Entertaining Politics: Satiric Television and Political Engagement (Communication, Media, and Politics), by Jeffrey P. Jones

In this completely revised and updated edition (including eight new chapters), Jeffrey Jones charts the evolution and maturation of political entertainment television by examining The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, The Colbert Report, Politically Incorrect/Real Time with Bill Maher, and Michael Moore's T.V. Nation and The Awful Truth. This volume investigates how and why these shows have been central locations for the critique of political and economic power and an important resource for citizens during numerous political crises. In an age of Truthiness, fake news and humorous political talk have proven themselves viable forms of alternative reporting and critical means for ascertaining truth, and in the process, questioning the legitimacy of news media's role as the primary mediator of political life. The book also addresses the persistent claims that these programs have cynical effects and create misinformed young citizens, demonstrating instead how such programming provide for an informed, active, and meaningful citizenship. The new edition takes account of the many changes that have occurred in television and political culture since Entertaining Politics' initial release.

Review
This thoroughly revised and brilliant second edition brings up to date the story of political television that Jones began with the first edition, and it expands the analysis in exciting new ways, thereby solidifying Jones's preeminence as a scholar who truly gets how politics, entertainment, and citizenship intersect in contemporary American life. All those who sense that the likes of Jon Stewart are doing something important, and all those who need convincing of the fact, should move this excellent book to the top of their reading list. (Jonathan Gray, author of Television Entertainment and Watching the Simpsons: Television, Parody, and Intertextuality)

Media practitioners and critics, along with a small but growing number of scholars, have increasingly noted the role of entertainment programming in public discourse about politics. Most observers lament this apparent trend, doing so with little attempt to place it in the context of democratic theory or practice. Entertaining Politics helps fill this void and in the process provides a nuanced, provocative―and at times optimistic―view of the changing face of television and politics. (Michael X. Delli Carpini, Dean, Annenberg School for Communication, University of Pennsylvania)

These are more than interesting times―they are entertaining ones. And the risk of that is a trivialization of politics, a loss of seriousness, and a spread of ignorance. But does that mean we should simply deride popular culture and the media, or rather that we must address them all the more urgently? Jeff Jones has the answers to these questions, and he acts as a perfect guide along a path to our enlightenment. (Toby Miller, New York University)

Entertaining Politics shows us why we must take satiric television seriously. Jeff Jones' cases and insights help us consider and question the political landscape in important ways. The first edition has been warmly received in my undergraduate survey courses and graduate research seminars; this engaging and detailed second edition will be equally attractive to a wide range of audiences attempting to make sense of the changing face of politics on television. (Sharon Jarvis, University of Texas at Austin)

The book is annotated and could serve as supplementary reading for courses in US electoral politics, communications and politics, and mass media.... Recommended. (CHOICE, August 2010)

Praise for the First Edition:This is a fresh and stimulating contribution to the study of media and politics. Jeffrey Jones underscores in a compelling way the complexity behind such traditional polarities as 'information' and 'entertainment,' and sheds new light on key concepts such as 'engagement.' Looking at contemporary humorous political talk shows on television, Jones highlights with insight and clarity the inexorable links between politics and popular culture. His book marks a major step forward in our understanding of civic culture and its relationship to the ubiquitous media milieu. Demonstrating analytic depth and yet written in an accessible manner, this book will become an important bridge between political communication and cultural studies. (Peter Dahlgren, Lund University)

It is a second edition, but such is the significance of this work that for anyone interested in the intersections of politics and popular culture -- even those who have read the original -- this book is an absolute must-read. (Media International Australia)

Review
This text features the important classic writings in environmental ethics vital to any effective representation of the subject, while also including a significant number of new voices, enabling students and instructors to gain a sense of the currency and liveliness of the field. Especially valuable, and setting this book apart from most textbooks in environmental ethics, are the 'In The First Person' vignettes from a range of environmental specialists, philosophers, and activists who give eloquent response to the question of why earth care matters. This text shows that environmental ethics is truly theory-in-action; as a field of study it does not merely identify salient conceptual and practical environmental problems, but strives to do something about them. Great Anthology! No Index?
By A&B
This is a well-rounded collection of texts by some very insightful authors. I was so disappointed, however, to find that there is no index whatsoever. I understand it would have taken a great deal of time to create one, but still.... The headings and titles are clear and concise, though, so I suppose that helps.

