The Life and Teachings of Hillel, by Yitzhak Buxbaum

The Life and Teachings of Hillel provides the most comprehensive treatment ever published of one of the greatest figures in Jewish tradition. Yitzhak Buxbaum weaves together the various stories about Hillel along with his teachings and sayings to develop this ground-breaking portrait, shedding new light on Hillel's illustrious career, fascinating life, and profound teachings. Hillel is one of the most important and popular of the talmudic sages, yet he is mostly known only in the context of two or three popular stories told about him. Such stories as teaching the 'Golden Rule' of Torah 'while standing on one foot,' and his saying, 'If I am not for myself, who will be for me, and if I am for myself alone, who am I,' have eclipsed a more complete view of Hillel's influence and significance. In the rabbinic tradition, there is much debate between the teachings of the school of Hillel and that of his contemporary, Shammai. Hillel is often seen as the more tolerant, softer teacher, with his teachings representing what we consider 'normative' Judaism. Often, the traditions passed down to modern times are a result of the rabbis' reconciliation of the two schools, so that Hillel's pure teachings have been lost. The Life and Teachings of Hillel separates out Hillel's teachings and looks at them independently of Shammai's. Studied on their own, it becomes evident that Hillel was actually much more radical and 'hasidic' than is commonly thought. While he is known for representing the gentler, more loving side of Judaism, in this work his pious radicalism is also apparent. Readers will be charmed and fascinated by Hillel's fiery gentleness. The Life and Teachings of Hillel offers new information about a radiant religious figure, and it also recovers a side of Jewish tradition that has been lost to most people.

Review
Yitzhak Buxbaum's book is a comprehensive study of the quotations and comments found in rabbinic literature about Hillel, who is probably the best known of the ancient sages. In an era of growing religious extremism, Hillel's liberalism in interpreting the halacha could perhaps serve as a beacon to modern-day rabbis to follow in his pious and liberal footsteps.... (Jerusalem Post)

Hillel, the oft-quoted sage who lived sometime between the second quarter of the last century B.C.E. and 10 C.E., is captured from all perspectives through his teachings. Some biographical details emerge, but the emphasis is on his gentle personality which suffused his teachings. It is this aspect which the author finds to be so attractive to contemporary Jews. Sample chapter titles are: Charity and Peace; Hillel and Herod; The Humble Man; Hillel's Teaching Style. The book ably demonstrates why Hillel's teachings were so influential and are still so popular. (Jewish Book World)

The extraordinary nature of Hillel comes to life in the pages of this book. A long needed spiritual biography of one of the greatest talmudic teachers and religious figures is presented to us in a clear and inspiring fashion. (Rabbi Michael Strassfeld)

The Life and Teachings of Hillel is a treasure of information relating to all aspects of Jewish life. It is well researched and very well documented. The book brings to life an entire historical period with its giant leaders. It is amazing how much of Hillel's teachings are still applicable in modern times. Any adult Jewish book collection will benefit from the addition of this volume. It is a joy to read! (Association Of Jewish Libraries)

A much-needed resource
By A Customer
With this book, Buxbaum provides a much-needed resource on the person generally recognized as the founder of rabbinical Judaism. He does a great service by giving the reader the historical, social/political, and religious context for the sayings attributed to Hillel -- both those that are well-known and those that are obscure.
Buxbaum also points to Hillel's more compassionate, inclusive interpretations of religious law as a helpful and appropriate counterpoint to the more legalistic approach of his contemporary, Shammai.
This volume is intended for the intelligent (and faithful) lay reader, rather than the scholar, but both will benefit from reading it. It brings to life a man of great influence and learning. It also revives a great tradition within Jewish life and thought.

A Wonderful Book about a Truly Great Man
By Daniel A. Spiro
Hillel is one of the greatest men who ever lived, and yet it is incredible how little most people -- even most Jews -- know about him. Commonly associated with a couple of glib quotations (e.g., "if I am not for me, who will be; if I am only for me, what am I?"), Hillel is perhaps the perfect bridge between Judaism and Christianity. That is nowhere more apparent than from reading Buxbaum's wonderful book.

