it also made me cringe a little bit, reinforcing ideas that white people don't really have a culture to be proud of. I was pleasantly surprised reading the chapter, however. I think this chapter could have easily devolved into defining white culture in only negative terms (focusing on the abuse of white privilege, etc.), but it balanced out these critiques (and it sure did offer its critiques) with some other defining characteristics that were helpful in understanding the unique contribution of white theologians amidst an ever-growing diversity of theologians.

The paperback edition is sturdy in the hands and feels like it will hold up to the abuse of bookbags and totes. Recommended!

Globalization and Social Movements: Islamism, Feminism, and the Global Justice Movement, by Valentine M. Moghadam

This clear and concise book examines the crucial relationship between globalization and social movements. Deftly combining nuanced theory with rich empirical examples, leading scholar Valentine M. Moghadam focuses especially on three transnational social movements-Islamism, feminism, and global justice. Defining globalization as a complex process in which the mobility of capital, peoples, organizations, movements, and ideas takes on an increasingly transnational form, the author shows how both physical and electronic mobility has helped to create dynamic global social movements. Globalization has engendered the spread of neoliberal capitalism across the world, but it also has engendered opposition and collective action.

Exploring the historical roots of Islamism, feminism, and global justice, the book also shows how these movements have been stimulated by relatively recent globalization processes, including neoliberalism, war, and hegemonic masculinities. Moghadam examines similarities and differences among the three movements, along with internal differentiation within each. Her argument is informed by feminism, world-systems, world polity, and social movement theories in a seamlessly integrated framework that will be essential reading for all students of globalization.

Val Moghadam has given us the gift we have all been waiting for: a sensible, manageable introduction to social movements in our globalizing world. Plus, she uses a reader-friendly style all too rare in the social sciences. Her own considerable expertise in this area does not get in the way of the big picture. (Jasper, James M.)

Moghadam provides a highly accessible and thorough analysis of the most challenging conflicts in the world-system—gender inequality and religious fundamentalism. This excellent synthesis of literature on globalization, social movements, and conflict will be valuable for students and scholars alike. (Smith, Jackie)

Moghadam's timely and innovative study begins with the observation that while globalization has political, economic, and cultural aspects, its neoliberal capitalist dimension has brought devastating effects of exclusion by increasing inequality of class, gender, and race. Deeply insightful and highly readable, this book will become a classic among scholars as easily as it will find a home in the classroom. (Jillian Schwedler)

The author presents a detailed discussion of the different types of Islamist groups, how the women's movement sees different frames and collective action repertoires, and how international and global processes of social, political, and economic change influence all of these. Recommended. (Choice)

Moghadam's new book continues in . . . furthering our understanding of the connections between the process of globalization and social movement activity. . . . I applaud Moghadam's ability to draw clear connections among distinct globalizations processes. . . . Social movement scholars would do well to read this timely and theoretically pertinent book. . . . It would be an excellent book for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in international studies, political science, sociology, anthropology, history, or women's and gender studies programs. (Mobilization)

Val Moghadam has delivered a panoramic view of global social movements today, drawing on her unparalleled studies of Islamism, transnational feminisms, and the global justice movement. We are all in her debt, progressive scholars and inquisitive activists alike. (John Foran)

A Concise History of Modern Korea: From the Late Nineteenth Century to the Present, by Michael J. Seth

This comprehensive and balanced history of modern Korea explores the social, economic, and political issues it has faced since being catapulted into the wider world at the end of the nineteenth century. Placing this formerly insular society in a global context, Michael J. Seth describes how this ancient, culturally and ethnically homogeneous society first fell victim to Japanese imperialist expansionism, and then was arbitrarily divided in half after World War II. Seth traces the postwar paths of the two Koreas—with different political and social systems and different geopolitical orientations—as they evolved into sharply contrasting societies. South Korea, after an unpromising start, became one of the few postcolonial developing states to enter the ranks of the first world, with a globally competitive economy, a democratic political system, and a cosmopolitan and dynamic culture. By contrast, North Korea became one of the world's most totalitarian and isolated societies, a nuclear power with an impoverished and famine-stricken population. Considering the radically different and historically unprecedented trajectories of the two Koreas, Seth assesses the insights they offer for understanding not only modern Korea but the broader perspective of world history.

Fine Overview; 4.5 Stars
By R. Albin
In crucial respects, Korea is arguably the oldest nation in the world. People of Korean ethnicity-language group have occupied essentially the same region for centuries with a remarkable degree of cultural and institutional continuity. To an unparalleled extent, Korea has been a unified state for centuries. In the late 19th century, Korea was overwhelmingly rural, discouraged foreign trade, very socially stratified, had been ruled by the same dynasty for centuries, and was more Confucian in its intellectual culture and institutions than China itself. In the early 21st century, Korea is divided and its 2 different halves the products of 2 remarkably different approaches to achieving modernization.

In this clearly written and concise book, Michael Seth outlines the very interesting history of how this happened. Seth begins with the late 19th century structure of Korea and the powerful forces that destroyed traditional Korean society. A small nation surrounded by a much larger and turbulent China, a rapidly modernizing Japan, and the expanding Russian empire, plus the aggressions of other western Imperial powers, Korea's traditional position and society was untenable. Seth outlines well how the Korean elite attempted to fend off other powers, and how a small number of Koreans attempted to push Korea down a path to modernity. Following the success of the Japanese in its wars against China and Russia, Korea became a protectorate and then an outright colony of Japan. Much of what would happen subsequently in Korea has its roots in the colonial period. The Japanese were exploitative and often brutal overloads but also began to develop modern educational systems and the initial industrialization of Korea. The disparate response of Koreans to the Japanese occupation also had lasting political consequences. Many Koreans became Japanese clients and many of these individuals became our clients in post-WWII era. Some Koreans who resisted the Japanese actively became leftist partisans and from their ranks would emerge the leaders of North Korea. These divergent paths made possible, though not inevitable, the civil war that would become the devastating Korean war. As Seth points out, one of the major effects of Japanese colonization and WWII would be the wholesale disruption of traditional Korean life, one of the factors that made the great transformations of the post-WWII era feasible.