The focus of Reading the Twentieth Century is on the role of the United States in the world in the twentieth century, after the nation became a major world player. Readings include public documents, memoirs, and media comments, many of which have never been published before. The book is structured in such a way that portions can be assigned to students, and the order of presentation is such that instructors can assign sections chronologically or thematically. Though highly informative, the editor's chapter introductions and the document head notes are brief, designed only to introduce the subjects so that the documents can speak for themselves.

Communication, Media, and Identity: A Christian Theory of Communication (Communication, Culture, and Religion), by Robert S. Fortner

Communication, Media, and Identity: A Christian Theory of Communication is the first comprehensive theoretical look at the nature of communication from a biblical Christian perspective. This groundbreaking new work discusses the implications of such a theory for interpersonal relations, use of media, and the development of digital culture in the wake of the computer. It also draws widely from the literature of the secular world, critiquing perspectives where necessary and adopting perspectives that are in line with Christian anthropology, epistemology, and ontology. Through this unique lens, the reader is able to understand communication as an art, as a tool for evangelism, and as a unique human activity that allows people to have a stake in the creation. It covers both mediated and non-mediated forms of communication, is sensitive to theological differences within the Christian faith, and examines closely the problem of technology, and especially digital technology, for the practice of communication. As the newest book in the Communication, Culture, and Religion Series, Robert Fortner's work illuminates the theological aspects of communication.

Review
A needed and detailed synthesis of Christian ontology/epistemology and contemporary communication theory. Will be a great help to the young scholar. (Dale Keller, Professor of Communication Arts, Taylor University)

In Communication, Media, and Identity, Robert Fortner takes us on a pilgrimage through Christian thought and social theory to a place where we can see the possibilities of communion and community in communication. This book achieves a rare synthesis of scholarship and evangelical Christian faith. (John P. Ferré, University of Louisville)

A brilliant book, written with the intelligence and beauty of a humanities craftsman. It's erudite, but smart: readable as ever, illustrations that sing, and wisdom with theory. It will speak to what the author calls his 'interpretive community' with the same phosphoresence as John Dewey's The Public and Its Problems did for his. Robert Fortner's definition of communication is the best I've ever seen, and organizing the book around it is a splendid idea. This is imperative reading for the field as a whole. (Clifford G. Christians, University of Illinois)

About the Author
Robert S. Fortner is professor of communication at Calvin College.

An Unconventional History of Western Philosophy: Conversations Between Men and Women PhilosophersFrom Brand: Rowman Littlefield Publishe

Gender scholarship during the last four decades has shown that the exclusion of women's voices and perspectives has diminished academic disciplines in important ways. Traditional scholarship in philosophy is no different. The 'recovery project' in philosophy is engaged in re-discovering the names, lives, texts, and perspectives of women philosophers from the 6th Century BCE to the present. Karen Warren brings together 16 colleagues for a unique, groundbreaking study of Western philosophy which combines pairs of leading men and women philosophers over the past 2600 years, acknowledging and evaluating their contributions to foundational themes in philosophy, including epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics. Introductory essays, primary source readings, and commentaries comprise each chapter to offer a rich and accessible introduction to and evaluation of these vital philosophical contributions. A helpful appendix canvasses an extraordinary number of women philosophers for further discovery and study.