In my own research concerning Jewish philosophy, I repeatedly go back to Buxbaum to rekindle my love for Hillel. Whether the reader is a high school student or a Jewish scholar, it is difficult to imagine not being touched by the example that Hillel provides. If I could take five Jewish books with me to a deserted island, this assuredly would be one of them.

good book for the home library
By A Customer
Mr. Buxbaum gives a very thorough account of Hillel and the circumstances surrounding his life. I found that the discription of his teachers and the state of Israel at the time to be very insightful in understanding some of Hillel's well known phrases.
My only negative criticism is that many things in the book are repeated over and over again, giving the impression that Mr. Buxbaum had a pre-set number of pages he needed to fill. Basically, it could have been shorter.
In all, I got a lot out of reading this book.

It Matters Who Is President―Then and Now

At the heart of this provocative book lies the fundamental question: Does it matter who is president on issues of war and peace? The Vietnam War was one of the most catastrophic and bloody in living memory, and its lessons take on resonance in light of America's current devastating involvement in Iraq. Tackling head-on the most controversial and debated "what if" in U.S. foreign policy, this unique work explores what President John F. Kennedy would have done in Vietnam if he had not been assassinated in 1963. Drawing on a wealth of recently declassified documents, frank oral testimony of White House officials from both the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, and the analysis of top historians, this book presents compelling evidence that JFK was ready to end U.S. involvement well before the conflict escalated. With vivid immediacy, readers will feel they are in the president's war room as the debates raged that forever changed the course of American history―and continue to affect us profoundly today as the shadows of Vietnam stretch into Iraq.

Review
Informative and at times exhilarating; recommended for academic collections. (Library Journal 2009-03-01)

John F. Kennedy's unrealized Vietnam strategy gets a comprehensive workout in this volume. . . . The book offers other new insights (PBS broadcaster and former LBJ advisor Bill Moyers, a possible Kennedy-McNamara 'back-channel'). (Publishers Weekly 2009-04-01)

The authors . . . make a fair case that . . . 'virtual history' is a much more serious exercise than counterfactual history. . . . The liveliness of the exchanges and the enthusiasm of the participants do illuminate this critical period in U.S. history. (Foreign Affairs 2009-09-01)

On the two most treacherous issues Kennedy left unresolved, the jury will always be out. Mindful of the southern segregationists in his own party, he moved timidly in advancing civil rights for African-Americans. We'll never know whether his powerful Oval Office addresses, promoted by the National Guard-enforced admission of black students into the University of Alabama in June 1963, was the harbinger of a greater commitment to civil rights activism or not. Nor, of course, will we ever know whether Kennedy would have followed Johnson's disastrous course in Vietnam. The closest we have to an answer can be found in Virtual JFK: Vietnam If Kennedy Had Lived. (The New York Review Of Books)

A fascinating and important book that uses innovative research to explain how America got into the Vietnam quagmire. It is deeply relevant to today's debates about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the danger of war with Iran with timely lessons on presidential leadership. (Bruce Riedel, Director of the Intelligence Project at the Brookings Institution)

As an exercise in virtual history, this book is impeccable. The authors have brought together the relevant policy makers, scholars, and newly released documents to examine the major question of the Vietnam War. Their conclusion―that Kennedy would not have Americanized the war―is reasonable and significant, as is their methodology. This is must reading for any student of American foreign relations. (Robert K. Brigham, Vassar College; author of Guerrilla Diplomacy)

The authors deftly analyze all sides in the debate. They also draw lessons from the Kennedy presidency that can now be useful as the nation moves to rescue U.S. foreign policy from the morass into which it has fallen during the presidency of George W. Bush. JFK has never looked more persuasive or more relevant than he does here. (Wayne S. Smith, senior fellow at the Center for International Policy and adjunct professor at Johns Hopkins University, former chief of the U.S. Interests Section in Havana (1979–1982))

I urge everyone interested in Kennedy, Johnson, and Vietnam, and everyone concerned about the kind of leadership we need to keep our nation out of war, to read this book. It is far and away the best book on these subjects I have ever read―lucid, rich, and balanced, with all sides getting a fair, but critical, hearing. (Robert S. McNamara, Secretary of Defense under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson (1960–1968))

In this carefully documented but very readable account, Blight, Lang, and Welch provide a ringside seat on an important debate that is more than a historical curiosity. They show how a change of leaders can make a profound difference in the unfolding of historical events―then and now. Anyone interested in America's role in the world should read this absorbing book. (Joseph S. Nye Jr., University Distinguished Service Professor, Harvard University)

Virtual JFK: Vietnam if Kennedy Had Lived
By Dreamer Action Figure
(To be clear, this is a review of the film adaptation of the book.)