Seth provides a very even-handed discussion of the Korean war and its causes, stressing the civil nature of the conflict and its entanglement with the Cold war. The arbitrary division of the peninsula and the devastation of the war are laid out well. This section is followed by a nice series of chapters laying out the post-war development of the 2 Koreas, a markedly contrasting story of 2 different paths to modernization, one leading to a prosperous and democratic state, the other to what the historian Bruce Cumings terms a poverty stricken "nationalistic monarchy." Unavoidably, there is more discussion of South Korea than the North because of the limitations of the documentary record. The discussions of South Korean politics and economic modernization, an intelligent application of state power, are very interesting.

In terms of achieving a concise overview without being superficial, this book is a real success. A couple of additions would have nice. A detailed map would be useful. There is an annotated bibliography but a longer such addendum would enhance this book. Finally, a few summary charts or tables on demography, economic indicators, educational indicators, etc., would enhance the book. Nonetheless, an admirable performance.

Awful - missing pages

It is unforgivable to sell a book with pages missing. Two large sections, first in the middle of Chapter 3 then the beginning of Chapter 6. Simply unforgivable.

Information with minimum bias
By foxmulder_ms
I know this books is mostly designed to be a text book but it also excels attracting regular readers like me who want to form their own ideas based on solid facts.

Most of the books about China is politically driven and writers just try to impose their opinions and/or presumptions (annoying as "facts") about China. I wanted facts and information about this country. This book does not disappoint on that front.

Well written and follows the standards of academic writing. It is just refreshing to read a book like this on a popular topic.

Great work.

My only complain its cosmetics. The book is printed on mat white paper in black and white. I would have paid double for higher quality print with bigger fonts, more and nicer pictures/maps!!!

Queers in Court: Gay Rights Law and Public Policy, by Susan Gluck Mezey

In Queers in Court, Susan Gluck Mezey examines the contemporary battle for gay and lesbian rights in the United States, tracing the evolution of issues from same sex marriage and privacy rights to military service and employment discrimination. By combining analyses of nearly three hundred cases from both federal and state courts with detailed explorations of the paths these issues have taken through legislative and executive bodies, she provides the most comprehensive analysis of queer rights in law and policy to date. Both scholars seeking a case study in minority rights and those looking for a primer in gay and lesbian politics will find Mezey's book of interest.

Review
Queers in Court is a meticulously researched survey of gay rights cases in state and federal courts over the last fifty years. Susan Gluck Mezey provides a comprehensive and richly detailed reference that is indispensable to understanding the interplay in American policymaking among judges, other legal and political elites, and public opinion. A truly enlightening book. (Daniel R. Pinello, author of Gay Rights and American Law and America?s Struggle for Same-Sex Marriage)

I learned a lot from reading Queers in Court, and expect to consult it many times. The book is must reading for students of gay and lesbian politics, but it will also be useful for anyone interested in social movements in the American courts. It provides that rare balance of a broad perspective that still includes all of the details specialists require. (Clyde Wilcox, professor of government, Georgetown University)

Queers in Court provides a nuanced historical survey that builds on the already-rich scholarly analysis of U.S. judicial rulings on sexual diversity. Susan Gluck Mezey's background in the exploration of rights litigation by other traditionally-marginalized groups allows her to draw parallels to other struggles without ignoring the distinctive features of queer claims. She also punctures some of the myths about American judicial “activism”―pointing to the recurrent restraint of federal courts and of most state courts. This is a healthy response to both overly-optimistic litigants and highly-selective critics who don't want to believe that there are any LGBT claims that have popular support. (David Rayside, Professor of Political Science and Director of the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies, University of Toronto)

I view the book as a welcome addition to a library supporting gay rights research and believe it would be useful to a broader audience of other scholars, activists, and advocates. (Sharon Whitney Journal of Law & Politics)

A valuable resource for attorneys and scholars. (Booklist, September 28, 2009)

Queers in Court is an excellent overview of gay rights litigation in the U.S. It is thorough yet readable. It covers topics ranging from marriage to the military, it covers them over half a century of American history, it appreciates their nuances, and it places litigation in the context of public opinion. Queers in Court would be useful in a college or law school classroom and it would also be good company on a long plane flight. In one volume, it provides a solid, well-rounded, easily-digested introduction to all of gay law. (William Rubenstein, UCLA School of Law; Founding Director, Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation Law; and Former Director, ACLU Lesbian & Gay Rights Project)

Overall, the book makes a tremendous contribution to the study of judicial policymaking and to the study of sexuality and politics by chronicling, in great detail, the litigation surrounding important elements of LGBT family life....Mezey has created a tremendous resource of students and cholars of the courts and the study of sexuality. The author has taken great care in analyzing the reasoning of important cases....Overall, this book, particularly combined with Mezey*s QUEERS IN COURT, is an excellent addition to the growing scholarship on law, politics, and policies relating to sexual minorities and presents more evidence why this topic is particularly important for scholars of the judiciary. (The Law and Politics Book Review)

Helps understand what this minority has went through and continues to struggle for. I would highly recommend it to expand one's knowledge and understanding of the treatment and laws that affect the LGBTQ community.