Review
This ground-breaking work has the potential to have a profoundly positive impact on philosophy as a discipline. Contemporary philosophers are nearly always engaged in dialogues with the past, and this book will help them to engage with female as well asmale historical figures. It will enhance our appreciation of women?s capacity for rigorous philosophical thought, enlarge our understanding of the parameters of philosophy itself, and promote a new perspective on the discipline as a co-operative, gender-inclusive enterprise. For the first time, teachers and students of philosophy are being offered a truly accurate and balanced introduction to the history of their subject... (Jacqueline Broad, Department of Philosophy, Monash University, Victoria, Australia)

Karen Warren's anthology provides a unique opportunity to integrate women philosophers into the history of philosophy by setting individual women philosophers into conversation with the men who have previously constituted philosophy's history. The numerous supporting materials will make this collection especially useful, most notably the first rate commentaries that have been commissioned for this volume. (Margaret Atherton, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee)

Finally all the makings of a student-friendly, fully gender-inclusive history of philosophy course―primary and secondary literature by men and women philosophers from the Greeks to the twentieth century―and all rolled into one attractive book. It's a pity we had to wait centuries for this book. Still, it was worth the wait. (Janet Kourany, University of Notre Dame)

For those of us who were trained to teach the philosophical canon, this extraordinary anthology is both unsettling and liberating. It is unsettling because it provides the clearest possible challenge to the view that we can offer our students the best account of our discipline simply by adding a female voice to the traditional list of important male philosophers. It is liberating because, having decided that we need to teach our courses differently, this anthology makes truly inclusive teaching practical. In addition to pairing selections from female and male philosophers, the volume includes compelling introductory comments by Professor Warren, and a dream team of some of the most distinguished feminist commentators. A revolutionary book. (Deane Curtin, Ph.D., professor and chair, Department of Philosophy, Gustavus Adolphus College)

An Unconventional History of Western Philosophy is an extraordinary resource. This landmark study of the development of Western thought is an exceptionally thoughtful, well-organized, informative, and above all important book, which accomplishes what needed to be done decades ago, namely, to document the significant role played by women thinkers throughout the history of Western philosophy. Highly recommended for everyone interested in a deeper understanding of why we think the way we do. (Michael E. Zimmerman, professor of philosophy, University of Colorado at Boulder)

(Jacqueline Broad, Department of Philosophy, Monash University, Victoria, Australia)

What a liberating way to think about the history of Western philosophy! The hitherto barely audible voices of women are here brought into robust dialogue with their great male contemporaries. This book will be enlightening and provocative for teachers as well as for students. (Gareth B. Matthews, University of Massachusetts, Amherst)

A finely crafted and long awaited addition to courses in philosophy that successfully resolves the 'woman question' in the history of philosophy. Warren has skillfully fashioned a series of dialogues―between women and men philosophers as well as contemporary and past philosophers―that provides an excellent foundation for students to better understand the nature of philosophy and give them the skills they need to fully engage philosophical texts, while at the same time coming to appreciate the significance of the contributions of women to philosophy. (Nancy Tuana, Editor, NEWSLETTER ON FEMINISM AND PHILOSOPHY)

Perhaps the most important development in Western philosophy during the past fifty years has been the reconception of philosophy arising from the feminist critique. Critical reconsiderations of the field have extended well beyond gender to include race, class, sexual orientation, violence, environmentalism, and more, focused on interconnections among longstanding presumptions. Unfortunately, academic philosophy has been slow to mainstream lost, ignored, and marginalized philosophic sources. Karen Warren's Unconventional History makes an important corrective step, providing students and scholars with revisionary dialogues to replace the more typical historical monologue. Professor Warren has carefully paired men and women philosophers to reveal the subtleties and complexities of multiple perspectives on traditional philosophic issues. Warren's work fills a void long overdue for filling. (Duane L. Cady, Ph.D., Professor of Philosophy, Hamline University, author of Moral Vision: How Everyday Life Shapes Ethical Thinking (Rowman & Littlef)

An Unconventional History is so thorough and substantial in style and content that it could be the backbone for major programs in philosophy and women's studies. Highly recommended. (CHOICE, December 2009)

This collection is an important corrective to conventional presentations of Western philosophy that write women out of its history. Juxtaposing prominent thinkers, male and female, throughout major periods of the development of the discipline, students will be provided a more complete picture of the history of philosophy. (Ellen K. Feder, American University)

indisensable resource
By Craig Chalquist, PhD, author of TERRAPSYCHOLOGY and DEEP CALIFORNIA
Professor Karen J. Warren brings together and sets into conversation fifteen pairs of Western philosophers, including Augustine and Hildegard, Abelard and Heloise, Descartes and Princess Elisabeth, Hobbes and Macaulay, Leibniz and Conway, Rousseau and Wollstonecraft, and Sartre and Beauvoir. Excerpts from key texts by these philosophers allow the reader to compare insights between women and men who philosophize. Reading this book made me more aware of how thoroughly we must revise the Western canon; I look on my shelves at the Sixty Great Books collection and feel amazed at how few women show up there.