There is an excellent 30-year old BBC series that aired numerous times in the U.S., entitled, "Connections." In it, British journalist James Burke explores how, throughout history, often accidental minutiae ends up having profound impact on humankind.

Such is the premise of "Virtual JFK: Vietnam if Kennedy Had Lived," which asked the question of if the "police action" in Vietnam would have happened if President John F. Kennedy hadn't been assassinated.

The filmmaker, Koji Masutani, distills Kennedy's major Cold War policy dealings of his roughly 1,000-day presidency into six major avoidances of war. From this, he postulates that Kennedy consistently avoided war and would have again in Vietnam if he'd lived.

The film spends a lot of time in Kennedy press conferences, the time when we see our presidents most publicly vulnerable and witness shades of their character as they're peppered with often-unfriendly questions in a sink-or-swim format. With the 20/20 clarity of history, we see how in this kinder, gentler age of journalism, the reporters grill him, but still stay respectful. We also see him charm the reporters with charisma and intelligence, which we now know was a necessary part of Kennedy's maintaining an inappropriate personal life in the face of their knowledge.

Since Masutani is so obviously an unabashed Kennedy fan, the question arises of how much footage was discarded during his research that didn't jibe with his conclusion. Kennedy also consistently spoke out of both sides of this mouth regarding troop escalation in Vietnam, his most salient words repeated by his successor, President Johnson, to maintain support for the war. In Masutani's telling, there is no black-and-white ideology. There are only angels (Democrats) and demons (LBJ for escalating troop involvement and Republicans, but Especially Anything Richard Nixon). When the personal side of Kennedy is shown he's young and flashing a million-dollar smile while hamming it up with his his siblings. Down time for Johnson is footage of his lumbering frame in a pool about to kiss his dog.

Kennedy's press conferences also seem to have been used as a template for President Barack Obama. While we watch Kennedy we hear the same cadences, the same "uhhh"s and similar logical expressions of identical ideologies from Obama. The same "youth and inexperience" claims leveled at Obama give us a sense of deja vu.

The events depicted are fascinating about quite uncomfortable subjects. We are subjected to a patient explanation of domino theory. We see a young Fidel Castro and are reminded of Adolf Hitler. We see Nikita Kruschev at the height of his power and can't help but wince at what he could have been. We watch Defense Secretary Bob McNamara coolly lay out how many Americans would die in a Soviet first strike launched from Cuba. Somehow the tone becomes ever more somber as the inexorable march to assassination overtakes the film. However, we're captivated and are compelled to watch, even with full knowledge of how the events played out.

Perhaps part of the film's worship of Kennedy shows in how it makes it appear that his policies were in now way shaped by his close trusted advisors, to whom absolutely no credit is given, from Robert Kennedy on down. The other major peacemaker in the movie is successor president Lyndon Johnson's VP, Hubert Humphrey, who vehemently disagreed with Johnson on the level of involvement in Vietnam. It's almost as if we're to believe that fully formed peaceful warriors descend from the heavans to help humankind resolve our warlike tendencies before being either cut down or defeated in an election.

A fair amount of time is given to President Johnson, who ends up being extremely sympathetic. The blustery, arm-twisting, greatest legislator-turned-President of the 20th century is shown as a soft-spoken and ultimately broken man who ends up bleeding into history over the thousands of American boys killed in Vietnam. Lady Bird Johnson as well, who actually gets more screen time than Jackie.

In spite of his personal shortcomings and political moral ambiguities, Kennedy was a peacemaker. Whether he would have avoided all out war in Vietnam will probably be forever open to debate.

In the final analysis, we emerge from the film thankful for someone of Kennedy's ilk during an all-too-long international nightmare.