In some cases--Dewey and Addams for example--men and women enriched each other's thought. In others, the women supply exactly what's missing from a man's philosophy. Reading the questions posed by Princess Elisabeth to Descartes, questions he was unable to answer, stirs amazement that she anticipated so many criticisms we now take for granted. Today many of us see Descartes' thought as dualistic, disembodied, and disconnected from the world, but she saw it first, and told him so.

Indispensable collection for the serious philosopher.

Thought provoking and informative
By Mark S. Carlson-Ghost
The book juxtaposed better known male philosophers, with often less well known women thinkers. I found the women often showed more emotional groundedness in their philosophical stances. The men sometimes came off as ivory tower types who didn't live their own perspective in the nitty gritty of their own lives. But this is no mere "feminist reconstruction" of the past. I found the editor and the writers of individual chapters to be honest and fair in what they wrote. This is exactly what I was looking for to help flesh out the early lectures in a History of Psychology course I was teaching. Very interesting.

Globalization and Culture: Global Mélange, by Jan Nederveen Pieterse

Now fully revised and updated, this seminal text asks if there is cultural life after the 'clash of civilizations' and global McDonaldization. Jan Nederveen Pieterse argues that what is taking place is a global culture of hybridization. In a new chapter, the author explores East-West hybridities_the idea that globalization is a process of braiding rather than simply a diffusion from developed to developing countries. His historically deep and geographically wide approach to globalization is essential reading as we face the spread of conflicts bred by cultural misunderstanding.

So we urgently need this enlightened unpacking of globalization by one of the pioneers of the debate-Jan Nederveen Pieterse. -- Ulrich Beck, Institut fur Soziologie, Germany PRAISE FOR THE FIRST EDITION Critical, creative, and committed, Jan Nederveen Pieterse's Globalization and Culture is a work of highly impressive scholarship and rich imagination. Historically informed and theoretically wide-ranging, this is a reader-friendly must read for all interested in this immensely topical subject. The author's deep personal engagement with the notion of hybridization makes a substantial contribution to the literature. -- Anthony D. King, State University of New York, Binghamton PRAISE FOR THE FIRST EDITION Cultural change is all too frequently either overlooked entirely in discussions of globalization or dismissed with glib and misleading generalities about homogenization or clashing civilizations. Jan Nederveen Pieterse offers a perspective that is more complex, truer to the ever-shifting realities of twenty first-century life, and far more interesting. With this book, he establishes himself as a world-class thinker about the world. -- Walter Truett Anderson, president, World Academy of Art and Science PRAISE FOR THE FIRST EDITION Globalization and Culture is a significant contribution to a debate that is interdisciplinary, heated, and concerned with contemporary issues. Globalization produces cultural interaction, new permutations, and new differences which Nederveen Pieterse persuasively defends as part of the hybridization thesis. Whether one agrees with him or not (and I do), this book is essential reading for those who want an intelligent and lively guide to the debate about the effects of globalization on culture. -- Keith Griffin, University of California, Riverside PRAISE FOR THE FIRST EDITION Globalization and Culture: the Global Melange has been an excellent book for usage in my interdisciplinary, introductory culture and politics course. Cultural Studies is an emerging field and it is difficult to find books that ground students in the fundamental principles and precepts of the 'discipline'. This book like no other achieves this goal. The book is interesting, written in an accessible style for undergraduates and especially targets the relationship between globalization and culture in ways that I have found in no other book. I highly recommend this book for both the international relations and the cultural studies classrooms. -- Rita Kiki Edozie, Michigan State University

Great contribution to an emerging concept
By K
The concept of globalization as hybridization is new and unique, and is considered in detail in this book. Altneratives, such as differentialism and convergence, are also considered and rejected, providing a full reading on the cultural effects of globalization. This is a great text for anyone entering cultural studies, at both undergraduate and graduate level. However, it would be beneficial to read some of Nederveen Pieterse's other papers on globalization prior to this book in order to fully understand his perspective and argument.

The Global New Deal: Economic and Social Human Rights in World Politics (New Millennium Books in International Studies), by William F. Fel

Global human suffering in the twenty-first century seems bitterly entrenched, with almost half of the world's people remaining impoverished and over 26,000 children dying daily from preventable causes. This powerful and empowering text offers a way forward, presenting a realistic roadmap for enhanced benevolent global governance with practical, workable solutions to mass poverty. Now fully updated, including new chapters, The Global New Deal outlines the legal responsibilities for all institutions, organizations, and states under international law to respect, protect, and fulfill economic and social human rights. William F. Felice focuses on seven key areas: the dynamics within international political economy that contribute to economic inequality and create human suffering, the U.N.'s approach to economic and social human rights, the priority of ecosystem protection within all development strategies, the degree of racial bias prevalent in global economics, the relationship between gender equality and economic growth, the impact of military spending on human development, and the importance for the United States to adopt a human-rights approach to poverty alleviation. Arguing for a "global new deal," a set of international and national public policy proposals designed to protect the vulnerable and end needless suffering, this book provides a viable direction for structural reform to protect those left behind by the global economy.

Review
This second edition is a rare discovery: methodologically sound and relevant social science research laced with a strong dose of compassion. A broad definition of human rights, based on the 'transitivity principle'—subsistence needs must be satisfied prior to the realization of other rights—is adopted. Yet, however measured, world poverty remains staggering despite the decade-old UN articulation of Millennium Development Goals (MDG), intended to substantially reduce poverty by 2015 as a first major step toward the fulfillment of universally declared fundamental rights. Progress toward the MDG has been sluggish and probably, from this reviewer's perspective, impeded by the global recession. Nevertheless, institutional mechanisms, such as committees to monitor rights, remain to strengthen rights for disadvantaged groups, those of gender and race included. Committees can be reinforced while certain policies, like military spending, can be redirected to advance rights. Felice offers a systematic analysis of pertinent data informed by human rights theory that, in turn, yields positive recommendations at the end of each chapter and, taken collectively, 'a new global deal' to effectively promote economic and social human rights. Research tied to relevance and compassion at its academic best. Highly recommended. (CHOICE)

The first edition of this book, aside from being a great primer on the inner workings of the United Nations, made a compelling case that there are meaningful policy alternatives to the current socio-economic order that consigns hundreds of millions to poverty, malnutrition, and easily preventable disease. The second edition significantly expands the moral and economic justification for pursuing a Global New Deal. Felice (and Fuguitt) provides clear discussions of why global public goods are essential and how policies can be altered to better ensure their equitable provision. That, in combination with an expanded discussion of the capabilities approach, makes this book a rare achievement: a sophisticated yet clearly written work that―while conveying the moral urgency of fundamental policy change―also shows how that change is practical, congruent with international law, and in everyone's best interest. (Brent L. Pickett, University of Wyoming)

Knowledgeable problem solver
By Sandra Sailor
Bill Felice has an extensive knowledge of the U.N. and a passionate concern for the vast number of people living in poverty throughout the world. He actually presents a solution that challenges countries, and their electorates, to reallocate resources to foreign aid, education and healthcare.

My favorite professor's book
By Julie Clare
This was written by my mentor in International Relations at Eckerd College, Professor Bill Felice. For everyone at Eckerd who has been lucky enough to have one of Felice's classes, you already know that he and this book are both great. Anyone with an interest in international relations, human rights, etc. should read this book. I also recommend his book Taking Suffering Seriously. They are hard to find at regular bookstores, but I'm excited to see that Amazon sells them both.