Virtual JFK,Vietnam if Kennedy had lived
By John McDermott
This film truly made history come alive for me. I could see direct parallels to our involvement in Iraq. How I wish American national leadership from 2000 to 2008 had the capacity of discernment, policy correction and promulgation displayed in this film. The marriage of professional historical review, film presentation and learned narration was thought provoking and moving. The film is well focused and well paced. I appreciated the relatively long segments given to hear President Kennedy explain at length to the world what his thought process and beliefs were on the great issues before him, our nation and the world. It was clear that the use of concise language based on fact and knowledge was prised by him and, I beleive, was appreciated by the American public. America needs to seek leaders who do not disdain intellect, curiosity (defined as a desire to learn or know)and use of language now and in the future. Film such as Virtual JFK brings us back to an even keel to consider what was past to apply to the now and future. Thank you Mr. Masutani (director) and Mr. Blight (historian, co-producer and narrator).

Blight and Lang have done it again!
By Andrei Bolkonsky
Blight and Lang have done it again! Blazing a new trail and having the intestinal fortitude to construct a cogent argument for "what might have been," in a discipline where no one has the guts to do a counter-factual because they're too bound up in trying to explain their version of what they "think" happened. Blight and Lang will let you decide, but provide a compelling framework to lead the reader the the very, very plausible conclusion that The Vietnam War probably would not have been fought it the President had not been assassinated. The circumstantial evidence is definitely there, but this twosome are the first to show that JFK, against the odds, avoided war on six occasions during his all-too-short Presidency "and did not live to prevent the seventh." A must read for serious students of the subject--and you really need to see the film as well. First rate in all respects!

Review
My favorite brave American, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, has again done a courageous thing: she has written a personal and powerful story about her life, from her childhood in El Paso, Texas to her extraordinary present day position as U.S. Congresswoman from the 9th district of Northern California. Renegade For Peace and Justice demonstrates how her faith in her God, her values, and her common sense caused her to say no to the Bush Administration's demand, following the attacks of 9/11, that Congress turn over its constitutional powers to declare war to the President, George W. Bush; giving him a blank check to fund endless aggression against a country that was not responsible for the attacks. Hers was the only dissenting vote. For the layperson this book is a wonderful way to begin to understand how our political system works, or of late, doesn't work, because of Lee's ability to explain, in practical terms, her own positions and those of other members of Congress. Lee is not only a hero and a champion of the marginalized and under-represented, she is also a marvelous teacher. (Alice Walker, poet; activist; author of The Color Purple)

Barbara Lee's honest, personal, and very American story will inspire every reader plus generations of young leaders. Yes, Robert Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and others have led us by their public examples; but in showing us the links between public and private life, Barbara Lee ushers us into a new era that allows leaders to be whole people. (Gloria Steinem)

Barbara Lee, a renegade for justice, fearless but compassionate, sensitive but smart, expresses in this illustrious book, the courage of Esther, the militancy of Deborah, and the faith of Mary. Her undying commitment to her African motherland and to marginalized people everywhere reminds us of her kinship with both Mother Teresa and her role model, Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm. Readers of this book will want to join Congresswoman Lee as renegades for the cause of justice anywhere and everywhere. (Dr. J. Alfred Smith Sr., Senior Pastor, Allen Temple Baptist Church)

Some of the poorest people in the world will never know the name Barbara Lee, yet owe their lives to her determination in the fight against AIDS. Her sense of justice―and injustice―runs about as deep as it's possible to go. (Bono, lead singer of U2 and co-founder of the anti-poverty organization ONE)

When our government shifts from the course charted by our constitution, we can always count on Rep. Barbara Lee to sound the warning bell. Barbara is intimately guided by her sense of direction; when the tide of public opinion runs in the opposite way, Barbara's internal compass guides her through fog that can cloud the sharpest minds. (Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA), Chair, Asian Pacific American Caucus)

Barbara Lee's exciting autobiography gives us hints why she is such an extraordinary, unique leader. She has lived "Yes. We Can! Si Se Puede!" We can all learn and be grateful for Barbara Lee's life. (Dolores Huerta, president of the Dolores Huerta Foundation and cofounder of United Farm Workers)

Most memoirs by Members of Congress are safe, tepid retellings of hardscrabble upbringings or glossing-over of troubled pasts. Not so in the candid new book by Rep. Barbara Lee, which delves into raw emotional territory from the California Democrat's past, including a secret marriage, a clandestine abortion, an abusive marriage and even an LSD trip forced upon her by her violent ex-husband....Still, the story ends in triumph, and Lee remembers her career in the House and the support, both public and private, that she's gotten for her controversial stance as the sole Member of Congress who voted against the use of force after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. We do love a happy ending. (Roll Call, July 2008)

Her passion for public service brought her into the orbit of the Black Panther Party and later more mainstream politics as she developed her iconoclastic views on how to serve. She details the challenges of getting ahead in politics, relying on a strong faith, and maintaining the courage to stand up for what she thinks is right. (September 2008 Booklist)

A refreshingly frank self-examination by a public figure. (Tammerlin Drummond Contra Costa Times, "Public Lawmaker Shows her Private Side" from November 12, 2008)

It's striking to read....Lee's story, told in an earnest, almost reticent way, is startling: who would have thought that this person who has at times been vilified as a left-wing radical is trying to live what she was taught by nuns and in her Methodist Sunday school? (Shelf Awareness, November 2008)

If you enjoy a good biography or if you're a political junkie, you'll love this book. Renegade for Peace & Justice is a book to pay attention to. (The Charlotte Post, December 2008)

Renegade For Peace And Justice: Congresswoman Barbara Lee Speaks For Me is the title of the most profound autobiography there is. Congresswoman Lee's life is an example to all―you can accomplish, you can stand. It is wonderful. (The Birmingham Times, January 2009)

Great!
By W. Forst
Barbara Lee's book is very interesting, especially
her life before politics. This gal is a real hero and
really what America is about. By heard work, by not
being involved in the prison of fear, she conquered all.
If all Congresspeople had come up the same fashion I think we
would have a very exciting Congress.

Excellent Read
By Algernon D. Acey
It was a quick read. I learned some things I didn't know. For one I never knew that Lee was an active member of the Black Panther Party during her days as a college student at Mills College in Oakland. Growing up she was a domestic violence victim, as was her mother before her. That was a surprise. I could never imagine a man even thinking of beating her down.

When I lived in the Bay Area I had a chance to talk one on one with Lee twice. I found her to be honest, straightforward, and eager to listen to her constituents. That is a trait often unheard of these days. Most politicians only seem interested in campaign contributors not the everyday worker.

The first chapter of the book is a bit slow but it takes off after that. It is also unfortunate that the black and white photos are of such poor quality.

I particularly found her decision to vote against the Baby Bush war and the reactions to it captivating. Not many people in history have had the courage she has.

This is a book I have been waiting a long time for. It was well worth the read and I am anxiously looking forward to her next book.

Escaping North Korea: Defiance and Hope in the World's Most Repressive Country, by Mike Kim

The first of its kind, this book provides a unique inside look into the hidden world of ordinary North Koreans. Mike Kim, who worked with refugees on the Chinese border for four years, recounts their experiences of enduring famine, sex-trafficking, and torture, as well as the inspirational stories of those who overcame tremendous adversity to escape the repressive regime of their homeland and make new lives.

One of the few Americans granted entry into the secretive "Hermit Kingdom," Kim came to know the isolated country and its people intimately. His North Korean friends entrusted their secrets to him as they revealed the government's brainwashing tactics and confessed their true thoughts about the repressive regime that so rigidly controls their lives. Civilians and soldiers alike spoke of what North Koreans think of Americans and war with America. Children remembered the suffering they endured through the famine. Women and girls recalled their horrific experiences at the hands of sex-traffickers. Former political prisoners shared their memories of beatings, torture, and executions in the gulags.

With the permission of these courageous individuals, Kim now shares their stories and recounts his dramatic experiences leading North Koreans to asylum through the six-thousand-mile modern-day underground railway through Asia. His unflinching narrative exposes the truth about North Korea, stripping away the last veils that still shroud this brutal dictatorship.

From Publishers Weekly
Kim chronicles his effort to lead North Korean refugees through the 6,000-mile underground railway through China in this exposé of the astonishing day-to-day realities of famine, religious oppression, torture and sexual abuse in the most secretive and impoverished member of the axis of evil. The author, a former missionary, spent four years at the China–North Korea border building shelters and orphanages, and his access to government officials, journalists, aid workers and hundreds of North Korean refugees provide him a unique vantage point from which to synthesize current research and policy on conditions in North Korea with affecting real-life testimonials. His intrepid effort to help four North Korean teenagers avoid arrest and repatriation on the journey from northern China to the British consulate in Shanghai is riveting, as is his insider knowledge of the perilous route refugees navigate across the borders of China, Laos and Thailand. The author's compassion and astonishing ability to penetrate the Hermit Kingdom and lift its shroud of secrecy do much to ameliorate the book's chief flaws, the clunky prose and occasionally amateurish conjecture and derivative political analysis. Review
[A] fascinating account of [Mike Kim's] efforts to smuggle North Korean defectors to freedom in the South. (The New York Review Of Books)

[Kim's] intrepid effort to help four North Korean teenagers avoid arrest and repatriation on the journey from northern China to the British consulate in Shanghai is riveting, as is his insider knowledge of the perilous route refugees navigate across the borders of China, Laos and Thailand. (Publishers Weekly)

The power of Escaping North Korea stems from the stories Mr. Kim tells. During his four years in China, he met hundreds of escapees from the North. He reconstructs their tales—of the privations of daily existence in North Korea, of life on the lam in China—in heartbreaking detail. . . . There are many heroes in Mr. Kim's book, not least the author himself. (The Wall Street Journal)

A portrait of modern North Korea by an awareness advocate who was granted special access to the country's isolationist circles shares inspirational stories by survivors of such tragedies as famine, sex-trafficking, and gulag torture. (Forecast Magazine)

Mike Kim focuses on the question why such a large number of North Koreans are seeking refuge in China. He describes their flight and their situation in China as well as the living conditions in North Korea, including the situation of Christians under the North Korean regime. Among their sufferings are the following: poverty, famine, unemployment, violence, alcoholism, theft, corruption, bribery, oppression, gambling, abuse, rape, human trafficking, child soldier slavery, etc. According to Kim, famine and the search of food is the most common reason why North Koreans defect. (International Journal for Religious Freedom)

Mike's embrace of the spartan and hazardous vocation of protecting North Korean refugees in China is nothing short of exceptional. His book offers a personal and compelling account of this life-and-death rescue operation for our cousins in the North. (Tim Peters, Helping Hands Korea)

It is impossible to read the remarkable stories of personal suffering, endurance, and courage in these pages without believing that more can and must be done to help the North Korean people. It is not bad strategy or poor diplomatic practice to place human rights at the top of our agenda with Pyongyang and to challenge the rest of the international community to do the same. (Michael J. Green, Georgetown University)

This is an inspiring yet tragic study of the brave few in North Korea who have chosen to vote with their feet to leave the earth's most repressive regime. An important and accessible piece of work, it should be read by generalists and specialists alike. (Victor Cha, Georgetown University)

We hear about women refugees who suffer when sold as brides for rural Chinese farmers (a practice, incidentally, that involves many Chinese, not just Korean refugees, though this is not discussed), or who are sold into city brothels. We hear of children born to stateless North Korean mothers in China, who as a consequence are unable to attend school or obtain medical care. We hear that most refugees are sick when they cross the border. We gain insights into indoctrination and the mindset of North Koreans after six decades of socialist rule. We learn how refugees initially appear lifeless and rarely smile; that they are usually weak, thin, and malnourished; and so on. And it is here that the volume's strength resides. (Keith Howard Reviews)

Americans and other foreigners have also opened a window to the suffering of the North Korean people, including Mike Kim, a young Tae Kwon Do expert who opened a string of martial arts studios in China as cover to help North Koreans defect. His book, Escaping North Korea, is a stunning story of tragedy and heroism. (Michael Green, Georgetown University, on CNN Opinion)

A personal account from someone on the front lines
By David Stinson
I happened to run into this book while I was in the library looking for Andrei Lankov's North of the Dmz: Essays on Daily Life in North Korea. While it's definitely not as authoritative as that book, it has a lot about what ordinary North Korean people are actually like. The second chapter, "Inside the Hermit Kingdom" was particularly useful in that regard. "North Korean men are some of the most violent men I have ever met," says the author, and he mentions how North Korean men often can't even be housed together. Later he talks about their state-sponsored alcohol and drug habits. These are the sorts of details on everyday North Korean life that you don't usually see in more academic treatises, and his style of prose makes for easy reading.

Later in the book, he describes some of the work he does, getting North Korean refugees into friendly consulates, and smuggling them across China. While some of that had me gripping the edge of my seat, it didn't really give me any lasting knowledge about the country. The last chapter has a decent analysis about North Korea's future. One final note - people who do the sort of work the author does are really special and deserve recognition. Overall, I'd say this book does what it's supposed to. If you're looking for a treatise on international relations, you should look elsewhere, but for a personal account, from somebody who can answer the question "what are North Koreans really like?" you'll find this to be an excellent resource.

North Korean Horrors
By Nicky London
Horrors of living in North Korea as related by refugees who flee the country into China looking for a better life. A lot of credit goes to those selfless people who help the North Koreans escape the hell of a regime run by a madman.

An insightful and really easy read
By Amazon Customer
The best thing about this book is that it is an easy read. Although Kim engages with North Korea, a political hotbed and at the forefront of the global stage, his stories are personal and his style easy to follow. Pick this book up if you want a real feel for what is happening on the China-North Korea border. The human element makes it a compelling, but easily flowing read. Because of both its content and its style, you will find it difficult to this book down.

A Contemporary Cuba Reader: Reinventing the RevolutionFrom Brand: Rowman n Littlefield Publishers

Cuba has undergone dramatic changes since the collapse of European communism. The loss of economic aid and preferential trade with the Soviet Union and other Eastern bloc countries forced the Cuban government to search out new ways of organizing the domestic economy and new commercial relations in an international system dominated by market economies. The resulting economic reforms have reverberated through Cuban society and politics, recreating social inequalities unknown since the 1950s and confronting the political system with unprecedented new challenges. The resulting ferment is increasingly evident in Cuban cultural expression, and the responses to adversity and scarcity have reshaped Cuban social relations.

This anthology brings together the best recent scholarship and writing on Cuban politics, economics, foreign relations, society, and culture in the post-Soviet era, which Cubans call the "Special Period." Ideally suited for students and general readers seeking to understand contemporary Cuba, the book includes a substantive introduction setting the historical context, as well as part introductions and a chronology.

This is a wonderful resource for the study, discussion, and understanding of the contemporary history of Cuba. Delving into often-ignored areas of daily and institutional experience, and opening with an admirably lucid introduction, this text will become an indispensable tool for the teaching of contemporary Cuba in the English-speaking world. (James Dunkerley)

With chapters written by an international who’s who of specialists in contemporary Cuban politics, international relations, economics, culture, and society—all framed by an uncommonly useful introduction—A Contemporary Cuba Reader is among those few edited volumes that should be on every Latin Americanist’s bookshelf. Highly recommended. (Schoultz, Lars)

Why America Is Such a Hard Sell: Beyond Pride and Prejudice, by Juliana Geran Pilon

History offers ample proof of AmericaOs pride and prejudice, a twin handicap that prevents effective communication with the rest of the world. Using literature, political science, philosophy, and humor, the book explores some of the reasons for AmericaOs current predicament. It ends, however, on a positive note, describing some heartening initiatives, and expressing confidence in the sustaining power of the American spirit. Dr. Pilon's analysis should prove useful to scholars and practitioners, indeed to anyone interested in improving the interaction between America and the world.

Review
Juliana Pilon brings substantial doses of international political experience and wisdom to bear on the vexing question of how America can do a better job of making itself understood in the world. Her ideas cut across stale partisan lines of debate and offer a host of practical ways for moving forward. (Thomas Carothers, Vice President for Studies, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace)

How can the country that attracts immigrants from around the world―many of whom risk their lives to take on marginal and difficult lives as illegals―be concurrently hated by so many others? Juliana Pilon provides provocative insights into one of the world's true "love/hate" relationships and points to the many missteps, some thoughtless, others cynical and calculated, that contribute to international ambivalence about the United States, its policies, and its culture. In the last in particular, Dr. Pilon draws needed attention to the global impacts, intended or otherwise, of a popular culture that is often as diffucult for others to ignore as it is for Americans to defend. (William Nolte, School of Public Policy, University of Maryland and former Chancellor, National Intelligence University System)

Juliana Pilon offers a sober and insightful analysis with solid recommendations on how to reverse the declining perception of the United States overseas. This is a must read for anyone who is concerned about how these perceptions are adversely impacting the U.S. role in the world and looking for concrete ideas about what to do about it. (Kevin F. F. Quigley, President, National Peace Corps Association)

. . . a nonpolemical, evenhanded, and folksy critique of an America that failed to practice effective "global outreach" . . . Recommended. (L.S. Hunt CHOICE)

A contribution to studies about U.S./world relations. (Alexander J. Groth, research professor of political science, University of California, Davis)

Why America Is Such a Hard Sell is a thoughtful analysis of the world situation and why America's world reputation is tarnished. Juliana Pilon offers hopeful and practical ways of combating this image problem. This book is important because Pilon stays above the political fray, giving her solutions an air of legitimacy rarely seen in contemporary analysis. Pilon's compassion is like a beacon of hope for everyone in this divided world. I strongly encourage everybody to read this book. (Ambassador Akbar S. Ahmed, American University)

Recommended to anyone who cares about how America is perceived in the world
By Christopher N. Haver
Why America is Such a Hard Sell is a fascinating investigation of an intriguing and timely subject. Drawing on a vast range of experience, research, and metaphors (including Austen's "Pride and Prejudice" of the subtitle) Pilon's book takes on its subject matter with extraordinary depth and artfulness. Rather than resorting to polemical accusations or oversimplifications, this book thoughtfully explores the nature of America's perception problems. Throughout the book, humor and amusing anecdotes are woven into the narrative, providing color and insight that keep the reader engaged and entertained. While the subject may be disheartening at times, the overall message is one of optimism; if we know our audience, and know ourselves (blemishes and all) there is a real possibility to improve our perception abroad. I recommend this book to anyone who believes in the idea of America and sharing it with -- as opposed to thrusting it upon -- the world.

"Why is America such a Hard Sell?
By Joseph A. Grimes
George Bush has asked, "Why do they hate us?" Juliana Pilon has asked a different question in her new book, "Why is America Such a Hard Sell?" Americans know how to sell--look at McDonalds and pop culture--but we are not as good at explaining our government policies and actions. Too many Americans feel that since we are the strongest and most magnanimous country in the world, others should just follow our lead without complaining. Why should we listen to people who are always calling on us to bail them out and then griping about how we do it? Ms. Pilon gives examples of how this attitude hurts us. She then suggests some practical rules to improve ou strategic outreach. Opinion leaders can learn some valuable lessons from reading this book.

Government, Business, and the American Economy, by Robert Langran, Martin Schnitzer

Integrating approaches from political science, the study of business, and economics into a unified whole, Government, Business, and the American Economy, Second Edition, explores the many ways in which governments and the business world are interconnected. Topical coverage focuses on the role of government in the American economy; government and antitrust laws; social regulation of business; and the deregulation of U.S. transportation, financial, and communications institutions. On the global scene, international trade is emphasized along with economic development in less developed countries and terrorism and security. In addition, the authors carefully examine the important decisions rendered by the Supreme Court in this field, as well as relevant statutes passed by Congress and presidential actions that have directly impacted business. In addition to encompassing the major areas in which governments and businesses are involved with each other, the text explores the nature of the relationship and the extent to which each entity needs the other in order to survive.

Review
I found this text extremely informative and thought provoking for my upper division Government and Business students and I would recommend the new edition highly. (Roger Handberg)

This is a brilliant distillation of the whole history of American political economy that begins with a concise examination of the changing role of government over the last two hundred years and more, followed by a tightly organized historical analysis of government regulation, antitrust policies, and the relation of politics and foreign trade. My students appreciated how so much useful material could be made so readily available. Much has changed since 2001, and a second edition is welcome. The text will continue to be a great resource of significant worth. (Bradley Kent Carter)

The authors present their material in an evenhanded yet lively way, and students are likely to appreciate their presentation. Recommended. (Choice)
